Palmer amaranth accessions were collected from 21 fields in northeastern Arkansas in the fall of 2006 to determine if they differed in response to increasing doses of glyphosate and to determine the survival frequency following treatment with the label rate (870 g ae/ha). The herbicide dose required to kill 50% of individuals in an accession (LD50) ranged from 41 to 339 g/ha glyphosate, with most accessions responding similarly to glyphosate. The AR18 and AR19 were the least-sensitive accessions, with LD50 rates of 312 and 339 g/ha glyphosate, respectively. The mean survival frequency was 2.2% across all accessions when 870 g/ha glyphosate was applied to five- to seven-leaf plants. Sixteen of the accessions had at least one plant survive glyphosate at 870 g/ha. AR18 and AR19 accessions had a survival frequency of 6.3 and 11.8%, respectively. Following an additional cycle of selection with glyphosate, 44.3% of the progeny from the AR19 accession survived glyphosate at 870 g/ha, and its LD50 value significantly increased to 646 g/ha glyphosate. This research shows that there is a low percentage of Palmer amaranth plants currently present in production fields throughout northeastern Arkansas that are capable of surviving a single glyphosate application at the labeled rate and that further selection with glyphosate can increase the frequency of survival.

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) along long distances of railroad right-of-ways is often treated with the least expensive herbicides available that only control top growth. The objective of this research was to evaluate flea beetles, Aphthona nigriscutis and a mixed population of A. czwalinae and A. lacertosa, for establishment and potential to reduce leafy spurge infestations along railroad right-of-ways. In separate experiments, both Aphthona species established the first year following release, and the rate of spread was similar regardless of the initial number released. Aphthona nigriscutis reduced leafy spurge approximately 65% up to 16 m from the release point by 3 to 5 yr after release. The mixed population of A. czwalinae and A. lacertosa reduced leafy spurge density over 95% within 4 yr of release. Biological control is an alternative to chemical control for leafy spurge along railroad right-of-ways, and establishment at these sites could facilitate biological control agent movement into remote areas.

Preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) herbicides registered for large crabgrass control were evaluated for control of Japanese stiltgrass, an invasive, nonnative C4 annual grass. Benefin plus oryzalin, dithiopyr, isoxaben plus trifluralin, oryzalin, oxadiazon, pendimethalin, prodiamine, or trifluralin applied PRE controlled Japanese stiltgrass 87% or greater 8 wk after treatment. Benefin plus trifluralin, metolachlor, or napropamide applied PRE were less effective (78, 39, and 59% control, respectively). Single POST applications of clethodim, fenoxaprop-P, fluazifop-P, or sethoxydim controlled Japanese stiltgrass 50 to 88%. These herbicides applied twice provided 82 to 99% control. Single POST applications of glufosinate controlled Japanese stiltgrass 82 to 85%, whereas two applications provided complete control. Single POST applications of glyphosate were just as effective as two applications in controlling Japanese stiltgrass. Dithiopyr, MSMA, and quinclorac applied POST were ineffective on Japanese stiltgrass. All PRE and POST herbicides tested were equally or more effective on Japanese stiltgrass than on large crabgrass, with the exception of metolachlor applied PRE and dithiopyr or quinclorac applied POST.

Four herbicide treatments applied in the spring or fall were evaluated for leafy spurge control and forage production in eastern and western North Dakota during a 5-yr experiment. All treatments gradually reduced the leafy spurge infestation at both locations except 2,4-D at 2.2 kg ae ha-1 applied annually in the spring or fall and picloram plus 2,4-D at 0.28 plus 1.1 kg ae ha-1 applied annually in the fall. The most cost effective treatment was picloram plus 2,4-D applied annually in the spring which provided a net return of $284 and $108/ha in eastern and western North Dakota, respectively, and averaged 80% leafy spurge control. Picloram at 2.2 kg ha-1 was reapplied only when leafy spurge control declined to less than 70% and provided a net return of $96/ha in eastern North Dakota, but a net loss of $235/ha in western North Dakota. Dicamba at 9 kg ae ha-1 was applied up to four times to maintain 70% control with an average net loss of $458/ha. Total potential production and value of forage will determine if a specific treatment is cost effective in any one location.

