This study adopted the Vector Form Intrinsic Finite Element (VFIFE) method to study the nonlinear vibration of the membrane SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) antenna structure. As the dynamic characteristic of the antenna is mainly determined by the support frame, it can be simplified as an axially loaded cantilever beam. The linear and geometrically nonlinear models of the axially loaded cantilever beam are established. The beam is modeled as discrete mass points which are connected by deformable elements through VFIFE method. A statics analysis is first presented to verify the VFIFE method. Then effects of the geometrical nonlinearity and axial load are investigated. It is believed that the presented study is valuable for better understanding the influences of the geometrical nonlinearity and axial load of the cantilever beam on the structural vibration characteristics.

The journal bearings are used to support high-speed rotors in turbo machinery which often operate above the rotor first bending critical speed. This bearing provide both lateral support and dynamic coefficients: Stiffness, damping, and mass terms, related to machine vibrations. The various methods of identifying journal bearing dynamic characteristics, from measured data, obtained from different measurement systems, are reviewed. The various approaches to the bearing identification problem are discussed. The various data processing methods in the time and frequency domains are presented. Also, vibration and condition monitoring techniques are presented. In this review, the relative strengths and weaknesses of bearing are presented and developments and trends in improving bearing measurements are documented. Future trends of journal bearing are discussed.

In this study, the properties of surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters, including phase velocity and electromechanical coupling coefficient (K2) are investigated. The effective surface permittivity (ESP) method was employed to estimate the K2 of bulk materials (single layer) and multi-layer (double-layer and trilayer) structures. In the cases of bulk materials, the calculation results agree with the experimental data, and the errors are less than 7% for quartz. In the cases of double-layer materials, the phase velocity and K2 of various materials, such as ZnO/Diamond and LiNbO3/Diamond, were acquired, and the results demonstrate that LiNbO3/diamond is the optimal choice for high-frequency SAW devices. For the cases of trilayer, the structure of ZnO/PZT/diamond has relatively high K2 and phase velocity. Therefore, this structure is the optimal trilayer structure for high-frequency SAW devices. The study demonstrates that ESP method can be successfully used for estimating SAW properties in piezoelectric multi-layer structures even though the structures contain nonpiezoelectric film (diamond). The proposed numerical computation has the potential to shorten the developing time of SAW device.

A new type of steel-concrete composite beam with double-box cross-section is proposed in this paper. In order to investigate stress behaviors and deflection characteristics of such composite beam with wide flange considering the shear lag effect, theoretical analysis and experimental study are launched simultaneously. Based on the minimum potential energy principle, governing differential equations in view of the shear lag effect are deduced by energy variational method, and analytical solutions of it's stress and deflection under the effect of symmetrical loading are calculated. The preceding analyses show that relative error is less than 14.71%, with a good agreement, and farther show that this method of theoretical derivation, which is used for analyzing shear lag effect of composite beam with wide flange, has certain reference and guidance.

In this paper, transient response analysis of a circular sandwich plate with a functionally graded material (FGM) central disk and two piezoelectric layers is presented. Material properties of the FGM central disk for the circular sandwich plate are assumed to vary through the structural thickness according to a power law and the Poisson’s ratio is assumed as the same constant. Based on the first-order shear deformation theory and geometric nonlinear relationship, the nonlinear motion equations of the circular sandwich plate are formulated by using the Hamilton’s variational principle, then combining with the boundary and initial conditions, the whole problem is solved by adopting the finite difference method, Newmark method and iterative method. Numerical results are presented to illustrate that the volume fraction index, geometric parameters, mechanical and electrical loads have a great influence on transient response of the circular sandwich plate.

This paper presents a mathematical model and a computational approach for the thermal post-buckling and free vibration in the vicinity of the buckled equilibrium position of microbeams based on the modified couple stress Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and geometrically accurate relation. The governing equations for the whole analysis are established with a intrinsic material length scale parameter to capture the size effect. These equations, in conjunction with the corresponding boundary conditions, are decomposed into two two-point boundary value problems, which are solved using the shooting method. For static deformation, the geometric nonlinearity is involved and the size dependent postbuckling configuration is obtained as a function of temperature rise. For dynamic one, the small amplitude free vibration about the prebuckled position is developed following an assumed harmonic time mode, and the length scale and temperature rise dependent fundamental natural frequency is presented. Numerical computations are executed to illustrate the size dependency in the thermal postbuckling behaviors and fundamental frequency of the vibration around the buckled configuration of microbeams.

