A unified wall-boundary condition for the pressure-based lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is proposed. The present approach is developed from the direct-forcing technique in the immersed boundary method and is derived from the equilibrium pressure distribution function. The proposed method can handle many kinds of wall boundaries, such as fixed wall and moving wall boundaries, in the same way. It is found that the new method has the following advantages: (1) simple in concept and easy to implement, (2) higher-order accuracy, (3) mass conservation, and (4) a stable and good convergence rate. Based on this wall-boundary condition, if a solid wall is immersed in a fluid, then by applying Gauss's theorem, the formulas for computing the force and torque acting on the solid wall from fluid flow are derived from the volume integrals over the solid volume instead of from the surface integrals over the solid surface. Based on the pressure-based LBM, inlet and outlet boundary conditions are also proposed. The order of accuracy of the proposed boundary condition is demonstrated with the errors of the velocity field, wall stress, and gradients of velocity and pressure. The steady flow past a circular cylinder is simulated to demonstrate the efficiency and capabilities of the proposed unified method.

In the present study, a three-dimensional computer code, based on the computer software KIVA-3, was developed for the combustion-flow simulation of a bipropellant liquid rocket thruster. A jets-impingement model is proposed for the unlike-doublet jet impingement issue. The computer code is employed to simulate a small bipropellant liquid rocket engine installed with three unlike-doublet injectors of NTO and MMH as well as six fuel injectors injecting MMH toward the combustor wall for cooling. Effects of the fuel-injection cooling on the combustion flow, combustion efficiency, and wall temperature were investigated. The results obtained from the present study show that under the present injector configuration and a constant total fuel-flow rate, higher cooling-fuel ratios make the atomized mixing flow of NTO and MMH shift toward the combustor wall, resulting in lower combustion efficiency and chamber pressure; however, low cooling-fuel ratios are unable to keep the wall-temperature sufficiently low. To overcome this issue, the proposed three-dimensional computer code calculates/locates the optimal cooling-fuel ratio that bears high combustion efficiency for a bipropellant liquid rocket combustor while keeping the chamber wall sufficiently cool.

This paper concerns with the unsteady MHD flow of a second grade fluid between two parallel walls through porous media induced by rectified sine pulses shear stress. The analytical expressions for the velocity field and the adequate shear stress are determined by means of the Laplace transform technique and Fourier cosine and sine transforms and are written as a sum of steady state and transient solutions. The influence of side walls on the fluid motion, the distance between walls for which the velocity of the fluid in the middle of the channel is negligible, and the required time to reach the steady state are presented by graphical illustrations. As the second grade fluid parameter → 0 the problem reduces to the Newtonian fluids performing the same motion.

Two-dimensional flow of Jeffrey fluid by an inclined stretching cylinder with convective boundary condition is studied. In addition the combined effects of thermal radiation and viscous dissipation are taken into consideration. The developed nonlinear partial differential equations are reduced into the ordinary differential equations by suitable transformations. The governing equations are solved for the series solutions. The convergence of the series solutions for velocity and temperature fields is carefully analyzed. The effects of various physical parameters such as ratio of relaxation to retardation times, Deborah number, radiation parameter, Biot number, curvature parameter, local Grashof number, Prandtl number, Eckert number and angle of inclination are examined through graphical and numerical results of the velocity and temperature distributions.

In this study, a vortical stator assembly (VSA) was developed to improve the rotor performance, surrounding a drag-type, vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT). A rotor with six half-tube blades was employed. The VSA consisted of a number of guide vanes, which were to guide the air tangentially into the VSA. The design was to generate a vortical flow inside the VSA, to reduce the negative torque of the returning rotor blade, and to increase the air speed into the rotor. Wind tunnel model tests were conducted to investigate how the VSAs affected rotor performance. Four VSAs were developed in this study, employing 4, 6, 8 and 12 guide vanes that were 24cm in width, and one 6-guide-vane VSA employing guide vane widths of 12, 18, 24 and 30cm. Results indicated that VSAs can substantially augment the rotor performance, depending on the number and length of guide vanes. The 6-guide-vane VSA produced the largest effect on the rotor performance, and the optimal VSA diameter was approximately 1.82 times the rotor diameter. At an air speed of 6m/s, the optimal VSA helps to increase the free-running rotational speed by 318%, the torque output by 200%, and the maximal power output by 910%.

