Abstract

Several agencies in charge of nuclear waste management consider the use of compacted bentonites as engineered barriers for the migration of radionuclides towards the geosphere. The geochemical processes occurring in the clay buffer system are of capital importance for the assessment of a HLW repository performance. Therefore, it is necessary to develop tools able to deal with the complex interactions between water and bentonite, submitted simultaneously to a thermal field and water flow. These tools may be referenced as thermo-hydro-geochemical (THG) modelling codes
