An automated method of monitoring the feeding and liveweight characteristics of dairy cows has been developed with the following properties.

  1. 1 Minimal disturbance of animal behaviour

  2. 2 Use of proven, commercially available components

  3. 3 Easy to operate

  4. 4 Records data on

  1. i) forage intake

  2. ii) concentrate intake

  3. iii) liveweight

  4. iv) frequency and duration of meals
