Recent increases in the prevalence of glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth mandate that new control strategies be developed to optimize weed control and crop performance. A field study was conducted in 2012 and 2013 in Jackson, TN, and in 2013 in Knoxville, TN, to evaluate POST weed management programs applied after harvest (POST-harvest) for prevention of seed production from GR Palmer amaranth and to evaluate herbicide carryover to winter wheat. Treatments were applied POST-harvest to corn stubble, with three applications followed by a PRE herbicide applied at wheat planting. Paraquat alone or mixed with S-metolachlor controlled 91% of existing Palmer amaranth 14 d after treatment but did not control regrowth. Paraquat tank-mixed with a residual herbicide of metribuzin, pyroxasulfone, saflufenacil, flumioxazin, pyroxasulfone plus flumioxazin, or pyroxasulfone plus fluthiacet improved control of regrowth or new emergence compared with paraquat alone. All residual herbicide treatments provided similar GR Palmer amaranth control. Through implementation of POST-harvest herbicide applications, the addition of 1,200 seed m−2 or approximately 12 million seed ha−1 to the soil seedbank was prevented. Overall, the addition of a residual herbicide provided only 4 to 7% more GR Palmer amaranth control than paraquat alone. Wheat injury was evident (< 10%) in 2012 from the PRE applications, but not in 2013. Wheat grain yield was not adversely affected by any herbicide application.

Until recently melaleuca was spreading at a rate faster than it was being controlled throughout the boundaries of the South Florida Water Management District (District). Although melaleuca is a difficult species to eradicate, apparently District efforts, along with those of other governmental agencies and private groups, are containing its spread within the Everglades Water Conservation Areas (WCAs) and the marsh of Lake Okeechobee. Melaleuca has been completely cleared from WCA-2A, -3B, and -3A, south of Alligator Alley. These areas are now under “maintenance control.” Maintenance control means applying management techniques in a continuous basis to keep an invasive plant population at its lowest feasible level. Today, the melaleuca infestation is no longer increasing; in many areas, it is being reduced. Preliminary results from the latest District survey indicate melaleuca infestation has decreased considerably in South Florida, especially in public lands. The intent of this paper is to provide an assessment of progress made by the District's melaleuca control program over the past 7 yr.

Greenhouse studies assessed the susceptibility of three common lambsquarters biotypes to foliar-applied bromoxynil, dicamba, and thifensulfuron. Field studies evaluated the effectiveness of the same herbicides in conjunction with atrazine and row cultivation for the control of common lambsquarters in corn. In the field, bromoxynil was applied at 140, 280, and 420 g/ha, dicamba at 140, 280, and 560 g/ha, and thifensulfuron at 2, 3, and 4 g/ha. In the greenhouse, bromoxynil and thifensulfuron reduced common lambsquarters growth by at least 55%, while dicamba reduced growth 45% or less. Two of the three biotypes were resistant to atrazine. In the field, weed control was up to 70% better in cultivated plots than in noncultivated plots. Cultivation sometimes promoted additional weed emergence, but later emerging weeds rarely reached reproductive maturity. Atrazine improved the level of weed control only if triazine-susceptible weeds were present. The lowest rates of bromoxynil and dicamba (140 g/ha) controlled common lambsquarters 85% or greater even without cultivation, whereas control with the low rate of thifensulfuron (2 g/ha) was acceptable (greater than 85%) 8 wk after planting only in combination with cultivation. Combinations of reduced herbicide rates and mechanical cultivation provided effective, alternative control strategies for both triazine-resistant and susceptible common lambsquarters.

During the 20th century, naturalized saltcedar has become common within major tributaries throughout the western United States. Often growing in nearly monocultural stands, saltcedar is suspected of lowering water tables, thus destroying wetlands and wildlife habitats. Management efforts have primarily relied on mechanical and cultural practices, but recent success in controlling saltcedar with imazapyr has led to wider herbicide use. Based on a number of research/extension field trials in New Mexico from 1987 to present, imazapyr applied alone or in combination with glyphosate was found to control saltcedar to levels of 90% or greater, especially when applied in August or September. For fixed-wing aircraft applications, we recommend applying imazapyr at 1.1 kg ai/ha or imazapyr plus glyphosate at 0.56 plus 0.56 kg/ha. For individual plant treatments, we recommend spraying the foliage to wet with imazapyr at 1% v/v in water, or imazapyr plus glyphosate at 0.5 plus 0.5% v/v. Herbicide activity may be reduced as saltcedar height and stem number increases.

