Many multiple planet systems have been found by both radial velocity (RV) and transit surveys, such as the Kepler mission. Period ratio distribution of these planet candidates show that they do not prefer to be in or near Mean Motion Resonance (MMR). Nevertheless, there are small but significant excesses of candidate pairs both spaced slightly exterior to exact resonance, particular near the first order of MMR, such as 2:1 and 3:2. Here, we first review recent observational constraints on these multiple transiting systems and theoretical models, which attempt to understand their period ratio distributions. Then we identify a statistical effect based on an intrinsic asymmetry associated with MMR, and find it play an important role in shaping the period ratio distribution near MMR. Last but least, we also find such an intrinsic asymmetry is existing in asteroids of our solar system.

Magnetism defines the complex and dynamic solar corona. Twists and tangles in coronal magnetic fields build up energy and ultimately erupt, hurling plasma into interplanetary space. These coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are transient riders on the ever-outflowing solar wind, which itself possesses a three-dimensional morphology shaped by the global coronal magnetic field. Coronal magnetism is thus at the heart of any understanding of the origins of space weather at the Earth. However, we have historically been limited by the difficulty of directly measuring the magnetic fields of the corona, and have turned to observations of coronal plasma to trace out magnetic structure. This approach is complicated by the fact that plasma temperatures and densities vary among coronal magnetic structures, so that looking at any one wavelength of light only shows part of the picture. In fact, in some regimes it is the lack of plasma that is a significant indicator of the magnetic field. Such a case is the coronal cavity: a dark, elliptical region in which strong and twisted magnetism dwells. I will elucidate these enigmatic features by presenting observations of coronal cavities in multiple wavelengths and from a variety of observing vantages, including unprecedented coronal magnetic field measurements now being obtained by the Coronal Multichannel Polarimeter (CoMP). These observations demonstrate the presence of twisted magnetic fields within cavities, and also provide clues to how and why cavities ultimately erupt as CMEs.

Antarctica presents a unique environment for the exploration of the interstellar medium. The low column of water vapor opens windows for sub-mm and THz astronomy from ground and sub-orbital observatories while the stable atmosphere holds promise for THz interferometry. Various current and potentially future facilities occupy a niche not available to current space or stratospheric instruments. These allow line and continuum observations addressing key questions in e.g., star formation, galactic evolution, and the life-cycle of interstellar clouds. This review presents scientific questions that can be addressed by the suite of current and future Antarctic observatories.

During the past 20 years, numerous stellar streams have been discovered in both the Milky Way and the Local Group. These streams have been tidally torn from orbiting systems, which suggests that most should roughly trace the orbit of their progenitors around the Galaxy. As a consequence, they play a fundamental role in understanding the formation and evolution of our Galaxy. This project is based on the possibility of applying a technique developed by Binney to various tidal streams and overdensities in the Galaxy. The aim is to develop an efficient method to constrain the Galactic gravitational potential, to determine its mass distribution, and to test distance measurements. Here we apply the technique to the Grillmair & Dionatos GD-1 cold stellar stream. In the unrealistic case of noise-free data, the results show that the technique provides excellent discrimination against incorrect potentials and that it is possible to predict the heliocentric distance very accurately. This changes dramatically when errors are taken into account, which wash out most of the results. Nevertheless, it is still possible to rule out spherical potentials and set constraints on the distance of a given stream.

Recent observations have revealed the existence of a ‘main sequence’ of star-forming galaxies out to high redshift. While the majority of star-forming galaxies are observed to be close to this relation between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass, a smaller subset of the population – so-called ‘starbursts’ – displays specific star-formation rates and star-formation efficiencies that exceed those of normal (main-sequence) galaxies by up to an order of magnitude. A large degree of homogeneity and similarity has been observed for the properties of the population of normal galaxies across a broad redshift range, including a narrow correlation between their CO luminosity (hence gas content) and IR luminosity and an almost invariable IR SED getting warmer with redshift, while starburst galaxies display systematically different properties. This can be used to devise a simple description of the evolution of the star-forming galaxy population since z ~ 2 and, with a higher degree of uncertainty, even further back in time, in a scheme that we dub two star formation mode framework (2-SFM). We show how this can successfully reproduce the shape of the IR luminosity function of galaxies as a function of redshifts, and the IR number counts. Furthermore, we can link the cosmic evolution of the sSFR of main-sequence galaxies to the evolution of the molecular fuel reservoir and to derive estimates of the molecular gas mass functions of star-forming galaxies that are based on their empirically measured gas properties rather than simulations or semi-analytical modelling. We also infer the evolution of the cosmic abundance of molecular gas and briefly discuss its expected observational signature by molecular line emission, the CO luminosity function.