Weed-wipers may provide effective weed control while minimizing the application of herbicide to nontarget species in rangeland and pasture. To date, few herbicides are recommended for use in weed wiping systems. We assessed Canada thistle and non–Canada thistle herbage responses in two experiments in pastures, the first examining wiped glyphosate, the second comparing glyphosate with three broadleaf herbicides at cost-equivalent concentrations [on a volume to volume (v/v) dilution basis]. In both studies, wiping with a glyphosate solution (33% v/v, equivalent to a one to two dilution ratio of herbicide to water) resulted in lower Canada thistle density and biomass than check plots, with control lasting up to 2 yr. However, significant reductions in grass biomass also occurred and were associated with an increase in the abundance of weedy annual forbs. In contrast, wiping with a concentrated solution of clopyralid (2% v/v), picloram plus 2,4-D (20% v/ v), or 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba (24% v/v), resulted in similar levels of Canada thistle control but no reduction in grass biomass. Despite direct application of herbicides to tall weeds, clover species in mixed stands were injured. In grass-dominated pastures, wiping with broadleaf herbicides was superior to nonselective glyphosate because the former more effectively balanced Canada thistle control with the retention of grass production.

Data from surveys are used to help quantitatively diagnose the relative importance of chemical and nonchemical management practices, identify weed problems, and provide potential solutions. However, to our knowledge, such surveys have not been conducted in Argentina. In 2016, advisors and crop producers from cropping areas across Argentina were surveyed through email with the objectives to identify the main weed species problems and assess the use of chemical and nonchemical weed management practices in different crop production areas in Argentina. Fleabane, pigweed, johnsongrass, fingergrass, goosegrass, barnyardgrass, and ryegrass were considered the most important weeds. More than 53% of the producers used only chemical options; 86% used chemical fallow (i.e., keeping weed free with chemical application); 62% used full herbicide rates; 46% used proper herbicide timing; 41% used multiple modes of action; and 32% used rotation of herbicide modes of action. The main nonchemical practices used were crop rotation (45%); avoiding seed production during (31%) and after (25%) the crop cycle; narrow row spacing (19%); and cultivars with greater competitive ability (18%). Less than 15% of the people surveyed used increased crop densities or altered date of sowing. There is a high dependence on chemical control in the main crops grown in Argentina. Extension efforts are needed to emphasize the importance of integrated weed management.

The citrus yield in Brazil is not ranked among the best in the world, potentially due to inadequate management by citrus growers. The low adoption of conservation agriculture (CA) techniques and the improper application of herbicides are also well-known problems. Thus, this study evaluated the use of CA techniques, and two Urochloa species (ruzi grass and signal grass) were used as cover crops. Two different types of mowers (ecological, EM; conventional, CM) launched the mowed biomass into different positions within a young Tahiti acid lime orchard (up to four years old). In addition, the integration of glyphosate into this management system was evaluated, with (GLY) and without (NO GLY) glyphosate application. This experiment was conducted across three growing seasons (2011-2014), in Mogi Mirim, São Paulo State, Brazil. The cover crop biomass yields and the effects of the mowing treatments, weed density, vegetative growth and fruit yields of the Tahiti acid lime trees were evaluated. In terms of major results, signal grass produced higher biomass yield values (up to 64%) than ruzi grass; EM promoted higher mowed biomass values in the intra-row (up to 5.1 ton ha−1, 9.0 times higher than CM), and a higher canopy volume (up to 33% than CM). These results were enhanced when ruzi grass was associated with the EM (56% lower weed density; 126% higher fruit yield than CM) and with GLY (52% higher fruit yield than NO GLY); and EM with GLY (43% lesser weed density and 107% higher fruit yield than NO GLY). Overall, ruzi grass was a good cover crop because it provided less competition for the citrus trees, EM provided a mulch layer in the intra-row of the citrus trees, and associated with GLY, these approaches could provide options for an integrated and more sustainable weed management, primarily for young Tahiti acid lime orchards.

