Green kyllinga is a relatively new weed species in well-irrigated turfs in the southwest US. To understand the germination requirements of green kyllinga, the effects of planting depth, temperature, pH, and osmotic potential were determined. Green kyllinga emergence was sensitive to planting depth. At 21 days after planting (DAP), emergence of green kyllinga was 60% when planted at the soil surface but only 20% at 0.5 cm and less than 5% at 1 cm. Germination occurred at temperatures between 17 and 30 C but was notably better between 20 and 24 C. Germination was uniform from pH 5.5 to 9.5. Germination decreased between the water potentials −0.1 to −0.6 MPa, although germination was high at water potentials found in irrigated turf. The environmental conditions found in nonstressed turf areas in Arizona will likely support the establishment of green kyllinga. The efficacy of herbicides for the control of green kyllinga was also determined. Control of kyllinga (95% or greater) was obtained with preemergence applications of oxadiazon, dithiopyr, and metolachlor, and with postemergence applications of DSMA, halosulfuron-methyl, and imazaquin.

Tropical soda apple is an exotic perennial pasture weed currently reported in the U.S. only from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina. In experiments to determine its environmental requirements and potential range, tropical soda apple was grown in growth chambers in 16 day/night temperature regimes ranging from 18/8 to 36/26 C. After 100 d of growth, maximum height, leaf area, and shoot biomass occurred at day/night temperatures ranging from 24/26 to 36/26 C. The plants achieved 50% or more of maximum leaf area, biomass, and height at 18/26, 24/20, 24/26, 30/26, and 36/26 C. Plants survived in 8 C nights with day temperatures of 18 to 36 C, but biomass and leaf area were only 3 to 10% of maximum. Leaf appearance rate was linearly related to mean temperature over the range of 11.3 to 29.3 C, with a slope coefficient of 0.018 leaves/day/degree C. Flowering was delayed by photoperiods shorter than 10 h or temperatures lower than 24/20 C. In favorable temperatures, plants flowered within 60 d after emergence in photoperiods ranging from 8 to 16 h. Artificially pollinated flowers produced fruit with germinable seeds within 6 to 7 wk, at temperatures ranging from 23/17 to 32/26 C. A regression equation relating vegetative growth to day and night temperatures indicated that tropical soda apple could achieve 30% or more of its maximum growth rate during 7 mo of the year in southern Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas and during 4 to 5 mo of the year at sites in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Neither temperature nor photoperiod will limit its further spread in the southern U.S. and adjacent regions.

Broom and threadleaf snakeweed reduce rangeland productivity throughout the western United States. These closely related species are only distinguishable at flowering and are highly variable in morphology and phenology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic variation among snakeweed populations from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Wyoming using isozyme analysis. Plants from each population were transplanted into pots and maintained in a greenhouse for 6 mo prior to analysis. Protein was extracted from young leaf tissue and separated using starch gel electrophoresis. Genetic variation was assessed based on expressed isozyme patterns of 10 enzymes. Of 10 enzymes tested, 16 loci were identified. Total genetic diversity (HT) was large for the eight polymorphic loci in broom snakeweed and three polymorphic loci in threadleaf snakeweed. Genetic variation among populations (DST) of both species contributed the major portion of diversity, but diversity among individuals within each population (HS) was also present. Phylogenetic analysis using Nei's genetic identity and distance determined broom snakeweed populations from New Mexico and Texas were more alike than those from Wyoming and Texas, or those from Wyoming and New Mexico. Compared to genetic differences among New Mexico broom snakeweed populations defined in a previous study, genetic diversity was greater among populations from different states. In addition, genetic variation was smaller in threadleaf snakeweed populations relative to broom snakeweed populations. Results concurred with previous research designating broom snakeweed as the progenitor of threadleaf snakeweed. Local populations of each species have probably developed due to long-term environmental selection.