This paper presents a regularization scheme for the nearly singular integrals used for 3D elastostatic boundary element analysis. For the regularization process, the local projection coordinates of the source point are first located via an iteration procedure. For planar elements, the boundary integrals are analytically integrated by parts to smooth the drastic fluctuations of their integrands so that the regularized forms can be numerically integrated by any conventional schemes in an usual manner. The validity of the formulations is numerically tested using the Gauss Quadrature scheme. The test shows the accuracy is satisfactory for the distance ratio (distance: Element characteristic length) falling below micro-scale. To further demonstrate our successful implementation, a numerical example is studied with verifications compared with ANSYS analysis.

In this paper, the electro-elastic fields in a functionally gradient piezoelectric strip with an internal semi-infinite electrode are analyzed by using Fourier transform and Wiener-Hopf technique. The exact forms of asymptotic solutions and intensity factor and energy are obtained. The energy density criterion is proposed to study the fracture behavior near the electrode tip. The fracture initiation angle depends on the fracture resistance of the piezoelectric ceramic, bonding strength between piezoelectric and electrode, and the direction of least energy density factor S inside the piezoceramic.

The unsteady laminar incompressible flow of a fluid between two orthogonally moving porous coaxial disks is considered numerically. A transformation is used to reduce the governing partial differential equations (PDEs) to a set of nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations. The effects of physical parameters of interest such as the wall expansion ratio and the permeability Reynolds number on the velocity are discussed in detail.

The present study is to investigate the pressure-driven gas flow in microchannel at no-uniform wall temperature. DSMC is employed to generate the flow field details which are then used in analysis of the slip flow characteristics. The major concern is the influences of thermal creep effect on the pressure-driven slip flow. Thermal creep is resulted from tangential wall temperature gradient. In this work, two kinds of thermal boundary condition are considered. One is the linearly varied temperature (LVT) applied to both walls, the other is that has the bottom wall at a thermal condition combined LVT and adiabatic (AD) wall, i.e. LVT-AD-LVT condition. The present DSMC results reveal that the fluid slip is weakened (enhanced) in the case with a negative (positive) wall temperature gradient. Relatively, thermal creep effect on fluid slip over the adiabatic wall is more pronounced in the presence of negative wall temperature gradient. The mass flowrate is a strong function of the wall temperature gradient. However, there is only little difference between the mass flowrates predicted under the two kinds of thermal conditions studied in the present work.

Constitutive models based on fractional calculus are utilized to investigate the viscoelastic response of thermally activated shape memory polymers (SMPs). Fractional calculus-based viscoelastic equations are fitted to experimental data existing in literature compared with traditional viscoelastic models. In addition, a fractional rheology model is applied to simulate the isothermal recovery of an amorphous SMP. The fit results show a significant improvement in the description of the strain recovery response of SMP by the fractional calculus method.

In this paper, we present an analytical solution to the general three-dimensional elasticity problem in a layer, whose Young’s modulus varies exponentially within the thickness coordinate and the Poisson’s ratio is constant. By making use of the direct integration method, the complete set of the governing equations in terms of stresses has been formed. The latter equations were reduced to separate equations for each stress-tensor component and then solved by means of the Fourier double-integral transformation with respect to the planar coordinates.

The present study is a theoretical investigation of the laminar flow and convective heat transfer of water/alumina nanofluid inside a horizontal annulus with a streamwise moving inner cylinder. A modified, two-component, four-equation, nonhomogeneous equilibrium model is employed for the alumina/water nanofluid, which fully accounts for the effect of the nanoparticle volume fraction distribution. To determine the effects of thermal boundary conditions on the migration of the nanoparticles, two cases are considered: constant heat flux at the outer wall with an adiabatic inner wall (Case A) and constant heat flux at the inner wall with an adiabatic outer wall (Case B). The numerical results indicate that the thermal boundary conditions at the pipe walls significantly affect the nanoparticle distribution, particularly in cases where the ratio of Brownian motion to thermophoretic diffusivities is small. Moreover, increasing the velocity of the moving inner cylinder reduces the heat transfer rate for Case A. Conversely, in Case B, the movement of the inner cylinder enhances the heat transfer rate, and anomalous heat transfer enhancement occurs when the thermophoretic force is dominant (in larger nanoparticles).

