Preliminary observations on the incidence of insect pests and related damage to stored dried fish in Kainji Lake area

Abstract

Investigations were conducted on dried fish samples purchased from Faku and Sabo markets (in the Kainji Lake Area) and stored for 6 months. The most abundant insect pest was Dermestes maculatus particularly the larvae. At 3 months of storage, weight losses were 13% for S. galilaeus, 17% for T. niloticus and 19% for Alestes sp. respectively, with the products reduced to powder mixed with insect exuviae and dead larvae. An analysis of the salt content of the samples showed no significant difference between salt composition at the beginning and end of the experiment. A relationship between salt content and the degree of infestation by insect pest could not be established, possibly because of the low percentage salt composition observed on all samples. A suggestion is made as to the possible areas of research to combat the menace of insect pest infestation of dried fish.

Résumé

Des, expériences faites sur des échantillons de poissons fumés achétés dans les marches de Faku et Sabo (dans les environs du lac Kainji) et conservés pendant une période de 6 mois. Les pastes les plus nombreuses étaient les Dermestes maculatus, particulièrement les larves. A 3 mois de conservation, la diminution de poids enregistrée était: 13% pour les Sarotherodon galilaeus, 17% pour les Tilapia niloticus et puis 19% pour les Alestes sp. A la fin des 6 mois de conservation, la perte totale des poids était aussi elevée que: 26%, 30% et 34% pour S. galilaeus, T. niloticus et Alestes spp. respectivement. Il y avait aussi un produit poudreux constitué de débris d'insectes et de larves morts. Une analyse du sel contenu dans les échantillons n'a pas montré une différence considerable taut au début qu'à la fin de l'experimentation. Une relation ne pouvait pas être établie entre le sel contenu dans les échantillons et le degré de l'infection par la peste. Ceci était possiblement due au bas pourcentage de la composition, en sel des échantillons. Il a été proposé une recherche en vue de mettre en place des moyens adaquoits pour combattre l'effet ménacent de l'infection de poissons fumés par la paste.
