The Kepler Mission was designed to measure the frequency of Earth-like planets in the habitable zone of Sun-like stars. A requirement for determining the underlying planet population from a sample of detected planets is understanding the completeness of that sample—what fraction of the planets that could have been discovered in a given data set were actually detected. Here we describe an experiment designed to address a specific aspect of that question, which is the issue of signal throughput efficiency. We investigate the extent to which the Kepler pipeline preserves transit signals by injecting simulated transit signals into the pixel-level data, processing the modified pixels through the pipeline, and measuring their detection statistics. For the single channel that we examine initially, we inject simulated transit signal trains into the pixel time series of each of the 1801 targets for the 89 days that constitute Quarter 3. For the 1680 that behave as expected in the pipeline, on average we find the strength of the injected signal is recovered at 99.6% of the strength of the original signal. Finally we outline the further work required to characterise the completeness of the Kepler pipeline.

Super H2O outbursts accompany star formation. We have been studying this phenomenon in Orion KL starting in 1971.8.

Cl J1449+0856 is a spectroscopically confirmed galaxy cluster at z ~ 2. The detection of a faint, extended X-ray emission, suggestive of an already evolved, partially relaxed structure, puts this system among the most distant “established” clusters rather than in the realm of z≳2 proto-clusters. This gives us a chance of studying galaxies in an evolved overdense environment very close to their formation epoch, and in particular to trace the evolution of early-type galaxies in clusters back to ten billion years ago.

Ultra high energy cosmogenic neutrinos could be most efficiently detected in dense, radio frequency (RF) transparent media via the Askaryan effect. Building on the expertise gained by RICE, ANITA and IceCube's radio extension in the use of the Askaryan effect in cold Antarctic ice, we are currently developing an antenna array known as ARA (The Askaryan Radio Array) to be installed in boreholes extending 200 m below the surface of the ice near the geographic South Pole. The unprecedented scale of ARA, which will cover a fiducial area of ≈ 100 square kilometers, was chosen to ensure the detection of the flux of neutrinos suggested by the observation of a drop in high energy cosmic ray flux consistent with the GZK cutoff by HiRes and the Pierre Auger Observatory. Funding to develop the instrumentation and install the first prototypes has been granted, and the first components of ARA were installed during the austral summer of 2010–2011. Within 3 years of commencing operation, the full ARA will exceed the sensitivity of any other instrument in the 0.1-10 EeV energy range by an order of magnitude. The primary goal of the ARA array is to establish the absolute cosmogenic neutrino flux through a modest number of events. This information would frame the performance requirements needed to expand the array in the future to measure a larger number of neutrinos with greater angular precision in order to study their spectrum and origins.

The poleward magnetic field streams on time-latitude diagram of the photospheric magnetic field of the Sun during 1975–2011 (Kitt Peak NSO, SOLIS NSO, SOHO MDI data) are modeled. We performed simulations in terms of probability density function and bipole orientation according to Joy's law and Hale's cycle. The difference between distributions of leading and trailing fluxes of bipolar sunspots defines the so-called surplus. Finally, magnetic field streams and polar field reversals are a result of meridional drift of a surplus to the poles.

The New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST) is a new generation ground-based solar facility of China. One of the post-focus instruments is the multi-channel high-resolution imaging system, which is designed to simultaneously observe the dynamic gas motion in the solar photosphere and chromosphere. Since October of 2010 it has been operational in the NVST and some necessary updates were performed in past 2 years. Here we first give a general introduction of this system, and then we exhibit one near-limb observation of solar filaments obtained using this system. By this communication, we would like to show the potential ability to perform the high resolution observation of solar filaments (prominences) using the multi-channel imaging system in the NVST.

Central compact objects (CCOs) are neutron stars that are found near the center of supernova remnants, and their association with supernova remnants indicates these neutron stars are young (≲ 104 yr). Here we review the observational properties of CCOs and discuss implications, especially their inferred magnetic fields. X-ray timing and spectral measurements suggest CCOs have relatively weak surface magnetic fields (~ 1010 − 1011 G). We argue that, rather than being created with intrinsically weak fields, CCOs are born with strong fields and we are only seeing a weak surface field that is transitory and evolving. This could imply that CCOs are one manifestation in a unified picture of neutron stars.

Recent simulation and observational data have been used to investigate the ability of Kozai oscillations to explain the formation of “hot Jupiter” planetary systems. One of the first exoplanets discovered, τ Boo Ab, orbits a star with a binary companion, making it an excellent testbed for this scenario. We have written a three-dimensional Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulator to constrain the orbit of the distant stellar companion τ Boo B, and are currently deriving orbital parameters and confidence intervals. These orbital parameters will confirm or reject Kozai oscillations as a plausible formation mechanism for τ Boo Ab.

The methanol masers associated with G35.20-1.74 were monitored at 12178 MHz for four years and 6668 MHz for five years using the 26m Hartebeesthoek telescope. This source showed irregular variability and a single large flare event during the monitoring window.

We review and discuss results of our survey of variable stars towards the Galactic Centre and their distances. In our near-infrared monitoring survey using IRSF/SIRIUS, we detected a number of Miras and Cepheids (both classical and type II) within 20 arcmin of the Galactic Centre. These distance indicators yield a distance to the Galactic Centre of between 7.5 and 8.5 kpc. A new calibration of the red clump also leads to a distance of ~ 8 kpc. For these indicators, which are luminosity-based, a large uncertainty resides in the correction for the foreground extinction, which depends on the reddening law. Nevertheless, our estimates are consistent with previous estimates based the kinematics of stars near the Galactic Centre, and this supports the reddening law we use.