Glyphosate-resistant (GR) and multiple herbicide–resistant (groups 2 and 9) Canada fleabane have been confirmed in 30 and 23 counties in Ontario, respectively. The widespread incidence of herbicide-resistant Canada fleabane highlights the importance of developing integrated weed management strategies. One strategy is to suppress Canada fleabane using cover crops. Seventeen different cover crop monocultures or polycultures were seeded after winter wheat harvest in late summer to determine GR Canada fleabane suppression in corn grown the following growing season. All cover crop treatments seeded after wheat harvest suppressed GR Canada fleabane in corn the following year. At 4 wk after cover crop emergence (WAE), estimated cover crop ground cover ranged from 31% to 68%, a density of 124 to 638 plants m–2, and a range of biomass from 29 to 109 g m–2, depending on cover crop species. All of the cover crop treatments suppressed GR Canada fleabane in corn grown the following growing season from May to September compared to the no cover crop control. Among treatments evaluated, annual ryegrass (ARG), crimson clover (CC)/ARG, oilseed radish (OSR)/CC/ARG, and OSR/CC/cereal rye (CR) were the best treatments for the suppression of GR Canada fleabane in corn. ARG alone or in combination with CC provided the most consistent GR Canada fleabane suppression, density reduction, and biomass reduction in corn. Grain corn yields were not affected by the use of the cover crops evaluated for Canada fleabane suppression.

Five experiments were conducted during 2001 and 2002 in North Carolina to evaluate peanut injury and pod yield when glyphosate was applied to 10 to 15 cm diameter peanut plants at rates ranging from 9 to 1,120 g ai/ha. Shikimic acid accumulation was determined in three of the five experiments. Visual foliar injury (necrosis and chlorosis) was noted 7 d after treatment (DAT) when glyphosate was applied at 18 g/ha or higher. Glyphosate at 280 g/ha or higher significantly injured the peanut plant and reduced pod yield. Shikimic acid accumulation was negatively correlated with visual injury and pod yield. The presence of shikimic acid can be detected using a leaf tissue assay, which is an effective diagnostic tool for determining exposure of peanut to glyphosate 7 DAT.

Eight POST herbicides were evaluated alone or in various mixtures for spiny amaranth control in peanut in 1991 and 1992. Acifluorfen alone or in combination with bentazon, lactofen alone, or 2,4-DB alone applied late POST controlled spiny amaranth more than 80% at an early season rating. Lactofen applied early POST and 2,4-DB applied late POST controlled more than 90% late season. Imazethapyr and AC 263,222 controlled 72 to 90% of spiny amaranth, whereas bentazon and pyridate failed to provide adequate control.

The past 50 yr of advances in weed recognition technologies have poised site-specific weed control (SSWC) on the cusp of requisite performance for large-scale production systems. The technology offers improved management of diverse weed morphology over highly variable background environments. SSWC enables the use of nonselective weed control options, such as lasers and electrical weeding, as feasible in-crop selective alternatives to herbicides by targeting individual weeds. This review looks at the progress made over this half-century of research and its implications for future weed recognition and control efforts; summarizing advances in computer vision techniques and the most recent deep convolutional neural network (CNN) approaches to weed recognition. The first use of CNNs for plant identification in 2015 began an era of rapid improvement in algorithm performance on larger and more diverse datasets. These performance gains and subsequent research have shown that the variability of large-scale cropping systems is best managed by deep learning for in-crop weed recognition. The benefits of deep learning and improved accessibility to open-source software and hardware tools has been evident in the adoption of these tools by weed researchers and the increased popularity of CNN-based weed recognition research. The field of machine learning holds substantial promise for weed control, especially the implementation of truly integrated weed management strategies. Whereas previous approaches sought to reduce environmental variability or manage it with advanced algorithms, research in deep learning architectures suggests that large-scale, multi-modal approaches are the future for weed recognition.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate shoot number, shoot weight, and root weight reduction of yellow and purple nutsedge to three placement levels (soil, foliar, and soil + foliar applied) and four herbicide treatments (CGA-362622, imazaquin, MSMA, and imazaquin + MSMA). Soil-applied CGA-362622 reduced shoot number, shoot weight, and root weight greater than foliar-applied CGA-362622. Foliar-applied imazaquin and soil-applied MSMA achieved little reduction in measured variables compared with the nontreated control. Foliar-applied imazaquin and soil-applied MSMA reduced shoot number, shoot weight, and root weight less than imazaquin + MSMA applied in a similar manner. Averaged over placement levels, imazaquin reduced shoot weight of yellow nutsedge greater than purple nutsedge. Averaged over herbicide treatments, soil-applied treatments were more effective in reducing purple nutsedge shoot number, whereas foliar-applied treatments were more effective in reducing yellow nutsedge shoot number.

