The recent discovery of methanol maser emission coming from ring-like distributions has led to the plausible hypothesis that they may be tracing circumstellar disks around forming high mass stars. In this article we discuss the distribution of circumstellar material around such young and massive accreting (proto)stars, and what infrared emission geometries would be expected for different disk/outflow orientations. For four targets we then compare the expected infrared geometries (as inferred from the properties of the maser rings) with actual high spatial resolution near-infrared and mid-infrared images. We find that the observed infrared emission geometries are not consistent with the masers residing in circumstellar disks.

Concordia is a French-Italian permanent station located at Dome C, Antarctica. The station provides accommodation for up to 16 people over winter and more than 70 scientists and technicians during the austral summer. The scientific projects implemented at Concordia are strictly dependent on the characteristics of the site: a) the presence of a 3 300 m thick ice cap that allows access to the planet's climate archives and the reconstruction of glacial-interglacial cycles over more than 800 000 years; b) a particularly stable pure and dry atmosphere ideal for astronomy observations and for research on the chemical composition of the atmosphere; c) a distant location from coastal perturbations favourable to magnetic and seismological observatories to complement a poor world data network in the southern hemisphere; and d) a small totally isolated group of people confined to the station over a long winter, offering an opportunity for a range of medical and psychological studies useful to prepare long duration deep space missions.

We will address the main characteristics of this station and its interest for science.

We investigate the evolution of the Hα equivalent width, EW(Hα), with redshift and its dependence on stellar mass, using the first data from the 3D-HST survey, a large spectroscopic Treasury program with the HST-WFC3. Combining our Hα measurements of 854 galaxies at 0.8<z<1.5 with those of ground based surveys at lower and higher redshift, we can consistently determine the evolution of the EW(Hα) distribution from z=0 to z=2.2. We find that at all masses the characteristic EW(Hα) is decreasing towards the present epoch, and that at each redshift the EW(Hα) is lower for high-mass galaxies. We find EW(Hα) ~ (1+z)1.8 with little mass dependence. Qualitatively, this measurement is a model-independent confirmation of the evolution of star forming galaxies with redshift. A quantitative conversion of EW(Hα) to sSFR (specific star-formation rate) is model dependent, because of differential reddening corrections between the continuum and the Balmer lines. The observed EW(Hα) can be reproduced with the characteristic evolutionary history for galaxies, whose star formation rises with cosmic time to z ~ 2.5 and then decreases to z = 0. This implies that EW(Hα) rises to 400 Å at z = 8. The sSFR evolves faster than EW(Hα), as the mass-to-light ratio also evolves with redshift. We find that the sSFR evolves as (1+z)3.2, nearly independent of mass, consistent with previous reddening insensitive estimates. We confirm previous results that the observed slope of the sSFR-z relation is steeper than the one predicted by models, but models and observations agree in finding little mass dependence.

The presence of additional bodies orbiting a binary star system can be detected by monitoring the binary's eclipse timing. These so-called circumbinary objects will reveal themselves by i) either introducing a reflex motion of the binary system about the total system's barycenter creating a geometric light-travel time effect (LITE), ii) by gravitational perturbations on the binary orbit, or iii) a combination of the two effects resulting in eclipse timing (ETV) and transit timing (TTV) variations. Motivated by the four recently detected circumbinary planets by the Kepler space telescope (Kepler-16b, Kepler-34b, Kepler-35b and Kepler-38b) we have begun to study their dynamics in the presence of an additional massive perturber. In particular we used Kepler-16b as a test bed case. We are aiming to study the detectability of non-transiting and inclined circumbinary planets using the ETV effect along with the fast indicator MEGNO to quantitatively map the chaotic/quasi-periodic regions of the orbital parameter-space and to determine where the orbit of a circumbinary planet will be stable. We have calculated the amplitudes of TTV and ETV signals for different values of the mass and orbital elements of the planet and binary.

