We have measured the annual parallax of the H2O maser associated with an infrared dark cloud, MSXDC G034.43+00.24, with VERA. The parallax is 0.643 ± 0.049 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.56+0.12−0.11 kpc. This value is less than half of the previous kinematic distance of 3.7 kpc. We revised the core-mass estimates of MSXDC G034.43+00.24 from the previous estimations of 1000M⊙ to hundreds of M⊙. The spectral type is still consistent with that of the massive star.

To establish the existence of the galactic bar, ten methanol maser sources around the starting points of the spiral arms were observed with VERA (VLBI Exploration of radio astrometry) using the phase-referencing technique at 6.7 GHz band. For six out of ten sources, absolute proper motions were obtained with better than 3σ accuracy. Using VLBI 3-D data of eight sources, including our five sources, we compared the observed data with three galactic models and found that the model including the bar effect is better to explain the 3-D data, than a flat circular rotation model. A non-flat circular rotation model is also consistent with the VLBI data. Based on a dynamical model with a bar, we estimate an inclination angle of the bar around 35°, which is consistent with previous studies.

Asymmetries in exoplanet transits are proving to be a useful tool for furthering our understanding of magnetic activity on both stars and planets outside our Solar System. Near-UV observations of the WASP- 12 system have revealed asymmetries in the timing of the transit when compared with the optical light curve. In this paper we review a number of reported asymmetries and present work simulating near-UV transits for the hot-Jupiter hosting star HD 189733.

The global magnetic field of the Sun is the determining parameter of spreading the solar wind in the interplanetary space. The global field changes the polarity synchronically with the cycle of solar activity. The interesting indicator of the polarity change are the occurence so-called polar belts of the prominences. The article shows the performance of these belts on observational work from 1975 to 2009. A coordinated effort is suggested for the compilation of data from different observers following the method described by Rušin et al., 1988.

The multi-wavelength pulsed emission from young pulsars and millisecond pulsars can be well modeled with the single-pole 3-dimension annular gap and core gap model. To distinguish our single magnetic pole model from two-pole models (e.g. outer gap model and two-pole caustic model), the convincing values of the magnetic inclination angle and the viewing angle will play a key role.

Some abnormal AGNs are discovered in the SDSS data recently. The usual UV/optical emission lines are exceptionally weak in their UV/optical spectroscopy, though the shapes and luminosities of their continua are comparable with that of the normal AGNs. We investigated the optical variations and the near-infrared spectra of these weak emission-line AGNs. We propose that these AGNs can be interpreted as the early stage of an active cycle of AGNs.

SHARDS (Survey for High-z Absorption Red & Dead Sources; see Pérez-González et al. 2012) is an optical ultra-deep spectro-photometric survey with OSIRIS-GTC aimed at selecting and studying massive passively evolving galaxies at z=1.0–2.3 in GOODS-North. Nonetheless, the data quality allow a plethora of studies on galaxy populations, including Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs) about which we have started our first science verification project. The selection procedure, measurement and first analysis of ELGs in SHARDS, demonstrate the huge capability of the survey in providing physical information for a large sample of emitters, spanning from local Hα to high-z Lyman-α emitters.

Since the discovery of the first exoplanet in 1989, though over 850 candidates have been verified (Schneider 2012), few are similar to our Earth in terms of mass and size. Hence here we would like to propose the revival and improvement of optical intensity interferometry to achieve sub-milliarcsecond resolution, which promises also to be less sensitive to weather conditions, light pollution and optomechanical alignments, yet only requiring baselines <100m.

The Chinese Spectral Radioheliograph (CSRH) is under construction in Mingantu station of NAOC in China. Now, CSRH-I which includes antenna, receiver and correlator in decimetric wave range has been established. This paper introduced calibration on CSRH and present some results of data processing.

Enormous progress is being made in developing observational facilities. As a result, there are new opportunities to observe structures at sub-mas resolution. To explore gravitationally lensed systems, we simulate radio-lobe images distorted by microlensing. We show that the positions of ‘holes’ in lensed images may indicate the positions of microlens groups or overdensities.

We propose a mechanism that contributes energy and particles to the diffuse x-ray halos of galaxies and clusters, based on the dark quantum states of large-scale gravity wells.

We investigate the properties of the galaxies hosting quasars in ~400 low redshift (z < 0.5) SDSS QSO that are in the “Stripe 82” sky area. For this region deep (r ~ 22.4 mag) u, b, v, r and i images are available and allow us to study both the host galaxies and the Mpc scale environments. This sample outnumbers previous studies of low-z QSOs. We present preliminary results of the properties of quasars activity and in particular we focus on the relationships among host galaxy luminosity, black hole mass, radio emission and the surrounding galaxy environments. We select from the SDSS - QSO Catalogue all the QSOs in the range of redshift 0.1<z<0.5 and in the Stripe82 region. This gives a total of 416 QSO. In this sample we are dominated by radio quiet quasars (about 5% are radio loud). In Fig. 1 we report the distribution of QSO in the plane redshift-MR (H0 = 70). The mean redshift of the sample is <z> = 0.39 and the average absolute magnitude is: <Mi> = −22.68. We implemented an automated procedure using AIDA (Uslenghi & Falomo 2011) to decompose the QSO images into nucleus and host galaxy luminosity. After masking of all contaminating sources in the field a 2D fitting is performed using PSF + galaxy model. In Fig. 1 we show an example of a QSO image in the sample and the distribution of the host galaxy absolute magnitude of the resolved objects.

