We have used our dataset on the abundances of planetary nebulae (PN) to study the chemical evolution of the Galactic bulge. We have derived several relations involving the chemical abundances and computed three classes of models for the Galactic bulge: (i) one-zone, single-infall models, (ii) one-zone, double-infall models and (iii) multizone, double infall models. We conclude that part of the observational data can be understood in terms of the simpler models, but the full understanding of all observational constraints can only be explained by more complex multizone models.

Accurately modeling the evolution of a star cluster in a strong tidal field poses unique computational challenges. We present a hybrid code that combines the strengths of two different approaches to computing gravitational forces. The internal, collisional, dynamics of the cluster is followed with a direct N-body integrator, Kira, while the galactic tidal field is modeled with a cosmological code, GADGET, that uses a Barnes-Hut tree to evaluate gravitational forces in O(N log N) time. The quadrupole moment at the center of mass of the cluster is used to compute the external potential and provides a mechanism for mass loss. This forms a robust, bidirectional interaction. The advantages of combining two highly-developed and well-established software packages at such high level are obvious and many; not the least of the these is the ability to include other physical processes, e.g., stellar evolution. One problem to which we applied this technique is the evolution of a dense star cluster near the Galactic Center. We are also using this code to explore the effects of the strong time variation in the tidal field of merging galaxies on the evolution of young star clusters forming during the merger.

We present sixth- and eighth-order Hermite integrators for astrophysical N-body simulations, which use the derivatives of accelerations up to second order (snap) and third order (crackle). These schemes do not require previous values for the corrector, and require only one previous value to construct the predictor. Thus, they are fairly easy to be implemented. The additional cost of the calculation of the higher order derivatives is not very high. Even for the eighth-order scheme, the number of floating-point operations for force calculation is only about two times larger than that for traditional fourth-order Hermite scheme. The sixth order scheme is better than the traditional fourth order scheme for most cases. When the required accuracy is very high, the eighth-order one is the best.

So far, few direct sub-arcsecond resolution studies exist of the dense material that, according to the standard unified scheme, should obscure the central engines of radio galaxies. In the following, observations are presented that highlight the nuclear environment of the prototypical X-shaped FR II galaxy 3C 403. To date, it is the only powerful radio galaxy known to host a water megamaser.

The ICRF derived from VLBI observations of extragalactic radio sources up to 1995.6 and effective since 1998.0 was a radical change from the FK5 stellar/equinox celestial system. Since then the number of geodetic/astrometric VLBI observations has tripled and the number of radio sources with astrometrically useful data has quadrupled. These data along with advances in modeling and estimation will be used to generate the next ICRF realization in the microwave band. Analysis of source position time series and source structure evolution will be used to select better “defining” sources. Working groups have been established by the IAU, IERS and IVS with the goal of presenting the second realization of the ICRF at the IAU General Assembly in 2009.

Basing on recent microlensing observations, we analyse the mass spectrum of the Galactic bulge stellar population and study the slope of the initial mass function.

We present a new stellar evolution code and a set of results, showing its capability to calculate full evolutionary tracks for a wide range of masses and metalicities. The code is meant to be used also in the context of modeling the evolution of dense stellar systems, for performing live evolutionary calculations both for ‘normal’ ZAMS/PRE-MS models, but mainly for ‘non-canonical’ (i.e. merger-products) stellar configurations. For such tasks, it has to be robust and efficient, capable to run through all phases of stellar evolution without interruption or intervention. Here we show a few examples of evolutionary calculations for stellar populations I and II, and for masses in the range 0.25–64 M⊙.

We study the maser emission arising from a thin, planar, gaseous ring in Keplerian rotation around a central mass when it is observed edge-on. Assuming that the absorption coefficient within the amplifying ring is a decreasing function of distance from the central mass (i.e., κ = κ0r−q), we calculated position-velocity (PV) diagrams for the most intense maser features using different values of the exponent q. We found that, depending on the value of q, these diagrams can be qualitatively different.

We explore the elemental abundance features of metal-rich disk stars, highlighting the comparisons made with those of the recently revealed Galactic bulge stars. A similarity between two of the comparisons leads to a new theoretical picture of the bulge-disk connection in the Galaxy, where a supermassive black hole resides at the center. We postulate that a metal-rich outflow, triggered by feedback from a black hole, was generated and quenched the star formation, which had lasted several billion years in the bulge. The expelled gas cooled down in the Galactic halo without escaping from the gravitational potential of the Galaxy. The gas gradually started to accrete to the disk around five billion years ago, corresponding to the time of sun's birth, and replaced a low-metallicity halo gas that had been accreting over nearly ten billion years. The metal-rich infalling gas, whose elemental abundance reflects that of metal-rich bulge stars, mixed with the interstellar gas already present in the disk. Stars formed from the mixture compose the metal-rich stellar disk.