Although the first millisecond pulsars (MSPs) were discovered 30 years ago we still do not understand all details of their formation process. Here, we present new results from Tauris, Langer & Kramer (2012) on the recycling scenario leading to radio MSPs with helium or carbon-oxygen white dwarf companions via evolution of low- and intermediate mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs, IMXBs). We discuss the location of the spin-up line in the PṖ–diagram and estimate the amount of accreted mass needed to obtain a given spin period and compare with observations. Finally, we constrain the true ages of observed recycled pulsars via calculated isochrones in the PṖ–diagram.

Circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) have been detected around many Cepheids, first based on long-baseline interferometry, and now also using other observing techniques. These envelopes are particularly interesting for two reasons: their presence could impact the Cepheid distance scale, and they may be valuable tracers of stellar mass loss. Here we focus on their potential impact on the calibration of the Cepheid distance scale. We consider the photometric contribution of the envelopes in the visible, near-, and thermal-infrared domains. We conclude that the impact of CSEs on the apparent luminosities of Cepheids is negligible at visible wavelengths and generally weak (<5%) in the near-infrared (λ ≈ 2 μm). In the thermal-infrared domain (λ ≈ 8 μm), the flux contribution of the CSEs differs depending on the pulsation period: it is relatively weak (<15%) for stars with periods shorter than P ≈ 10 days, but can reach ≈ 30% for long-period Cepheids. We specifically discuss the long-period Galactic Cepheid RS Puppis, which exhibits a very large circumstellar, dusty envelope, and we conclude that this is not a representative case. Overall, the contribution of CSEs to the usual period–luminosity relations (from the visible to the K band) is mostly negligible. They could affect calibrations at longer wavelengths, although the presence of envelopes may have been partially taken into account in the existing empirical calibrations.

We report on a thermonuclear (type-I) X-ray burst that was detected from the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary SAX J1810.8–2609 in 2007 with Swift. This event was longer (≃20 min) and more energetic (a radiated energy of Eb≃6.5×1039 erg) than other X-ray bursts observed from this source. A possible explanation for the peculiar properties is that the X-ray burst occurred during the early stage of the outburst when the neutron star was relatively cold, which allows for the accumulation of a thicker layer of fuel. We also report on a new accretion outburst of SAX J1810.8–2609 that was observed with MAXI and Swift in 2012. The outburst had a duration of ≃17 days and reached a 2–10 keV peak luminosity of ≃ 3 × 1037 (D/5.7 kpc)2 erg s−1. This is a factor >10 more luminous than the two previous outbursts observed from the source, and classifies it as a bright rather than a faint X-ray transient.

Solar filaments are known to exhibit a hemispheric pattern in their chirality, where dextral/sinistral filaments dominate in the northern/southern hemisphere. We show that this pattern may be explained through data driven 3D global magnetic field simulations of the Sun's large-scale magnetic field. Through a detailed comparison with 109 filaments over a 6 month period, the model correctly reproduces the filament chirality and helicity with a 96% agreement. The data driven simulation is extended to run over a full solar cycle, where predictions are made for the spatial and temporal dependence of the hemispheric pattern over the solar cycle.

The distances to old stellar populations have traditionally been derived from three standard candles: the luminosity of the red-giant-branch tip, the absolute magnitudes of RR Lyrae stars, and the colour–magnitude-diagram loci of nearby subdwarfs. The distance-modulus uncertainties that are associated with these methods are still at the level of ±0.10–0.15 mag. Current stellar models are able to satisfy these age-independent constraints to well within their error bars, which are mainly owing to the uncertainties in the distances of the calibrating objects and, directly or indirectly, to chemical-abundance uncertainties. The impact of varying the physics and the assumed abundances in stellar models on the aforementioned standard candles is discussed, as is the use of the giant-branch bump luminosity to constrain the distance scale.