The occurrence of 36 arable weed species across 13 counties in the eastern Arkansas–Mississippi Delta area on 489 randomly selected road sites was surveyed in 2012. Palmer amaranth, johnsongrass, large crabgrass, barnyardgrass, prickly sida, and broadleaf signalgrass were the top six weed species, with occurrence noted at 313, 294, 261, 238, 176, and 136 sites, respectively. Factors found to affect weed occurrence along Mississippi Delta roadsides included topographical characteristics, weed species, ditch slope, road type, and nearby land use. Among roadside topographical characteristics, road shoulder was found to strongly affect weed occurrence. In addition, paved and gravel road types with moderate roadside slope explained most of the variability of weed occurrence at each sampling site. Additionally, nearby arable land use affected weed occurrence more so than natural, residential, and pastoral land. Barnyardgrass, johnsongrass, and Palmer amaranth were 3.6 to 4.3 times more likely to occur than all other species identified. An effective weed management plan along eastern Arkansas–Mississippi Delta roadsides should focus on road shoulder, adjacent arable land use, road type, and specific weed species (e.g., Palmer amaranth, johnsongrass, and barnyardgrass). The inclusion of these parameters in future weed control programs can prove invaluable for preventing the spread of the herbicide-resistant Palmer amaranth, barnyardgrass, and johnsongrass.

The goal of this research was to develop herbicide programs for controlling acetolactate synthase (ALS)–, propanil-, quinclorac-, and clomazone-resistant barnyardgrass. Two applications of imazethapyr alone at 70 g ai ha−1 failed to control the ALS-resistant biotype more than 36%; however, when imazethapyr at 70 g ha−1 was applied early POST (EPOST) followed by imazethapyr at 70 g ha−1 plus fenoxaprop at 120 g ai ha−1 immediately prior to flooding (PREFLD), barnyardgrass control improved to 78% at 10 wk after planting. When imazethapyr was applied twice following PRE or delayed PRE applications of clomazone at 336 g ai ha−1, quinclorac at 560 g ai ha−1, pendimethalin at 1,120 g ai ha−1, or thiobencarb at 4,480 g ai ha−1 control was 92 to 100%. A single-pass program consisting of a delayed PRE application of clomazone at 336 g ha−1 plus quinclorac at 560 g ha−1 plus pendimethalin at 1,120 g ha−1 plus thiobencarb at 4,480 g ha−1 controlled all herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass biotypes at the same level as a standard multiple application program.

Field studies were conducted in 2008 and 2009 near Crowley, LA to evaluate the addition of a herbicide with soil-residual activity in mixture with imazethapyr applied very early POST followed by an application of imazethapyr or imazamox 2 wk after the initial application. Weeds evaluated included red rice, barnyardgrass, and alligatorweed. Weed control with treatments including a herbicide with soil-residual activity was equivalent to or higher than imazethapyr applied alone followed by imazethapyr or imazamox. Yield and economical returns were maximized with quinclorac or penoxsulam mixed with imazethapyr followed by imazethapyr or imazamox. The addition of quinclorac or penoxsulam proved to be beneficial in a total weed management program.

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effects of herbicide placement on POST smooth crabgrass and annual bluegrass control. Soil-plus-foliar, soil-only, and foliar-only applications of indaziflam (52.5 g ai ha−1), dithiopyr (560 ai g ha−1), or quinclorac (840 g ai ha−1) were made to one-tiller smooth crabgrass plants. Similarly, indaziflam (52.5 g ha−1), foramsulfuron (29 g ai ha−1), or prodiamine (840 g ai ha−1) were applied to nontillering annual bluegrass plants in an identical manner. No differences in smooth crabgrass control were detected between soil-plus-foliar and soil-only applied indaziflam from 21 to 35 d after treatment (DAT). By 28 DAT, smooth crabgrass control and biomass reductions with these indaziflam treatments were ≥ 90% and not different than quinclorac. Comparatively, smooth crabgrass control with foliar-only applications of indaziflam never exceeded 28%. Responses on annual bluegrass were similar as soil-plus-foliar and soil-only applied indaziflam exhibited greater efficacy than indaziflam applied foliar-only. By 28 DAT, annual bluegrass control and aboveground biomass reductions with soil-plus-foliar and soil-only treatments were ≥ 86% and not different from foramsulfuron. Comparatively, foliar-only applications of indaziflam controlled annual bluegrass ≤ 2%. These results indicate that root absorption is required for POST control of smooth crabgrass and annual bluegrass with indaziflam. Further research is needed to determine if techniques to enhance indaziflam contact with soil will enhance POST smooth crabgrass and annual bluegrass control in the field.

