We present first imaging results from the PALM-3000 adaptive optics system and PHARO camera on the Hale 5 m telescope. Observations using a vector vortex coronagraph have given us direct detections of the two-ring dusty debris system around the star HD 141569. Our observations reveal the inner clearing in the disk to unprecedentedly small angular separations, and are the most sensitive yet at the H and K bands. We are for the first time able to measure and compare the colors of the scattered light in the inner and outer dust rings, and find that the outer ring is significantly bluer than the inner ring.

We perform the submillimeter/millimeter observations in CO lines toward the southeast of SNR G59.5+0.1 with the KOSMA 3m-Telescope, which fully covers the open cluster NGC 6823. Three molecular clumps are identified in the CO molecular arc, each clump show outflow in motion. The age of the SNR is 8.6×104 yr. The number of selected YSOs are significantly enhanced in the interacting regions, indicating the presence of some recently formed stars.

To investigate the characteristics of large scale and long term evolution of magnetic helicity with solar cycles, we use the method of Local Correlation Tracking (LCT) to estimate the magnetic helicity evolution over the 23rd solar cycle from 1996 to 2009 by using 795 MDI magnetic synoptic charts. The main results are: the hemispheric helicity rule still holds in general, i.e. the large-scale negative (positive) magnetic helicity dominates the northern (southern) hemisphere. However, the large scale magnetic helicity fluxes show the same sign in both hemispheres around 2001 and 2005. The global, large scale magnetic helicity flux over the solar disk changes from negative value at the beginning of the 23rd solar cycle to positive value at the end of the cycle, which also shows the similar trend from the normalized magnetic flux by using the magnetic flux. The net accumulated magnetic helicity is negative in the period between 1996 and 2009.

The Kepler satellite has discovered a number of transiting planets around close binary stars. These circumbinary systems have highly aligned planetary and binary orbits. In this paper, we explore how the mutual inclination between the planetary and binary orbits may reflect the physical conditions of the assembly of protoplanetary discs and the interaction between protostellar binaries and circumbinary discs. Given the turbulent nature of star-forming molecular clouds, it is possible that the infalling gas onto the outer region of a circumbinary disc rotates around a different axis compared to the central protostellar binary. Thus, the newly assembled circumbinary disc can be misaligned with respect to the binary. However, the gravitational torque from the binary produces warp and twist in the disc, and the back-reaction torque tends to align the disc and the binary orbital plane. We present a new, analytic calculation of this alignment torque, and show that the binary-disc inclination angle can be reduced appreciably after the binary accretes a few percent of its mass from the disc. Since mass accretion onto the proto-binary is very likely to occur, our calculation suggests that in the absence of other disturbances, circumbinary discs and planets around close (sub-AU) stellar binaries are highly aligned with the binary orbits, while discs and planets around wide binaries can be misaligned.

To contribute to the understanding of the physical mechanisms at work during the initial phase and early evolution of erupting prominences, we analyze combined observations from ground-based and space-borne instruments. We present two case studies, which occurred at two different phases of the solar cycle, namely on March 2, 2002 and on April 16, 2012. In particular, we show the results of a morphological and kinematical analysis and interpret them in terms of available theoretical models.

The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer has observed Hercules X-1 over a period of about 13 years, allowing detailed measurement of the properties of the dip phenomenon. We construct a model for the dips based on the impact between the accretion stream and the disk, including the geometry and dynamics of the stream and disk. We also consider the case where the stream penetrates the outer parts of the disk, where its density is low, and proceeds to a second impact at smaller radius in the disk. The results from the model are discussed and compared to the observed properties of the dips.

We present a precise and accurate measurement of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud based on late-type eclipsing-binary systems. Our results provide curently the most accurate zero point for the extragalactic distance scale.

