Effects of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) extracts on food intake and utilisation in the African armyworm, Spodoptera exempta (Walker)

Abstract

Azadirachtin, the principal active ingredient of neem seed and aqueous neem seed extracts (ANSE) reduced food intake and utilisation efficiency in the penultimate instar level of the African armyworm (Spodoptera exempta) when applied either topically or mixed with the diet of the insect. These observations reflect interference of neem with centres in the insect that regulate feeding and metabolism. The decreased food utilisation efficiency in treated insects indicated higher metabolic costs as they had to direct some energy into dealing with neem deposits in their bodies rather than biomass production.

Résumé

L'azadirachtine, principale matière active des graines du neem (Azadirachta indica), et d'extraits aqueux de sa graine a réduit l'ingestion de lanourriture ainsi que l'efficacité d'utilisation chez l'avant dernièr stade de la chenille processionnaire (Spodoptera exempta) lorsque l'extrait fut appliqué soit directement sur l'individu soit melangé à sa nourriture. Ceci reflète l'influence de l'extrait du neem sur les centres régulateurs du métabolisme et de nutrition. La diminution de l'efficacité métabolique chez les individus donne une indication des coûts métaboliques plus élevés, car ceux-ci devant détourner une partie de leur énergie de production vers la neutralisation des déchets d'extraits du neem plutôt que vers la production de biomasse.
