We present detections of spatially resolved CO(J = 2→1) and CO(J = 3→2) emission, respectively, from the lensed submillimeter (submm) galaxies (SMGs), ID 9 (z = 1.577) and ID 17b (z = 2.308), found in the Science Demonstration Phase (SDP) of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS, www.h-atlas.org). The detections were obtained using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA, www.mmarray.org) and confirm redshifts of the lensed galaxies. We exploit the CARMA data together with existing high-J observations, to determine, among other physical properties of the lensed SMGs, the CO line luminosities, brightness temperature ratios, gas masses, and spatial sizes.

Merging, resulting from galaxy interaction and collision, is one essential scenario to interpret the distinct evolutionary stages of galaxy formation. However AGNs are believed to play an essential role towards the final stages of this scenario, in particular to clear the galaxy from a large excess of dust. Selecting galaxies with both 70μm and X-ray detection will help to understand the relation between star formation and AGN. We are taking advantage of the extensive multi-wavelength coverage of the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field to dissect the AGN influence on infrared luminous objects. We demonstrate that enhanced star formation is more probably responsible for additional obscuration of the central AGN than the dust torus, in agreement with current galaxy formation theory. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the presence of an AGN does not increase the galaxy dust temperature significantly.

Assuming that the timescale of the magnetic field decay is approximately equal to that of the stellar cooling via neutrino emission, we obtain a one-to-one relationship between the effective surface thermal temperature and the inner temperature. The ratio of the effective neutrino luminosity to the effective X-ray luminosity decreases with decaying magnetic field.

Early design studies for the future Exo-Planet Imaging Camera and Specrotgraph (EPICS) on the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) show the ability to probe the region of super-Earths in the habitable zone of stars within 5pc (including Gilese 581d). However, these planets will be lost to us if the correct choice of integral field spectrograph (IFS) technology is not selected for such an instrument the ability to fit and remove the speckle noise that remains is crucial to reaching these contrasts.

We conclusively demonstrate, though the use of an experimental setup producing an artificial speckle, that slicer based IFSs and post-processing using spectral deconvolution can achieve speckle rejection factors exceeding 103. Contrary to popular belief, we do not find any evidence that this choice of IFS technology limits the achievable contrast. Coupled with extreme adaptive optics and high performance coronographs, a slicer based integral field spectrograph could achieve contrasts exceeding 109, enabling these super-Earths to be detected in the habitable zone of nearby stars, making it an attractive option for the next generation of instruments being designed for the direct detection of extra solar planets.

The final episode in the history of black hole accretion and galaxy formation takes place in our cosmic backyard, the local universe. Within this volume must also reside the — until now unknown — sources of observed ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). A thorough study of the local universe requires full-sky coverage to obtain a sizable sample and map the matter anisotropy. We recently constructed the first catalog of radio-emitting galaxies that meets this requirement. The sample contains all radio galaxies similar to Centaurus~A out to ~100 Mpc. Only 3% of the hosts of the powerful radio jets are classified as Spiral galaxies, while for non-radio galaxies of similar mass, this fraction is 34%. The energy injected by radio jets per unit volume indicates that Cen A-like radio galaxies have in principle sufficient power to accelerate cosmic rays to ultra-high energies. A significantly enhanced clustering of radio-loud galaxies compared to normal galaxies of the same luminosity is observed. This indicates a causal relation between galaxy environment and jet power, independent of black hole mass.

The mass of erupting prominence material can be inferred from the obscuration of emission behind this mass of cool plasma thanks to the rapid cadence of SDO/AIA images in the short EUV wavelength range (Carlyle et al. 2013, these proceedings). In comparing this approach with spectral observations from Hinode/EIS, to monitor contributions from emission seen around the erupting prominence material, we have found an intriguing component of blue-shifted emission, trailing the erupting prominence, with Doppler shifts on the order of 350 km s−1 in bright lines of both He ii and Fe xii.

We present astrometric results of phase-referencing VLBI observations of 22 GHz H2O maser and 43 GHz SiO maser emission towards the red hypergiant NML Cyg using VLBA. We obtained an annual parallax of 0.62 ± 0.04 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.61+0.13−0.11 kpc. With a VLA observation in its largest (A) configuration at 43 GHz, we barely resolve the radio photosphere of NML Cyg, and find a uniform-disk diameter of 44 ± 16 mas.

