Abstract

A method for the preparation of dental restorative composites based on an organicinorganic hybrid material is presented. A sol-gel process was used to produce composites comprised of submicron silica in a polymer matrix. Using alcohols such as, 3-allyloxy-1, 2-propanediol and 2, 3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylate in combination with polysilicic acid or cyclic siloxane precursors, modified siloxanes are produced which can be polymerized photochemically with concurrent hydrolysis and condensation to generate a silica-reinforced polymer with superior mechanical properties and abrasion resistance.
