We discuss results from numerical simulations of star cluster formation in the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM). The thermodynamic behavior of the star-forming gas plays a crucial role in fragmentation and determines the stellar mass function as well as the dynamic properties of the nascent stellar cluster. This holds for star formation in molecular clouds in the solar neighborhood as well as for the formation of the very first stars in the early universe. The thermodynamic state of the ISM is a result of the balance between heating and cooling processes, which in turn are determined by atomic and molecular physics and by chemical abundances. Features in the effective equation of state of the gas, such as a transition from a cooling to a heating regime, define a characteristic mass scale for fragmentation and so set the peak of the initial mass function of stars (IMF). As it is based on fundamental physical quantities and constants, this is an attractive approach to explain the apparent universality of the IMF in the solar neighborhood as well as the transition from purely primordial high-mass star formation to the more normal low-mass mode observed today.

I discuss some of the interesting discoveries gradually emerging from the HIPASS HI survey. Why were so very few dark clouds and dark galaxies identified? Could that be partly due to optical misidentifications? In some cases yes. Will Arecibo overcome some of the deficiencies of HIPASS? I argue not because large telescopes are ill suited to blind surveys. I discuss the problem of Inchoate Galaxies which can be neither young nor old, and the constancy of HI column density found amongst all sources turning up in blind HI surveys. Could some of these unexpected phenomena be the result of Spin Temperature Freezeout? If so there is a lot more HI out there than we imagined.

Coronal seismology is now a well developed area of solar physics, even though many questions remain for resolution. Here we take stock of the progress made since the first direct imaging of oscillating loops was achieved through TRACE spacecraft observations in 1999.

IAU242 was held in Alice Springs, a town of 28,000 in central Australia. In this paper the Alice after whom the town is named is identified, and her astronomical connections described.

This overview of galactic bulges begins with a discussion of the various kinds of bulges (classical, boxy/peanut-shaped, pseudo) and their likely formation mechanisms. Other specific topics include the Galactic bar/bulge and its chemical evolution, the bulge of M31, the relation between bulges and metal-poor halos (often lumped together as spheroids), the morphology-density relation and the formation of S0 galaxies, the color-structure bimodality, and scaling laws for bulges. Finally I will briefly discuss the current difficulty of forming bulgeless disk galaxies in ΛCDM.

Led by the CNES space agency the CoRoT mission is born from a joint effort of France, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Spain and ESA. In orbit around the Earth, CoRoT started its first observations in February 2007 and is, now, regularly producing ten thousand light-curves with a very high accuracy. Performances are better than expected and some Hot Jupiters have already been detected in the raw data. Once the fully corrected data will be delivered, much smaller transits should be detected giving access to the hot Neptunes and the big Terrestrial planet families. We briefly describes the status of the mission, the inflight performance and the ground based program follow up strategy. We also present some preliminary results issued from a first analysis of the data.

Some useful developments in the model physics are briefly presented, followed by model results on chemical enrichments and WR stars. We discuss the expected rotation velocities of WR stars. We emphasize that the (C+O)/He ratio is a better chemical indicator of evolution for WC stars than the C/He ratios. With or without rotation, at a given luminosity the (C+O)/He ratios should be higher in regions of lower metallicity Z. Also, for a given (C+O)/He ratio the WC stars in lower Z regions have higher luminosities. The WO stars, which are likely the progenitors of supernovae SNIc and of some GRBs, should preferentially be found in regions of low Z and be the descendants of very high initial masses. Finally, we emphasize the physical reasons why massive rotating low Z stars may also experience heavy mass loss.

The European Space Agency decision to include the Hipparcos satellite into its Science Programme is placed in the context of the years 1965-1980 and in the historical perspective of the progress of astrometry. The motivation and ideas which lead to the Hipparcos design are reviewed as well as its characteristics and performance. The amount and variety of applications represent an impressive evolution from the original science case and opened the way to much more ambitious further space missions, especially Gaia, based on the same basic principles. A giant step in technology led to a giant step in science. Next steps are presented at this Symposium.

Accretion and magnetic fields play major roles in several of the many models put forward to explain the properties of T Tauri stars since their discovery by Alfred Joy in the 1940s. Early investigators already recognized in the 1950s that a source of energy external to the star was needed to account for the emission properties of these stars in the optical range.

The opening of new spectral windows from the infrared to the ultraviolet in the 1970s and 1980s showed that the excess emission of T Tauri stars and related objects extends into all wavelength domains, while evidence of outflow and/or infall in their circumstellar medium was accumulating.

Although the disk hypothesis had been put forward by Merle Walker as early as 1972 to explain properties of YY Orionis stars and although Lynden-Bell and Pringle worked out the accretion disk model and applied it specifically to T Tauri stars in 1974, the prevailing model for young stellar objects until the mid-1980s assumed that they experienced extreme solar-type activity. It then took until the late 1980s before the indirect evidence of disks presented by several teams of researchers became so compelling that a paradigm shift occurred, leading to the current consensual picture.

I briefly review the various models proposed for explaining the properties of young stellar objects, from their discovery to the direct observations of circumstellar disks that have so elegantly confirmed the nature of young stars. I will go on to discuss more modern issues concerning their accretion disk properties and conclude with some results obtained in a recent attempt to better understand the evolution of Taurus-Auriga young stellar objects.

This review covers selected developments in maser theory since the previous meeting, Cosmic Masers: From Proto-Stars to Black Holes (Migenes & Reid 2002). Topics included are time variability of fundamental constants, pumping of OH megamasers and indicators for differentiating disks from bi-directional outflows.

