page 23 note * Mr. W. H. St. John Hope has since pointed out to me that the inscription on the quillons, which is in Roman capitals, and all the engraving on the pommel are of late sixteenth century date. This work was probably done in 1595, when it was agreed that “the greatest and the least swordes be newelie repareid in scabottes hiltes pumbles handells and cheapes wth such coste and fashone as shalbe thought good by Mr. Maior.”