A study was conducted to evaluate interactions of imazethapyr co-application with propanil, thiobencarb, or a prepackaged mixture of propanil plus thiobencarb. At 7, 14, 21, and 49 d after treatment (DAT), synergism occurred for red rice treated with imazethapyr at 70 g ai ha−1 mixed with propanil plus thiobencarb at 1,680 and 3,360 g ai ha−1. A synergistic response was also observed with imazethapyr at 70 g ha−1 mixed with propanil at 1,680 g ha−1; however, all other co-applications evaluated resulted in a neutral response with no antagonism observed. At 7 DAT, antagonism was observed for barnyardgrass when treated with imazethapyr at 70 g ha−1 mixed with propanil plus thiobencarb at 1,680 g ha−1, propanil at 840 g ha−1, or thiobencarb at 840 and 1,680 g ha−1; however, a synergistic response occurred for barnyardgrass control at 14, 21, and 49 DAT with imazethapyr at 70 g ha−1 mixed with propanil plus thiobencarb at 3,360 g ha−1. The synergistic response observed for red rice and barnyardgrass control with a mixture of imazethapyr plus propanil plus thiobencarb can benefit producers by increasing control of red rice and barnyardgrass, and this mixture contains three herbicides with three different modes of action, which can be part of an overall resistance-management strategy in imidazolinone-resistant (IR) rice.

Cloransulam-methyl applied postemergence (POST) following various preplant-incorporated (PPI) herbicides was evaluated in four experiments for weed control in North Carolina soybean over a 2-yr period at three locations. Acifluorfen plus bentazon or chlorimuron alone applied POST injured soybean more than cloransulam-methyl when following any soil-applied herbicide. When following trifluralin PPI, cloransulam-methyl controlled common ragweed, entireleaf morningglory, and pitted morningglory comparable to acifluorfen plus bentazon or chlorimuron. Common lambsquarters and prickly sida control was higher when acifluorfen plus bentazon was applied POST following trifluralin PPI compared to trifluralin PPI followed by cloransulam-methyl or chlorimuron. Acifluorfen plus bentazon or chlorimuron POST controlled yellow nutsedge and smooth pigweed more than cloransulam-methyl POST when following trifluralin PPI. When trifluralin was applied PPI in mixtures with chlorimuron plus metribuzin, flumetsulam, or imazaquin, control of most species was similar regardless of POST treatment used. Soybean treated with cloransulam-methyl yielded 250 kg/ha more than treatments with chlorimuron when these herbicides followed trifluralin plus flumetsulam or trifluralin plus imazaquin. Net returns with different herbicide systems followed trends similar to soybean yield.

Global positioning systems (GPS) technology, developed by the Department of Defense, enable accurate documentation of Cartesian coordinates anywhere on the earth's surface. Surveying, mapping, positioning, and subsequent management of weed infestations can be expedited with this technology. Positions and boundaries of infestation may be located with 10-m or better accuracy while the GPS receiver is continuously moving, and with 2-m or better accuracy with brief stops for repeated sampling. GPS data agreed closely with U.S. Geological Survey data. Coordinates for a weed infestation may be relocated for treatment, evaluation or other purposes. Basic geographic information systems (GIS) map features from Digital Line Graph (DLG), Topologically Integrated Encoding and Reference Systems (TIGER) and other sources of information may be used to fully integrate delimiting survey results from GPS readings in order to develop weed management plans.

