This work represents a circularly polarized implantable patch antenna operating at the ISM band (2.4–2.48 GHz) for biomedical applications. The presented patch antenna has a compact volume of 50 mm3 i.e., 10 × 10 × 0.5 mm3. All the Simulations have been carried out within homogeneous skin phantom and head scalp phantom. Miniaturization of antenna and enhancement of bandwidth is achieved by using various techniques described in this work. The designed patch antenna has wide axial ratio bandwidth of 20.08 and 15.44% inside scalp phantom and homogeneous skin phantom, respectively. Obtained impedance bandwidths are 56.79 and 49.75% inside scalp phantom and homogeneous skin phantom, respectively. At 2.45 GHz, obtained peak gains are −25.18 and −28.12 dB, respectively. The proposed antenna is enclosed in a biocompatible material to avoid direct contact with the human tissue. For patient safety concerns, simulated maximum specific absorption ratio values are also investigated and are under the limits of the IEEE standard. The allowable input power is also calculated in this work. Link budget analysis is used in this work to determine the far-field communication range of the designed antenna.

A compact, two-element textile MIMO antenna is designed with enhanced isolation by using modification in the ground, open-ended slots along with shorting pins. Maximum 27.8 dB isolation is achieved in two-element antennae, where the edge-to-edge distance is kept at 0.19 λ0 which is less than the conventional half wavelength. The Y-shaped decoupling and shorting pins improve the isolation up to 14 dB and can mitigate the current moment between the two ports effectively. The open slots in the ground are enhancing the mutual impedance and shift the operating band of the antenna toward the lower frequency band and thus size miniaturization is also achieved. The textile antenna achieves a 10 dB impedance bandwidth from 4.24 to 5.38 GHz with more than 21.1 dB isolation in the entire band. The phantom wrist model and bending analysis are carried out with the textile antenna to validate the on-body effects of the antenna in wearable and 5G applications.

This paper reports an exhaustive review of recent research progress in the development of millimeter-wave absorbers. With the advancement in technologies, microwave absorbers have shown their evolution in several applications such as defense, security identification, stealth technology, and several more. The importance of these absorbers is increasing due to electromagnetic interference (EMI) effects. Primarily, an abundant amount of absorbers has been developed in lower frequency bands and with the increasing demand for 5G technology, the usage of millimeter-wave bands has gained attention. This in turn requires the development of millimeter-wave absorbers to provide EMI shielding in several applications. Out of several materials, polymers have grabbed attention in the mitigation of EMI. An absorber that combines carbonaceous elements with polymers offers large design flexibility and tunability per the filler concentration. This paper focuses on the classification of these absorbers based on geometry as well as that by using polymers with their design challenges, merits, and demerits with their industrial applications. Comparative studies of geometrically based absorbers and polymeric-based absorbers are also shown.

In this paper, a compact four-element quasi-self-complementary (QSC) ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple-input multiple-output antenna with triple band-notched characteristics is proposed. Coplanar waveguides fed QSC structure is designed as radiation element to achieve wideband and small size. Besides, regular hexagonal split-ring resonators with single negative properties are designed and added on the back of the substrate to obtain high isolation in the whole operating band. Moreover, a double-fork-shaped slit is etched in each radiating element to generate three notched bands covering 3.63–4.24, 5.15–5.98, and 7.17–8 GHz. The experiment results indicate that the isolation of the proposed antenna is higher than 22 dB and the peak gain varies from 2.5 to 6.7 dB in the entire band of 3–18 GHz, which demonstrates that it is suitable for UWB applications.

Dielectric resonator antennas (DRA) are advantageous due to their small size, high radiation efficiency, ease of excitation, and minimal metallic losses. Enhancing the gain of DRA will make them suitable for a variety of applications such as wireless communication technology. High-gain antennas are required for wireless communication to overcome the difficulties of high path loss. The researchers have presented numerous techniques, including stacked DRA, DRA array, and higher-order mode excitation for enhancing the gain. This article provides a comprehensive summary of the state of art techniques and geometries including stacking, frequency-selective surfaces superstrate, electromagnetic band gap structures, hybrid techniques, arrays, etc., for increasing DRA gain. Techniques to improve other parameters like bandwidth and radiation efficiency along with gain are also discussed. The challenges in each technique and the possible applications are presented. Based on the studies, it is observed that the DRA array technique is suitable for obtaining gains up to 19 dBi for radar-based applications. For low-profile DRA requirements, hybrid DRAs prove prolific in enhancing gain up to 16 dBi.

A 5G rotated frame radiator for multiple applications is presented in the following paper. The presented geometry is capable of radiating the large frequency band from 2.91 to 12.17 GHz, which covers the 5G-(I) sub-6 GHz band, X-band communication with high efficiency. The impedance bandwidth of the radiator is 128%, with an electrical size of 0.24 λ × 0.24 λ × 0.15 λ in lambda. The antenna is simulated with an FR4 substrate using CST Simulator. 06-stages evolution process is also investigated by simulations, and corresponding S-parameter results are presented. Antenna's design comprises a patch in a rotated square fractal-like frame fed by a microstrip line. The proposed structure also demonstrates stable radiation patterns across the operating bandwidth. The proposed radiator has a high gain of 3.8 dBi, and an efficiency of 85%, which claimed that UWB range of the designed antenna. Therefore, it is useful for 5G-(I) sub-6 GHz band, X-band applications, including mobile, radar, and satellite microwave communication.

E-plane sectoral horn antenna based on printed ridge gap waveguide (PRGW) technology is designed for 5G applications. It is implemented on the top plate of the PRGW structure to avoid the losses and dispersion associated with conventional feeding mechanisms. The quasi-transverse electromagneticPRGW-based antenna is excited through a planar microstrip transition. First, the single horn antenna element is introduced with the microstrip feeding section. It shows an impedance bandwidth of fractional bandwidth 26% from 45.7 to 55.4 GHz with the realized gain of 12.7 dBi and radiation efficiency of 90%. In order to maximize the realized gain, a four-element linear horn array is introduced. The same impedance bandwidth is maintained with the array having a gain of 18.6 dBi from 45.7 to 55.4 GHz. The overall antenna array performance in the entire operating frequency range is stable with a radiation efficiency around 85%. Three matching sections are implemented to achieve better impedance matching. One is used to match the horn with the feeding aperture via the PRGW line. Another section is designed to match microstrip transition with PRGW ridge. Finally, two-stage quarter wavelength transformers are required to match the power divider with the array feeding network. A prototype of single-element horn antenna was fabricated to verify the concept of the design. Simulated and measured results show that the proposed antenna can operate in the frequency band of 45–55 GHz with good agreement of radiation performance. Moreover, the proposed designs are implemented and simulated using two microwave simulation tools (CST and HFSS) to verify the radiation performance, which exhibits good agreement. The design of an E-sectoral horn antenna and its array with high gain based on PRGW is demonstrated for the first time which is considered a novel issue. It can be integrated with other passive and active elements in communication systems. Thus, it can be a valuable component in 5G communication due to its high gain, compact size and ultra-wide band.