Three-dimensional integrated circuit packages with through-silicon vias (TSVs) provide a good solution to the integration of different chips and help achieve high performance. The signals are transmitted to different layers directly through the vias, thereby enabling the high performance of the chips. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor-deposited SiO2, polyimide, and benzo-cyclo-butene are commonly used as the passivation layer for three-dimensional packages. In the 3D stacked chips, mismatch of the coefficient of thermal expansion between the passivation material and silicon will generate thermal/mechanical stress in the metal trace and the stress affects the behavior of electromigration. However, few studies have examined the relationship among the external mechanical stress and critical product of electromigration. In the present study, external stress is applied to the aluminum thin film by a four-point bending equipment. In order to apply higher external stress in the aluminum thin film, the fracture strength of the silicon substrate should be improved. Reduces the edge chipping of the test sample is a key factor for improving the fracture strength of the silicon substrate and a special cutting approach is employed to obtain higher silicon strength. A two-step cutting method is applied to reduce front side chipping and also a dicing before grinding approachis adopted to reduce backside chipping, the above-mentioned technology can enable more than 275MPa of external stress on the aluminum thin film and can make the critical length effect more visible. The residual stress of the aluminum thin film is at stress-free state after annealing at 300°C for 10h. The critical product is found to be reduced from 1,294A/cm to 1,281A/cm when 120MPa of mechanical tensile stress is applied. It increased to 1,315A/cm under 120MPa of mechanical compressive stress. Clearly, electromigration behavior is enhanced by tensile stress and decreased by compressive stress. In the current research, a modified equation for Blech condition is proposed with a stress-dependent effective charge number, the effective charge number increased when tensile stress was applied and decreased when compressive stress was applied.

An immersed boundary method is proposed for the simulation of the interaction of an incompressible flow with rigid bodies. The method is based on a new interpretation of velocity-vorticity formulation and no longer includes the force term which is an essential issue of common immersed boundary methods. The system is considered in an Eulerian frame and retrieving the vorticity in this formulation enforces continuity at the fluid-solid interface and rigid motion of the solid. The method focuses on the mutual kinematic relations between the velocity and vorticity fields and with retrieving the vorticity field and recalculating the velocities yields the solenoidal velocity field. The method is applied to the two dimensional problems and the results show that the solenoidality is satisfied acceptably. The comparisons with 2D test cases are provided to illustrate the capabilities of the proposed method.

The combined effects of Joule and Newtonian heating in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of Jeffrey fluid over a stretching cylinder with heat source/sink are addressed. Suitable transformations are considered to reduce the non-linear boundary layer partial differential equations into the ordinary differential equations. Convergent series solutions of the resulting dimensionless problems are obtained. Effects of emerging physical parameters on the velocity and temperature profiles are examined. Comparison between viscous and Jeffrey fluids for different cases of flat plate and cylinder is made. Numerical values of skin friction coefficient and local Nusselt number are tabulated and analyzed for different values of emerging parameters.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of a diaphragm material on the performance of a microspeaker. The finite element method was adopted to analyze the mode shapes and the displacement of the diaphragm under a force load. The Rayleigh integral was then calculated to determine the radiated sound pressure and frequency response of a loudspeaker. The location of the voice coil was also investigated. Locating the voice coil at approximately 53% to 76% of coil-radius/diaphragm-radius ratio yielded a favorable mode shape distribution and performance for the loudspeaker. In addition, two loudspeaker designs, Models A and B, were analyzed to determine the effects of the diaphragm material. The numerical results of Models A and B, indicated that the mode shape is a crucial factor when considering the materials used in a loudspeaker diaphragm. The property of a material at the inflection point of a mode shape obviously affects the modal frequency. According to this observation, the most crucial first and second axial symmetric modes in a loudspeaker design can be adjusted and the performance can be improved.

