For a Banach space $X$ we consider three ways in which a subspace of $X^*$ can represent locally the whole dual space $X^*$. We obtain characterizations in terms of ultrapowers and we study the relationship between the subspaces of $X^*$ and the subspaces of the dual of an ultrapower of $X$.

In this paper we study nilmanifolds which are modeled on a quotient of a free 2-step nilpotent Lie group by a 1-dimensional subgroup. In fact we obtain a very easy criterion to decide whether or not such a nilmanifold admits an Anosov diffeomorphism.

Let $\rho:G\hookrightarrow {\rm GL}(n, {\bb F})$ be a representation of a finite group over the field ${\bb F}, V = {\bb F}^n$ the corresponding $G$-module, and ${\bb F}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]$ the algebra of polynomial functions on $V$. The action of $G$ on $V$ extends to ${\bb F}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]$, and ${\bb F}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]^G$, respectively ${\bb F}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]_G$, denotes the ring of invariants, respectively coinvariants. The theorem of Steinberg referred to in the title says that when ${\bb F} = {\bb C}$, dim$_{\bb C}$ (Tot$({\bb C}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]_G))=|G|$ if and only if $G$ is a complex reflection group. Here Tot$({\bb F}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]_G)$ denotes the direct sum of all the homogeneous components of the graded algebra ${\bb F}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]_G$ and $|G|$ is the order of $G$. Chevalley's theorem tells us that the ring of invariants of a complex pseudoreflection representation $G\hookrightarrow {\rm GL}(n, {\bb C})$ is polynomial algebra, and the theorem of Shephard and Todd yields the converse. Combining these results gives: dim$_{\bb F}$(Tot$({\bb C}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]_G) = |G|$ if and only if ${\bb C}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]^G$ is a polynomial algebra. The purpose of this note is to show that the two conditions

(i) dim$_{\bb F}$(Tot(${\bb F}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]_G))\,{=}\,|G|$,

(ii) ${\bb F}[V\hspace*{1.5pt}]^G$ is a polynomial algebra

are equivalent regardless of the ground field; in particular in the modular case.

The main problem investigated in this paper is the following. Assume that we are given a convergent projective system of topological measure spaces ordered by ordinals. When does there exist a consistent system of liftings (densities, linear liftings) on the projective system converging to a lifting (density, linear lifting) on the limit space. We look mainly for strong or strong completion Baire liftings. We reduce the problem to the question about the existence of strong liftings being inverse images of other strong liftings under measure preserving mappings (Proposition 2.4) and then we adapt a condition applied earlier by A. and C. Ionescu Tulcea [14] to get a strong lifting for an arbitrary measure on a product space (Theorem 2.7). In this way we get some results (see Theorems 2.7, 5.3, 5.7, 6.4 and 6.5) extending the well known achievements of A. and C. Ionescu Tulcea [14] and Fremlin [9].

The application of projective limits allows us to carry over results obtained earlier only for product spaces (see e.g. [23], [18], [19], [20], [21]) to more general classes of topological probability spaces. In particular, we can extend the class of spaces for which there is a positive answer to a problem of J. Kupka [17] concerning the permanence of the strong lifting property under the formation of products (see Theorem 6.5).

Two subgroups $M$ and $S$ of a group $G$ are said to permute, or $M$permutes with$S$, if $MS = SM$. Furthermore, $M$ is a permutable subgroup of $G$ if $M$ permutes with every subgroup of $G$. In this article, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a subgroup of $G\times H$, whose intersections with the direct factors are normal, to be a permutable subgroup.

The automorphism group of a virtually polycyclic group $G$ is either virtually polycyclic or it contains a non-abelian free subgroup. We describe conditions on the structure of $G$ to decide which of the two alternatives occurs for $Aut(G).$

We compare the probability of generating with a given number of random elements two almost simple groups with the same socle $S$. In particular we analyse the case $S\,{=}\,{\psl}(2,p)$.

Let $G(o)$ and $G(*)$ be two groups of finite order $n$, and suppose that each of the sets $\{u\in G;\ uo v=u*v$ for all $v\in G\}$ and $\{v\in G;\ uo v=u*v$ for all $u\in G\}$ has $n/2$ elements. Then $G(*)$ can be obtained from $G(o)$ by one of the two general constructions that are discussed in the paper.

From the classical differential equation of Jacobi fields, one naturally defines the Jacobi operator of a Riemannian manifold with respect to any tangent vector. A straightforward computation shows that any real, complex and quaternionic space forms satisfy that any two Jacobi operators commute. In this way, we classify the real hypersurfaces in quaternionic projective spaces all of whose tangent Jacobi operators commute.

