In this paper we give some properties of the pairwise perfectly normal spaces defined by Lane. In particular we prove that a space (X, P, Q) is pairwise perfectly normal if and only if every P(Q)–closed set is the zero of a P(Q)–l.s.c. and Q(P)–u.s.c. function. Also we characterize the pairwise perfect normality in terms of sequences of semicontinuous functions by means of a result which contains the known Tong's characterization of perfectly normal topological spaces, whose proof we modify by using the technique of binary relations.

It is shown that a normed linear space admitting (Chebyshev) centers is complete. Then the ideas in the proof of this fact are used to show that every incomplete CLUR (compactly locally uniformly rotund) normed linear space contains a closed bounded convex subset B with the following properties: (a) B does not contain any farthest point; (b) B does not contain any nearest point (to the elements of its complement).

Suppose that in a complete graph on N points, each edge is given arbitrarily either the color red or the color blue, but the total number of blue edges is fixed at T. We find the minimum number of monochromatic triangles in the graph as a function of N and T. The maximum number of monochromatic triangles presents a more difficult problem. Here we propose a reasonable conjecture supported by examples.

We obtain various refinements and generalizations of a classical inequality of S. N. Bernstein on trigonometric polynomials. Some of the results take into account the size of one or more of the coefficients of the trigonometric polynomial in question. The results are obtained using interpolation formulas.

A proof is given of the Euler-Maclaurin sum formula, on a Banach space of differentiable vector-valued functions of bounded exponential growth, using the Laplace transformation. Some related summation formulae are proved by the same methods. Properties of the standard summation operator are proved, namely spectral properties and boundedness, continuity and differentiability results.

We establish a measure of algebraic independence for values of E-functions which is more nearly effectively computable than the previous one. When the system of equations meets either of two criteria, then the measure becomes entirely effectively computable.

Let G be a p–group with cyclic L(G) = Z. Then L(G) = {Z < H ≦ G|H′ ∩ Z = (1)}, a poset ordered under inclusion. Then the associated simplicial complex |L(G)| is homotopic to a bouquet of spheres. A subgroup E of G is called a CES if CG (E) = Z = L(E) and if E/Z is elementary. Then |L(G)| is homotopic to the one-point union of the |L(E)| for all CES's E in G. If |E/Z| = p2n then |L(E)| is homotopic to a one-point union of pn2 (n– 1)-spheres.

It is shown that a weakly compact convex set in a locally convex space is a zonoform if and only if it is the order continuous image of an order interval in a Dedekind complete Riesz space. While this result implies the Kluv´nek characterization of the range of a vector measure, the techniques of the present paper are purely order theoretic.

In this paper “a map” denotes an arbitrary (everywhere defined, or partial, or even multi-valued) mapping. A map is constant if any two elements belonging to its domain have precisely the same images under this map. We characterize those semigroups which can be isomorphic to semigroups of constant maps or to involuted semigroups of constant maps.

The calculus for equational implication languages given by Selman is generalized to handle the logical equivalent if the if…then…else… construct of high level programming languages. The relevance of these results to current investigations in the algebraic specifications of data types is discussed.

We prove, by constructing a function with given parameters, that the estimate by G. V. Chudnovsky of the number of points at which a meromorphic function has algebraic Taylor coefficients is optimal. The construction is carried out by the use of interpolation series.

In this paper we characterize boundedly laterally complete Riesz spaces, boundedly laterally complete Riesz spaces with the lateral boundedness property and Riesz spaces in which every principal ideal is finite dimensional. The characterizations are given in terms of extension properties of certain Riesz homomorphisms.

A compensator is defined for a point process in two dimensions. It is shown that a Poisson process is characterized by a continuous deterministic compensator. Sufficient conditions are given for convergence in distribution of a sequence of two-dimensional point processes in the Skorokhod topology to a Poisson process when the corresponding sequence of compensators converges pointwise in probability to a continuous deterministic function.

Generalised wreath products of permutation groups were discussed in a paper by Bailey and us. This note determines the orbits of the action of a generalised wreath product group on m–tuples (m ≥ 2) of elements of the product of the base sets on the assumption that the action on each component is m–transitive. Certain related results are also provided.

Rational abelian groups, that is, torsion-free abelian groups of rank one, are characterized by their types. This paper characterizes rational nilpotent groups of class two, that is, nilpotent groups of class two in which the center and central factor group are direct sums of rational abelian groups. This characterization is done according to the types of the summands of the center and the central factor group. Using these types and some cohomological techniques it is possible to determine the automorphism group of the nilpotent group in question by performing essentially matrix computations.

In particular, the automorphism groups of rational nilpotent groups of class two and rank three are completely described. Specific examples are given of semicomplete and pseudocomplete nilpotent groups.

Alspach and Sutcliffe call a graph X(S, q, F) 2-circulant if it consists of two isomorphic copies of circulant graphs X(p, S) and X(p, qS) on p vertices with “cross-edges” joining one another in a prescribed manner. In this paper, we enumerate the nonisomorphic classes of 2-circulant graphs X(S, q, F) such that |S| = m and |F| = k. We also determine a necessary and sufficient condition for a 2-circulant graph to be a GRR. The nonisomorphic classes of GRR on 2p vertices are also enumerated.

For Fredholm equations of the first kind with continuous kernels we investigate the uniform convergence of a general class of regularization methods. Applications are made to Tikhonov regularization and Landweber's iteration method.

It has been known for over twenty years that every planar graph is Pfaffian. Recently a characterisation of planar graphs in terms of strict maximal odd rings has been discovered. This paper attempts to elucidate the connection between the Pfaffian property and planarity by characterising Pfaffian bipartite graphs in terms of maximal odd rings.