This is a selective historical overview of the progess in understanding T Tauri spectra. Originally they were understood to be very young, but the physical conditions (or even geometry) of the material on the star and in its surroundings were mysterious. The origin and meaning of the emission lines was largely unknown. Today we have a detailed consensus of what is happening near and on these newly forming stars. They are very magnetically active, and the stellar field is strong and extensive enough to control both the final accretion onto the star and the launching of outflows which solve the angular momentum problem during formation. Much of this consensus has emerged from spectral information, but much remains to be learned. I highlight some of the seminal breakthroughs that have led to the current picture. There are very complex and time-variable components to the entire physical system that constitutes a T Tauri star, and spectral information at various wavelengths and resolutions is crucial to making further progress.

Young O stars are strong, hard, and variable X-ray sources; properties that strongly affect their circumstellar and galactic environments. After ≈ 1 Myr, these stars settle down to become steady sources of soft X-rays. I will use high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy and MHD modeling to show that young O stars like θ1 Ori C are well explained by the magnetically channeled wind shock scenario. After their magnetic fields dissipate, older O stars produce X-rays via shock heating in their unstable stellar winds. Here too I will use X-ray spectroscopy and numerical modeling to confirm this scenario. In addition to elucidating the nature and cause of the O star X-ray emission, modeling of the high-resolution X-ray spectra of O supergiants provides strong evidence that mass-loss rates of these O stars have been overestimated.

The Kepler Mission is a space-based mission whose primary goal is to detect Earth-size and smaller planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. The mission will monitor more than 100,000 stars for transits with a differential photometric precision of 20 ppm at V=12 for a 6.5 hour transit. It will also provide asteroseismic results on several thousand dwarf stars. It is specifically designed to continuously observe a single field of view of greater than 100 square degrees for 3.5 or more years.

This overview describes the mission design, its goals and capabilities, the measured performance for those photometer components that have now been tested, the Kepler Input Catalog, an overview of the analysis pipeline, the plans for the Follow-up Observing Program to validate the detections and characterize the parent stars, and finally, the plans for the Guest Observer and Astrophysical Data Program.

The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues were published in 1997. In the intervening 10 years, several thousand papers making more-or-less direct use of the data have been published. I summarise a number of scientific applications which illustrate the variety of problems to which the data have been applied. This includes the re-reduction of old and contemporary astrometric observations, investigations of Galactic structure and dynamics, investigations of stellar structure and evolution, investigations of the Solar System and our Earth's environment, and various uses of the binary star and photometric data.

Most stars form in dense star clusters deeply embedded in residual gas. These objects must therefore be seen as the fundamental building blocks of galaxies. With this contribution some physical processes that act in the very early and also later dynamical evolution of dense stellar systems in terms of shaping their later appearance and properties, and the impact they have on their host galaxies, are highlighted. Considering dense systems with increasing mass, it turns out that near 106M⊙ their properties change fundamentally: stellar populations become complex, a galaxial mass–radius relation emerges and the median two-body relaxation time becomes longer than a Hubble time. Intriguingly, only systems with a two-body relaxation time longer than a Hubble time show weak evidence for dark matter, whereby dSph galaxies form total outliers.

Following the Inaugural Ceremony, the President welcomed the participants to the first plenary working session of the IAU XXVII General Assembly, notably the representatives of the National Members.

The existence of the solar tachocline, a thin differentially rotating layer at the base of the convection zone which is inferred from helioseismology, leads to the concept of an interface dynamo. The tachocline is magnetically coupled to the radiative interior and the overlying convection zone. A multilayered interface dynamo is required to describe the dynamo process involved. We first discuss a two-dimensional multilayered interface dynamo model in cartesian geometry consisting of four horizontal layers with different magnetic diffusivities magnetically coupled by the three sets of interface matching conditions for the generated magnetic field. Exact solutions of the coupled dynamo system are obtained in this model. We then discuss a fully three-dimensional and multi-layered spherical dynamic interface dynamo using a finite element method based on the three-dimensional tetrahedralization of the whole spherical system. The spherical dynamic interface dynamo also consists of four magnetically coupled zones. In the convection zone, the fully three-dimensional dynamic feedback of Lorentz forces is taken into account. It is shown that the dynamo is characterized by a strong toroidal magnetic field, selects dipolar symmetry and propagates equatorward.

One explanation for the disparity between Cold Dark Matter predictions of galaxy numbers and observations could be that there are numerous dark galaxies in the Universe. These galaxies may still contain baryons, but no stars, and may be detectable in the 21cm line of atomic hydrogen. In this paper we describe a numerical model of the galaxy population and predict what might be found in blind 21cm surveys. We describe the detection of a dark galaxy candidate (VIRGOHI21) and discuss a model of its origin.

Using the unique dataset obtained within the course of the SAURON project, a radically new view of the structure, dynamics and stellar populations of early-type galaxies has emerged. We show that galaxies come in two broad flavours (slow and fast rotators), depending on whether or not they exhibit clear large-scale rotation, as indicated via a robust measure of the specific angular momentum of baryons. This property is also linked with other physical characteristics of early-type galaxies, such as: the presence of dynamically decoupled cores, orbital structure and anisotropy, stellar populations and dark matter content. I here report on the observed link between this baryonic angular momentum and a mass sequence, and how this uniquely relates to the building of the red sequence via dissipative/dissipationless mergers and secular evolution.
