Neural representations for abstract features of auditory stimuli were studied by presenting reading subjects with stimulus blocks composed of pairs of two closely spaced tones. There were frequent ascending standard pairs (i.e., the second tone was higher in frequency than the first tone) and occasional descending deviant pairs. Both types of pairs varied randomly over a wide frequency range. In separate blocks, the tones forming a pair were presented either to the same ear or to opposite ears. The deviant pairs elicited the mismatch negativity (MMN) in all conditions, which indicates that the brain can automatically extract and represent an abstract invariant feature (rise or fall) of stimulation above the point of binaural convergence and detect violations against it. Poor behavioral performance in an active discrimination task suggested that conscious discrimination processes can only partially use the outcome of the preattentive discrimination processes reflected by the MMN.

Event-related potentials were recorded from 80 participants ranging in age from 7 to 24 years while they attended selectively to stimuli with a specified color (red or blue) in an attempt to detect the occurrence of target stimuli. Color attention effects were identified as frontal selection positivity (FSP; 140–275 ms), selection negativity (SN; 150–300 ms), and N2b (200–450 ms), whereas target detection was reflected in P3b (300–700 ms). There were age-related decreases in the latencies of FSP, N2b, and P3b that paralleled decreases in reaction time and error rates. Also, the SN amplitude increased with advancing age, whereas both N2b and P3b showed changes in scalp topography. These results represent neurophysiological evidence that the efficiency of visual selective processes increases during childhood and adolescence. Developmental growth may take place at both relatively early and late levels of visual selective information processing.

The characteristics of mismatch negativity (MMN) elicited by dichotic stimulation were examined using frequency-deviant stimuli presented to the right, to the left, or to both sides. The experiment was run twice, once using earphones and once using loudspeakers in free field. With both modes of stimulation, deviants presented in the left, right, or both ears, or tones that were switched between ears, elicited comparable MMNs, with a peak latency of about 180 ms. With earphones, the amplitude of the MMN was bigger at the frontal-lateral right hemisphere sites than at the homologous left-hemisphere sites for all deviance conditions. Scalp current density analysis revealed that deviance in the right side elicited bilaterally equivalent frontal current sinks and a trend towards stronger contralateral current sources at the mastoid sites. In contrast, left side deviance elicited frontal sinks and temporal current sources stronger over the right hemiscalp. These results are compatible with the multiple-generator model of MMN. The attention-related role of the MMN is discussed, suggesting comparable attention mechanisms for vision and audition.

As we continue to elucidate relationships between neural structures and cognitive functioning in this Decade of the Brain, it is important not to lose sight of the larger context. The brain is but one component of the complex system that is the body. We take in information and interact with the world through our bodies, and our bodies change with—and in some cases change—cognitive and emotional processing. In this introductory paper, we present an overview of a broad range of psychophysiological techniques: electroencephalography, event-related potentials, magnetoencephalography, positron emission tomography, optical imaging, functional magnetic resonance imaging, electromyograms, eye tracking, pupillometry, cardiovascular measures, and electrodermal activity. These techniques not only differ in their temporal and spatial resolutions but also in the physiological and psychological processes to which they are sensitive. With respect to the system as a whole, these techniques are thus complementary. Combining measures—old and new, central and peripheral—ultimately provides the most inferential power for attacking the questions we hope to answer with all psychophysiological measures in our quest to understand the nature of the relationship between the mind and the body.

The concept of physiological individual response specificity (IRS) was critically discussed. A review of empirical studies focused on IRS magnitude, stability, and personality correlates. Using difference scores, an average of 33% of the participants showed a significant IRS. IRS stability was found in only 15% of the participants. In some studies, IRS incidence was associated with neuroticism or stress coping styles. We suggest that the IRS concept should include not only purely constitutional but also situational and psychological determinants. Predictions from this revised biopsychological model were tested with a data set comprising 48 healthy male participants who completed six tasks, which were replicated three times in 1-week intervals. At Session 1, 21% of the participants displayed a significant IRS. IRS stability was found in only 8% of the participants. Participants with a significant IRS at Session 1 reported higher levels of fear (anger and happiness as covariates) and of pounding heart. Between-session IRS (trait-IRS) but not within-session IRS (state-IRS) was associated with trait anxiety.