Redstem is an important weed in California water-seeded rice fields because of its aquatic habit, wide distribution, interference with harvest, and resistance to the herbicide bensulfuron. Our objective was to understand the mechanisms of competition for light between rice and redstem, with the goal of improving redstem control. A replicated greenhouse experiment was done in 1993 and 1994. Rice was water-seeded at a rate of 400 seeds m−2, and redstem was seeded simultaneously at approximate densities of 0, 50, and 100 seeds m−2 in continuously flooded 0.77 m2 basins. Plants were harvested once at final harvest in 1993 and twice in 1994, with an additional nondestructive sampling 34 days after seeding (DAS). Despite slower early growth, redstem height exceeded rice height about 45 DAS. At the midseason harvest in 1994 (56 DAS), no effects of redstem competition on any rice response variables were detected. However, at final harvest (110 and 118 DAS, 1993 and 1994, respectively) redstem competition at both treatment densities reduced rice tiller density, panicle density, shoot drymass, and grain drymass. Redstem competition reduced rice growth only after penetrating the canopy. Shade cast by redstem through rice maturity decreased shoot and grain production and increased tiller mortality. Lodging caused by redstem further affected rice growth. Season-long competition from redstem at mean densities of 67 and 110 plants m−2 reduced rough rice yields 31 and 39%, respectively, making redstem the most competitive broadleaved rice weed yet studied. Improved understanding of rice-redstem interactions indicates that using alternative herbicides to bensulfuron is unlikely to increase yield losses to redstem, and that control may be improved by increasing rice plant densities or slightly delaying early season chemical control. Because these strategies are mechanistic, they may also be useful for controlling other rice weeds with growth patterns similar to redstem.

Barnyardgrass is a serious weed problem in cornfields in Ontario. Field experiments were conducted at two locations in 1994 and 1995 to determine the influence of emergence time and barnyardgrass density on corn yield loss, leaf area at 50% silking, and barnyardgrass seed production. Selected barnyardgrass densities up to 200 plants m−1 were established within 12.5 cm on either side of the corn row. Barnyardgrass seeds were planted concurrently with corn and at the 3- to 5- or 1- to 2-leaf stage of corn growth in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Barnyardgrass density and seedling emergence relative to corn influenced the magnitude of corn yield loss. Maximum corn grain yield loss ranged from 26 to 35% for early emerging barnyardgrass, and less than 6% yield loss occurred from barnyardgrass seedlings emerging later than the 4-leaf stage of corn growth. Changes in corn leaf area index at 50% silking reflected the level of barnyardgrass competition in corn. Maximum leaf area reduction ranged from 21 to 23%. Barnyardgrass seed production varied with time of seedling emergence and density. Ten barnyardgrass plants emerging up to the 3-leaf stage of corn growth produced 14,400 to 34,600 seeds m−2 compared to only 1,200 to 2,800 seeds m−2 from plants emerging after the 4-leaf corn stage. The results of this study are essential in the development of an integrated weed management strategy for corn.

Glyphosate applied at rates of 0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.1, 2.2, 3.4, 4.5, 6.7, 9.0, and 13.4 kg ai ha−1 was evaluated for the control of greenhouse-grown Erythroxylum novogranatense var. novogranatense and E. coca var. coca plants. Glyphosate reduced live weight of both species, 6 wk after treatment, at rates as low as 0.6 kg ha−1, but was more effective in reducing live weight and regrowth on E. novogranatense than E. coca. Glyphosate at 1.1 kg ha−1 killed 100% of E. novogranatense plants 5 mo after treatment. Glyphosate rates of 2.2 kg ha−1 and higher reduced regrowth of E. coca plants 65 to 100%, independent of leaf age at time of spraying. Control of regrowth persisted for over 17 mo after treatment, with 37% of E. coca plants dying at rates of 13.4 kg ha−1 between 6 mo and 1 yr after treatment. Glyphosate, applied up to 6.7 kg ha−1, had no significant effect on regrowth of E. coca when plants were defoliated 24 h before treatment. Glyphosate at 2.2 kg ha−1 effectively killed E. novogranatense plants and reduced leaf production of E. coca plants.