We probe the spatial distribution of the [C ii] μm fine-structure emission and its association with neutral and molecular gas in a 5′.7 × 3′.7 (∼3.3 × 2.1 pc2) region of the M17 SW nebula. Comparison of velocity-resolved [C ii] emission maps with other atomic and molecular tracers is possible for the first time with the dual band receiver GREAT on board the SOFIA airborne telescope. We detected [C ii] emission in a much broader velocity range than the CO-lines (Pérez-Beaupuits et al. 2012). Only [C ii] narrow channel maps at intermediate velocities (between 10 and 24 kms) show correlations with other molecular gas components, supporting a clumpy cloud scenario. At lower (< 10 kms) and higher (>24 kms) velocities instead, we see more than 60% of the region mapped in [C ii] that is not associated with other tracers of star-forming material, the so called “CO-dark” gas. Interaction with winds and outflows lead to substantial excitation of [C ii] emitting gas, so that ablation and shock-interaction have to be taken into account to model the observed [C ii] emission.

The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is a high contrast coronagraph designed to directly image exoplanets and circumstellar disks. GPI includes a polarimetry mode designed to characterize dust grains and enhance the contrast of scattered, polarized light by a factor of 100. Reflections and birefringence of optics within the optical train induce a polarization signature that needs to be measured a priori and calibrated out during data reduction. Here we report on the results of an extensive laboratory characterization campaign of the polarimetry mode. The linear instrumental polarization has been measured in 4 GPI passbands and found to be between 3.5 ± 0.3 % at 1.0 micron and 1.1 ± 0.3 % at 2.0 microns. Modulation efficiency has been measured to be 94% at 1.0 micron increasing to 97% at 2.0 microns. Stability has been shown to better than 0.6% over timescales of ~ 3 months and over cool down cycles. The tests show that GPI passes all polarimetry design requirements and should be able to measure circumstellar disk linear polarization to 1% accuracy.

In this report, we present our recent effort to understand the cyclic behavior of network magnetic elements based on the unique database from full-disk observations provided by Michelson Doppler Imager on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory in the interval including the entire cycle 23. The following results are unclosed. (1) The quiet regions dominate the solar magnetic flux for about 8 years in solar cycle 23, and from the solar minimum to maximum they contribute (0.94-1.44)×1023Mx flux to the solar photosphere. In the entire cycle 23, the magnetic flux of the quiet regions is 1.12 times that of active regions. The occupation ratio of quiet region flux equally characterizes the course of a solar cycle. (2) With the increasing magnetic flux per element, the variations of numbers and total flux of the network elements show three-fold scenario: no-correlation, anti-correlation, and correlation with sunspots, respectively. The anti-correlated elements covering the range of (3-32)×1018Mx occupy 77% of total element number and 37% of quiet Sun flux. (3) The time-latitude distribution of anti-correlated magnetic elements is out of phase with that of sunspots, while the correlated elements display the similar butterfly diagram of sunspots but with wider latitude distribution. These results imply that the correlated elements are the debris of decayed sunspots, and the source of anti-correlated elements is modulated by sunspot magnetic field.

Maser emission plays an important role as a tool in star formation studies. It is widely used for deriving kinematics, as well as the physical conditions of different structures, hidden in the dense environment very close to the young stars, for example associated with the onset of jets and outflows. We will summarize here the recent observational and theoretical progress on this topic since the last maser symposium: the IAU Symposium 242 in Alice Springs.

