Mapping weed infestations in an annual crop has implications not only for site-specific herbicide applications but also for planning future management strategies and understanding weed ecology. A controlled laboratory experiment, involving detached leaves, was conducted to investigate the potential to discriminate two crop and five weed species using hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing. Stepwise discriminant function analyses showed that reflectance in the visible and “red-edge” regions of the spectrum were consistently required for species discrimination. The seven species were correctly identified 90 and 89% of the time using the hyperspectral and multispectral data, respectively, and the classification rules derived from discriminant function analyses. Errant species prediction with the hyperspectral data resulted in a grass being predicted as a grass and a broadleaf as a broadleaf. However, for multispectral data, incorrect classifications were more serious because errant predictions sometimes resulted in a grass being classified as a broadleaf and vice-versa. Further studies using plants at a variety of growth stages, from a variety of environments, and at the canopy level are warranted.

Field trials were conducted in 1997 and 1998 at two locations in Israel to evaluate the efficacy of imazapic applied postemergence (POST) to sunflower for broomrape control under irrigated and nonirrigated conditions. Two sequential treatments of imazapic at 1.5 followed by (FB) 3.0, 3.0 FB 4.5, or 4.5 FB 6.0 g ai/ha on sunflower plants 12 ± 3 and 55 ± 5 cm tall, respectively, reduced sunflower broomrape throughout the growing season under irrigated and nonirrigated conditions. Sunflower growth was not affected by imazapic treatments. It was confirmed, in accordance with an earlier report, that when sequential treatments of imazapic included an application at the sunflower inflorescence developmental stage, the herbicide decreased seed yield in proportion to the applied rate.

Five field experiments were conducted at two locations in Virginia during 1988–89 to evaluate DPX-V9360 and CGA-136872 for postemergence control of johnsongrass in field corn grown under no-till and conventional conditions. DPX-V9360 at rates of 35 (except in no-till plots), 52, and 69 g ai ha-1 applied to 8-leaf johnsongrass was 88 to 98% effective in 1988. CGA-136872 at 25, 49, and 99 g ha-1 was 80% effective at the highest rate. Applications of these herbicides to 6-leaf johnsongrass resulted in 69% or less control. DPX-V9360 at 35, 52, and 69 g ha-1 and CGA-136872 at 20 and 40 g ha-1 applied to johnsongrass up to 48 cm in height provided 77 to 97% control at 7 WAT3 in an excellent stand of conventionally planted corn during 1989. Crop yields were more than doubled with herbicide treatments relative to yields in control plots. At a second location where crop damage caused by other factors resulted in a weak stand, DPX-V9360 provided 61 to 96% control compared to 29 to 56% control with CGA-136872.

In northern U.S. vegetable cropping systems, attempts at no-till (NT) production have generally failed because of poor crop establishment and delayed crop maturity. Strip tillage (ST) minimizes these problems by targeting tillage to the zone where crops are planted while maintaining untilled zones between crop rows, which foster improvements in soil quality. ST has been shown to maintain crop yields while reducing energy use and protecting soils in vegetable crops, including sweet corn, winter squash, snap bean, carrot, and cole crops. Despite potential benefits of ST, weed management remains an important obstacle to widespread adoption. Increased adoption of ST in cropping systems for which effective, low-cost herbicides are either limited (e.g., most vegetable crops) or prohibited (e.g., organic systems) will require integration of multiple cultural, biological, and mechanical approaches targeting weak points in weed life cycles. Weed population dynamics under ST are more complex than under either full-width, conventional tillage (CT) or NT because weed propagules—as well as factors influencing them—can move readily between zones. For example, the untilled zone in ST may provide a refuge for seed predators or a source of slowly mineralized nitrogen, which affects weed seed mortality and germination in the tilled zone. Greater understanding of such interzonal interactions may suggest manipulations to selectively suppress weeds while promoting crop growth in ST systems. Previous studies and recent experiences in ST vegetable cropping systems suggest a need to develop weed management strategies that target distinct zones while balancing crop and soil management tradeoffs. For example, in untilled zones, optimal management may consist of weed-suppressive cover crop mulching, combined with nitrogen exclusion and high-residue cultivation as needed. In contrast, weed management in the tilled zone may benefit from innovations in precision cultivation and flame-weeding technologies. These short-term strategies will benefit from longer-term approaches, including tillage-rotation, crop rotation, and cover cropping strategies, aimed at preventing seed production, promoting seed predation and decay, and preventing buildup of problematic perennial weeds. However, a concerted research effort focused on understanding weed populations as well as testing and refining integrated weed management strategies will be necessary before ST is likely to be widely adopted in vegetable cropping systems without increased reliance on herbicides.