The vibration control of smart structure is considered in this paper. Membrane SAR antenna structure with piezoelectric sensors and actuators is taken as an example. The dynamic model is build up based on vector form intrinsic finite element (VFIFE) method. The four nodes membrane element, sensor element and actuator element for VFIFE are presented. By decentralized control stratagem, the bending and torsional vibrations of the membrane SAR antenna can be decoupled on measurement and driving control. The fuzzy control and adaptive fuzzy control are applied to suppress the bending and torsional vibrations of the membrane SAR structure. In the numerical experiment section, form finding is first carried out, then vibration control simulations are studied. The results demonstrate that adaptive fuzzy control algorithm can suppress the vibrations more effectively than the fuzzy control algorithm.

A continuation method, accompanied with a linear stability analysis, is employed to investigate the bifurcation diagram of the flow solutions, as well as the multiple flow states in a cavity with different aspect ratios for parallel motion of two facing lids. The Reynolds number proportional to the wall velocity is used as the continuation parameter, and the evolution of the bifurcation diagrams in cases with different aspect ratios is illustrated. The induced flow patterns are highly dependent upon both the aspect ratios and the moving velocity of the walls. Three different types of bifurcation diagrams and their corresponding flow states are classified according to the aspect ratios. One stable symmetric flow state and one stable asymmetric flow state are identified. The stable asymmetric flow state is obtained at a high aspect ratio and a low Reynolds number. Meanwhile, the regions of stable and unstable flows are distinguished according to the different aspect ratios.

In the present paper, the problem on normal low-velocity impact of a solid upon an isotropic spherical shell is studied without considering the changes in the geometrical dimensions of the contact domain. At the moment of impact, shock waves (surfaces of strong discontinuity) are generated in the target, which then propagate along the shell during the process of impact. Behind the wave fronts up to the boundary of the contact domain, the solution is constructed with the help of the theory of discontinuities and one-term ray expansions. The ray method is used outside the contact spot, but the Laplace transform method is applied within the contact region. As a result, the exact solution of the contact force is determined as a function of time. This model is intended to be used in simulating crash scenarios in frontal impacts, and to provide an effective tool to estimate the severity of effect on the human head and to estimate brain injury risks.

A balanced cavitation bubble is released near the rigid wall in the sound field generated by the incidence plane wave and its reflecting wave. With the modified boundary integral equation, the dynamics of bubble is solved considering the compressibility of fluid in this paper. Also the Bernoulli equation as the boundary condition for cavitation bubble in sound field is deduced using Euler equation. Since the arbitrary incidence angle of acoustic wave, the three-dimensional model is utilized. The bubble will expand or contract at first according to the initial phase of acting acoustic pressure on bubble surface. And during the contraction phase, the liquid jet with high speed will be generated pointing to rigid wall but be deflected to the incidence direction of acoustic wave. The oblique degree of jet will be affected by the incidence angle and initial distance between bubble center and rigid wall. The oscillation amplitude of bubble will be affected by the incidence amplitude and incidence frequency, but be limited by the rigid wall. Since the compressibility of fluid, the perturbation will propagate to the far-field. Thus the oscillation amplitude of bubble will be reduced.

We present a general solution approach for analysis of transversely isotropic cylindrical tubes and circular plates. On the basis of Hamiltonian state space formalism in a systematic way, rigorous solutions of the twisting problems are determined by means of separation of variables and symplectic eigenfunction expansion.

The aim of this experimental study is to investigate impact behaviors of the composite single-lap adhesive joints. The increasing impact energies, which are ranged from approximately 5 J to 30 J, are performed at the center of the composite plates having three different overlap lengths. It is shown that the overlap lengths and impact energy levels affect considerably the impact responses of the composite single lap joints. It is also shown that the bending stiffness of the composite increases by increase in the overlap length. An energy profiling method (EPM) is used to identify the penetration and perforation thresholds of composite lap joints. The damaged composite plates are visually inspected.

In this paper, two formulations in explicit form to derive the fundamental solutions for two and three dimensional unsteady unbounded Stokes flows due to a mass source and a point force are presented, based on the vector calculus method and also the Hörmander’s method. The mathematical derivation process for the fundamental solutions is detailed. The steady fundamental solutions of Stokes equations can be obtained from the unsteady fundamental solutions by the integral process. As an application, we adopt fundamental solutions: an unsteady Stokeslet and an unsteady potential dipole to validate a simple case that a sphere translates in Stokes or low-Reynolds-number flow by using the singularity method instead by the traditional method which in general limits to the assumption of oscillating flow. It is concluded that this study is able to extend the unsteady Stokes flow theory to more general transient motions by making use of the fundamental solutions of the linearly unsteady Stokes equations.
