Rosasite and aurichalcite occur with other copper, zinc, and also lead minerals in Masson Cavern, Rutland Cavern, and other workings in the Heights of Abraham, Matloek Bath, Derbyshire. Partial analyses of two specimens each of rosasite and aurichalcite show Cu : Zn ratios typical of the respective species. They appear to have been formed by the action of solutions containing zinc on disseminated chalcopyrite. The infra-red absorption spectra of malachite, rosasite, aurichalcite, and hydrozincite, examined by the mull technique, are shown to fall into two groups corresponding with the structural groups established by X-ray work. Twin absorption maxima at O-H stretching frequencies are present in the spectra of malachite and of rosasite.

Two specimens of almeriïte from the type locality have been examined by chemical analysis, d.t.a., and X-ray powder photography and shown to be identical with natroalunite. A little illite and kaolinite are present as impurities. X-ray powder data for natroalunite are presented.

An X-ray investigation has been made of synthetic pyroxenes in the system acmite-diopside, crystallized at 750° C and 1000 kg/cm2 water-vapour pressure. Lattice parameters of these pyroxenes have been determined by least squares analyses of powder diffraction patterns and show an approximately linear relationship with composition, plotted as weight per cent. A rapid X-ray method has also been devised for the determination of the compositions of pyroxenes of this series.

An amphibole occurring in the Mbozi syenite–gabbro complex in SW. Tanganyika approaches very closely to the theoretical end-member Na2Ca;it has α 1·705, pale to light yellow, β 1·713, deep blue-green, γ 1·715, deep blue to green to black, with γ ∥ [010] and β : [001] about 7 to 14°; absorption γ > β ≫ α, with the maximum absorption on (010) at 9 to 12° to [001]. The mineral shows anomalous bright orange-red interference colours and incomplete extinction in sections parallel to (010) even in monochromatic light. X-ray powder data are given. A very similar amphibole occurs in the Darkainle nepheline-syenite complex, Borama district, Somali Republic.

Reyerite from the original locality in Greenland has been re-examined using chemical analysis, infra-red absorption, X-ray powder and single-crystal diffraction, and thermal weight-loss curves. The unit cell is trigonal with a 9·74, c 19·04 Å, and the space group is probably P3¯. The unit cell contents are probably best represented as KCa14(Si24O60)(OH)5.5H2O, with some minor replacements. The molecular water is lost reversibly below 400° C. There are indications that the crystal structure is based on Si6O18 rings resembling those in beryl, but linked into sheets by additional tetrahedra.

Reyerite closely resembles truscottite, a mineral found originally in Sumatra, but there are distinct differences, especially in the infra-red pattern. It is not yet certain whether or not the two minerals should be considered as distinct species. Synthetic preparations examined resembled truscottite more closely than reyerite.

The customary illumination by a ‘coverglass’ inclined at 45 degrees is replaced by a double reflection. The beam from the horizontal collimating tube is first reflected from a highly reflecting mirror at the back of the unit, then downward from a coverglass placed at the top of the unit. With this arrangement the coverglass is inclined at less than 22½ degrees to the axis of the microscope, with a similar reduction of the angle of incidence. The correction ratio for rotation by upward passage of light through the coverglass is now reduced from 6:5 to the almost negligible value 21:20. There is a corresponding improvement in the homogeneity of extinction over the microscope field.

A new zeolite closely related to phillipsite and gismondine is recorded from thirty localities in the Tertiary basalts of Antrim and eastern Iceland, and the name garronite is proposed. Four chemical analyses indicate a composition of NaCa2·5A16Si10O32.13·5H2O. Garronite differs chemically from phillipsite in having a very low content of potash, and from gismondine in containing less lime, alumina, and water; optically garronite is intermediate between these two zeolites.