Tropical spiderwort has recently become the most troublesome weed in Georgia cotton. Most of Georgia's cotton is glyphosate resistant (GR), and glyphosate is only marginally effective on tropical spiderwort. An experiment was conducted at four locations to determine tropical spiderwort control in GR cotton by 27 herbicide systems. Treatments consisted of three early-postemergence over-the-top (POT) herbicide options and nine late–postemergence-directed (LPD) options arranged factorially. Glyphosate POT controlled tropical spiderwort only 53% 21 d after treatment (DAT). Glyphosate plus pyrithiobac or S-metolachlor controlled tropical spiderwort 60 and 80%, respectively. Pyrithiobac improved control of emerged spiderwort, whereas S-metolachlor provided residual control. Pooled over POT treatments, glyphosate LPD controlled tropical spiderwort 70% 21 DAT. Dimethipin mixed with glyphosate did not improve control. Carfentrazone, diuron, or flumioxazin mixed with glyphosate LPD improved control 9 to 15%. MSMA and MSMA plus flumioxazin were 8 and 19% more effective than glyphosate LPD. At time of cotton harvest, systems without residual herbicides at LPD controlled tropical spiderwort 42 to 45% compared with 64 to 76% with LPD treatments that included diuron or flumioxazin.

A field study was conducted to determine the combined effects of row spacing, plant density, and herbicides on weed management and dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) yield. In weed-free dry bean, a reduction in row spacing from 69 to 23 cm increased yield by 19% and an increase in density from 20 to 50 plants/m2 increased yield by 17%. In the presence of weeds, narrow rows and high plant densities increased dry bean yield, but without herbicides, yields remained low. However, when combined with herbicides, narrow-row and high-density production practices resulted in better weed control and higher dry bean yield than that attained in a wide-row and low-density production system. Herbicide combinations, often at reduced rates, controlled weeds as well or better than the full rate of any individual herbicide. Ethalfluralin applied preplant incorporated followed by reduced rates of imazethapyr or bentazon postemergence (POST) consistently controlled weeds. Imazamox exhibited the potential to provide a total POST weed control option in dry bean production. Information gained in this study will be used to develop improved weed management programs appropriate for either wide- or narrow-row dry bean production systems.

A field experiment was conducted in Boone and Callaway counties in Missouri in 2010 and 2011 to investigate herbicide programs for the management of summer annual grass and broadleaf weeds in soybean resistant to 2,4-D and glufosinate. Results revealed that the addition of 0.56, 0.84, or 1.12 kg ha−1 2,4-D (amine) to either or both POST applications of glufosinate in a two-pass POST herbicide program increased control of common waterhemp compared to two POST applications of glufosinate alone. Similar levels of common cocklebur, giant foxtail, large crabgrass, and barnyardgrass control were achieved with any of the two-pass POST programs that contained 2,4-D compared to two-pass POST programs containing glufosinate alone. Similar control of these species was also achieved with the inclusion of 2,4-D in either the first or second pass of glufosinate. Two-pass programs resulted in the highest levels of weed control (90%). Annual grass and broadleaf weed control was as much as 59% lower when one-pass POST herbicide programs were compared to PRE followed by (fb) POST or two-pass POST programs. However, one-pass POST programs were sufficient to obtain exceptional control of common cocklebur and giant foxtail. Across all site years, soybean yields ranged from 2,680 to 3,100 kg ha−1 for all herbicide treatments, but did not differ statistically. Overall, results from these experiments indicate that compared to glufosinate alone, PRE fb POST or two-pass POST herbicide programs that incorporate 2,4-D amine with glufosinate in 2,4-D–resistant soybean enhance control of common waterhemp, while providing similar levels of control of other summer annual grass and broadleaf weeds.

