Field experiments were conducted in Virginia in 2000 and 2001 to determine the response of wheat and Italian ryegrass biotypes to postemergence applications of diclofop-methyl compared with several experimental and registered herbicides. Control of diclofop-methyl–sensitive Italian ryegrass by AE F130060 03 was similar to control by diclofop-methyl and was greater than that by chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron, chlorsulfuron plus metribuzin, MON 37560, ICIA 0604, and CGA 184927. AE F130060 03 also controlled diclofop-methyl–resistant Italian ryegrass better than the other herbicides. Late-season spike density of diclofop-methyl–resistant Italian ryegrass was reduced 91 to 98% by AE F130060 03. Despite injury ranging from 10 to 24%, grain yield from wheat treated with AE F130060 03 was similar to or greater than yield from wheat treated with the other herbicides. Italian ryegrass control, spike density, and grain yield were not influenced by AE F130060 03 rate or addition of methylated seed oil.

This study documents the first case of triazine resistance in wild radish and the resistance mechanism involved. The high survival (57 to 97%) of the resistant (R) biotype progeny plants treated at a rate four times higher than the commonly recommended rate of simazine or atrazine clearly established that the R biotype plants were resistant to triazines. All the plants of the susceptible (S) biotype plants were killed when treated at half the commonly recommended rate of atrazine (0.5 kg/ha) or simazine (0.25 kg/ha). The dry weight of the S biotype was reduced by 89 to 96% at the commonly recommended rate of atrazine or simazine, while the dry weight of the R biotype plants was reduced by only 36 to 54% even when treated at a rate four times higher than the commonly recommended rate of atrazine or simazine. The growth-reduction–ratio values indicated that the R biotype progeny plants were 105 and 159 times more resistant to atrazine and simazine, respectively, than the S biotype plants. Leaf chlorophyll fluorescence yield was reduced by 97% in the S biotype 24 h after application of triazine compared with only 9% reduction in the R biotype, indicating that the resistance mechanism involved is target-site based. The R biotype was effectively controlled by herbicides of different modes of action.

Applications of metribuzin plus MSMA have been used to control goosegrass in bermudagrass turf for over 20 yr. In 2003, two goosegrass biotypes on the island of Kauai, Hawaii were found to be resistant to applications of metribuzin plus MSMA. Metribuzin plus MSMA applied at rates of 0.28 kg ai/ha plus 2.2 kg/ha, respectively, followed by MSMA at 2.2 kg/ha 7 d later, provided 100% control of two susceptible goosegrass biotypes, but no control of two resistant biotypes. At the flowering growth stage, metribuzin applied at a rate of 0.28 kg/ha controlled both susceptible biotypes (> 92%), but did not control the two resistant biotypes. Two applications of MSMA applied at a rate of 2.2 kg/ha (7 d apart) did not control any of the four biotypes at the flowering growth stage. The two resistant biotypes were approximately 100 to 200 times less sensitive to increasing rates of metribuzin than the two susceptible biotypes. The two biotypes that were resistant to metribuzin plus MSMA were also resistant to applications of simazine plus MSMA. However, all four biotypes were susceptible to applications of glyphosate and foramsulfuron.

A study was conducted in 2002 and 2003 to evaluate response of seven rice cultivars to V-10029 applied at 20 and 40 g ai/ha to two- to three- or four- to five-leaf rice. Differential response of the rice cultivars to V-10029 was observed. Medium-grain ‘Earl’ was less tolerant to V-10029, as reflected by increased injury, shorter plants, and fewer plants at 7 d after late postemergence treatment and shorter plants and lower grain yield at harvest, when compared with nontreated Earl. Growth of medium-grain ‘Bengal’ was initially inhibited by V-10029; however, plant height at harvest and rice grain yield of Bengal were not affected. All long-grain cultivars exhibited tolerance to V-10029, both initially and at harvest. The results indicate that rice cultivars vary in tolerance to V-10029.