A problem confronting the search for psychopathology-related genes concerns the difficulty identifying gene carriers. Psychiatric diagnosis provides imperfect identification of affected individuals, and unaffected gene carriers go undetected. Psychophysiological measures may assist molecular genetic investigations by indicating genetic susceptibility for psychopathology, thus increasing the probability of identifying affected and unaffected gene carriers. Research strategies based on these premises are applied to the study of psychoactive substance use disorders and schizophrenia. Data are presented illustrating (1) that individual differences in inhibitory control involving autonomic and antisaccade eye movement measures and the P3 component of the event-related potential may be sensitive to susceptibility for substance use disorders, and (2) that eye tracking variables may identify genetic risk for schizophrenia.

Contralateral-control methods can be applied to psychophysiology and in particular to the study of visual memory. Visual memory possesses some degree of hemispheric organization, so that visual memory traces for laterally presented stimuli are stronger or more durable in the hemisphere contralateral to the hemifield where the stimuli were first presented. I first introduce the concept of hemispheric organization of function. Then I discuss how hemispheric organization can be exploited for obtaining information about the time course and brain localization of psychological processes, using a contralateral-control method. Behavioral and event-related brain potential data support the hemispheric organization view of visual memory, and the contralateral-control method, in conjunction with the recording of the event-related optical signal, can be used to reveal the existence of memory-driven processes in early stations of the visual system.

The objective of the study was to assess the validity of an activity monitor (AM) within a psychophysiological study. The AM was based on four body-fixed accelerometers and discriminated postures, transitions, and dynamic activities. Three subjects participated in each of two 4-hr sessions. During each session, consisting of two protocols, ambulatory accelerometer and heart rate measurements were made. The output of the AM was compared with simultaneously recorded video tapes. An overall agreement between AM and video of 88 and 96% was found. The number of transitions and dynamic periods, and the duration of activities were well determined. Posture-related heart rate changes were demonstrated. A three-sensor configuration hardly influenced the validity scores. The AM appeared to be a valid instrument to quantify aspects of physical activity, and offers new possibilities for ambulatory psychophysiological research.

Twelve right-handed men participated in two mental rotation tasks as their regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was monitored using positron emission tomography. In one task, participants mentally rotated and compared figures composed of angular branching forms; in the other task, participants mentally rotated and compared drawings of human hands. In both cases, rCBF was compared with a baseline condition that used identical stimuli and required the same comparison, but in which rotation was not required. Mental rotation of branching objects engendered activation in the parietal lobe and Area 19. In contrast, mental rotation of hands engendered activation in the precentral gyrus (M1), superior and inferior parietal lobes, primary visual cortex, insula, and frontal Areas 6 and 9. The results suggest that at least two different mechanisms can be used in mental rotation, one mechanism that recruits processes that prepare motor movements and another mechanism that does not.

The effect of aerobic training on parasympathetic reactivity to mental stress is unclear. Thus, the parasympathetic response, as assessed by time series analysis of heart period variability (HPVts), of 10 trained male runners (trained group), 10 inherently low resting heart rate untrained men (low HR group), and 10 normal resting HR men (control group) at rest and to two mental stressors was examined. Participants completed a mental arithmetic and Stroop task. Resting HPVts at high and medium frequencies was significantly greater for the trained and the low HR groups than for the control group. Significantly greater decreases in HPVts at the medium frequency during arithmetic recovery were measured for the trained and low HR groups compared with the response of the control group. Significantly greater decreases in HPVts at both the the high and medium frequencies during the first two epochs of the Stroop occurred only for the trained and low HR groups. These results suggest that the greater HPVts at rest and decline in HPVts during and after mental challenge is influenced by both aerobic training and genetic inheritance.