Cogongrass [Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv. # IMPCY] is an aggressive, pernicious, rhizomatous perennial in the Poaceae (Graminae). It is native to tropical and subtropical areas of the eastern hemisphere. Introductions of cogongrass into the southeastern United States have been tracked to several separate sources, both accidental and intentional, in southern Alabama, southern Mississippi, and Florida. It was found to be unacceptable for use as a forage and in erosion control. Cogongrass is a highly variable species and has adapted to a variety of environmental conditions in its native and introduced range. Today cogongrass infests 200 million ha in Asia, several thousand ha in the Southeastern United States, and over 500 million ha worldwide. It has been reported to be a weed problem in many annual and perennial crops. In addition to competing for light, water and nutrients, cogongrass interference is caused by alleopathy and physical injury when rhizome apices penetrate crop roots, bulbs, and tubers. Holm et al. designated cogongrass as the world's seventh worst weed.

Field experiments were conducted in 2013 and 2014 in Jackson, TN, to evaluate the efficacy of integrating cover crops and POST herbicides in corn to control glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth. Crimson clover and hairy vetch were planted in the fall and accumulated greater than 1,600 kg ha−1 aboveground biomass by time of termination. Crimson clover and hairy vetch provided 62% and 58% Palmer amaranth control 14 d before application, respectively. POST herbicide treatments of glyphosate + S-metolachlor + mesotrione + atrazine, thiencarbazone-methyl + tembotrione + atrazine, and glyphosate + atrazine were applied when Palmer amaranth reached 15 cm tall. The herbicide treatments provided greater than 95% control of Palmer amaranth 28 d after application. In addition to Palmer amaranth suppression, corn was taller at V5 and V7 following a hairy vetch cover crop. Hairy vetch and crimson clover residues provided early season weed suppression because of biomass accumulation. Palmer amaranth in the nontreated control plots reached 15 cm 4 and 3 d ahead of the cover-treated plots in 2013 and 2014, respectively. This could potentially increase POST herbicide-application flexibility for producers. Results of this trial also suggest that cover crops alone are not a means of season-long control of GR Palmer amaranth. From a herbicide resistance-management perspective, the integration of cover crops with herbicide mixtures that incorporate multiple sites of action should aid in mitigating the further selection of herbicide resistance in Palmer amaranth.

Yellow hawkweed infests permanent upland pastures and forest meadows in northern Idaho. Conventional surveys to determine infestations of this weed are not practical. A charge coupled device with spectral filters mounted in an airplane was used to obtain digital images (1 m resolution) of flowering yellow hawkweed. Supervised classification of the digital images predicted more area infested by yellow hawkweed than did unsupervised classification. Where yellow hawkweed was the dominant ground cover species, infestations were detectable with high accuracy from digital images. Moderate yellow hawkweed infestation detection was unreliable, and areas having less than 20% yellow hawkweed cover were not detected.

Experiments conducted over three years compared weed cover and grain yields in corn which received cultivation alone, herbicide alone, and treatments combining mechanical and chemical weed control. Weed cover averaged 30% with cultivation alone compared to 9% for the other treatments. Grain yields were 7% lower in one year. In the cultivation-alone treatments the rolling cultivator was less effective in controlling weeds than the shovel/sweep cultivator. In-row weed cover was greater than between-row weed cover with cultivation alone. With banded herbicide plus cultivation, in and between-row weed cover was the same. Weed cover and grain yields following banded herbicide plus cultivation were equivalent to broadcast herbicide with or without cultivation.

Seedling emergence was characterized for five weeds that infest summer annual crops in the central Great Plains as affected by crop canopy or tillage. The study was established in winter wheat stubble between 1987 and 1990, with seedling emergence recorded weekly between April 1 and November 1. Kochia emerged primarily from early April to late June, whereas green foxtail, wild-proso millet, and redroot pigweed began emerging in late May and continued until August. Volunteer wheat emerged throughout the growing season. Tillage did not affect the emergence pattern of any species, but the numbers of kochia, volunteer wheat, and green foxtail seedlings were increased in no-till. Conversely, wild-proso millet emergence was greater with tillage. Only volunteer wheat's emergence was affected by crop canopy, as fall emergence of volunteer wheat was more than three times greater in corn than in proso millet.