The thermal shock resistance (TSR) of ZnS wave-transparent ceramic depends on not only the mechanical and thermal properties of materials, but also the aerodynamic heating, pneumatic pressure, external constraint, size, aspect ratio and other factors in its actual service process. The theoretical model was established by introducing the analytical solution of transient heat conduction problem of ZnS plate under aerodynamic heating into its thermal stress field model and the pneumatic pressure was introduced. The present work mainly focused on the influences of constraint, size and aspect ratio on the critical rupture temperature difference of ZnS plate subjected to aerodynamic heating and pneumatic pressure. The numerical simulation was also conducted to verify the theoretical model. The results show that the large heat transfer condition corresponds to the poor TSR unless the constraint is too strong; the square plate provides the better TSR in case of different pneumatic pressures; a reasonable side length according to the range of pneumatic pressure would lead to the better TSR.

In the provided research, the design of CHE (Compact Heat Exchanger) is evaluated and discussed from the heat transfer aspect. Benefiting from present equations and considering the objective concepts, the procedural chart is proposed for achieving optimal design. The main goal of this research study is implementing a new algorithm for optimization to modify a conventional design of CHE. Nonlinear gradient mathematical modeling with different scenarios on free or related variables is developed to cover the purpose of maximizing total heat transfer capacity. By mathematical programming analysis, a model has been provided for optimal design and developed in the GAMS (Generalized Algebraic Modelling System) software. Also for further model test rig development purpose, the proposed model has been incorporated in Matlab software using independent variants and the accuracy of the responses was again evaluated. The comparison indicated 109W/K difference in the exchanged thermal energy rate compared to the optimal exchanger operation conditions. After introducing case study to this model, an acceptable response with 0.997W/K difference on optimal point was achieved. Solving the model indicated 0.833W/K difference with the optimal point, which confirms the resulted technical responses.

Impulsively started external convection at microscale level is studied numerically in both planar and axisymmetric geometries. Using similarity transformation, the resulting coupled partial and non-linear ordinary differential equations are simultaneously solved by finite differences together with a well established ordinary differential equation solver, over a range of problem parameters. Rarefaction effects within the slip flow regime on the thermal boundary layer response, heat transfer rate and transition time when system experiences sudden changes in surface temperature are analyzed, and a comparison between sudden surface cooling and heating is presented. The results show that the thermal boundary layer thickness, heat transfer rate and the transition time is considerably influenced by the degree of rarefaction. The transition time tends to be less sensitive with increasing rarefaction. The velocity slip and temperature jump factors are found to have opposite effects on the transition time and the heat transfer rate, with the velocity slip factor having the most profound influence on these parameters.

In this study a novel approach for 3D modeling of cylindrical sample of hot mix asphalt (HMA) is presented. To this end, the cylindrical sample was divided into several slices and using a developed algorithm the processed images were extended to 3D volumetric objects to reconstruct the 3D microstructure of HMA. To evaluate the efficiency of the presented 3D model for prediction of mechanical behavior, HMA was regarded as a two-phase mixture; mastic phase and aggregate phase. The asphalt binder, filler, air voids and fine aggregates were considered as mastic with viscoelastic behavior and the aggregate was considered as an elastic material. Two models (Burger and generalized Kelvin) were studied for determining viscoelastic behavior of mastic. Finally, to verify the model using Finite Element Method (FEM) the behavior of the 3D model was simulated under different uniaxial compressive loads. A good agreement was observed between the simulated results and corresponding experimental data which indicates the efficiency of the proposed model to simulate three-dimensional asphalt.

In this study, a fully micromechanical model based on iso-field assumptions is developed for computing the effective coupled thermo-electro-elastic material properties of Macro Fiber Composites (MFCs) in the linear regime. The explicit formulations are derived using the thermo-electro-elastic constitutive equations under the iso-field assumptions and multiple loading conditions. The effects of piezoelectric fiber volume fraction and matrix properties on the effective material constants of MFCs are studied through some examples. In order to validate the accuracy of the present micromechanical formulations, comparisons have been made with other results available in the literature.