This study was conducted to evaluate the mobility of 14C-metolachlor over 1 yr for three seasons when applied preemergent to undisturbed field lysimeters with and without soybean representing cropped and noncropped zones, respectively. Leachate was collected weekly and analyzed for total 14C, metolachlor, and metabolites. Lysimeters were removed, sectioned, and analyzed for 14C. Sixty and 90 days after treatment (DAT), there was less soil water in lysimeters with soybean. Recovery of 14C in lysimeters decreased with time and ranged from 54 to 74% 30 DAT followed by a slower rate of loss with 35 to 49% remaining 365 DAT. Comparable amounts of total 14C were observed in soybean lysimeters as in fallow lysimeters 30, 60, and 90 DAT. 14C distribution in the lysimeters, however, was quite different. Sixty and 90 DAT, 14C mobility in soybean lysimeters was less than in fallow lysimeters. Also, less leachate was collected from soybean lysimeters, which resulted in later appearances and lesser amounts of 14C in the leachate. Cumulative leachate from lysimeters with and without soybean 365 DAT contained 2% and 10 to 18% of the applied 14C, respectively. Peak concentrations of 14C in leachate from fallow columns occurred about 90 DAT and were two to 19 times higher than 14C concentrations in leachate from soybean lysimeters. Metolachlor concentrations in leachate were well below the National Health Advisory level for drinking water in all cases. Apparent volatilization losses of 14C amounted to 26 to 46% of the applied 14C-metolachlor 30 DAT. These results suggest that herbicide mobility is different in cropped vs. fallow sites and possibly in intra- and interrow crop positions.

Genetic variation was assessed in a range of populations of wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Sixty markers were used to assess the extent of genetic variation in wild mustard populations sampled throughout 12 different locations in the United Kingdom, including herbicide treated and untreated sites. In addition, selected sites were sampled over two consecutive seasons. Individual plant analysis was required, since a high degree of intra-population genetic variation was observed. The apparent extent of genetic variation in a population at one site increased when the results from two consecutive seasons were assessed. The range of genetic variation was as high in the herbicide-treated populations as in those which were untreated. Genetic diversity was maintained in populations of wild mustard where rotational cropping and herbicide use was practiced. These results confirm the utility of RAPD for the determination of genetic variation in outcrossing species where no prior genotypic knowledge is available.

Two field experiments were conducted to examine the competitive effect of common cocklebur and sicklepod in soybean. Factors examined included sap flow of both the weed and the crop, as well as the traditional parameters of weed and crop growth and crop yield. The intent was to determine to what extent competitive effects could be attributed to differential water utilization. In the first study, soybean planted at 20 plants m−1 row was infested with either sicklepod at 10 plants m−1 row or common cocklebur at two plants m−1 row. Sicklepod reduced soybean sap flow and yield 53 and 49%, respectively. Common cocklebur reduced soybean sap flow and yield 31 and 38%, respectively. Within a weed species, weed-induced yield and sap flow reductions were comparable, indicating that water deprivation was the primary detriment that these weeds inflicted on soybean. Individual common cocklebur plants were 3.9 times more competitive than sicklepod with respect to reducing soybean yield. However, sap flow of individual common cocklebur plants was only 1.4 times more than that of sicklepod, indicating that water deprivation was not the only causal factor in weed-crop competition. In the second experiment, sicklepod was planted in soybean (fixed density) and clipped to either half the height, same height as soybean, or left unclipped, in an attempt to simulate herbicide-induced stunting. Clipping sicklepod had a positive effect on soybean sap flow and yield. Thus, the benefits of reduced weed competition were achieved without killing sicklepod.