The current state of registration requirements for mobility assessments of pesticides is described and the various uses for mobility estimates are outlined. A survey of recent literature on mobility assessments is presented along with a suggestion for a refocus on Kd rather than KF. A proposal for a different, yet standard, more efficient approach as a replacement for the current requirements is outlined. The suggested approach could fit well within a registration package or a limited research budget as well as provide more information for model input.

New or recently introduced weeds are biological pollutants in our natural and agricultural ecosystems. Unlike chemical pollutants, new weeds left unchecked often proliferate and pose problems that may not become apparent until eradication is too expensive or impractical. Management strategies for weeds should include: 1. prevention (from entering foreign commerce); 2. exclusion (detection of weed contaminants in imported products at ports of entry); 3. detection, containment, and eradication of incipient infestations; and 4. perpetual control (of widespread species that cannot otherwise be addressed). Appropriate legislative authority, modern weed technology, funding, and a renewed commitment to the concept of prevention are needed to prevent the introduction of new weeds. A national initiative to prevent the establishment of new weeds would be beneficial by saving on future losses and perpetual control costs. Actions taken now will prevent the continued introduction and spread of new weeds in the United States.

Jointed goatgrass, downy brome, and horseweed are increasingly troublesome winter annual weeds during fallow periods in conservation-tillage systems in the southern Great Plains. These experiments determined the optimum weed size, vigor, and minimum herbicide rate required for 95% or better control of these weeds on fallow land. Jointed goatgrass and downy brome were controlled best when plants were 10 cm or less tall and growing vigorously at time of treatment. Horseweed was controlled best when plants were 30 cm tall and growing vigorously. Based on local retail and application costs and assuming optimum conditions for control, the two most economical herbicide treatments that controlled each weed 95% or better were: jointed goatgrass, clethodim at 250 g ai/ha and glyphosate + 2,4-D at 249 + 479 g ae/ha; downy brome, quizalofop at 18 g ai/ha and glyphosate + 2,4-D at 582 + 950 g ae/ha; and horseweed, 2,4-D at 560 g ae/ha and metsulfuron at 5 g ai/ha.

Field, greenhouse, and laboratory studies were conducted to examine the potential for antagonism of postemergence graminicides when tank-mixed with cloransulam and to determine the role of herbicide absorption and translocation in observed antagonistic responses. Cloransulam antagonized annual grass control with aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicides fluazifop-P, quizalofop, and the prepackaged formulation of fluazifop-P plus fenoxaprop. Cloransulam did not affect annual grass control with the cyclohexandiones clethodim and sethoxydim. In the greenhouse, increasing the rate of the graminicides was a more effective strategy for overcoming antagonism for quizalofop than for fluazifop-P or fluazifop-P plus fenoxaprop, and success was species dependent. Annual grass control with clethodim, sethoxydim, and glyphosate was not adversely affected by tank mixtures with cloransulam. Control of large rhizome johnsongrass was initially reduced when cloransulam was mixed with sethoxydim, fluazifop-P plus fenoxaprop, or quizalofop. By 6 wk after treatment, control of rhizome johnsongrass was antagonized only when cloransulam was mixed with sethoxydim. Rainfall within 1.5 h of application reduced johnsongrass control with glyphosate and sethoxydim but did not affect activity of the other herbicides. Absorption of 14C-fluazifop-P and 14C-quizalofop into broadleaf signalgrass was not affected by cloransulam 6 or 24 h after treatment. Translocation of 14C-fluazifop-P to broadleaf signalgrass shoot tissue above and below the treated leaf was decreased when fluazifop-P was combined with cloransulam. Translocation of quizalofop was not affected by cloransulam.

