Experimental equipment has been developed consisting of a compression machine interfaced with an atomic force microscope. This equipment is particularly suited to the analysis of fine slip line structures on a nanometer scale and to follow in situ plastic flow from the emergence of the first few dislocations from the bulk crystal to the stages of work hardening. The motivations, instrumentation and results on the γ phase of Ni based superalloy are described.