The intrinsic radio structure of the extragalactic sources is one of the limiting factors in defining the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF). This paper reports about the ongoing work to monitor the structural evolution of the ICRF sources by using the Very Long Baseline Array and other VLBI telescopes around the world. Based on more than 5000 VLBI images produced from such observations, we have assessed the astrometric suitability of 80% of the ICRF sources. The number of VLBI images for a given source varies from 1 for the least-observed sources to more than 20 for the intensively-observed sources. Overall, we identify a subset of 194 sources that are highly compact at any of the available epochs and which are prime candidates for the realization of the next ICRF with the highest accuracy.

We observed the H2O maser at the nucleus of the Seyfert 2, IC 2560, using the VLBA and the phased VLA. The systemic, red-shifted and blue-shifted maser features and a continuum component have been detected. We propose a maser disk in the nuclear region. The systemic and red-shifted features are emitted from a nearly edge-on disk with the position angle of PA = −47°. The thickness is 2H < 0.025 pc. The binding mass is 3.5 × 106M⊙. Assuming the Keplerian rotation, the radii at the disk are r = 0.087-0.335 pc and the rotation velocities are 213–418 km s−1. The mean density within the inner radius is 1.3 × 109M⊙ pc−3, suggesting a massive black hole at the center. A continuum component is considered as a jet ejected from the nucleus, with an angle of 70° from the disk. The blue-shifted maser feature is located on the continuum component, being interpreted to be a ‘jet maser’.

Accurate alignment of the radio and optical celestial reference frames requires detailed understanding of physical factors that may cause offsets between the positions of the same object measured in different spectral bands. Opacity in compact extragalactic jets (due to synchrotron self-absorption and external free-free absorption) is one of the key physical phenomena producing such an offset, and this effect is well-known in radio astronomy (“core shift”). We have measured the core shifts in a sample of 29 bright compact extragalactic radio sources observed by Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at 2.3 and 8.6 GHz. We report the results of these measurements and estimate that the average shift between radio and optical positions of distant quasars could be of the order of 0.1--0.2 mas. This shift exceeds the expected positional accuracy of Gaia and SIM. We suggest two possible approaches to carefully investigate and correct for this effect in order to align accurately the radio and optical positions. Both approaches involve determining a Primary Reference Sample of objects to be used for tying the radio and optical reference frames together.

We present a study of the structure of the Galactic Bulge in the region −6° < b < 3°,−17° < l < 17° using 2MASS archive data. More than 100 fields are used. We make use of the red clump method to derive the distance of the Bulge in the studied regions. We derive a position angle of the Galactic Bulge going from 42° ± 11 to 35° ± 10 depending on the adopted bulge mass distribution.

We report on the first global high-precision (differential phase-delay) astrometric analyses performed on a complete set of radio sources. We have observed the S5 polar cap sample, consisting of 13 quasars and BL Lac objects, with the VLBA at 8.4, 15, and 43 GHz. We have developed new algorithms to enable the use of the differential phase-delay observable in global astrometric observations. From our global analyses, we determine the relative positions between all pairs of sources with typical precisions ranging from 10 to 200 μas, depending on observing frequency and source separation. In this paper, we discuss the impact of this observable in the enhancement of the astrometric precision. Since a large fraction of the S5 polar cap sources are ICRF defining sources, this may result in a test of the ICRF stability. Our multi-epoch/multi-frequency approach will also provide both absolute kinematics and spectral information of all sources in the sample. In turn, this will provide an important check on key predictions of the standard jet interaction model.

Three new and still on-going surveys that combine the power of spectroscopy or adaptive optics from the Keck Telescopes with HST images are DEEP, AEGIS, and CATS. The advantages of each for the study of distant bulges are accompanied by a few highlights. We find that the vast fraction of luminous distant bulges appear very red, independent of the bulge luminosity, bulge fraction, disk color, and environment. Yet early-type galaxies appear to be relatively young at redshifts z ~ 1, are less numerous then, host many X-ray AGN's with some that are highly obscured, and have low but increasing dry-dry and dry-wet merger rates over time.