The Fermi-LAT source 2FGL J2339.6-0532 is likely to host a millisecond pulsar in a ‘black-widow’ system. Strong indications of its nature come from gamma rays and particularly from optical and X-ray observations. However, no pulsations have been found so far neither in radio nor in gamma rays, despite deep searches. I will present here our efforts to find pulsations in Fermi-LAT data. I will describe the uncertainties in the orbital and spin parameters of the source, broadly covered in our search. I will prove the robustness of our technique on other similar systems, and through simulations. I will present the results of our search: the most likely candidates and the further constraints on the parameters of the putative pulsar. Finally, I will discuss the implications of our results and the prospects to find pulsations in this and other similar systems in the future.

Magnetoconvection in a horizontal layer of incompressible fluid is simulated numerically. The initial magnetic field is assumed to be uniform and horizontal. The interaction of quasi-ordered cellular convection with the magnetic field is shown to be able to produce bipolar (and also diverse more complex) configurations of a substantially amplified magnetic field. The operation of this mechanism, which can be regarded as a modification of the mechanism suggested by Tverskoi (1966), is controlled by the very topology of the cellular flow, should be manifest on various spatial scales, and does not require strong initial fields. Magnetic configurations develop both in the central parts of convection cells, where circulatory fluid motion “winds” magnetic field lines, and in the network formed by their peripheral regions due to the “sweeping” of magnetic field lines.

Large-scale Spitzer surveys of the Galactic plane have yielded a new diagnostic for massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) that are actively accreting and driving outflows: extended emission in the IRAC 4.5 μm band, believed to trace shocked molecular gas. Maser studies of these extended 4.5 μm sources (called EGOs, Extended Green Objects, for the common coding of 3-color IRAC images) have been and remain crucial for understanding the nature of EGOs. High detection rates in VLA CH3OH maser surveys provided the first proof that EGOs were indeed MYSOs driving outflows; our recent Nobeyama 45-m survey of northern EGOs shows that the majority are associated with H2O masers. Maser studies of EGOs also provide important constraints for the longstanding goal of a maser evolutionary sequence for MYSOs, particularly in combination with high resolution (sub)mm data. New SMA results show that Class I methanol masers can be excited by both young (hot core) and evolved (ultracompact HII region) sources within the same massive star-forming region.

We have carried out high contrast imaging of 70 young, nearby B and A stars to search for brown dwarf and planetary companions as part of the Gemini NICI Planet-Finding Campaign. Our survey represents the largest, deepest survey for planets around high-mass stars (≈1.5–2.5 M⊙) conducted to date and includes the planet hosts β Pic and Fomalhaut. Despite detecting two new brown dwarfs, our observations did not detect new planets around our target stars, and we present upper limits on the fraction of high-mass stars that can host giant planets that are consistent with our null result.

MAHALO-Subaru (MApping HAlpha and Lines of Oxygen with Subaru) is our on-going large programme which aims to investigate how the star forming activities in galaxies are propagated as a function of time, mass, and environment. We are targeting 10 clusters and proto-clusters at 0.4<z<2.6, and two general fields (GOODS-N and SXDF-CANDELS) with Suprime-Cam and MOIRCS by utilizing our unique sets of narrow-band filters. The narrow-band imaging can map out star forming galaxies with the redshifted Halpha and/or [OII] emission lines from our targets, and thus providing relatively unbiased views of star forming activities across time and environment. We have almost completed narrow-band imaging of our targets, and found that star forming activity is very high even in the proto-cluster cores (z≳1.5), and that the peak of star formation is shifted outwards with time, indicating the inside-out formation of clusters. Moreover, we have identified many “red” emitters especially in high density regions at z>2, which suggests that the mode of star formation and/or the activation of AGN are dependent on environment, and thus holding the key to the environmental effects at the early stage of cluster galaxies formation and evolution.

