Identification of sources of resistance in cowpea, Vigna unguiculata L. Walp. to Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stal. (Hemiptera: Coreidae)

Abstract

Thirty-six cowpea cultivars were evaluated for their resistance to the pod-sucking bug, Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stål, in the screenhouse and in field experiments. Absolute resistance was not found in any of them, although cultivars with relatively low percentage seed damage were present. Seventeen cultivars were significantly less damaged than the susceptible check in the field experiments. Seven cultivars had less than 60% seed damage. Of these, TVu 3354, TVu 3355, TVu 3372, TVu 8525 and TVu 3199 were the least damaged. Per cent seed damage on cultivars in the field was not consistent with that in the screenhouse, because of the influence of other pod-sucking bug species and environmental factors.

Yield components such as 100 seed weight and the number of pods per plant were related to the resistance of the test cultivars to the bug attack. Cultivars with smaller seeds and more pods per plant were less damaged. The number of seeds per pod was not related to the degree of seed damage. Similarly, morphological parameters of the cultivars were not related to the degree of seed damage.

Résumé

Trente-six plants de soja furent évalués pour leur résistance au parasite destructeur de gousses, le Clavigralla tomentosicollis en serre et en terrain d'expériences. Aucune résistance absolue n'a été trouvée, en eux, bien qu'il y ait des plants avec un pourcentage relativement inférieur de grains abîmés. Dix-sept plants étaient de manière significative moins détruits que la vérification susceptible effectuée en serre, alors que dix plants étaient significativement moins détruits que la vérification sur le terrain d'expériences. Sept plants avaient moins de 60% de grains abîmés; parmi eux cinq, le TVu 3354, le TVu 3355, le TVu 3372, le TVu 8525 et le TVu 3199 étaient les moins détruits.

Le pourcentage des graines détruites des plants sur le terrain n'était pas aussi consistant que celui des plants en serre à cause de l'influence des autres espèces de parasites destructeurs de gousses et de facteurs environnants.

Les produits des composantes, tel que le poids de 100 graines et le nombre de gousses par plante étaient liés à la résistance des plants expérimentaux contre l'attaque du parasite. Les plants ayant des graines plus petites et plus de gousses par plante étaient moins abîmés. Le nombre de graines par gousse n'était pas lié au degré des grains abîmés. De même, les paramètres morphologiques des plants n'étaient pas liés au degré de grains abîmés.