Recently, with the development of sensitive maser receiver and wide-band spectrometer, maser emission were detected toward more and more galaxies. 69 galaxies beyond the Magellanic Clouds has been reported with H2O maser emission (to 2006.12). The statistical properties of the sample of extragalactic H2O masers are not well explored. Here we collect observation data of all these detected extragalactic H2O maser sources and give a statistical analysis to investigate the statistical properties of the sample.

Masers in starburst galaxies are outstanding probes of a range of phenomena related to galaxy and black hole evolution, and offer unique high brightness temperature illumination that can be used to probe small scales in the host galaxy and in our own. But we require a deeper understanding of the galaxy-scale maser phenomenon if we wish to employ starburst galaxy masers as probes using the next generation of radio telescopes. This review summarizes what is known about the different flavors of masers in starburst galaxies and the setting and structure of OH megamasers. The question of which galaxies produce megamasers and which do not is critical to our understanding of the megamaser phenomenon, and recent studies of HCN and H2CO are particularly instructive. Constraints on the lifetime of OH megamasers and the predictability of OH megamaser line properties are critical issues to address in the near future. It is also time to begin the next wave of OH megamaser surveys at higher redshifts and to finally employ them as probes of starbursts, massive black holes, galaxy evolution, and intervening media.

Early-type galaxies, considered as large bulges, have been found to have had a much-more-than-boring star formation history in recent years by the UV satellite GALEX. The most massive bulges, brightest cluster galaxies, appear to be relatively free of young stars. But smaller bulges, normal ellipticals and lenticulars, often show unambiguous sign of recent star formation in their UV flux. The fraction of such UV-bright bulges in the volume-limited sample climbs up to the staggering 30%. The bulges of spirals follow similar trends but a larger fraction showing signs of current and recent star formation. The implication on the bulge formation and evolution is discussed.

The interplay between modern astrometry and gravitational physics is very important for the progress in both these fields. Below some threshold of accuracy, Newtonian physics fails to describe observational data and the Einstein's relativity theory must be used to model the data adequately. Many high-accuracy astronomical techniques have already passed this threshold. Moreover, modern astronomical observations cannot be adequately modeled if relativistic effects are considered as small corrections to Newtonian models. The whole way of thinking must be made compatible with relativity: this starts with the concepts of time, space and reference systems.

An overview of the standard general-relativistic framework for modeling of high-accuracy astronomical observations is given. Using this framework one can construct a standard set of building blocks for relativistic models. A suitable combination of these building blocks can be used to formulate a model for any given type of astronomical observations. As an example the problem of four dimensional solar system ephemerides is exposed in more detail. The limits of the present relativistic formulation are also briefly summarized.

On the other hand, high-accuracy astronomical observations play important role for gravitational physics itself, providing the latter with crucial observational tests. Perspectives for these astronomical tests for the next 15 years are summarized.

We use a purely data-driven rectified factor analysis to identify early-type galaxies with young (≲ 4 Gyr) stellar populations in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectroscopic Catalogue. We call these galaxies E+F galaxies, analogous to E+A galaxies. These galaxies lie in the ‘Green Valley’, between the blue cloud and the red sequence on the colour-magnitude diagram. As such, these galaxies may represent an important transient stage in the evolution of galaxies from blue and star-forming to red and passive. We investigate the distribution in projected local galaxy surface density of the E+F galaxies, and compare it with the environment of early-type and E+A galaxies. We find that i) the E+A distribution peaks strongly in projected local galaxy surface density, Σ5, at ~ 0.1−0.2 Mpc−2, ii) early-types have a flatter peak at ~ 0.06−0.2 Mpc−2, iii) the E+Fs lie somewhere in between, and iv) the distributions of the models do not agree well with the data, peaking at higher densities, and under-predicting the number of E+As at low (Σ5 < 0.3 Mpc−2) densities. The dearth of E+A and E+F galaxies in dense environments confirms that E+A and E+F galaxies are most likely the products of galaxy-galaxy merging or interactions, rather than star-forming galaxies whose star formation has been quenched by processes unique to dense environments, such as ram-pressure stripping or galaxy harassment. The similarity of the environments in which the E+F population and the E+A galaxy sample are found, together with the spectral evidence, suggests that E+F galaxies are E+A galaxies, which have evolved by a further ~ one to a few Gyr.