The development of glufosinate-resistant corn represents a new weed management system for corn growers. Field experiments were conducted from 1995 to 1997 at four locations in southwestern Ontario. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of timing of weed control relative to the growth stage of corn with glufosinate applied alone or in combination with residual herbicides. Control of all species tested improved with the addition of atrazine plus dicamba to glufosinate, applied from the two- to eight-leaf stage of corn growth. Based on a 90% weed dry matter reduction, glufosinate with atrazine plus dicamba controlled common ragweed, common lambsquarters, and pigweed species at the three-leaf stage of corn and yellow foxtail, barnyardgrass, and large crabgrass at the two-, four-, and eight-leaf stage of corn, respectively. Weed control with glufosinate alone was improved when applied at the later growth stages of corn. Glufosinate applied alone at the four-leaf stage of corn controlled common ragweed and common lambsquarters, whereas pigweed species were controlled effectively at the eight-leaf stage of corn growth. Corn grain yield was consistently higher when glufosinate was applied in combination with residual herbicides, compared to glufosinate alone. Glufosinate in combination with residual herbicides applied to corn at the three- to five-leaf stage may represent the best timing for weed control. Our data suggested that a tank mixture of glufosinate with other postemergence residual herbicides or a split application of glufosinate in combination with cultivation may be required for weed control in glufosinate-resistant corn.

Field studies were conducted in 2008 and 2009 near Crowley, Louisiana, to evaluate the addition of different propanil formulations in mixture with a standard imazethapyr program of 70 g ai ha−1 early postemergence followed by (fb) 70 g ha−1 late postemergence. Weeds evaluated included red rice, barnyardgrass, Texasweed, and alligatorweed. Control of all species with treatments, including a propanil formulation applied at 3,400 g ai ha−1, was equivalent to, or greater than, the standard imazethapyr program. Rough rice yield and economic returns were maximized when the propanil formulations of Propanil 1 or Propanil 3 were mixed with imazethapyr in the early postemergence applications. The addition of propanil to imazethapyr increased rough rice yield and economic returns because of improved weed control.

Field experiments were conducted at two locations in 1989 and 1990 to investigate possible interactions between POST applications of primisulfuron and selected soil-applied carbamate and organophosphate corn insecticides. Insecticides were applied in-furrow at planting, at recommended use rates. Primisulfuron was applied POST to corn in the three- or five-leaf stage at 0, 20, 40, or 80 g ai ha-1. Combinations of primisulfuron with disulfoton, fonofos, isozophos, or terbufos resulted in foliar and root injury, plant height reductions, and yield losses. No foliar or root injury, plant height reductions, or yield losses were observed from combinations of primisulfuron and carbaryl, carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, or diazinon. Differences among and within the experiments are attributed to edaphic and environmental conditions at the time of primisulfuron application.

Reducing seeding rates in 19- or 76-cm row soybean below the optimum rate may reduce soybean competitiveness with weeds, and indirectly increase production costs to the grower. Field studies in 2001 and 2002 evaluated the effect of soybean seeding rate and row spacing on the emergence, growth, and competitiveness of eastern black nightshade (EBN) in soybean. EBN emergence ceased within 45 d after planting (DAP), and was similar across soybean seeding rates and row spacing. EBN control by glyphosate was not affected by soybean population or row spacing. Soybean planted in 19-cm rows was more competitive with EBN, regardless of seeding rate. Increasing the soybean seeding rate in 76-cm rows from 185,000 seeds/ha to 432,000 seeds/ha reduced EBN dry weight threefold at East Lansing and nearly twofold at Clarksville in 2002. There was no increase in EBN density or dry weight in 19-cm row soybean planted at 308,000 seeds/ha compared with 556,000 seeds/ha, whereas a seeding rate of 432,000 seeds/ha in 76-cm row soybean did not suppress EBN dry weight or increase soybean yield in the presence of EBN compared with a seeding rate of 308,000 seeds/ha.

Small broomrape is an annual holoparasitic weed that was recently discovered in red clover production fields in Oregon. Imidazolinone herbicides such as imazamox control small broomrape; however, the mechanism of uptake by the parasite is largely unknown. Studies were conducted to determine the imazamox route of uptake by small broomrape in red clover, and to determine the potential for imazamox to be exuded from red clover and the subsequent effect on small broomrape. Small broomrape control was best at 90% when imazamox was foliar-applied, and worst at 42% or less when imazamox was soil-applied. The presence of activated charcoal to adsorb imazamox at the soil surface did not affect efficacy of broadcast foliar treatment. Small broomrape control was also evaluated when a foliar-treated red clover plant was grown in the same pot as a nontreated, parasitized red clover plant that was bagged during herbicide application. Activated charcoal was spread on the soil surface to adsorb imazamox, thus limiting herbicide uptake routes to the foliage of one of two red clover plants in the pot. Small broomrape attachment decreased on nontreated red clover when the other red clover plant in the pot was treated, suggesting roots exuded the herbicide or an active metabolite.