Astronomy in Antarctica is largely carried out in winter, and so winterover scientists are required to run the instruments. A winterover appointment is a unique opportunity for a scientist, but brings challenges for both the scientist and the larger instrument team. We give a brief review of how winterovers work and their experiences. Although recent projects have required less support from winterover scientists, we believe that they will be a feature of Antarctic astronomy and astrophysics into the future.

In recent years our team has performed H2CO(110 − 111) observations towards GMCs and HII regions with the Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory, CAS. Here, we provide a summary of these observations. More than 200 new formaldehyde sources are detected, 8 extended GMC have been mapped, kinetic distances, Galactic structure and a related discussion are provided.

The growing number of detected planets in binary star systems requires methods for a quick assessment of possible habitability of planets in such environments. We offer an analytic method to determine habitability of a terrestrial planet in binary star systems. In this context we give an answer to the most important question: Do the radiative and gravitational perturbations of a secondary influence the extent of the habitable zone (HZ)?

After we have defined the borders of the HZ, we will show the dynamical behaviour of a terrestrial planet in the HZ when adding a Jupiter to the system. In such a system the HZ shows signs of mean motion resonances and secular resonances, depending on the architecture of the planetary system.

Determining an evolutionary clock for high-mass star formation is an important step towards realising a unified theory of star formation, as it will enable qualitative studies of the associated high-mass stars to be executed. We have carried out detailed studies of a large number of sources suspected of undergoing high-mass star formation and have found that common maser transitions offer the best opportunity to determine an evolutionary scheme for these objects. We have investigated the relative evolutionary phases of massive star formation associated with the presence or absence of combinations of water, methanol and main-line hydroxyl masers. The locations of the different maser species have been compared with the positions of 1.2 mm dust clumps, radio continuum, GLIMPSE point sources and Extended Green Objects. Comparison between the characteristics of coincident sources has revealed strong evidence for an evolutionary sequence for the different maser species in high-mass star formation regions. We present our proposed sequence for the presence of the common maser species associated with young high-mass stars and highlight recent advances. We discuss future investigations that will be made in this area by comparing data from the Methanol Multibeam (MMB) Survey with chemical clocks from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz (MALT90) Survey.

Recent infrared observations, particularly from the Spitzer Space Telescope and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, of white dwarfs, cataclysmic variables and other interacting compact binaries, have revealed the presence of dust in many systems. I briefly review the discovery and observational properties of dust around white dwarfs and cataclysmic variables.

We study the magnetic field structure and evolution for 26 X-ray brightening events in coronal holes and quiet Sun regions, including bright points and jets. We found that all brightening events are associated with bipolar regions and caused by magnetic flux emergence followed by cancellation. The emission fluctuations seen in the X-ray bright points are associated with reoccurring magnetic cancellation in the footpoints. An X-ray jet presents similar magnetic behaviour in the footpoints but its magnetic flux cancellation rate is much higher than in the bright point. Comparing coronal holes and the quiet Sun, we do not find differences in their corresponding magnetic field behavior.

Ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (LIR > 1012 L⊙) are locally rare, but appear to dominate the co-moving energy density at higher redshifts (z>2). Many of these are optically-faint, dust-obscured galaxies that have been identified by the detection of their thermal dust emission at sub-mm wavelengths. Multi-wavelength spectroscopic follow-up observations of these sub-mm galaxies (SMGs) have shown that they are massive (Mstellar ~ 1011 M⊙) objects undergoing intense star-formation (SFRs ~ 102−103 M⊙ yr−1) with a mean redshift of z ~ 2, coinciding with the epoch of peak quasar activity. The large fraction of AGNs in SMGs and the derived SMBH masses (M• < 108 M⊙) in these galaxies suggest that the submm phase may play an important role in the rapid growth of SMBHs. When both AGN and star-formation activity are present, long-slit spectroscopic techniques face difficulties in disentangling their contributions and may result in SFR and mass overestimates. We present an integral field view of the Hα emission in a sample of 3 SMGs at z~1.4–2.4 with the IFU instrument OSIRIS on Keck. Designed to be used with Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics, OSIRIS allows a spatial resolution of up to 10× higher than what has been possible in previous seeing-limited studies of the ionized gas in these galaxies. Our main results are the following: (1) We detect multiple galactic-scale sub-components: the compact, broad Hα emission (FWHM >1000 km s−1) likely associated with an AGN, the more extended narrow-line Hα emission (FWHM ≲500 km s−1) of star-forming regions; the latter are dominated by multiple 1–2 kpc sized Hα-bright clumps, each contributing 1-25% of the total clump-integrated Hα emission. (2) We derive clump dynamical masses ~1–10×109M⊙, 1–2 orders of magnitude larger than the kpc-scaled stellar clumps uncovered in optically-selected z ~ 2 star-forming galaxies. (3) We determine high star-formation rate surface densities (ΣSFR~1–50 M⊙yr−1 kpc−2, after extinction correction), similar to local starbursts and luminous infrared galaxies. In contrast to these local environments, SMGs undergo such intense activity on significantly larger spatial scales as revealed by extended Hα emission over 4–16 kpc. (4) We find no evidence of ordered global motion as it would be found in a disk, but rather large velocity offsets (~ few × 100 km s−1) between the distinct stellar clumps. The merger interpretation is likely the most accurate scenario for the SMGs in our sample. However, the final test of whether an underlying disk structure is present will come from studies of the cold gas at the high spatial resolutions possible with ALMA.

In February 2013, the LEECH (LBTI Exozodi Exoplanet Common Hunt) survey began its 100-night campaign from the Large Binocular Telescope atop Mount Graham in Arizona. LEECH neatly complements other high-contrast planet imaging efforts by observing stars in L' band (3.8 microns) as opposed to the shorter wavelength near-infrared bands (1–2.3 microns). This part of the spectrum offers deeper mass sensitivity for intermediate age (several hundred Myr-old) systems, since their Jovian-mass planets radiate predominantly in the mid-infrared. In this proceedings, we present the science goals for LEECH and a preliminary contrast curve from some early data.

Four Class I maser sources were detected at 44, 84, and 95 GHz toward chemically rich outflows in the regions of low-mass star formation NGC 1333I4A, NGC 1333I2A, HH25, and L1157. One more maser was found at 36 GHz toward a similar outflow, NGC 2023. Flux densities of the newly detected masers are no more than 18 Jy, being much lower than those of strong masers in regions of high-mass star formation. The brightness temperatures of the strongest peaks in NGC 1333I4A, HH25, and L1157 at 44 GHz are higher than 2000 K, whereas that of the peak in NGC 1333I2A is only 176 K. However, a rotational diagram analysis showed that the latter source is also a maser. The main properties of the newly detected masers are similar to those of Class I methanol masers in regions of massive star formation. The former masers are likely to be an extension of the latter maser population toward low luminosities of both the masers and the corresponding YSOs.

It is remarkable that the long gamma-ray bursts, as objects connected with the supernovae - i.e. with the end-stages of massive stars, trace the star formation rate. This connection is discussed in this contribution. The presentation is in essence a recapitulation of the article by Mészáros et al. (2006).

Site testing carried out on Ellesmere Island over recent years has shown that mountainous coastal terrain there can provide high clear-sky fractions in the long dark season, with low precipitable water-vapour column and prospects for excellent seeing. This presents new possibilities for time-domain and survey-mode science in the northern hemisphere, allowing uninterrupted high-precision photometry in the optical/near-infrared, but also gains in the submillimetre/millimetre. Efforts underway at the Eureka research station, at 80 degrees latitude, are reviewed. This location provides year-round access to a nearby site being developed as a pathfinder observatory. A program of variable-star and transient searches involving a wide-field imaging system has begun, with some early results. Plans include extrasolar-planet hunting via transit surveys, and future directions are discussed.