No-till production systems coupled with decreased use of soil residual herbicides has led to increased populations of winter annual weeds. Therefore, research was conducted to quantify the effect of henbit interference and crop stand loss on soft red winter wheat grain yield and grain volume weight. The main-plot effect consisted of weed-free versus weedy plots. The subplot effect was winter wheat stand loss treatments of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%. Henbit interference did not affect test weight; however, test weight decreased as percentage of stand loss increased. Henbit did not reduce crop yield at 18 plants/m2; however, at 82 and 155 plants/m2, crop yield was reduced 13 and 38%, respectively, when averaged across all stand loss treatments. Yield estimates based on wheat tiller or spike density decreased linearly as crop stand loss increased. Our results indicated that henbit interference coupled with crop stand loss may significantly decrease crop yield and profitability of wheat production systems.

Field experiments were conducted at three locations in Mississippi in 1995 and 1996 to evaluate labeled and alternative herbicides and herbicide combinations for weed desiccation prior to soybean harvest. Weeds evaluated included pitted morningglory, hemp sesbania, spotted spurge, common cocklebur, and sicklepod. Soybean yield and harvestable soybean losses were not affected by preharvest herbicide treatments, spray volume, or surfactant concentration. Soybean moisture was most consistently reduced by glufosinate compared to the untreated and other herbicides and herbicide combinations evaluated. Most desiccation treatments at Stoneville and Brooksville resulted in foreign material similar to the weed-free check. Glufosinate at 0.84, 1.1, and 1.4 kg ai/ha desiccated all weeds evaluated 90% or more with no differences among rates. The addition of 3.4 or 6.7 kg ai/ha sodium chlorate to 0.28 kg ai/ha paraquat, 1.1 and 2.2 kg ai/ha glyphosate, or 0.28 and 0.56 kg ai/ha oxyfluorfen increased desiccation of most weeds evaluated, with no difference between sodium chlorate rates. In some instances, reducing application volume from 281 to 94 L/ha improved pitted morningglory desiccation when 0.28 g/ha paraquat was applied alone. There were no differences between 0.25 and 0.50% (v/v) surfactant for most parameters evaluated.

Experiments were conducted at three locations in Louisiana from 1992 to 1994 to evaluate broadleaf weed control with sulfentrazone. Sulfentrazone at 0.42 kg ai/ha applied PPI or PRE provided at least 93% control of entireleaf morningglory in all years at all locations, which was greater than control with metribuzin PRE. Prickly sida control with sulfentrazone ranged from 83 to 94%, which was equal to or greater than control with metribuzin. Hemp sesbania and sicklepod control with sulfentrazone was unacceptable (≤75%) regardless of application method and generally was lower than control with metribuzin. Greater than 90% control of smellmelon and hophornbeam copperleaf was observed with all treatments. Minor but transient soybean injury was noted at one location in one year. Soybean yields following sulfentrazone PRE at St. Joseph were greater than yields with metribuzin as a result of the general increase in broadleaf weed control.

Temperature, soil moisture, green foxtail density, relative emergence dates, and soil fertility effects on green foxtail and spring wheat competition were evaluated in controlled environments. Green foxtail competition was highest at 30 C and without moisture stress. Early green foxtail emergence increased competition with wheat more than changes in temperature, soil moisture, or green foxtail density. At 30 C, wheat fresh weight was reduced 50% by green foxtail seeded 4 d before wheat, but only 13% by foxtail seeded 4 d after wheat. Doubling the nitrogen and total nutrient concentration did not increase wheat growth, but increased foxtail weight 41 and 75%, respectively.

In 1987 and 1988, effects of full-season interference of individual weeds on cotton yield were measured with area of influence procedures. In 1987, one spurred anoda, common cocklebur, large crabgrass, jimsonweed, common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, common ragweed, or prickly sida plant per 3 m of row reduced cotton yield between 1% and 7%. Sicklepod did not cause a detectable yield loss. Redroot pigweed, common cocklebur and common ragweed caused 7%, 6% and 5% yield loss, respectively, in 1987. In row weed influence varied from 17 cm (large crabgrass interference) to 86 cm (common cocklebur interference). In 1988, yield losses by individual weeds ranged from 3% to 27%. Common cocklebur, jimsonweed, and common ragweed reduced cotton yields 28%, 15% and 12%, respectively. Spurred anoda and common cocklebur influenced 160 cm and 136 cm of cotton row, respectively. Sicklepod influenced only 47 cm of cotton row.

