Mr. Kemble (“Saxons in England,” p. 47 note) says: “I am inclined to think that the cwealmstow or place of execution was properly in the mark, as it is indeed probable that all capital punishments among the Germans were originally in the nature of sacrifices to the gods.” It is worth notice that the cwealmstow here occurs at that part of the parish boundary which is also the county boundary, for, at the elevated spot of ground on the Roman road between Cambridge and Godmanchester, now nameless, but plainly identified with Maccan ho, the county of Cambridge “marches with” the county of Huntingdon, Fen Drayton being the last parish in Cambridgeshire, Fenstanton the first in Huntingdonshire.