Olivine composition can be rapidly and accurately obtained by using standard (Straumanis-mounting) 57·3 mm X-ray powder cameras. A determinative curve based on analysed natural olivines has been constructed by plotting the mol. % Fo against the spacing of back-reflection line 174. The regression equation for the composition range Fo100 to Fo30 is

using Fe-Kα1 radiation. The fayalite end (Fo30 to Fo0) of the determinative curve shows a relatively sharp break from a straight-line relationship of d-spacing versus composition. Practical applications of the determinative curve are briefly presented.

Spurrite-bearing contact-metasomatic mineral assemblages occur with a few of the many rhyolite stocks intrusive into Georgetown (Cretaceous) limestone in the Encantada district of northern Coahuila, Mexico. The contact-metasomatic suites are found associated only with rhyolites that solidified within the thick Georgetown limestone. Rhyolites that penetrated through the limestone have sharp contacts commonly marked by perlitic contact breccias. The structural form of all the rhyolites indicates intrusion under high pressure.

Three distinct contact-mineral suites have been recognized: Foliated garnetwollastonite rocks occur adjacent to the rhyolite, whereas spurrite is only found further from the intrusive. The inner side of the spurrite-bearing zone is characterized by foliated spurrite-garnet-periclase rocks, whereas the outer side of the spurrite zone consists of a massive, coarse-grained, spurrite-rankinite-periclase rock, which has a sharp contact with the outermost foliated marble zone. At one location, massive spurrite occupies ‘dikes’ radial to the intrusive, which are post-dated by wollastonite-bearing gehlenite-diopside rocks.

It is concluded that the stages of rhyolite emplacement include: First, preliminary high-pressure structural site preparation accompanied by intrusion of rhyolite and metasomatic introduction of Si and Al into preheated cap rock. Then crystallization of the metasomatic zone, under conditions of upward pressure exerted by the rhyolite, to give the features of the spurrite zone; followed by conversion of the inner side of the spurrite zone to a wollastonite-bearing assemblage.

Gismondine is recorded from the Tertiary basalts of the North Atlantic region, from a total of some 40 localities in Antrim and Iceland. It occupies a well-marked position in the sequence of zeolite zones in the lavas, and the characteristic associates are chabazite, thomsonite, and phillipsite. Five new chemical analyses of gismondine from these localities show a negligible content of potash, and indicate plagioclase-type substitution, giving a series ranging from near Ca8Al16Si16O64.34H2O to near Na2·5Ca5·5Al13·5Si18·5O64.34H2O. Substitution of NaSi for CaAl leads to a decrease in refringence, birefringence, and density.

Yellow sapphirine with a doubled b-axis occurs in enstatite-hornblende-sapphirine rocks at the contact between dolomite marble and yoderite-quartz-talc schist on Mautia Hill, Tanganyika. It has refractive indices α 1·725± 0·002, γ 1·732±0·002, 2Vγ66°, pleochroism a pale yellow, β pale lime green, γ pale pinkish orange, and a composition corresponding to Mg3·67Mn0·04Fe2+0·17Ti0·01Fe3+0·33Als·07Si1·75O20·00. Its unit-cell dimensions are approximately a 9·85 Å, b 28·6Å, c 9·96 Å, β 110° 30′, and its diffraction pattern exhibits diffuse streaks parallel to b*, on which lie diffuse intensity maxima representing the relics of certain types of sharp reflexions of normal sapphirine ; this is interpreted as indicative of partial MgAl ordering. The associated enstatite and hornblende have compositions Mg7·58Mn0·02Fe2+0·02Ti0·01Fe3+0·13Al[6]0·25Al0·41[4]Si7·59O24·00 and K0·04Na0·16Ca1·95Mg4·37Mn0·01Fe0·052+Ti0·04Fe0·253+Al0·42[6]Al0·91[4]Si7·09O22·24(OH)1·76respectively and are accompanied by accessory hematite and pseudobrookite. Preliminary heating experiments have demonstrated the transformation of single crystals of partially ordered Mautia sapphirine to single crystals of a defect spinel phase after 48 hours at 1287° C in air; normal disordered Panrimali sapphirine remains unchanged by similar heat treatment.