Field experiments were conducted in 2010 and 2011 at a Mclean County, IL seed corn production field where resistance to foliar-applied 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitors was confirmed in waterhemp. Corn herbicides were applied to the soil at 1 and 2 times (1× and 2×, respectively) the recommended field use rate, while soybean herbicides were applied only at 1× the recommended rate. Waterhemp control and density were determined 30 and 60 d after treatment (DAT). In corn, 1× rates of mesotrione, safened and unsafened isoxaflutole formulations, atrazine, and S-metolachlor provided less than 70% control 30 DAT, while control with acetochlor was greater than 80%. One and 2× rates of acetochlor and 2× rates of mesotrione and unsafened isoxaflutole provided the greatest reduction of waterhemp density across years. At 30 DAT in soybean, sulfentrazone, flumioxazin, metribuzin, and pyroxasulfone provided the highest levels of waterhemp control (84 to 92%), as well as the greatest reduction in waterhemp density both years. A dose–response experiment with soil-applied mesotrione was performed under controlled greenhouse conditions using three waterhemp populations: MCR15 (seed collected from the McLean Co. site), NH41 (progeny obtained from the McLean Co. population by an additional generation of mesotrione selection in the greenhouse), and a sensitive (S). Emergence counts 21 DAT revealed higher seedling survival of MCR15 and NH41 at mesotrione rates of 105 g ha−1 or less compared with the sensitive control. Resistant-to-sensitive (R/S) ratios for NH41 and MCR15 were 12.7 and 8.8, respectively. Field results indicate the McLean Co. waterhemp population demonstrates reduced sensitivity to soil-applied HPPD-inhibiting herbicides. This is supported by greenhouse results that demonstrate reduced sensitivity to mesotrione in MCR15 and NH41.

Intensive selection pressure from repeated use of propanil and quinclorac led to the evolution of herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass biotypes. Twenty-two composite field samples were tested for level of resistance in 2002 and 2003, and field studies were conducted at the Rice Research and Extension Center, Stuttgart, AR, in 2002 and 2003 to evaluate alternative rice herbicides to control propanil-resistant (PR) and quinclorac-resistant (QR) barnyardgrass. Of the 22 composite samples, four were PR (30 to 40% control); four had a mixed population of PR, QR, and susceptible (S) barnyardgrass; and two had multiple resistance to propanil and quinclorac (P/QR), with control from propanil of 15 to 30% and control from quinclorac of 5 to 10%. ‘Wells’ rice was used where conventional herbicide programs were evaluated, and Clearfield rice ‘CL-161’ (imidazolinone-resistant) was used for herbicide programs involving imazethapyr. All PR and QR barnyardgrass were controlled > 90% by alternative herbicides, including all preemergence (PRE) and delayed preemergence (DPRE) treatments. By 56 d after emergence (DAE), cyhalofop or fenoxaprop applied to two- to three-leaf barnyardgrass (early postemergence [EPOST]), followed by (fb) a preflood application, controlled barnyardgrass > 93%. Pendimethalin controlled PR barnyardgrass 21 DAE, but not all season long. In contrast, imazethapyr in Clearfield rice controlled all grass weeds 100% all season long. Midpostemergence (MPOST) bispyribac application at the four- to five-leaf stage also provided season-long control of all barnyardgrass biotypes (> 88%, 56 DAE). Rice yields ranged from 5,300 to 5,700 kg ha−1 in conventional weed-control treatments and from 2,800 to 5,000 kg ha−1 in imazethapyr-treated plots. Nontreated plots yielded 1,500 kg ha−1.

