Field experiments were conducted near Scottsbluff, NE, in 2001 and 2002 to compare economic aspects of glyphosate applied to different glyphosate-resistant sugar beet cultivars with that of conventional herbicide programs applied to near-equivalent, non–glyphosate-resistant conventional cultivars. Glyphosate applied two or three times at 2-wk intervals, beginning when weeds were 10 cm tall, provided excellent weed control, yield, and net economic return regardless of the glyphosate-resistant sugar beet cultivar. All conventional herbicide treatments resulted in similar net economic returns. Although the conventional sugar beet cultivars ‘HM 1640’ and ‘Beta 4546’ responded similarly to herbicide treatments with respect to sucrose content, ‘Beta 4546RR’ produced roots with 1% more sucrose than ‘HM 1640RR’. When averaged over herbicide treatments, a producer planting Beta 4546RR could afford to pay US $185/ha more for glyphosate-resistant technology as could a producer planting HM 1640RR. When averaged over cultivars and herbicide treatments, it is estimated that a producer could afford to pay an additional US $385/ha for glyphosate-resistant technology without decreasing net return.

Field studies were conducted over 4 yr to evaluate weed control and soybean injury with sulfentrazone applied preplant incorporated or preemergence alone and in combination with imazaquin, metribuzin, or cloransulam. Sulfentrazone at 280 g ai/ha controlled yellow nutsedge, common waterhemp, ivyleaf morningglory, and velvetleaf 92 to 100% 56 days after planting (DAP). At 420 g/ha, sulfentrazone controlled giant foxtail 80 to 94% 21 DAP. Sulfentrazone controlled common ragweed 17 to 93% and common cocklebur 57 to 91%. Giant foxtail, common cocklebur, and common ragweed control with sulfentrazone at lower rates was improved with the addition of metribuzin or cloransulam. Sulfentrazone caused no visual soybean injury and did not reduce yield compared with standard herbicides.

A field survey was conducted in 2007 to characterize weed populations in different turfgrass sites throughout the Klang Valley of western Peninsular Malaysia. Sites included golf course putting greens, athletic fields, sod farms, and residential lawns. Weeds present in each site were identified and the data were used to calculate frequency, distribution uniformity, density, relative abundance, and community coefficient values for each species. Seventy-nine weed species, belonging to 16 families, were found. The most species were found on residential lawns, and the fewest were found on golf course putting greens; athletic fields and sod farms ranked intermediately. A total of 19 different weed species were classified as major (relative abundance ≥ 15), and abundance rankings varied by turfgrass area. Greater kyllinga had the highest relative abundance values on athletic fields (45.5) and golf course putting greens (71.5), and the second highest value (21.7) on residential lawns. Forked fringerush and annual sedge had the greatest relative abundance values on residential lawns and sod farms, respectively. Cogongrass was reported on 15% of the residential lawns evaluated. The heterogeneity of weed species composition suggests that control strategies will vary by turfgrass use area. Quantifying weed population dynamics will help researchers delineate integrated weed management strategies to turfgrass managers in Malaysia.

Weed management can be difficult and expensive in organic agricultural systems. Because of the potentially high cost of the natural product herbicides vinegar and clove oil, their efficacy with regard to weed species growth stages needs to be determined. A further objective was to identify anatomical and morphological features of redroot pigweed and velvetleaf that influence the effectiveness of vinegar and clove oil. Research was conducted on greenhouse-grown cotyledon, two-leaf, and four-leaf redroot pigweed and velvetleaf. Dose–response treatments for vinegar included 150-, 200-, 250-, and 300-grain vinegar at 318 L/ha and at 636 L/ha. Clove oil treatments included 1.7, 3.4, 5.1, and 6.8% (v/v) dilutions of a clove oil product in water (318 L/ha), and a 1.7% (v/v) dilution in 200-grain vinegar (318 L/ha). An untreated control was included. Separate plantings of velvetleaf and pigweed were treated with vinegar or clove oil and were used to study anatomical and morphological differences between the two species. Redroot pigweed was easier to control with both products than velvetleaf. Whereas 200-grain vinegar applied at 636 L/ha provided 100% control (6 d after treatment [DAT]) and mortality (9 DAT) of two-leaf redroot pigweed, this same treatment on two-leaf velvetleaf provided only 73% control and 18% mortality. The obtuse leaf blade angle in velvetleaf moved product away from the shoot tip, whereas in pigweed, the acute leaf blade angle, deep central leaf vein, and groove on the upper side of the leaf petiole facilitated product movement toward the stem axis and shoot tip. For both species, and at all application timings, 150-grain vinegar at 636 L/ha provided control equal to that of 300-grain vinegar at 318 L/ha. As growth stage advanced, control and biomass reduction decreased and survival increased. Application timing will be critical to maximizing weed control with vinegar and clove oil.