Thermal emission during X-ray bursts is a powerful tool to determine neutron star masses and radii, if the Eddington flux and the apparent radius in the cooling tail can be measured accurately, and distances to the sources are known. We propose here an improved method of determining the basic stellar parameters using the data from the cooling phase of long, photospheric radius expansion bursts covering a large range of luminosities. For this purpose, we computed a large set of atmosphere models for burst luminosities varying by two orders of magnitude and for various chemical compositions and surface gravities. We show that the variation of the inverse square root of the apparent blackbody radius with the flux, observed during the photospheric radius expansion bursts from a number of sources at low accretion rate is entirely consistent with the theoretical expectations of the color-correction factor evolution. However, for bursts happening at higher accretion rates the observed evolution is inconsistent with theory, implying that accretion strongly disturbs the neutron star atmosphere. These findings have profound implications for the recent claims on determination of the neutron star radii and masses from such bursts. Our method allows us to determine both the Eddington flux and the ratio of the stellar apparent radius to the distance much more reliably. For 4U 1724-307, we find a lower limit on the neutron star radius of 13 km, independently of the chemical composition. These results suggest that the matter inside neutron stars is characterized by a stiff equation of state.

Solar eruptions are due to a sudden destabilization of force-free coronal magnetic fields. But the detailed mechanisms which can bring the corona towards an eruptive stage, then trigger and drive the eruption, and finally make it explosive, are not fully understood. A large variety of storage-and-release models have been developed and opposed to each other since 40 years. For example, photospheric flux emergence vs. flux cancellation, localized coronal reconnection vs. large-scale ideal instabilities and loss of equilibria, tether-cutting vs. breakout reconnection, and so on. The competition between all these approaches has led to a tremendous drive in developing and testing all these concepts, by coupling state-of-the-art models and observations. Thanks to these developments, it now becomes possible to compare all these models with one another, and to revisit their interpretation in light of their common and their different behaviors. This approach leads me to argue that no more than two distinct physical mechanisms can actually initiate and drive prominence eruptions: the magnetic breakout and the torus instability. In this view, all other processes (including flux emergence, flux cancellation, flare reconnection and long-range couplings) should be considered as various ways that lead to, or that strengthen, one of the aforementioned driving mechanisms.

We take as dynamical model for extrasolar planetary systems a central star like our Sun and two giant planets m1 and m2 like Jupiter and Saturn. We change the mass ratio μ=m2/m1 of the two large planets for a wide range of 1/16 < μ < 16. We also change the ratio between the initial semi-major axes (ν=a2/a1) in the range of 1.2 < ν < 3 to model the different architecture of extrasolar planetary systems hosting two giant planets. The results for possible Trojans (Trojan planets) in the equilateral equilibrium points of the inner planet m1 and the outer planet m2 were derived with the aid of numerical integration. It turned out that in many configurations – depending on the mass ratios μ and the semi-major axes ratio ν – giant planets may host Trojans.

We have tracked the proper motions of ground-state λ7mm SiO maser emission excited by radio Source I in the Orion BN/KL region. Based on dynamical arguments, Source I is believed to be a hard 20 M⊙ binary. The SiO masers trace a linear bipolar outflow (NE-SW) 100 to 1000 AU from the binary. The median 3D velocity is 18 km s−1. An overlying distribution of 1.3 cm H2O masers betrays similar characteristics. The outflow is aligned with the rotation axis of an edge-on disk and wide angle flow known inside 100 AU. Gas dynamics and emission morphology traced by masers around Source I provide dynamical evidence of a magnetocentrifugal disk-wind around this massive YSO, notably a measured gradient in line-of-sight velocity perpendicular to the flow axis, in the same direction as the disk rotation and with comparable speed. The linearity of the flow, despite the high proper motion of Source I and the proximity of dense gas associated with the Orion Hot Core, is also more readily explained for a magnetized flow. The extended arcs of ground-state maser emission bracketing Source I are a striking feature, in particular since dust formation occurs at smaller radii. We propose that the arcs mark two C-type shocks at the transition radius to super-Alfvénic flow.

Physical parameters were derived for 100 young stellar objects in the TAPO region.