Field studies were conducted near Clayton, Lewiston, and Rocky Mount, NC in 2005 to evaluate weed control and cotton response to preemergence treatments of pendimethalin alone or in a tank mixture with fomesafen, postemergence treatments of glufosinate applied alone or in a tank mixture with S-metolachlor, and POST-directed treatments of glufosinate in a tank mixture with flumioxazin or prometryn. Excellent weed control (> 91%) was observed where at least two applications were made in addition to glufosinate early postemergence (EPOST). A reduction in control of common lambsquarters (8%), goosegrass (20%), large crabgrass (18%), Palmer amaranth (13%), and pitted morningglory (9%) was observed when residual herbicides were not included in PRE or mid-POST programs. No differences in weed control or cotton lint yield were observed between POST-directed applications of glufosinate with flumioxazin compared to prometryn. Weed control programs containing three or more herbicide applications resulted in similar cotton lint yields at Clayton and Lewiston, and Rocky Mount showed the greatest variability with up to 590 kg/ha greater lint yield where fomesafen was included PRE compared to pendimethalin applied alone. Similarly, an increase in cotton lint yields of up to 200 kg/ha was observed where S-metolachlor was included mid-POST when compared to glufosinate applied alone, showing the importance of residual herbicides to help maintain optimal yields. Including additional modes of action with residual activity preemergence and postemergence provides a longer period of weed control, which helps maintain cotton lint yields.

Glyphosate and paraquat herbicide drift injury to crops may substantially reduce growth or yield. Determining the type and degree of injury is of importance to a producer. This research was conducted to determine whether remote sensing could be used to identify and quantify herbicide injury to crops. Soybean and corn plants were grown in 3.8-L pots to the five- to seven-leaf stage, at which time, applications of nonselective herbicides were made. Visual injury estimates were made, and hyperspectral reflectance data were recorded 1, 4, and 7 d after application (DAA). Several analysis techniques including multiple indices, signature amplitude (SA) with spectral bands as features, and wavelet analysis were used to distinguish between herbicide-treated and nontreated plants. Classification accuracy using SA analysis of paraquat injury on soybean was better than 75% for both 1/2- and 1/8× rates at 1, 4, and 7 DAA. Classification accuracy of paraquat injury on corn was better than 72% for the 1/2× rate at 1, 4, and 7 DAA. These data suggest that hyperspectral reflectance may be used to distinguish between healthy plants and injured plants to which herbicides have been applied; however, the classification accuracies remained at 75% or higher only when the higher rates of herbicide were applied. Applications of a 1/2× rate of glyphosate produced 55 to 81% soybean injury and 20 to 50% corn injury 4 and 7 DAA, respectively. However, using SA analysis, the moderately injured plants were indistinguishable from the uninjured controls, as represented by the low classification accuracies at the 1/8-, 1/32-, and 1/64× rates. The most promising technique for identifying drift injury was wavelet analysis, which successfully distinguished between corn plants treated with either the 1/8- or the 1/2× rates of paraquat compared with the nontreated corn plants better than 92% 1, 4, and 7 DAA. These analysis techniques, once tested and validated on field scale data, may help determine the extent and the degree of herbicide drift for making appropriate and, more importantly, timely management decisions.

Field experiments were conducted to examine the influence of spray volume on glyphosate efficacy in relation to glyphosate rate, formulation, ammonium sulfate addition, and type of sprayer nozzle. Using several grass species it was shown that glyphosate efficacy increased as spray volume decreased from 190 to 23 L/ha. To obtain equal efficacy, glyphosate rates can be reduced by at least one-third when glyphosate is applied in 23 or 47 L/ha spray volume compared with 94 or 190 L/ha. The amount of surfactant in formulated glyphosate at 35 to 140 g ae/ha rates was insufficient when glyphosate was applied in 94 or 190 L/ha spray volumes. Additional surfactant enhanced glyphosate efficacy at these rates when applied in 94 or 190 L/ha spray volume, but efficacy was still less than when applied in 23 or 47 L/ha without additional surfactant. Thus, low spray volumes maximized glyphosate efficacy primarily through high herbicide concentration in the spray deposit and reduced salts from the carrier to antagonize efficacy. Glyphosate applied in 23 L/ha spray volume with drift-reducing nozzles provided control equal to that provided by glyphosate applied with standard flat-fan nozzles. Grass control also was equal from several glyphosate formulations that contained surfactants, regardless of spray volume.