The First Byurakan Survey (FBS) was conducted by Markarian et al. (1989) to reveal UV-excess galaxies. However, many other interesting objects were possible to detect based on its low-dispersion spectra, and the Second part of the FBS (Mickaelian 2008) was carried out later to reveal UV-excess stellar (point-like) objects, such as white dwarfs (WD), hot subdwarfs, cataclysmic variables (CV), HBB stars, as well as QSOs and Seyfert galaxies. In addition, the FBS plates were digitized (DFBS, Digitized First Byurakan Survey; Mickaelian et al. 2007) and the extraction and reduction of spectra allowed selection of objects with higher confidence and to fainter magnitudes.

Spectroscopic observations have been carried out with three telescopes (Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory BAO-2.6m, Russian Special Astrophysical Observatory SAO-6m and Observatoire de Haute Provence OHP-1.93m) (Sinamyan & Mickaelian 2009) for classification of objects. The spectral features of CVs are narrow emission lines (Balmer series, HeI and HeII lines and Bowen band at 4640A) (Fig. 1). In addition, we use the NSVS database (Wozniak et al. 2004) for revealing variability and our method of comparison of POSS1 and POSS2 epoch photometric data (Mickaelian et al. 2011) based on accurate calculations of weighted average POSS1 and POSS2 magnitudes. 27 objects are present in the NSVS and light curves are available (Fig 2.). X-ray data may serve as an additional criterion to detect CVs among the FBS blue stellar objects (Voges et al. 1999; 2000).

The subsample of FBS WDs has already been published (Sinamyan & Mickaelian 2011), where some CVs are also present. The subsample of FBS CVs consists of 38 objects, including the following types: dwarf novae (DN; UG and SU subtypes; 7 objects), nova-like variables (NL; SH, AC, VY subtypes; 11 objects), as well as there is a DQ Her type object (FBS 1140+719), a Helium CV (HeCV; FBS 1232+379), and a Low-mass X-ray Binary (LMXB; FBS 1656+354). Other objects do not have accurate classification because of the lack of photometric data. The Periods are in the range of 0.012 to 0.343 days.

To make a complete study of these objects possible, multiwavelength (MW) data were retrieved for these 38 objects, including X-ray (ROSAT BSC and FSC), UV (GALEX), optical (APM, MAPS, USNO-B1.0, GSC 2.3.2, SDSS), and IR (2MASS, WISE, IRAS, AKARI) and MW SEDs were built. For CVs, MW SEDs have some disadvantage as their variability does not allow to have their accurate energy distribution. Diagrams with relations between MW data-points and some other physical parameters were also built.

To capture the fine structure of the flare kernel during it's explosive phase, we design a real time flare onset detecting algorithm named Near Saturation Area Threshold(NSAT), And an automatic CCD parameters control algorithm for the observing software. All the data from CCD, 48f/s, could be saved to the hard disk, and the GPS time of the flare onset also be saved in the log. These methods could avoid the data overflow and grab the fine structure data of the flare kernel. The simulation experiment works well and the software will be put into use in Huairou Solar Observatory soon.

Spectroscopic observations of transiting exoplanets have provided the first indications of their atmospheric structure and composition. Optimal estimation retrievals have been successfully applied to solar system planets to determine the temperature, composition and aerosol properties of their atmospheres, and have recently been applied to exoplanets. We show the effectiveness of the technique when combined with simulated observations from the proposed space telescope EChO, and also discuss the difficulty of constraining a complex system with sparse data and large uncertainties, using the super-Earth GJ 1214b as an example.

We review properties of all known collisionally pumped (class I) methanol maser series based on observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Mopra radio telescope. Masers at 36, 84, 44 and 95 GHz are most widespread, while 9.9, 25, 23.4 and 104 GHz masers are much rarer, tracing the most energetic shocks. A survey of many southern masers at 36 and 44 GHz suggests that these two transitions are highly complementary. The 23.4 GHz maser is a new type of rare class I methanol maser, detected only in two high-mass star-forming regions, G357.97-0.16 and G343.12-0.06, and showing a behaviour similar to 9.9, 25 and 104 GHz masers. Interferometric positions suggest that shocks responsible for class I masers could arise from a range of phenomena, not merely an outflow scenario. For example, some masers might be caused by interaction of an expanding Hii region with its surrounding molecular cloud. This has implications for evolutionary sequences incorporating class I methanol masers if they appear more than once during the evolution of the star-forming region. We also make predictions for candidate maser transitions in the ALMA frequency range.