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the extent of purple nutsedge tuber depletion and shoot regrowth when shoots were removed periodically from plants sprouting from tubers of different original weights. Presprouted purple nutsedge tubers were planted in 0.5-L plastic containers filled with potting medium. Tuber weight categories were 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1 g per tuber. Shoots were removed by cutting at soil level beginning 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 d after transplanting (DAT). Shoot removal occurred every 6 d after the first removal with a minimum of seven removals. Tuber weight had an effect on both shoot number and dry weight when the first removal was imposed either 6 or 12 DAT. When initial shoot removal was begun 6 DAT, total tuber depletion was achieved after the fifth removal for tubers weighing 0.25 g and after the seventh removal for tubers weighing 0.50 g. When the initial removal was delayed until 12 DAT, only tubers weighing 0.25 g were depleted after the sixth removal. No tuber depletion occurred for tubers weighing 0.75 g or more at any initial removal time. Greater initial sprouting vigor was observed among large tubers compared to smaller ones. Early removal (6 DAT) promoted the formation of more shoots from tubers weighing 0.75 or 1 g.

Perception of light by phytochrome is a mechanism that triggers weed seed germination in response to soil disturbance. Photoconversion of phytochrome from the red light absorbing form to the active far-red absorbing form depends on hydration of phytochrome. This research was conducted to determine the soil water threshold for the photoinduction of germination by the brief exposure of light that occurs during soil disturbance, and to determine how this threshold is affected by the fluence of the light stimulus and fluence sensitivity of the seed population. Redroot pigweed seedling emergence and germination response to red light (R) was studied for a range of water potentials. Water potential gradients were established by incubating seeds in soils wetted to various water contents, or in polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG) solutions. After imposing the light treatments, seeds were returned to a fully hydrated state. Seedling emergence in response to R increased as the volumetric water content (θv) of soils increased. At volumetric water contents of 4.0%, R-induced seedling emergence was inhibited 50% compared to photoinduced seedling emergence at the highest soil water contents tested. Attenuation of photoinduction was more pronounced at low vs. high R fluences in freshly imbibed seeds, but was unaffected in seeds that exhibited enhanced fluence sensitivity. In ecosystems where seasonal soil moisture extremes are prevalent, the photoinduction of seed germination may be limited in dry microsites such as surface crusts or under extreme drought conditions.

Five PRE herbicides were applied at below maximum registered use rates to the same bermudagrass turf plots for three consecutive years for large crabgrass and goosegrass control. In most instances, full labeled herbicide rates were needed for acceptable large crabgrass and goosegrass control during the 1st year of treatment. All herbicides controlled large crabgrass but not goosegrass during the 1st year. Weed management programs that utilized the lowest herbicide rates while maintaining ≥ 80% control during the 2nd and 3rd years varied with herbicides. The programs for large crabgrass were prodiamine at 0.8 kg ha−1 the 1st year followed by 0.2 kg ha−1 the 2nd and 3rd years; oryzalin at 2.2 kg ha−1 the 1st year followed by 0.6 kg ha−1 the 2nd and 3rd years; dithiopyr at 0.3 kg ha−1 the 1st year followed by 0.1 kg ha−1 the 2nd and 3rd years; pendimethalin at 1.7 kg ha−1 the 1st year followed by 0.8 kg ha−1 the 2nd and 3rd years; and oxadiazon at 3.4 kg hha−1 the 1st year followed by 2.5 kg ha−1 the 2nd year and 1.7 kg ha−1 the 3rd year. The programs for goosegrass were prodiamine at 0.8 kg ha−1 followed by 0.6 kg ha−1 the 2nd and 0.4 kg ha−1 the 3rd year; dithiopyr at 0.8 kg ha−1 the 1st year followed by 0.4 kg ha−1 the 2nd and 3rd years; pendimethalin at 3.4 kg ha−1 the 1st year followed by 1.7 kg ha−1 the 2nd year and 0.8 kg ha−1 the 3rd year; and oxadiazon at 3.4 kg ha−1 followed by 0.8 kg ha−1 the 2nd and 3rd years. Because goosegrass control with oryzalin at reduced rates was unacceptable during the 1st and 2nd years, this herbicide should not be used in a reduced rate program. The quality of common bermudagrass was not affected by reduced herbicide rates.