Our purpose is to discuss the impact of alien plants on rangeland ecosystems of the Great Basin in terms of their effects on biological functions. The sagebrush/bunchgrass ranges of western North America are used as a model ecosystem for the impact of alien plants. Alien weed species have been introduced in successive waves, with the success of each new introduction dependent on how well adapted to the environment and how competitive the new weed is with those previously introduced. Annual species have been successful across extensive areas of Great Basin rangelands. Biennial and short- and long-lived perennial introductions have been restricted to much more specific habitats. Alien plants impact rangelands through stand renewal and successional processes. Alien weeds can cause such processes to be accelerated and/or truncated depending on the species and range site.

Brazilian pepper is a small evergreen tree that forms dense colonies. It was introduced for horticultural use in the United States in the early 1800s and was widely distributed in Florida in the late 1920s. Previous remote-sensing projects to detect Brazilian pepper achieved moderate success and warranted additional research using a hyperspectral sensor. Detection with remote sensing is desirable because complete access to ground survey crews is not practical. The western half of the Everglades National Park was imaged at a 5-m spatial resolution with a hyperspectral sensor by Earth Search Sciences Inc. of Kalispell, MT, on December 12, 2000, and January 10, 2001. The sensor has 128 channels and spectral resolution between 450 and 2,500 nm. The purpose of this research was to develop spectral reflectance curves for Brazilian pepper and establish the accuracy of classified images. Classified images showed that a hyperspectral sensor could detect a “pure” Brazilian pepper pixel representing the center of an infestation but not “mixed” Brazilian pepper pixels at the sparsely populated edges. To define the sparse populations, images were classified using a spatial buffer (15- to 100-m radius) based on a low–omissional error image. A 25-m buffer reduced the amount of commissional error for Brazilian pepper in mangrove-dominated forest to 8.2% and buttonwood-dominated forest to 0%. Wider buffers did not significantly improve image accuracy when compared with the 25-m buffer distance. Results indicate that removal crews using hyperspectral images will be able to reliably find the colonies of Brazilian pepper but will not be able to use the images to find isolated scattered trees.

Knowing when weed species are likely to emerge can aid in developing effective integrated weed management programs. When using nonresidual herbicides such as glyphosate for weed control, treatment timing is critical. This study characterized the emergence patterns of common lambsquarters, common sunflower, common waterhemp, eastern black nightshade, ivyleaf morningglory, shattercane, and woolly cupgrass in soybean, in relation to common glyphosate application timings. Approximately 90% or more of common lambsquarters, common sunflower, and common waterhemp seedlings emerged before the end of May, both in 2000 and 2001. Both ivyleaf morningglory and shattercane emerged from late April to mid-August, allowing these species to avoid glyphosate applications timed to prevent early-season weed competition. Avoidance through periodicity in emergence underscores the importance of integrating multiple tactics to ensure that difficult to manage weeds are not selected for in this management system.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of different initial weed densities on weed control effectiveness in no-tillage corn at two locations in North Carolina during 1994 and 1995. Different weed densities were established over a 4-year period (1989–1992) by using various weed management strategies. Resultant density levels were estimated and used to establish high and low weed density plots. Treatments applied were PRE, POST, at-planting, and an untreated control. Weed density estimates were made 37 and 57 DAP. Common lambsquarters at low densities (20 to 40 weeds/m2) was controlled with the cover crop alone, but common lambsquarters at high densities (150 to 170 weeds/m2) and redroot pigweed at any density were not controlled. POST herbicides reduced weed densities as well as the PRE herbicides, regardless of initial weed densities.