Weed control and cotton yield with a herbicide program of sethoxydim and DPX-PE350 applied postemergence over-the-top was compared with that of a standard herbicide program of trifluralin applied PPI plus fluometuron applied PRE plus methazole and MSMA applied postemergence-directed. Control of pitted and entireleaf morningglory, smooth pigweed, and prickly sida was similar with the postemergence over-the-top program and the standard herbicide program when DPX-PE350 was applied to cotton in the V2 or V4 growth stages. Less weed control and lower yield were observed when DPX-PE350 was applied to V6-stage cotton. Good control of annual grasses was obtained with all herbicide programs.

Perennial pepperweed is an invasive weed spreading rapidly throughout a wide range of habitats in the western United States. This study was designed to test whether integrating early season mowing with a systemic herbicide application would improve the control of perennial pepperweed. Experiments were conducted within three different environments including high desert, roadside, and floodplain areas. In treatments not mowed, chlorsulfuron at 0.104 kg ai/ha reduced perennial pepperweed biomass and density by 100%, whereas applications of 2,4-D at 2.11 kg ae/ha and glyphosate at 3.33 kg ae/ha were inconsistent and did not provide effective control. Mowing alone did not reduce perennial pepperweed biomass or density the following year, but mowing followed by application of a herbicide treatment to resprouting plants reduced biomass at all three sites compared with nonmowed treatments including herbicides. Among combinations of mowing and herbicides, chlorsulfuron at 0.052 kg/ha reduced perennial pepperweed biomass by >99% at all three sites, and glyphosate at 3.33 kg/ha reduced biomass by ≥80% at two sites 1 yr after applications. The effectiveness of glyphosate at 3.33 kg/ha in combination with mowing provides land managers with a valuable control option for perennial pepperweed in wetland or riparian areas where chlorsulfuron is not registered for use.

Imazaquin (Scepter) is a new, broad spectrum herbicide that is being marketed under the trademark Scepter® herbicide by American Cyanamid Co., Princeton, NJ. It can be applied preplant incorporated (PPI), preemergence (PE) or over-the-top postemergence (POST) in soybean. Crop tolerance is excellent with all methods of application. Imazaquin was tested in the United States in 1984 and 1985 under an Experimental Use Permit (EUP). Section 18 Emergency Exemptions also were granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1985 for control of sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia) in five southern states. Imazaquin was registered by the EPA for use in the United States on soybean, in March, 1986, and was sold in 23 states that year. Marketing in four additional states in 1987 was approved by the EPA in October, 1986.

In November 2004, a 29-question survey was mailed to Delaware soybean growers to determine grower perceptions of glyphosate-resistant (GR) horseweed and if glyphosate applications, GR soybean usage, and management practices had been altered in lieu of the presence of resistance. A total of 213 valid responses were received. Ninety-eight percent of respondents reported planting GR soybean at some point in the last 5 yr, with 90% reporting having planted GR soybean 3 or more years. The presence of GR horseweed on-farm was reported by 38% of the respondents and 95% of those growers with GR horseweed on-farm reported implementing one or more changes in GR soybean management. The most frequent change (66% of growers) due to resistant horseweed was the application of another herbicide with a different mode of action before planting. Forty-eight percent of growers with resistance on-farm reported a $5 to $17/ha increase to manage for GR horseweed, with 28% reporting a greater than $17/ha increase. Regardless of experience with GR horseweed, approximately 80% responded that it was worthwhile to incur additional costs now to preserve glyphosate for future use. Soybean grower reliance on glyphosate has not decreased in light of GR horseweed in Delaware. Misconceptions of timing for the selection of GR horseweed biotypes and the future availability of new herbicides with different modes of action exist within the farming community.
