I am honoured that the Royal Institute of Navigation has invited me to give the E. G. R. Taylor lecture for 1992. These lectures, held annually, were funded by well-wishes in various societies to celebrate Professor Eva Taylor's 80th birthday. As a scholar, Professor Taylor moved in many spheres. I have chosen a subject which seems appropriate to her pioneering work in the history of navigation and the marine sciences.

Some of the maps and charts were not returned to the King and passed into Lord Dartmouth's family collections. These were sold at Sotheby's on 9 March 1948 (Catalogue... 8th March, 1948, Second Day, pp. 34–43). Purchasers included the National Maritime Museum and Kraus, H. P. of New York. The atlases in the royal collections were in the library at St James, and thus are preserved for posterity.Google Scholar

33 I wrote to Daniel Defoe's biographer Moore, J. R. about this account of the marooned sailors of Juan Fernandez. I wondered if it had partly inspired Robinson Crusoe, although this is generally known to be based on Alexander Selkirk's stay on the island. Moore replied that he thought not, but suggested that Jonathan Swift, a friend of the Earl of Radnor, might have known it and that this might explain the name of Richard Simpson as Gulliver's cousin.Google Scholar