Field studies were conducted in central Missouri and central Kansas to evaluate the crop tolerance and efficacy of various combinations of atrazine, flufenacet + isoxaflutole, flumetsulam + clopyralid, isoxaflutole, and S-metolachlor applied PPI or PRE in conventional-till corn. Application technique did not influence crop injury in Kansas. In Missouri, greater crop injury was observed with treatments containing isoxaflutole when applied PPI vs. PRE. Application technique influenced giant foxtail, ivyleaf morningglory, large crabgrass, Palmer amaranth, and common waterhemp control. In dry years, control of these weeds was usually either same or greater with PPI than it was with PRE treatments. In years with average to above average precipitation, isoxaflutole provided greater control as a PRE application than as a PPI application. Palmer amaranth and common waterhemp control was usually greater with atrazine, isoxaflutole, and S-metolachlor applied PRE than it was applied PPI. Differences in control of all weeds between PPI and PRE applications were less obvious with two or three herbicides compared with treatments with a single herbicide. In general, the corn yield was greater with most of the treatments having two, three, or four herbicides than it was with treatments having a single herbicide, which was due to better weed control with the tank-mixtreatments.

The effect of the sulfonylurea herbicides, bensulfuron, chlorsulfuron, nicosulfuron, primisulfuron, rimsulfuron, thifensulfuron, and triasulfuron, on seed germination and radicle elongation of the parasitic plant, Egyptian broomrape, was tested in vitro without a host plant. These herbicides applied to the seeds at the preconditioning and germination stages significantly reduced radicle elongation of the parasite. Chlorsulfuron, rimsulfuron, and triasulfuron were further tested in polyethylene bags, where the parasite was able to parasitize tomato roots. Chlorsulfuron and triasulfuron applied at 2.5 and 25 μM ai and rimsulfuron at 5.0 μM ai, at the preconditioning and germination stages, almost completely inhibited parasite development, but at lower concentrations the parasite partially recovered 26 days after application. Chlorsulfuron inhibited parasite development for 34 d. Chlorsulfuron, triasulfuron, and rimsulfuron damaged parasite organs and caused rapid death of Egyptian broomrape tubercles when applied after the parasite had completed attachment to host roots. However, chlorsulfuron and triasulfuron at 25 μM ai were toxic to the tomato plants.

Experiments were conducted between 2002 and 2004 at multiple locations in Florida to determine the efficacy of aminopyralid and other herbicides on tropical soda apple (TSA) control. Aminopyralid applied at rates ≥0.08 kg ai/ha consistently provided >96% TSA control up to 335 d after treatment (DAT), while applications <0.06 kg/ha were less effective as well as inconsistent. Control of TSA with aminopyralid was often not statistically different from control with triclopyr, picloram, or dicamba. However, these responses were likely due to the variability in TSA control by triclopyr, picloram, or dicamba across several locations. For example, the standard error of the mean for TSA control with picloram at 335 DAT was 8, compared to 1 for aminopyralid. Herbicides were applied in April, January, and June, but time of year did not affect the efficacy of aminopyralid. Aminopyralid possesses soil residual activity and controlled 98% of germinating seedlings at 75 DAT, compared to 0% control for triclopyr or 2,4-D + dicamba. Therefore, aminopyralid controlled TSA from foliar applications and soil residual activity more consistently than any other herbicide evaluated in these experiments.

Field studies were conducted in Wyoming and Nebraska in 2007 through 2009 to evaluate winter wheat response to aminocyclopyrachlor. Aminocyclopyrachlor was applied at rates between 15 and 120 g ai ha−1 6, 4, and 2 mo before winter wheat planting (MBP). Redroot pigweed control was 90% with aminocyclopyrachlor rates of 111 and 50 g ha−1 when applied 4 or 2 MBP. Aminocyclopyrachlor at 37 g ha−1 controlled Russian thistle 90% when applied 6 MBP. At Sidney, NE, winter wheat yield loss was > 10% at all aminocyclopyrachlor rates when applied 2 or 4 MBP, and at all rates > 15 g ha−1 when applied 6 MBP. At Lingle, WY, > 40% winter wheat yield loss was observed at all rates when averaged over application timings. Although the maturing wheat plants looked normal, few seed were produced in the aminocyclopyrachlor treatments, and therefore preharvest wheat injury ratings of only 5% corresponded to yield losses ranging from 23 to 90%, depending on location. The high potential for winter wheat crop injury will almost certainly preclude the use of aminocyclopyrachlor in the fallow period immediately preceding winter wheat.