We have developed a new model for analysing light curves of planetary transits when there are starspots on the stellar disc. Because the parameter space contains a profusion of local minima we developed a new optimisation algorithm which combines the global minimisation power of a genetic algorithm and the Bayesian statistical analysis of the Markov chain. With these tools we modelled three transit light curves of WASP-19. Two light curves were obtained on consecutive nights and contain anomalies which we confirm as being due to the same spot. Using these data we measure the star's rotation period and velocity to be 11.76 ± 0.09 d and 3.88 ± 0.15 kms−1, respectively, at a latitude of 65°. We find that the sky-projected angle between the stellar spin axis and the planetary orbital axis is λ = 1.0° ± 1.2°, indicating axial alignment. Our results are consistent with and more precise than published spectroscopic measurements of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect.

Galactic Cepheids are necessary tools for calibrating the period–luminosity relation, but distances to individual Galactic Cepheids are difficult to measure precisely and their application is limited to a small number of techniques, such as direct parallax measurements, main-sequence fitting to open clusters that host Cepheids, and Baade–Wesselink (BW)-type methods. Here, we re-examine the application of Wesenheit functions in determining distances to more than 300 Galactic Cepheids by taking advantage of the fact that the Wesenheit function is extinction-free by definition. Wesenheit distances are used to calibrate the projection (p) factor for Galactic Cepheids that also have BW distances. Based on ~ 70 Cepheids, we find that the period–p-factor relation may exhibit a nonlinear trend with a considerable scatter. We found discrepant p factors for δ Cephei in the literature. This may be due to inconsistent measurements of its angular diameter using different empirical techniques. We discuss the reason for the inconsistency in angular-diameter measurements and offer a possible remedy.

Radiation of most of the known pulsars is powered by the loss of their rotational energy and angular momentum. Thanks to the Chandra and XMM-Newton observatories, X-ray emission has been detected from over 100 rotation-powered pulsars in the last 12 years. I will overview the current results of X-ray observations of rotation-powered pulsars, including the evolution of the X-ray properties, thermal and magnetospheric components of X-ray emission, and connection between the X-ray emission and emission at other wavelengths.

There are currently no three dimensional numerical models which describe the magnetic and energetic formation of prominences self-consistently. Consequently, there has not been significant progress made in understanding the connection between the dense prominence plasma and the coronal cavity. We have taken an ad-hoc approach to understanding the energetic implications of the magnetic models of prominence structure. We extract one dimensional magnetic field lines from a 3D MHD model of a flux rope and solve for hydrostatic balance along these field lines incorporating field-aligned thermal conduction, uniform heating, and radiative losses. The 1D hydrostatic solutions for density and temperature are then mapped back into three dimensional space, which allows us to consider the projection of multiple structures. We find that the 3D flux rope is composed of several distinct field line types. A majority of the flux rope interior field lines are twisted but not dipped. These field lines are density-reduced relative to unsheared arcade field lines. We suggest the cavity may form along these short interior field lines which are surrounded by a sheath of dipped field lines. This geometric arrangement would create a cavity on top of a prominence, but the two structures would not share field lines or plasma.

The presence of matter with angular momentum, in the form of a fallback disk around a young isolated neutron star will determine its evolution. This leads to an understanding of many properties of different classes of young neutron stars, in particular a natural explanation for the period clustering of AXPs, SGRs and XDINs. The spindown or spinup properties of a neutron star are determined by the dipole component of the magnetic field. The natural possibility that magnetars and other neutron stars may have different strengths of the dipole and higher multipole components of the magnetic field is now actually required by observations on the spindown rates of some magnetars. This talk gives a broad overview and some applications of the fallback disk model to particular neutron stars. Salient points are: (i) A fallback disk has already been observed around the AXP 4U 0142+61 some years ago. (ii) The low observed spindown rate of the SGR 0418+5729 provides direct evidence that the dipole component of the field is in the 1012G range. All properties of the SGR 0418+5729 at its present age can be explained by spindown under torques from a fallback disk. (iii) The anomalous braking index of PSR J1734-3333 can also be explained by the fallback disk model which gives the luminosity, period, period derivative and the period second derivative at the present age. (iv) These and all applications to a variety of other sources employ the same disk physics and evolution, differing only in the initial conditions of the disk.