In this paper, we investigated the possible exponential decays in the long term optical light curve of the BL Lac {OJ 287}. We developed a method that can be used to decomposing a light curve into a linear combination of exponential decays. The decomposing shows that the decay time scales range from ~ 103.6 to ~ 10−4 days. The power spectra has frequency-dependent power-law with slop ~ 0.5, and the peak of power is at the time scale of decay on ~ 160 days.

Red-clump (RC) giants are intermediate-age, core-helium-burning stars. The RC can be used as a standard candle. In particular, the small variance of the RC's K-band intrinsic luminosity and its weak dependence on chemical composition and age make it an extremely useful distance indicator. In this paper, we use 2mass data to search for RC stars in a sample of 60 Galactic open clusters with known reddening, ages, and distances, and obtain an average value for the RC's absolute Ks-band magnitude, MKs = −1.72 ± 0.17 mag.

We present analysis of transit spectroscopy of three extrasolar planets, WASP-12 b, WASP-17 b, and WASP-19 b, using the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Measurement of molecular absorption in the atmospheres of these planets offers the chance to explore several outstanding questions regarding the atmospheric structure and composition of these highly irradiated, Jupiter-mass objects. We analyze the data for a single transit for each planet, using a strategy similar in certain aspects to the techniques used by Berta (2012), and achieve almost photon-limited results for individual spectral bins. Our final transit spectra are consistent with the presence of a broad absorption feature at 1.4 μm most likely due to water, but the amplitude of the absorption is less than expected based on previous observations with Spitzer, possibly due to hazes absorbing in the NIR. However, the degeneracy of models with different compositions and temperature structures combined with the low amplitude of any features in the data preclude our ability to place unambiguous constraints on the atmospheric composition without a comprehensive multi-wavelength analysis.

The total mass of several quiescent prominences observed in EUV by the AIA instrument on board SDO, in soft X-rays by XRT on Hinode and in Hα and CaII H by the SLS and HSFA spectrographs of the Ondřejov observatory, was estimated. Values of asymmetry of coronal emissivity obtained during the mass computations are compared with those estimated from 193 Å intensities measured at the disk edge and just above the limb.

The design of five-element digital receiver system is decribed. At first, we analyzed the process of data processing in the receiver system. Then we wrote programs to implement the FIR parallel filter and showed its simulation results. Finally the testing result of the correlation receiver system is demonstrated.

We aim to reveal the mass distribution of the Galaxy based on a precise rotation curve constructed using VERA observations. We have been observing Galactic H2O masers with VERA. We here report one of the results of VERA for IRAS 05168+3634. The parallax is 0.532 ± 0.053 mas which corresponds to a distance of 1.88+0.21−0.17 kpc, and the proper motions are (μαcosδ, μδ) = (0.23 ± 1.07, −3.14 ± 0.28) mas yr−1. The distance is significantly smaller than the previous distance estimate of 6 kpc based on a kinematic distance. This drastic change places the source in the Perseus arm rather than in the Outer arm. Combination of the distance and the proper motions with the systemic velocity provides a rotation velocity of 227+9−11 km s−1 at the source assuming Θ0 = 240 km s−1. The result is marginally slower than the rotation velocity at LSR with ~ 1−σ significance, but consistent with previous VLBI results for six sources in the Perseus arm. We also show the averaged disk peculiar motion over the seven sources in the Perseus arm as (Umean, Vmean) = (11 ± 3, −17 ± 3) km s−1. It suggests that the seven sources in the Perseus arm are systematically moving toward the Galactic center, and lag behind the Galactic rotation with more than 3-σ significance.

This paper presents a summary of the HSTEP project: an effort to calculate the physical properties of the known transiting extrasolar planets using a homogeneous approach. I discuss the motivation for the project, list the 83 planets which have already been studied, run through some important aspects of the methodology, and finish with a synopsis of the results.

GRBs are the most luminous events in the Universe. They are detectable from local to high-z universe and may serve as probes for high-z galaxies (e.g., Savaglio et al. 2009; Kewley & Dopita 2002). We compile the observations for 61 GRB host galaxies from literature. Their redshifts range from 0.0085 to 6.295. We present the statistical properties of the GRB host galaxies, including the stellar mass (M*), star-forming rate (SFR), metallicity (Z), extinction (AV), and neutral hydrogen column density (NH). We explore possible correlations among the properties of gamma-ray burst host galaxies and their cosmic evolution with observations of 61 GRB host galaxies. Our results are shown in Figure 1. A clear Z-M* relation is found in our sample, which is Z ~ M0.4. The host galaxies of local GRBs with detection of accompanied supernovae also share the same relation with high-z GRB host galaxies. A trend that a more massive host galaxy tends to have a higher star-formation rate is found. The best linear fit gives a tentative relation, i.e, SFR ~ M0.75. No any correlation is found between AV and NH. A GRB host galaxy at a higher redshift also tends to have a higher SFR. Even in the same redshift, the SFR may vary over three orders of magnitude. The metallicity of the GRB host galaxies is statistically higher than that of the QSO DLAs. The full version of our results please refer to Chen et al. (2012).