Nine herbicides were tested in a field trial during 2001 and 2002 for the ability to suppress growth of established plants of yellow old world bluestem (OWB) that had invaded native vegetation in central Kansas. Herbicide treatments were applied to OWB at the V4 stage of growth using the Nebraska staging method. At 9 wk after treatment (WAT), plots treated with imazapyr at 1.40 kg ai/ ha had much lower OWB plant frequency than the untreated plots, and plots sprayed with imazapyr and bromacil at 7.84 kg ai/ha had much lower OWB tiller densities than the control plots. Imazapyr and glyphosate at 3.36 kg ai/ha provided greater OWB control than other herbicides. At the first frost after treatment application, imazapyr and bromacil treatments continued to have lower OWB frequency and tiller density than the control plots. Visible herbicide control was closely related to end-of-season yield (R = −0.97). Imazapic at 0.16 kg ai/ha, glyphosate, sulfometuron at 0.21 kg ai/ ha, bromacil, and imazapyr controlled OWB from 54 to 94%. Split applications, altered timing of herbicide application, or varied rates of herbicides that exhibited suppressive potential may further improve efficacy of these herbicides.

Field studies were conducted from 1991 to 1994 to investigate the effectiveness of reduced rates of bentazon in tank-mixtures with imazethapyr, thifensulfuron, or HOE 075032 for improved control of redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters in navy bean. Tank-mixtures of bentazon at 600 g ai/ha plus imazethapyr at 25 g/ha or HOE 075032 at 5 to 15 g/ha controlled both redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters. These rates represent an approximate 45% reduction in total amount of active ingredient needed to control these weeds compared with full label rates. Bentazon tank-mixtures with 2 or 4 g/ha of thifensulfuron controlled these weeds but caused severe injury and delayed crop maturity. In greenhouse studies, the GR25 for HOE 075032 in navy bean was > 90 g/ha, while in soybean it was 16 to 24 g/ha.

Field experiments were established to observe the effects of adjuvants and time of application on weed control and ‘Terra-Vig 515’ soybean tolerance with POST applications of AC 263,222. A nonionic surfactant or a crop oil concentrate increased sicklepod control with AC 263,222 applied at either V2 or V6 soybean growth stages. Sicklepod control increased as AC 263,222 was increased from 35 to 70 g ai ha–1 only when applied without an adjuvant. Late in the season, there was no difference in sicklepod control between V2 and V6 applications. Adjuvants and application timing within herbicide treatments had no effect on pitted morningglory control, and, though adjuvants increased common cocklebur control, all treatments controlled more than 85% of both species. AC 263,222 with adjuvants at all rates and timings injured and stunted soybean more 2 wk after treatment compared to AC 263,222 alone. AC 263,222 at 35 or 70 g ha–1 with crop oil concentrate reduced yields more than AC 263,222, with either a surfactant or no adjuvant when applied to V2 soybeans.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate halosulfuron tolerance of several squash and cucumber cultivars commonly grown in Georgia. There was an inverse linear relationship between squash plant biomass and rate of halosulfuron (r 2 = 0.70 to 0.92). With the exception of ‘Supersett’, the slopes from regression of all squash cultivars were equivalent. The estimated amount of halosulfuron required to reduce growth by 20%, based on regression, ranged from 8.2 to 45 g ai/ha (for Supersett and ‘Dixie’, respectively). Squash plant height was also reduced by halosulfuron, though plants began to recover from the injury by the end of the study. There was no effect of halosulfuron rate on cucumber plant biomass or height. Cucumber cultivars appeared to be more tolerant to halosulfuron than did squash cultivars.

Weed science is responsible for reducing weed competition with crops, within constraints, allowing food production for a growing world population. We have been successful, but with an increasing reliance on the fantastic arsenal of herbicides. Heavy herbicide usage and the concomitant loss of control due to changing weed species spectra, as well as evolved herbicide resistance, along with cancellations of registrations, limit chemical options. Old “innovations” such as well-conceived rotations and various mechanical procedures partly alleviate chemical dependency. We must try innovative, meaningful herbicide mixtures, whether synergistic or additive, mixtures of crop varieties, more competitive varieties, including allelopathic varieties, which could all help to lower chemical dependency. Three cases where innovative genetic-engineering coupled with chemistry seem to be needed are: (a) for the control of parasitic higher plant weeds such as broomrapes (Orobanche spp.), dodders (Cuscuta spp.), witchweeds (Striga spp.) that cannot be controlled by mechanical or selective chemical means with a sufficient margin of user error; (b) for the control of weeds in wheat (Triticum spp.) that are evolving multiple and cross resistances to all wheat-selective herbicides; and (c) to replace the major s-triazine and chloroacetamide herbicides in corn (Zea mays L.) that are under attack and where many local restrictions and cancellations have been imposed. We need better replacements than the resistance-prone inhibitors of acetolactate-synthase and acetyl-CoA-carboxylase. Much of the long-term innovative planning and research must come from the public sector as no one else seems willing to fill the needs.