Chlorimuron applied alone and in combination with acifluorfen or thifensulfuron was evaluated for POST control of common lambsquarters, common ragweed, common cocklebur, and a mixture of pitted, ivyleaf, entireleaf, and tall morningglory in soybean. Common cocklebur control was similar with thifensulfuron at 3 and 4 g ae ha−1 and with chlorimuron at 7 and 9 g ae ha−1, Common ragweed and morningglory control was greater with chlorimuron while common lambsquarters control was greater with thifensulfuron. Control of all species was good with combinations of chlorimuron at 7 g ha−1 plus thifensulfuron at 2 g ha−1 or acifluorfen at 140 g ae ha−1 and similar to or greater than the control with chlorimuron at 9 g ha−1. Soybean yields with all POST herbicide treatments were equivalent to that of the weed-free check.

The study was conducted to determine the cross-resistance of imazethapyr-resistant common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) to selected imidazolinone, sulfonylurea, and triazolopyrimidine herbicides. Whole-plant herbicide dose–response curves and in vitro enzyme studies showed that imazethapyr-resistant common sunflower was highly resistant to imazamox, slightly resistant to thifensulfuron and chlorimuron, and not resistant to cloransulam. Resistance ratios of herbicide concentrations required to inhibit growth by 25% were 310, 3.3, 2.0, and 1.4 times greater in the resistant biotype than in the susceptible biotype for imazamox, thifensulfuron, chlorimuron, and cloransulam, respectively. Similarly, herbicide concentrations required to inhibit ALS activity in vitro by 25% were 332.0, 18.6, 8.3, and 1.2 times greater in the resistant biotype than in the sensitive biotype for imazamox, chlorimuron, thifensulfuron, and cloransulam, respectively.

Soybean consultants from Arkansas, Louisiana, southeast Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee were surveyed in 2016 to assess weed management practices and the prevalence of herbicide-resistant weeds in midsouthern U.S. soybean production. The consultants surveyed represented 13%, 28%, 8%, 16%, and 5% of the total soybean area planted in Arkansas, Louisiana, southeast Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee, respectively. Of the total scouted area, 78% of the consultants said their growers planted glyphosate-resistant soybean in 2016, with 18% planting glufosinate-resistant (LibertyLink®), primarily due to familiarity with and cost of the technology. Although 94% of the consultants determined that glufosinate was most effective on killing Palmer amaranth, the primary concern associated with controlling herbicide-resistant weeds was the associated cost, followed by return profit and time constraints. Palmer amaranth, morningglory species, horseweed, barnyardgrass, and Italian ryegrass were the five most problematic weeds in soybean across the five states. Palmer amaranth was the most problematic and important weed in each state individually. The increased concern (77% of consultants) with this species was attributed to the rising concern with and occurrence of protoporphyrinogen oxidase–resistant Palmer amaranth. Consultants were of the opinion that more research was needed on cover crops and the new traited technologies in order to improve weed management in soybean.

A time course of Egyptian broomrape development on tomato roots grown in pots in the greenhouse revealed an increase in the number of parasitic attachments from 2.6 at 4 weeks after planting (WAP) to 139 when rated 2 wk later. Rimsulfuron sprayed on tomato foliage as single and split applications (12.5 g ai/ha) 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 WAP did not decrease Egyptian broomrape damage to tomato plants, as expressed by reduced tomato plant height and fresh weight, and the total number of parasitic attachments on the roots was not significantly different compared to the nontreated control. A single foliar application of rimsulfuron (25 g ai/ha) to tomato at 10 days after planting (DAP) and split applications at 10 and 20 and 10, 20, and 30 DAP significantly reduced the number of Egyptian broomrape inflorescences to 2.2, 0.2, and 0, respectively, 9 WAP compared with 19.6 inflorescences in the nontreated control. Application of the herbicide under the same conditions to tomato plants in pots covered with activated charcoal did not significantly influence the number of Egyptian broomrape inflorescences. Chlorsulfuron and triasulfuron applied directly to the soil at rates ≥ 3: 3.75 g ai/ha completely controlled Egyptian broomrape. Primisulfuron and chlorimuron, each at 22.5 g ai/ha, reduced the number of inflorescences to 0.6 and 0.4, respectively. Chlorimuron did not significantly reduce the total number of parasitic attachments on the roots, but primisulfuron at the same concentration significantly increased the total number of parasitic attachments on the root system to 50 as compared to 23 in the nontreated control. Tribenuron had no effect on the parasitism process, as reflected in the number of inflorescences and parasitic attachments on the roots.