Field experiments were conducted in 1991, 1992, and 1993 to evaluate the dissipation and carryover potential of atrazine from starch-encapsulated (SE) and commercial formulations (CF). Formulation was not a significant factor in atrazine dissipation at any application rate. The dissipation time required to reach one-half of the original concentration (DT50) was measured for each formulation. The atrazine DT50 combined over all years (1991 to 1993) and rates (1.1 to 3.4 kg ai ha−1) was 7 wk for the CF, 10.3 wk for the SE large particles (0.85 to 1.4 mm), and 8.2 wk for the SE small (0.425 to 0.85 mm). Oat injury in the spring of 1992 from all rates of both SE formulations applied in 1991 was greater than that from the CF formulation. Increased oat injury from SE formulations was attributed to more atrazine present in the top 0 to 8 cm of soil compared to that for the CF. Despite significant oat injury from the 1991 application, no injury was observed on soybeans planted in 1992. Soybeans planted in 1993 and 1994 also showed no injury from the respective applications. These findings suggest that the potential for atrazine carryover from starch-encapsulated formulations was not greater than that from the commercial formulation.

Intensive surveys were conducted in 2 fields in eastern Nebraska to determine the spatial stability of common sunflower, velvetleaf, green and yellow foxtail, and hemp dogbane over 4 yr (1992 to 1995). The 1st field was planted to soybean in 1992 and corn in 1993, 1994, and 1995. The 2nd field was planted to corn in 1992 and 1994 and soybean in 1993 and 1995. Weed density was sampled prior to postemergence herbicide application at approximately 800 locations per year in each field on a regular 7 m grid. The same locations were sampled every year. Weed density at locations between the sample sites was determined by linear triangulation interpolation. Weed seedling distribution was significantly aggregated, with large weed-free areas in both fields. Common sunflower, velvetleaf, and hemp dogbane patches were very persistent in diameter in the east-west and north-south directions and in location and area over 4 yr in the 1st field. Foxtail distribution and density continuously increased in each of the 4 yr in the first field and decreased in the 2nd field. A geographic information system was used to overlay maps from each year for a species. This showed that 36% of the sampled area was continuously free of common sunflower, 62.5% was free of hemp dogbane, and 11.5% was free of velvetleaf in the 1st field, but only 1% was free of velvetleaf in the 2nd field. The persistence of broadleaf weed patches suggests that weed seedling distributions mapped in one year are good predictors of future seedling distributions. Improved and more efficient sampling methods are needed.

Economic decision rules for postemergence herbicide control of barnyardgrass in corn were developed. Damage and control functions that formed the basis of an economic model were estimated. Barnyardgrass density and time of emergence relative to the crop were fundamental to calculate the damage function. The control function described barnyardgrass dry weight response to variable doses of two herbicides. Both the biologist's and economist's weed control decision rules, derived from the economic model, were influenced by time of weed emergence relative to the crop, corn yield, and price. Inclusion of time of weed emergence relative to the crop improved our interpretative ability of derived decision rules. The biologist's threshold weed density was more sensitive to changes in parameter values than the economist's optimal herbicide dose strategy. Herbicide use with recommended label dose was greater than either the economically optimal or the biologically effective doses. Use of the biologically effective dose for postemergence weed control decisions was cost efficient and could be of practical significance to corn growers.

On-farm implementation of IWM includes the biological and economic rationalization of weed management decisions. This, in turn, requires the ability to predict how weed populations and pressures will change with farm management options such as tillage method. We have developed a set of algorithms that simulate seedling emergence of mixed populations of green and redroot pigweed on the basis of the ecophysiological responses of seed germination and shoot elongation to temperature and, for germination, to moisture. The algorithms were calibrated using field data from 1993 and evaluated with data from two locations in 1994 and 1995. Over both sites and years, for four tillage systems, cumulative emergence was predicted with an overall root mean square error of 1.7%. Overprediction in one year was attributed to moisture shortage. Errors were greater for moldboard plowed plots than for those no-tilled. This decreased ability to predict emergence with increased tillage (soil disturbance) suggests that the algorithms should be modified to account for increased heterogeneity in weed seed distribution and soil moisture within disturbed soil. The algorithms, which were explicitly designed for incorporation within a crop growth model (e.g., CROPSIM), could become a useful part of a decision support system to rationalize weed management. Importantly, they could help predict changes in weed populations as farm management is adjusted, thereby reducing economic and environmental risk in agroecosystems.