We estimate the outer radius of the accretion disk in HLX-1 from its optical brightness and from the exponential timescale of the decline in the X-ray lightcurve after an outburst. We find that the disk is an order of magnitude smaller than the semimajor axis of the orbit. If the disk size is determined by the circularization radius near periastron, the eccentricity of the binary system must be ≳ 0.95. We report on the discovery of Hα emission during the 2012 outburst, with a single-peaked, narrow profile (consistent with a nearly face-on view), and a central velocity displaced by ≈ 490 km s−1 from that of the host galaxy.

The Kepler Mission simultaneously measures the brightness of more than 150,000 stars every 29.4 minutes primarily for the purpose of transit photometry. Over the course of its 3.5-year primary mission Kepler has observed over 190,000 distinct stars, announcing 2,321 planet candidates, 2,165 eclipsing binaries, and 105 confirmed planets. As Kepler moves into its 4-year extended mission, the total number of transit-like features identified in the light curves has increased to as many as ~18,000. This number of signals has become intractable for human beings to inspect by eye in a thorough and timely fashion. To mitigate this problem we are developing machine learning approaches to perform the task of reviewing the diagnostics for each transit signal candidate to establish a preliminary list of planetary candidates ranked from most credible to least credible. Our preliminary results indicate that random forests can classify potential transiting planet signatures with an accuracy of more than 98.6% as measured by the area under a receiver-operating curve.

Rotating Radio Transients (RRATs) are a class of pulsars characterized by sporadic bursts of radio emission, which make them difficult to detect in typical periodicity-based pulsar searches. Using newly developed post-processing techniques for automatically identifying single bright astrophysical pulses, such as those emitted from RRATs, we have discovered approximately 30 new RRAT candidates in data from the Green Bank Telescope 350 MHz drift-scan survey. A total of 6 of these have already been confirmed and the remainder look extremely promising. Here we describe these techniques and present the most recent results on these new RRAT candidates.

Cometary nuclei consist of aggregates of interstellar dust particles less than ~1 μm in diameter and can produce rocky dust particles as a result of the sublimation of ice as comets enter the inner solar system. Samples of fine-grained particles known as chondritic porous interplanetary dust particles (CP-IDPs), possibly from comets, have been collected from the Earth's stratosphere. Owing to their fine-grained texture, these particles were previously thought to be condensates formed directly from interstellar gas. However, coarse-grained chondrule-like objects have recently been observed in samples from comet 81P/Wild 2. The chondrule-like objects are chemically distinct from chondrules in meteoritic chondrites, possessing higher MnO contents (0.5 wt%) in olivine and low-Ca pyroxene. In this study, we analyzed AMM samples by secondary electron microscopy and backscattered electron images for textural observations and compositional analysis. We identified thirteen AMMs with characteristics similar to those of the 81P/Wild 2 samples, and believe that recognition of these similarities necessitates reassessment of the existing models of chondrule formation.

The magnetic configuration hosting prominences can be a large-scale helical magnetic flux rope. As a necessary step towards future prominence formation studies, we report on a stepwise approach to study flux rope formation. We start with summarizing our recent three-dimensional (3D) isothermal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation where a flux rope is formed, including gas pressure and gravity. This starts from a static corona with a linear force-free bipolar magnetic field, altered by lower boundary vortex flows around the main polarities and converging flows towards the polarity inversion. The latter flows induce magnetic reconnection and this forms successive new helical loops so that a complete flux rope grows and ascends. After stopping the driving flows, the system relaxes to a stable helical magnetic flux rope configuration embedded in an overlying arcade. Starting from this relaxed isothermal endstate, we next perform a thermodynamic MHD simulation with a chromospheric layer inserted at the bottom. As a result of a properly parametrized coronal heating, and due to radiative cooling and anisotropic thermal conduction, the system further relaxes to an equilibrium where the flux rope and the arcade develop a fully realistic thermal structure. This paves the way to future simulations for 3D prominence formation.

An overview is given about recent developments and results of comprehensive simulations of magneto-convective processes in the near-surface layers and photosphere of the Sun. Simulations now cover a wide range of phenomena, from whole active regions, over individual sunspots and pores, magnetic flux concentrations and vortices in intergranular lanes, down to the intricate mixed-polarity structure of the magnetic field generated by small-scale dynamo action. The simulations in concert with high-resolution observations have provided breakthroughs in our understanding of the structure and dynamics of the magnetic fields in the solar photosphere.

At a cosmic time when galaxy clusters start showing evidence of a still active galaxy population, the X-ray luminous, massive cluster XMMU J2235-2557 at z=1.39, already hosts massive, quiescent, early-type galaxies on a tight red sequence dominating the cluster core. XMMU J2235-2557 is among the most massive of the very distant clusters, which may explain the evolved status of the system itself, and of its host galaxy populations. It remains a unique laboratory to observe environment-biased galaxy evolution already 9 billion years ago.

A new mechanism is proposed for the formation of filament/core structure by ISRF and clumpy molecular cloud interaction. The derived characterizes of the filament/core network is consistent with that produced by the compressive forcing turbulence model.

Using the Monte Carlo simulations and a set of theoretical galaxy templates, which are built on the Yunnan evolutionary population synthesis models with and without binary interactions, we compare the optical color-color (C-C) relations for passive and star-forming galaxies at redshift z~2.0, and study the effect of binary interactions on this relation. We find that the influence of binary interactions on the C-C relation is insignificant for passive galaxies at z~2.0.

Recent observations and models of solar prominences are reviewed. The observations suggest that prominences are located in or below magnetic flux ropes that lie horizontally above the PIL. However, the details of the magnetic structure are not yet fully understood. Gravity likely plays an important role in shaping the vertical structures observed in quiescent prominences. Preliminary results from a time-dependent model describing the interaction of a magnetic flux rope with photospheric magnetic elements are presented.