Exploring potential links between the internal physical processes of galaxies with respect to their external morphologies can reveal connections between past and present populations. One primary physical driver of galaxy evolution is star formation, which is directly detected from UV emission. Here, we summarize a study investigating the optical and UV morphologies of rest-frame UV-detected star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts (0.1<z<1.2) observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Solar Blind Channel (far-UV) and Wide Field PlanetaryCamera 2 (WFPC2; U-band) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey fields.

We present radial-velocity measurements (RV) obtained in one of the numbers of programs underway to search for extrasolar planets with the spectrograph SOPHIE at the 1.93-m telescope of the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. Targets were selected from catalogs observed with ELODIE, which had been mounted previously at the telescope, in order to detect long-period planets with an extended database close to 15 years.

We performed the observation of the flux densities of Sgr A* at 90 and 102 GHz on 6 April 2005 using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array in order to detect the time lag between these frequencies. We constructed light curves covering a few hour with 1 min bin, and the Intra-Day Variability, which had a rising phase and intensity peak, of Sgr A* is clearly seen at both frequencies. We calculated the z-transformed discrete correlation function between the light curves of Sgr A* at 90 and 102 GHz. The derived time lag of the flares at these frequencies was approximately zero, contrary to our expectations based on the previously reported time lag at lower frequencies. If the radio flares of Sgr A* are explained by the expanding plasma model, the light curve at 90 GHz would be delayed with respect to the one at 102 GHz. However, we could not find such a delay with statistical significance in our data.

This paper describes an MHD simulation of an observed Sigmoid in AR 11283 from its formation to eruption. The Non-linear Force Free MHD model (Jiang and Feng, 2012) and the data-driven active region evolution model (Wu et al., 2006; Jiang et al. 2013) together with the SDO/HMI magnetograms are used. We show the successful simulation results of the eruption of a flux-rope structure.

Modelling stellar populations in galaxies is a key approach to gain knowledge on the still elusive process of galaxy formation as a function of cosmic time. In this review, after a summary of the state-of-art, I discuss three aspects of the modelling, that are particularly relevant to massive galaxies, the focus of this symposium, at low and high-redshift. These are the treatment of the Thermally-Pulsating Asymptotic Giant Branch phase, evidences of an unusual Initial Mass Function, and the effect of modern stellar libraries on the model spectral energy distribution.

Magnetic helicity is a physical quantity that describes field topology. It is also a conserved quantity as Berger in 1984 demonstrated that the total magnetic helicity is still conserved in the corona even when there is a fast magnetic reconnection. It is generally believed that solar magnetic fields, together with their helicity, are created in the convection zone by various dynamo processes. These fields and helicity are transported into the corona through solar photosphere and finally released into the interplanetary space via various processes such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar winds. Here I will give a brief review on our recent works, first on helicity observations on the photosphere and how to understand these observations via dynamo models. Mostly, I will talk about what are the possible consequences of magnetic helicity accumulation in the corona, namely, the formation of magnetic flux ropes, CMEs taking place as an unavoidable product of coronal evolution, and flux emergences as a trigger of CMEs. Finally, I will address on in what a form magnetic field in the interplanetary space would accommodate a large amount of magnetic helicity that solar dynamo processes have been continuously producing.

We present a radiative-convective equilibrium model for young giant exoplanets. Model predictions are compared with the existing photometric measurements of the planet β Pictoris b in the J, H, Ks, L', NB 4.05, M' bands. This model will be used to interpret future photometric and spectroscopic observations of exoplanets with SPHERE, mounted at the VLT with a first light expected mid-2014.

We describe the first X-ray observations of binary millisecond pulsars PSR J0023+0923, J1810+1744, J2215+5135, and J2256−1024. All are Fermi gamma-ray sources and three are ‘black-widow’ pulsars, with companions of mass < 0.1 M⊙. Data were taken using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory and covered a full binary orbit for each pulsar. PSRs J2215+5135 and J2256−1024, show significant orbital variability and X-ray flux minima coinciding with eclipses seen at radio wavelengths. This is consistent with intrabinary shock emission characteristic of black-widow pulsars. The other two pulsars, PSRs J0023+0923 and J1810+1744, do not demonstrate significant variability, but are fainter than the other two sources. Spectral fits yield power-law indices that range from 1.4 to 2.3 and blackbody temperatures in the hundreds of eV. The spectrum for PSR J2215+5135 shows a significant hard X-ray component (41% of counts are above 2 keV), which is additional evidence for the presence of intrabinary shock emission.
