Optically Induced Condensation of Impurity Excitations in Transparent Solids
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 10 February 2011
Abstract
The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with impurities in transparent solids is studied for the case when interactions between excitations become significant. It is shown that intense optical radiation leads to condensation of the excitations of impurities. The condensed excited state, consisting of excited impurities, is an energetically favourable phase, which minimises the energy of the system. Nevertheless, condensation, as a rule, causes mechanical stresses, in some cases followed by either redistribution of impurities or even breaches of solids.
