Summary

A technique is described for speeding germination of monogerm sugar-beet seed. The optimum treatment was four cycles of wetting seed with its own weight of water and storing it in a sealed container for 24 hours before drying for 48 hours. The number of cells per embryo was doubled, seedlings emerged approximately 2·5 days sooner and seedling shoot weight was increased by 31 to 53%.