Germination stimulants were tested for effectiveness on velvetleaf seed imbibition and germination and concurrent microbial attack of seed to deplete weed seed in soil. Several chemicals increased in vitro seed germination and decreased the numbers of hard, viable seed. The proportion of nonviable seed, 5% with Fusarium oxysporum (Schlech.), was enhanced to 40% by adding ethephon at 100 μg/ml. Fungal density on seedling roots and imbibed (nonviable seed) was increased by chemical treatment. Seedling emergence was reduced 15% when ethephon or carbofuran was applied to soil with the fungus. Shoot dry weight decreased and root infection increased with all treatments regardless of fungal inoculation. Butylate and carbofuran increased infection of imbibed seed in soil by F. oxysporum while ethephon and AC94377 increased infection by other soil fungi.

Five biotypes of common cocklebur that were not controlled with acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides were tested in greenhouse and laboratory studies to determine the magnitude of resistance and cross-resistance to four ALS-inhibiting herbicides. In vivo inhibition of ALS was also evaluated. Based on phytotoxicity, all five ALS-resistant biotypes of common cocklebur were > 390 times more resistant than the susceptible biotype to imazethapyr. However, only four of these biotypes were also resistant to another imidazolinone, imazaquin. Two biotypes were cross-resistant to the sulfonylurea, chlorimuron, and the triazolopyrimidine sulfonanilide, NAF-75. One biotype demonstrated intermediate susceptibility to imazaquin, chlorimuron, and NAF-75. In all cases, the resistance exhibited at the whole plant level was associated with an insensitive ALS.

Field studies were conducted to compare the response of one inbred (‘CL161’) and two hybrid (‘CLXL729’ and ‘CLXL745’) Clearfield (CL) rice cultivars to imazamox. Imazamox was applied at 44 and 88 g ai ha−1 to rice in the panicle initiation (PI) and PI plus 14 d (PI + 14) growth stages and at 44 g ha−1 to rice in the midboot growth stage. Maturity of hybrid CL cultivars was delayed following imazamox at 44 g ha−1 applied at PI + 14 and midboot. Furthermore, imazamox at 44 g ha−1, applied at midboot, delayed maturity of CLXL745 more than CLXL729. Expressed as a percentage of the weed-free control plots, rough rice yields for CLXL729 were 91% following imazamox at 44 g ha−1 applied at PI + 14, 78% following imazamox at 44 g ha−1 applied at midboot, and 77% for imazamox at 88 g ha−1 applied at PI + 14. Rough rice yield for CLXL745 was 77 to 92% of the control following all imazamox treatments. All imazamox treatments reduced CLXL745 rough rice yield compared with CL161. Rough rice yield, pooled across CL cultivar, varied with imazamox treatment between years, and these differences may have been a consequence of lower temperatures and solar radiation in the first year. Hybrid CL cultivars CLXL729 and CLXL745 were less tolerant than was CL161 when imazamox was applied at nonlabeled rates (88 g ha−1) and/or timings (PI + 14 or midboot). Because of variability in rice growth stages and irregularities in imazamox application in commercial fields, inbred CL cultivars should be planted where an imazamox application will likely be required.

Field experiments were established to investigate the influence of terbufos on the response of five corn hybrids to postemergence applications of CGA-136872. In 1987, Asgrow RX404, Dekalb DK656, Funk's G4673A, and Pioneer P3165 were tolerant to CGA-136872 when no soil insecticides were applied. In 1988, terbufos was applied at 1.1 kg ai ha-1 in-furrow at planting. Injury was observed on all hybrids following CGA-136872 application in 1988. With the exception of Funk's G4307, all hybrids were tolerant to CGA-136872 in 1989 when no soil insecticide was used. When terbufos was applied in-furrow, injury increased with increasing herbicide rate for these hybrids.