A well-known theorem of P. Hall says that if a group $G$ contains a normal nilpotent subgroup $N$ such that $G/N'$ is nilpotent then $G$ is nilpotent. We give a similar sufficient condition for a group $G$ to be an extension of a group of finite exponent by a nilpotent group.Supported by CNPq-Brazil.

In this paper we introduce simple multipliers, a special subclass of multipliers on a Banach module. We show that, from a local spectral point of view, these multipliers behave like multipliers on a commutative Banach algebra. Our definition of simple multipliers relies on the notion of point multipliers. These multipliers were studied earlier. However our approach gives new insight into this topic and therefore could be of some interest by itself.

We prove that the perturbation class of the upper semi-Fredholm operators from $X$ into $Y$ is the class of the strictly singular operators, whenever $X$ is separable and $Y$ contains a complemented copy of $C[0, 1]$. We also prove that the perturbation class of the lower semi-Fredholm operators from $X$ into $Y$ is the class of the strictly cosingular operators, whenever $X$ contains a complemented copy of $\ell_1$ and $Y$ is separable. We can remove the separability requirements by taking suitable spaces instead of $C[0, 1]$ or $\ell_1$.

Let $M$ be a subset of $\Bbb R$ with the following two invariance properties: (1) $M+k\subseteq M$ for all integers $k$, and (2) there exists a positive integer $l\ge 2$ such that $\frac{1}{l}M\subseteq M$. (For example, the set of Liouville numbers and the Besicovitch-Eggleston set of non-normal numbers satisfy these conditions.) We prove that if $h$ is a dimension function that is strongly concave at $0$, then the $h$-dimensional Hausdorff measure $\cal H^{h}(M)$ of $M$ equals $0$ or infinity.

Let $J_\mu$ denote the Bessel function of order $\mu$. The functions $x^{-\alpha-1} J_{\alpha+2n+1}(x), n=0,1,2,\ldots,$ form an orthogonal system in the space $L^2((0,\infty), x^{2\alpha+1}dx)$ when $\alpha >{-}1$. In this paper we prove that the Fourier series associated to this system is of restricted weak type for the endpoints of the interval of mean convergence, while it is not of weak type if $\alpha\,{\ge}\,0$.

The tensor center of a group $G$ is the set of elements $a$ in $G$ such that $a\otimes g = 1_\otimes$ for all $g$ in $G$. It is a characteristic subgroup of $G$ contained in its center. We introduce tensor analogues of various other subgroups of a group such as centralizers and 2-Engel elements and investigate their embedding in the group as well as interrelationships between those subgroups.

We prove some inequalities for the spectral radius of positive operators on Banach function spaces. In particular, we prove the following extension of Levinger's theorem. Let $K$ be a positive compact kernel operator on $L^2(X, \mu)$ with the spectral radius $r(K)$. Then the function $\phi$ defined by $\phi(t) = r(t K + (1-t) K^*)$ is non-decreasing on $[0, \frac{1}{2}]$. We also prove that $\| A + B^* \| \ge 2 \cdot \sqrt{r(A B)}$ for any positive operators $A$ and $B$ on $L^2(X, \mu)$.

We continue the investigation of tabular algebras with trace (a certain class of associative $\mathbb{z}[v, v^{-1}]$-algebras equipped with distinguished bases) by determining the extent to which the tabular structure may be recovered from a knowledge of the structure constants. This problem is equivalent to understanding a certain category (the category of table data associated to a tabular algebra) which we introduce. The main result is that this category is equivalent to another category (the category of based posets associated to a tabular algebra) whose structure we describe explicitly.

Let $\alpha$ be an irrational number. We determine the Hausdorff dimension of sets of real numbers which are close to infinitely many elements of the sequence $(\{n\alpha\})_{n\,{\ge}\,1}$.

For a linearly ordered set $X$ we consider the relative rank of the semigroup of all order preserving mappings $\mathcal{O}_{X}$ on $X$ modulo the full transformation semigroup $\mathcal{T}_{X}$. In other words, we ask what is the smallest cardinality of a set $A$ of mappings such that $\genset{\mathcal{O}_{X}\cup A}=\mathcal{T}_{X}$. When $X$ is countably infinite or well-ordered (of arbitrary cardinality) we show that this number is one, while when $X=\mathbb{R}$ (the set of real numbers) it is uncountable.

Let $A$ be a locally finite, N-graded, noetherian algebra with a balanced dualizing complex. If $A$ is a Hopf algebra, then $A$ has finite injective dimension.