P300 differences for target (.10), nontarget (.10), and standard tones (.80) were assessed using a three-stimulus oddball paradigm in which participants responded only to the target (n = 12). Target/standard (easy or difficult) and nontarget/standard (large or small) pitch differences were manipulated orthogonally. In all conditions, target tones elicited a parietal P300, which was affected only by the target/standard discrimination ease. Nontarget in the easy/large and difficult/small conditions elicited a parietal but smaller P300 than the target but in the easy/small condition elicited similar ERPs to the standard. However, nontarget stimuli in the difficult/large condition elicited an anterior maximum and earlier P300 (P3a) component. The findings suggest that target P300s are not influenced by the nontarget stimulus configuration, whereas the nontarget P300 outcomes are determined directly by the stimulus context. The theoretical implications are discussed.

Two psychophysiological measures, poor suppression of midlatency auditory-evoked responses in a paired stimulus paradigm and ocular motor abnormalities, may index genetic liability for schizophrenia. An important feature of these measures is that both patients and their nonpsychotic relatives exhibit basically the same performance. These measures may be successful endophenotypes for schizophrenia because they assess poor response inhibition associated with dysfunction of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex circuitry. Data bearing on this hypothesis are reviewed, and it is posited that assessment of the auditory-evoked gamma band response and saccade measures of inhibitory abilities are the most valid behavioral measures of schizophrenia's neuropathological correlates. The extant data suggest that psychophysiological studies of schizophrenia can provide consistent and theoretically meaningful information for localizing neuropathology and for assessing the genetics of this complex disorder.

The nature and early time course of the initial processing differences between visually matched linguistic and nonlinguistic images were studied with event-related potentials (ERPs). The first effect began at 90 ms when ERPs to written words diverged from other objects, including faces. By 125 ms, ERPs to words and faces were more positive than those to other objects, effects identified with the P150. The amplitude and scalp distribution of P150s to words and faces were similar. The P150 seemed to be elicited selectively by images resembling any well-learned category of visual patterns. We propose that (a) visual perceptual categorization based on long-term experience begins by 125 ms, (b) P150 amplitude varies with the cumulative experience people have discriminating among instances of specific categories of visual objects (e.g., words, faces), and (c) the P150 is a scalp reflection of letterstring and face intracranial ERPs in posterior fusiform gyrus.

The P300 event-related potential (ERP) was elicited in left- and right-handed young adult male and female participants (n = 20/group) with both auditory and visual stimulus discrimination tasks that varied systematically in difficulty. P300 amplitude was larger across all task conditions for left- than for right-handed participants at anterior and central electrode sites. P300 latency was shorter across all task conditions for left- than for right-handers. Task difficulty did not affect the ERP handedness differences. Male and female subjects demonstrated comparable ERP handedness effects, although smaller P300 components were obtained for males than for females. When considered in the context of corpus callosal size differences for left- versus right-handed and male versus female participants, the findings suggest that the P300 reflects callosal size and interhemispheric transmission efficacy.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha power has been demonstrated to be inversely related to mental activity and has subsequently been used as an indirect measure of brain activation. The thalamus has been proposed as an important site for modulation of rhythmic alpha activity. Studies in animals have suggested that cortical alpha rhythms are correlated with alpha rhythms in the thalamus. However, little empirical evidence exists for this relation in humans. In the current study, resting EEG and a fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scan were measured during the same experimental session. Over a 30-min period, average EEG alpha power across 28 electrodes from 27 participants was robustly inversely correlated with glucose metabolic activity in the thalamus. These data provide the first evidence for a relation between alpha EEG power and thalamic activity in humans.

The effects of attention were assessed on novelty P3 amplitude and scalp distribution elicited by environmental sounds in young and elderly volunteers who participated in either actively attended or ignored oddball conditions. For the young, novelty P3 amplitude decreased with time on task during both attend and ignore sequences. Amplitude decrements were greatest at frontal sites during the attend condition, but at all sites during the ignore condition. A reliable amplitude decrement was not observed for the elderly in either the attend or ignore oddball series. The data suggest that attention differentially activates multiple generators that contribute to scalp-recorded novelty P3 activity. The lack of novelty P3 habituation seen in the elderly is consistent with changes in frontal lobe function as age increases.