A new mineral, akaganéite, has been found in limonite deposits and has been shown to be identical with synthetic β-FeOOH. It contains no chlorine. The micro-morphology of β-FeOOH as it occurs as akaganéite and as it is produced by a solid-state transformation from FeCl2.4H2O , by the hydrolysis of dilute FeCl3 solutions, and by the hydrolysis of very concentrated FeCl3 a solutions, has been studied, chiefly by electron microscopy and diffraction. Some modes of colloidal association of the particles of β-FeOOH are described.

Epididymite, determined by means of its optical properties, X-ray powder pattern, and spectrographic analysis, was found in a desilicated pegmatite near Věžná, Western Moravia, Czechoslovakia. It was formed contemporaneously with minor amounts of milarite in a late hydrothermal stage by the action of sodium-rich solutions on beryl. This is the first occurrence of epididymite and milarite as alteration products of beryl and the first findings of epididymite in any other paragenesis than that of alkaline pegmatites. The optical properties of epididymite are re-examined and older data rejected.

A chemical and modal analysis of the marble, together with chemical analyses of the coexisting spinel and the chondrodite-humite mixture are given. The spinel, a 8·101 ± 0·001 Å, n 1·731 ± 0·003, is much richer in iron (Niggli's mg 0·90), than the humite mixture (mg 0·99), which agrees with the only previous analysis of a coexisting spinel and humite mineral. It was not possible to separate the two humite minerals from each other and analyse them, but the analysis of the mixture shows less iron than any previously analysed chondrodite or humite; the composition is very near to that of humite although the mixture contains at least 50 % chondrodite. It is pointed out that there are serious discrepancies between the chemical analyses of some of the humite minerals and their accepted structural formulae. The possibility that some humite minerals contain irregular numbers of olivine and Mg(OH,F)2-TiO2 layers would fit the available chemical analyses of the humite minerals very well but more structural work is needed as the present scanty X-ray results do not confirm this view. It is suggested that Ti substitution in the humite minerals is primarily controlled by the availability of F in the rock.

The Wairarapa Valley hypersthene-olivine chondrite, found about 1863, has been analysed with the following result: SiO2 35·72, TiO2 0·11, Al2O3 2·91, Cr2O3 0·48, FeO 12·42, MnO 0·28, MgO 23·28, CaO 1·73, Na2O 0·96, K2O 0·20, P2O5 0·31, Fe 12·61, Ni 1·50, Co 0·04, FeS 5·46, Cl 0·07, H2O+ 1·05, H2O− 0·48, less O for Cl 0·03; total 99·58 %. D. 3·65. The phases present are kamacite, taenite, plessite, troilite, magnetite, chromite, olivine Fa16, bronzite Fs15, possibly enstatite, plagioclase An25, and (?) maskelynite An9. The structures of the silicate phases and those disclosed by etching the metal phase are illustrated and described.

The results of reconnaissance melting experiments on Tertiary granophyres and Torridonian arkose at 1000 kg/cm2 water-vapour pressure show that the melting behaviour of these rocks can be viewed in relation to the synthetic system NaAlSi3O8-KAlSi3O8-SiO2-H2O. By analogy with this system, P-T curves are constructed for Skye granophyres and, viewed in relation to the stability of tridymite, the depth and temperature of emplacement are estimated. Further estimates of the likely depth of magma generation, and the behaviour of the country rocks at that level, lead to the conclusion that most of the Tertiary granitic rocks were produced through partial melting of Lewisian basement rocks, the heat being provided by the basic magmas available during this volcanic episode. Subsidiary amounts of granitic magma were similarly derived from higher levels, within the Torridonian arkose group, and evidence is provided for the depth and temperature at which these, together with tridymite-bearing metamorphosed arkose in Rhum, were produced.