An undesirable bermudagrass [Cynodon dacytlon (L.) Pers. # CYNDA] often must be removed before converting to an improved bermudagrass turf or to a different turfgrass species. Because bermudagrass control with glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] has been inconsistent, an experiment was initiated to determine the necessary application rates and frequency for glyphosate and SC-0224 (trimethylsulfonium carboxymethylaminomethylphosphonate) to control bermudagrass. Both glyphosate and SC-0224 applied in three applications (May, June, and August) had controlled three bermudagrass hybrids [Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt-Davy # CYNTR x C. dactylon (L.) Pers. Tifway’, Tifgreen’, and ‘Tifdwarf’] and ‘Ormond’ bermudagrasses when evaluated the next June. None of the cultivars were controlled effectively with either herbicide applied in one (May) or two (May and June) applications regardless of rate. Control with glyphosate and SC-0224 was similar.

Identification of the appropriate use rate is a critical first step in the herbicide development process because use rates affect product utility, market value, and the various risk assessments within the regulatory review process prior to registration. For a given herbicide to be commercially successful, it must provide consistent and sustained efficacy based on a use rate structure that meets customer requirements over a wide range of conditions. Recently, recommendations have been made that advocate the use of herbicide use rates below those outlined on registered product label text. Such advice tends to be based on field work and predictive models designed to identify specific conditions where reduced herbicide use rates are theoretically optimized as dictated by threshold values with assumed levels of commercially acceptable weed control. Unfortunately, many other studies indicate that the use of reduced herbicide rates is not without variability of herbicide efficacy and economic risk. Consequently, reduced use rate theories and related predictive models are often of limited practical value to growers. Aside from inconsistent performance, weed control strategies based on reduced herbicide use rates are not a solution to prevent or even delay target site resistance. In fact, prolonged use of sublethal use rates may select for metabolic resistance and add future weed management challenges by replenishing the weed seed bank. Much effort in terms of development time and resources are invested before product commercialization to ensure that product labels are easily understood and provide value to growers. In this regard, every effort is made to identify the lowest effective use rate that will consistently control target weeds and lead to economic optimization for both the grower and manufacturer.

A study was conducted to evaluate the response of glyphosate- and dicamba-tolerant (GDT) soybean and weed control from cover crop different termination intervals before and after soybean planting. Cover crop biomass was highest when terminated at planting, decreased with the 7- and 14-d preplant (DPP) and day-after-planting (DAP) timings, and again at the 14 DPP and DAP timings. Glyphosate+dicamba provided total control of cover crops by 21 DAP. Cover crop termination timing did not influence soybean population or yield. Palmer amaranth control at the 21 and 28 d after termination (DAT) was 97% to 99%. Differences in Palmer amaranth control were not detected among herbicide programs or termination intervals at the end of season rating, and all treatments provided ≥97% control. Although differences in Palmer amaranth control were not apparent at the end of the season, the delay in cover crop affected the number of days until 10-cm Palmer amaranth was present. When utilizing a wheat+hairy vetch cover crop in DGT soybeans, producers should delay cover crop termination until 11 to 14 DPP and make at least one POST application of glyphosate+dicamba+an additional herbicide mode of action (MOA) to maximize Palmer amaranth control and soybean yields.

Turfgrass weed scientists commonly use visual ratings (VR) to assign a numerical value to a turfgrass or weed response. These ratings lack quantifiable numerical values and are considered subjective. Alternatives to VR, including line intersect analysis (LIA) and digital image analysis (DIA), have been used to varying extents in turfgrass research. Alternatives can be expensive, labor intensive, and can require extensive calibration and increased time for data acquisition. Minimal research has been conducted evaluating rating methods used in turfgrass weed science. Trials were conducted in 2007 and 2008 to evaluate ratings methods used to quantify large crabgrass populations as influenced by tall fescue mowing height (2.5, 5.1, 7.6, and 10.2 cm). Percent large crabgrass cover was assessed utilizing VR, LIA, and DIA to determine if differences existed among evaluation methods. Pairwise comparisons, Pearson's correlation, and linear regression were performed to compare evaluations. All rating methods were significantly correlated to one another. Differences of large crabgrass cover estimates existed between LIA and DIA data at all mowing heights and between VR and DIA data at the 7.6 and 10.2 cm mowing heights in 2007. Authors believe that shadows produced by the turf canopy at higher (≥ 7.6 cm) mowing heights increased DIA estimates of large crabgrass cover. At trial initiation in 2007, researchers did not capture calibration images because the methodology to eliminate a shadow influence using a standard digital image had not been published. Additional DIA calibration in 2008 corrected for canopy shadows, and no differences were observed in large crabgrass cover between all evaluation methods indicated by nonsignificance pairwise comparisons and estimated regression parameters. These data indicate VR are no different than LIA or DIA in estimating large crabgrass cover as affected by tall fescue mowing height.

