The potential rate of increase of Corcyra cephalonica (Staint.) on Sorghum

Abstract

A laboratory study of the biology of Corcyra cephalonica (Staint.) was made at 30°C and 70% r.h. on sorghum. The number of eggs laid per female, oviposition period, development time and survival from egg to adult were determined. The data were used to estimate the finite rate of increase and the intrinsic rate of natural increase of the moth. For the finite rate of increase (λ) the estimated value was 18 per lunar month, corresponding to an intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) of 2.9. The results are compared with published data and it is concluded that the pest potential of C. cephalonica has been, hitherto, underestimated.

Résumé

Une étude sur la vie et le développement de Corcyra cephalonica (Staint.) à été effectuée en laboratoire a 30°C et à 70% r.h. sur le sorgho. Au cours de cette étude ont été calculés: le nombre d'oeufs pondus par femelle, la periode de la ponte, la durée du développement et elle du. Passage de l'oeuf à l'adulte. Les données ont été utilisées pour déterminer le taux de croissance et le taux de multiplication natveelle de l'insecte. En ce qui concerne le taux de croissance (λ) il est de 18 par mois lunaise, le taux de multiplication (r), lui, est de 2.9. La comparaison des résultats de cette étude avec les données déjà publiées a démontre que le pouvoir dévasteur de cette insecte à été jusqu'à present sousestime.