A zero-order turbulence closure model of a dry granular dense flow is proposed, with the boundary considered an energy source and sink of the turbulent kinetic energy of the grains. Muller-Liu entropy principle is carried out to derive the equilibrium closure relations, with their dynamic responses postulated from the experimental calibrations. A gravity-driven flow with incompressible grains down an inclined moving plane is studied to investigate the influence of velocity slip near solid boundary on the turbulent features of the flow. While the calculated mean porosity and velocity correspond to the experimental outcomes, increasing velocity slip on the boundary tends to enhance the turbulent dissipation nearby. The distribution of the turbulent dissipation shows a similarity with that of conventional Newtonian fluids in turbulent boundary layer flows. Boundary as an energy sink is more apparent in the zero-order model.

An investigation of unsteady hydromagnetic natural convection heat and mass transfer flow of an electrically conducting, viscous, incompressible and optically thick radiating fluid past an impulsively moving infinite vertical plate embedded in a uniform porous medium in a rotating system with Hall effects in the presence of homogeneous first order chemical reaction is carried out when temperature of the plate has a temporarily ramped profile. Exact solution of the governing equations is obtained in closed form by Laplace transform technique. Expressions for skin friction due to primary and secondary flows and Nusselt number are derived for both ramped temperature and isothermal plates. Expression for Sherwood number is also derived. The numerical values of primary and secondary fluid velocities, fluid temperature and species concentration are displayed graphically whereas those of skin friction are presented in tabular form for various values of pertinent flow parameters. In order to highlight the influence of ramped temperature distribution within the plate on the flow-field, the fluid flow past a ramped temperature plate is compared with the one past an isothermal plate.

The present paper is devoted to the investigation of steady MHD axi-symmetric flow between two infinite stretching disks with slip effects. Our attention lies in obtaining the similarity solutions of the governing partial differential equations. The transformed boundary value problem is solved analytically for a series solution using homotopy analysis method. The convergence of the obtained solution is established and fluid velocity and pressure are analyzed for various set of parameter values. The obtained results are valid for both moderate and large values of Reynolds number.

This paper introduces a unique, efficient, and exact formulation for solving a single-degree-of-freedom system with nonlinear stiffness under a harmonic loading. This formulation is one kind of the piecewise exact method, and its benefit lies in providing the closed-form exact solution in each displacement segment. Since the exact solution is given in each segment, the continuity between two segments can be confirmed. Consequently, no instability errors affect the analysis. To determine the exact solutions in these segments, this research develops a technique that shifts the equilibrium points of the piecewise linear segments, which are discretized from a nonlinear stiffness curve, to new equilibrium points in order to satisfy the typical linear exact solution. Thus, positive- and negative-stiffness linear segments can be solved with this technique. This formulation saves roughly 60% of the calculation time (error < 10−10) as compared to the numerical approximation.

The paper studied the effect of an array of hemispherical substance-units (HSUs) immersed in inviscid and incompressible liquid on resonance frequency of a quartz crystal resonator (QCR) under the thickness-shear mode (TSM) vibrations. A dynamic model of the compound QCR system, consisting of a QCR and HSUs, was established in advance. The frequency equation of the compound QCR system including the liquid-solid coupling was derived subsequently. Numerical results showed the frequency-shift characteristics of the compound system. The obtained results are useful in resonator design and applications.

The present paper studies the three-dimensional, off centered stagnation flow of a Jeffrey fluid over a rotating disk. The governing non-linear equations and their associated boundary conditions are transformed into coupled ordinary differential equations by utilizing an appropriate similarity transformation. Homotopy analysis method is utilized to evaluate the analytical solution in the form of infinite series. Also, the convergence region of the obtained solution is determined and plotted. The effects of pertaining parameters on radial, azimuthal and induced velocities of the fluid flow are presented graphically and discussed. Moreover comparisons have also been made with the previous results as a special case.