Two greenhouse experiments were conducted to compare the growth of individual sulfonylurea-resistant and -susceptible kochia under noncompetitive conditions. Aboveground leaf and stem dry weight, and leaf area per plant were measured weekly 14 times, starting 14 d after planting. Data were fitted using the Richards function for shoot dry weight per plant, a polynomial exponential for leaf area per plant and splined function to calculate leaf area ratio, leaf weight ratio, and leaf/stem ratio. Absolute and relative growth rates, and net assimilation rate were derived from these functions. Growth and development of individual sulfonylurea-resistant and -susceptible kochia plants under noncompetitive conditions was the same. Final shoot dry weight and leaf area were unaffected by aceto lactate synthase enzyme differences in the kochia biotypes. However, more resources were partitioned to leaves than stems in resistant than in susceptible kochia. If competitive abilities of sulfonylurea-resistant and -susceptible kochia are different, it is not the consequence of differential growth and ontogeny of the two types of plants.

We studied the effect of no-till, chisel, and moldboard plow and the presence or absence of corn on soil temperature, moisture and, subsequently, the emergence phenology and density of pigweed seedlings at 2 sites from 1993 to 1995 inclusively. Tillage significantly affected the phenology of pigweed seedling emergence only during a June drought at one site in 1994. Soil temperature and moisture, measured at 2.5-cm depths, also were unaffected by tillage. Weed phenology is usually earlier in no-till because more seeds are located closer to the surface (< 5 cm deep) in no-till, thereby reducing the delay in penetrating through the soil, and because soil temperatures and moisture are nearer the germination and emergence optima. However, pigweed seedlings are already physiologically restricted to germination depths of less than 2.5 cm regardless of tillage; therefore, this prior constraint eliminated any potential differences in emergence phenologies caused by tillage. The presence or absence of corn also did not affect soil temperatures, soil moisture, or pigweed seedling emergence phenologies. Pigweed seedling density was significantly higher in no-till; this may have been caused by increased numbers of seeds near the soil surface in no-till. The presence or absence of corn did not affect pigweed seedling density; the lack of a significant effect probably reflects high variances in density. Although necessary for most weed species, tillage may be a less important factor to consider in predicting pigweed population dynamics and subsequent management recommendations.

This research compared seven field bindweed control treatments to a check in a 3-yr winter wheat-sorghum-fallow rotation. Treatments included 3 wk intervals of sweep tillage combined with one or two annual applications of 2,4-D (tillage and 2,4-D). Two other treatments were the same as tillage and 2,4-D, except dicamba or a mixture of picloram and 2,4-D were applied once in October after wheat harvest. A fourth treatment was identical to tillage and 2,4-D, except imazapyr was sprayed immediately after harvest of wheat. Also, three no-tillage systems using glyphosate and 2,4-D at monthly intervals were supplemented with either dicamba, picloram and 2,4-D, or imazapyr the same as in treatments involving tillage and 2,4-D. The check was sweep tilled every 6 wk. All treatments controlled field bindweed in one rotation of two fallow periods and two crops. After control was accomplished, wheat and sorghum yields were about twice the check. Using 1995 costs and returns, profit for an owner-operator for the two fallow periods and two crops was $123 ha−1 for tillage and 2,4-D, compared to $19 ha−1 for the check. Tillage and 2,4-D supplemented with picloram or imazapyr were almost as profitable as tillage and 2,4-D. Because of high herbicide cost and low yields, no-tillage treatments lost money. Profits with a 33:67 owner-tenant rental agreement were $105 and $21 ha−1, respectively, for owner and tenant using tillage and 2,4-D. With no field bindweed control practice, the tenant lost $33 ha−1 and the owner made $51 ha−1.