Eclipsing binaries are powerful tools for determining the fundamental parameters of stars and, therefore, for measuring accurate, independent distances to nearby galaxies. I present distance measurements that are in progress based on early-type eclipsing binary systems in several Local Group galaxies at a range of metallicities, and discuss the strengths of the method, the limitations and possible sources of systematic error. The goal is to establish several local stepping stones along the extragalactic distance ladder, which will help calibrate the Cepheid period–luminosity relation and thus resolve the ongoing controversy about the distance scale, with its ramifications for cosmology and stellar ages.

We present preliminary results from two parallel programs to search for new substellar companions to nearby, young M-stars and to characterize the atmospheres of known planetary mass and temperature substellar companions. For the M-star survey, we are analyzing high angular resolution archival data on systems within 15pc, complementing a subset with well-determined young ages based on measurements of several age indicators. The results include stellar and substellar companion candidates, which we are currently pursuing with follow-up second epoch images. The characterization component of the project involves using LBT LMIRCam and MMT ARIES direct imaging and spectroscopy data to investigate the atmospheres of known young substellar companions with masses overlapping the planetary regime. These atmospheric studies will represent an analogous comparison to the atmospheres of young imaged planets, and provide a means to fundamentally test evolutionary models, enhancing our understanding of the overall substellar population.

We are deploying a new station for sub-millimeter Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) to obtain shadow images of Supermassive Black Hole (SMBH). Sub-mm VLBI is thought to be the only way so far to get the direct image of SMBH by its shadow, thanks to the superb angular resolution and high transparency against dense plasma around SMBH. At the Summit Station on Greenland, we have started monitoring the opacity at sub-mm region. The Summit Station subtends long baselines with the Atacama Large Milimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile and Submillimeter Array (SMA) in Hawaii. In parallel, we started retrofitting the ALMA North America prototype telescope (renamed as Greenland Telescope: GLT) for the cold environment.

We study the ephemeral regions (ERs) in the quiet Sun observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory, and find that they can be classified into two types: normal ERs (NERs) and self-cancelled ERs (SERs). We identify 2988 ERs among which there are 190 SERs, about 6.4% of the ERs. The total self-cancelled flux is 9.8% of the total ER flux. We suggest that the self-cancellation of SERs is caused by the submergence of magnetic loops connecting the dipolar patches, without magnetic energy release.

Neutron star masses can be inferred from observations of binary pulsar systems, particularly by the measurement of relativistic phenomena within these orbits. The observed distribution of masses can be used to infer or constrain the equation of state for nuclear matter and to study astrophysical processes such as supernovae and binary star evolution. In this talk, I will review our present understanding of the neutron star mass distribution with an emphasis on the observational data.

We suggest that the Be/X-ray binary SXP 1062 and the supergiant fast X-ray transient AX J1841.0-0536 belong to accreting magnetars and anti-magnetars, respectively.

Radio and mm observations play an important role in determining the star formation properties of high redshift galaxies. However, most galaxies at high redshift are too faint to be detected individually at these wavelengths. A way to study this population of galaxies is to use stacking. By averaging the emission of a large number of galaxies detected in optical or near infrared surveys, we can achieve statistical detection.

We investigate methods for stacking data from interferometric surveys. Interferometry poses unique challenges in stacking due to the nature of imaging of this data. We have compared directly stacking the uv data with stacking of the imaged data, the latter being the typically used approach. Using simulated data, we find that uv-stacking may provide around 50% less noise and that image based stacking systematically loses around 10% of the flux.

We review some of the recent progress on modeling planetary and stellar dynamos. Particular attention is given to the dynamo mechanisms and the resulting properties of the field. We present direct numerical simulations using a simple Boussinesq model. These simulations are interpreted using the classical mean-field formalism. We investigate the transition from steady dipolar to multipolar dynamo waves solutions varying different control parameters, and discuss the relevance to stellar magnetic fields. We show that owing to the role of the strong zonal flow, this transition is hysteretic. In the presence of stress-free boundary conditions, the bistability extends over a wide range of parameters.