Yield reductions due to green foxtail competition with hard red spring wheat varied with environment in field experiments conducted in 1984, 1985, and 1986 at Oakes, Langdon, Prosper, and Fargo, North Dakota. Wheat yield reductions ranged from 0 to 47% from 720 green foxtail plants per m2. Inclusion of early season temperature and precipitation, soil texture, and foxtail density into multiple regression analysis of wheat yield reductions significantly increased the coefficient of determination to 0.62 compared with 0.12 for regression based on green foxtail density alone. Wheat yield reduction decreased as green foxtail seeding was delayed after wheat seeding in 1986. Wheat yield generally decreased as time of diclofop application was delayed from 2 to 6 wk after wheat emergence in 1986.

Propane flaming could be an alternative tool for PRE control or suppression of early-emerging weeds in organic and conventional crops. The objective of this study was to test the tolerance of selected early-season weeds to broadcast flaming in no-till systems. Four winter annuals (tansy mustard, henbit, cutleaf evening primrose, and field pennycress), one summer annual (common lambsquarters), and one perennial (dandelion) species were included in the study. Except for dandelion, the response to propane flaming was evaluated at two growth stages. Flaming treatments were applied using an all-terrain-vehicle-mounted flamer moving 4.8 km h−1, and propane pressure was adjusted to deliver doses of 0 (nonflamed control), 22, 34, 48, 67, and 90 kg ha−1. The response of each species to propane doses was described by log-logistic models based on visual ratings of weed control and dry matter reduction. Response to broadcast flaming varied among species and growth stages. Common lambsquarters, tansy mustard, and henbit were more susceptible to flaming than cutleaf evening primrose, field pennycress, and dandelion. On the basis of visual ratings, propane doses between 54 and 62 kg ha−1 effectively controlled (90% control) common lambsquarters at the early growth stage (five-leaf), tansy mustard at both growth stages (nine-leaf and flowering), and henbit (flowering). However, a higher propane dose (> 80 kg ha−1) was necessary to obtain 90% control of common lambsquarters in later growth stage (11-leaf) and early growth stage of henbit (nine-leaf). Cutleaf evening primrose, field pennycress, and dandelion exhibited higher levels of tolerance to broadcast flaming. A 90% control of these species was not achieved even with the highest propane dose (90 kg ha−1) utilized in the study. Results of this study indicate that a single application of broadcast flaming can be an effective tool for controlling tansy mustard, henbit, and common lambsquarters and temporary suppression of cutleaf evening primrose, field pennycress, and dandelion.

Studies were conducted in a screenhouse to determine the interaction of rice residue as mulch (0, 3, and 6 t ha−1) and herbicides (nontreated, oxadiazon at 0.5 and 1.0 kg ai ha−1, and pendimethalin at 1.0 and 2.0 kg ai ha−1) on seedling emergence and biomass of barnyardgrass, crowfootgrass, junglerice, and rice flatsedge. Regardless of the residue amount, crowfootgrass and junglerice were effectively controlled by all herbicide treatments. No seedlings of these weed species escaped the herbicides when applied in the presence of residue cover. There was no survival of barnyardgrass seedlings when both herbicides were applied on bare soil (without residue cover); however, some seedlings survived oxadiazon and pendimethalin when applied in the presence of residue cover. For rice flatsedge, the herbicide applications in the presence of residue cover resulted in lower weed control than in the absence of residue. These results suggest that some weed species can escape the application of PRE herbicides in conservation agriculture systems in which residue can bind soil-applied herbicides and result in lower efficacy.