Utility adjuvants are adjuvants that are tank-mixed in the spray solution to improve the spray application process, but do not directly influence herbicide efficacy. However, by improving the spray application process, utility adjuvants can indirectly improve herbicide efficacy. There are five primary utility adjuvant types: compatibility agents, deposition agents, drift control agents (sometimes referred to as antidrift agents or drift retardants), defoaming agents, and water conditioning agents, and three secondary utility adjuvant types: acidifying agents, buffering agents, and colorants (dye markers). Herbicides can react either physically or chemically with other spray mixture components to form an unsprayable mixture. Compatibility agents prevent these reactions from occurring. Drift control agents and deposition agents increase the amount of herbicide deposited on target surfaces. The primary function of drift control agents is to reduce the amount of spray solution that moves off-target. Indirectly, the amount of herbicide reaching target surfaces can be increased. A defoaming agent will reduce or prevent foam produced in the spray mixture. Ions in the spray solution can interact with various herbicides, decreasing efficacy. Water conditioning agents will counteract the effect of the ions on herbicides. Water conditioning agents must be added before the herbicide to prevent herbicide–ion interaction. Acidifying and buffering agents function in a similar fashion, reducing or increasing spray solution pH. A buffering agent will maintain a pH range, whereas an acidifying agent will not. Colorants are dyes that are added to the spray solution to produce a visible color on the sprayed area to assist the applicator in applying the herbicide.

In Australia, most wheat is sown in a no-till system without prior cultivation where herbicides are applied prior to sowing and incorporated by the planter. Trifluralin has been the most widely used PRE herbicide to control rigid ryegrass. The objective of this research was to determine crop safety and efficacy of alternative mechanism of action PRE herbicides for rigid ryegrass control in no-till wheat production. Pyroxasulfone achieved 98% control with PRE applications. The alternative PRE herbicides tested alone and in mixtures occasionally resulted in a significant reduction in wheat emergence but not crop yield. Trifluralin treatments failed at sites having trifluralin-resistant rigid ryegrass. Pyroxasulfone and prosulfocarb plus S-metolachlor were effective for control of rigid ryegrass across all trials with control ranging from 64 to 94%. This research demonstrated that PRE applications of herbicides other than trifluralin such as pyroxasulfone and prosulfocarb plus S-metolachlor can be safely and effectively used to control rigid ryegrass in no-till wheat.

S-Metolachlor is commonly used by soybean and cotton growers, especially with POST treatments for overlapping residuals, to obtain season-long control of glyphosate- and acetolactate synthase (ALS)–resistant Palmer amaranth. In Crittenden County, AR, reports of Palmer amaranth escapes following S-metolachlor treatment were first noted at field sites near Crawfordsville and Marion in 2016. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to confirm S-metolachlor resistance and to test for cross-resistance to other very-long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA)–inhibiting herbicides in Palmer amaranth accessions from Crawfordsville and Marion. Palmer amaranth control in the field (soil <3% organic matter) 14 d after treatment (DAT) was ≥94% with a 1× rate of acetochlor (1,472 g ai ha–1; emulsifiable concentrate formulation) and dimethenamid-P (631 g ai ha–1). However, S-metolachlor at 1,064 g ai ha–1 provided only 76% control, which was not significantly different from the 1/2× and 1/4× rates of dimethenamid-P and acetochlor (66% to 85%). In the greenhouse, Palmer amaranth accessions from Marion and Crawfordsville were 9.8 and 8.3 times more resistant to S-metolachlor compared with two susceptible accessions based on LD50 values obtained from dose–response experiments. Two-thirds and 1.5 times S-metolachlor at 1,064 g ha–1 were the estimated rates required to obtain 90% mortality of the Crawfordsville and Marion accessions, respectively. Data collected from the field and greenhouse confirm that these accessions have evolved a low level of resistance to S-metolachlor. In an agar-based assay, the level of resistance in the Marion accession was significantly reduced in the presence of a glutathione S-transferase (GST) inhibitor, suggesting that GSTs are the probable resistance mechanism. With respect to other VLCFA-inhibiting herbicides, Marion and Crawfordsville accessions were not cross-resistant to acetochlor, dimethenamid-P, or pyroxasulfone. However, both accessions, based on LD50 values obtained from greenhouse dose–response experiments, exhibited reduced sensitivity (1.5- to 3.6-fold) to the tested VLCFA-inhibiting herbicides.