Sicklepod control with one or two cultivations or postemergence (POE) directed-spray applications of linuron or metribuzin plus 2,4-DB was less than 50% in August evaluations when no soil-applied herbicide had been used. However, sicklepod control greater than 75% was noted through August when two cultivations or metribuzin plus 2,4-DB applied POE followed either metribuzin applied preplant incorporated (PPI) and preemergence (PRE) or metribuzin plus alachlor applied as a PRE treatment. One cultivation after these soil-applied herbicide treatments did not reduce sicklepod populations compared to the chemical treatments alone. Soybean yields more than doubled over yields in untreated plots when a combination of soil-applied herbicides and two cultivations or metribuzin plus 2,4-DB applied POE were used.

CGA 163935 was evaluated for its growth regulating effect on common bermudagrass for two years and ‘Tifway’ bermudagrass for four years. The vegetative growth of mowed common bermudagrass was suppressed for 5 wk when CGA 163935 was applied at 0.2 kg ha–1 followed by 0.1 kg ha–1 2 wk later and mowed Tifway bermudagrass was suppressed for 4 wk after application of 0.2 kg ha–1. CGA 163935 suppressed vegetative growth of non-mowed common bermudagrass for 9 wk and non-mowed Tifway bermudagrass for 2 to 8 wk at the same rates. Common bermudagrass tolerated CGA 163935 when applied initially at 0.2 kg ha–1 and followed by 0.1 kg ha–1 at a 2-wk interval for a total 0.3 kg ha–1 rate. However, common bermudagrass was severely injured (> 30%) when CGA 163935 was applied at 0.2 kg ha–1 in each of two applications for a total rate of 0.4 kg ha–1. Tifway bermudagrass tolerated CGA 163935 when applied at 0.2 kg ha–1 as a single application or when the 0.2 kg ha–1 was followed by 0.1 kg ha–1 at a 4-wk interval. Tifway bermudagrass was severely injured (> 30%) when CGA 163935 was applied at 0.4 kg ha–1 as a single application or when 0.2 kg ha–1 was followed by 0.1 kg ha–1 at 2- or 3-wk interval. Seedheads were suppressed in common bermudagrass for 1 to 2 wk with CGA 163935 at 0.4 kg ha–1.

Both regulatory and consumer forces have increased the demand for biopesticides, particularly in amenity areas such as turfgrass. Unfortunately, few natural products are available for selective weed control in turfgrass. Two bioherbicides reported to control broadleaf weeds without injuring turfgrass are Phoma macrostoma and thaxtomin A. Field and container experiments were conducted to evaluate PRE and POST efficacy of P. macrostoma and thaxtomin A on regionally important broadleaf weeds. In container experiments, PRE applications of P. macrostoma provided 65 to 100% control of dandelion, marsh yellowcress, and flexuous bittercress, equivalent to that of pendimethalin. Control of yellow woodsorrel, henbit, hairy galinsoga, common chickweed, or annual bluegrass was less than with pendimethalin. In contrast, POST applications did not control any species as well as an industry-standard synthetic auxin herbicide. PRE or POST applications of thaxtomin A controlled six of the eight species tested as well as the industry-standard PRE or POST herbicides. In field tests, overall PRE broadleaf weed control with P. macrostoma and thaxtomin A peaked 4 wk after treatment at 64 and 72%, respectively, and declined afterward, suggesting that these bioherbicides possess short residuals and therefore must be reapplied for season-long control. Overall POST broadleaf weed control using P. macrostoma and thaxtomin A was only 41 and 25%, respectively. PRE followed by early-POST applications of thaxtomin A provided ≥ 86% henbit control. These results suggest that both P. macrostoma and thaxtomin A are capable of controlling certain broadleaf weeds in turfgrass. However, both lack efficacy on some important weed species, particularly chickweed. Thaxtomin A efficacy on henbit was improved by increased dose and by PRE followed by early-POST applications.
