As with most instructors, I have a problem with microscopy students. Quite often when viewing an EDS X-ray spectrum there will be a small peak at 2 times the energy of the main peak. My students will say, “What peak is that?” I will say, “It's a sum peak.” “We know it's some peak, but which one?” “A sum peak,” I say. Frustrated, they respond, “We know it's some peak…and stop talking like Lawrence Welk!” Can you help me?

I need to remove panels on a table-top SEM. Have you ever done this? I want to have the turbo molecular pump serviced.

I am having a lot of trouble while getting my images focused. The image moves dramatically while focusing; it moves quite a bit even at low focus steps and at low magnifications! I am very frustrated and hope you can resolve this problem.

I am engaged to a fellow lab mate. Her lab coat flows as she walks; I am spellbound by her ability to pour gels. I find myself daydreaming of her as I pipette aliquots. Alas, I discovered that she has been dallying with a physicist in the next building! I am inclined to confront the scoundrel and my fiancée. I am not normally a violent sort, but my dander has been mightily raised. How would you deal with this situation?

I have been having difficulty getting some of my recent papers accepted in top-tier journals. The editors say that my research is solid but that it is just not very exciting. One even said my work was not “sexy.” Do you have any advice as to how I can jazz up my manuscripts?
