Japanese words are transcribed according to the Hepburn system. Japanese names are given according to Japanese usage with the family name first, except in cases where the person has westernized his or her own name; surnames are indicated in small caps to avoid confusion. Where various English translations of Japanese words, names for institutions etc. are in use, an effort has been made to choose the most common one.
