Field and laboratory studies were conducted from 1993 to 1997 to determine the feasibility of controlling nodding broomrape in sunflower by treating crop seeds with pronamide. Soaking sunflower seeds for 5 min in 50% pronamide solution or coating at the equivalent of 2 kg/ha with pronamide did not impair seed germination or seedling growth, and controlled nodding broomrape 49 to 68% and 51 to 77%, respectively, up to 105 d after planting. Studies of the effect of treated sunflower seeds on germination and seedling growth, at several time intervals after the herbicide application (0, 30, 60, and 90 d after treatment [DAT]), were conducted. Soaking with 50% solution or coating at 2 kg/ha reduced seedling growth by 20 and 24% 60 DAT, respectively, compared with the control.

The importance of tall fescue as a pasture grass is diminished when infected with the fescue endophyte. The availability of fungus-free seed has necessitated the development of systems to kill the infected sod before interseeding fungus-free seed. Field studies were conducted to evaluate the response of fescue sod to foliar-applied herbicides as single and sequential applications during the fall and spring. Sequential applications of paraquat at 0.14, 0.28, and 0.56 kg ai/ha in September and October and glyphosate at 0.84 and 1.7 kg/ha applied as single or sequential applications in September and October resulted in more than 90% kill of the tall fescue sod. Spring treatments of paraquat and glyphosate were less effective than those applied in the fall. Dalapon, fluazifop-P, HOE-39866 [glufosinate (proposed name)], sethoxydim, and simazine did not effectively kill the sod.

With few exceptions, north temperate North American weeds are native species that have proliferated following site disturbance. Social pressures are rapidly eroding the availability of essential silvicultural tools such as chemical herbicides and prescribed burning. Biological control with microorganisms in forestry is at an early stage of development. An inoculation strategy involving a fungus pathogen (PFC-082: Nectria ditissima Tul./ALDERKILL™), its formulation for biological control of Alnus rubra Bong. in the form of the PFC-MYCOCHARGE™ and a newly devised instrument for bioherbicide delivery into woody stems (PFC-ALDERWAK™) are described. The overall strategy and implements are potentially useful for the delivery of any biological or translocatable material into amenity or orchard trees as well. PFC-082 was the single isolate of N. ditissima tested that produced 100% infection and incited the formation of red alder cankers longer than 0.5 m in 30 mo when inoculated by the method described herein. Natural infections by this pathogen occur on fewer than 1% of red alder stems in the forest.

S-metolachlor was compared with metolachlor at four field locations in Texas during the 1996 and 1997 growing seasons in terms of yellow nutsedge control, peanut injury, and peanut yield. S-metolachlor caused peanut injury comparable to metolachlor when either herbicide was applied preplant incorporated or preemergence. Yellow nutsedge control was similar and peanut yields were comparable with the two herbicides. At one location where yellow nutsedge failed to develop, the untreated check produced one of the highest yields.

Field studies were conducted to evaluate the tolerance of peanut cultivars ‘Florunner’, ‘Georgia Green’, ‘Sunoleic 95R’, ‘AgriTech GK7’, ‘NC-7’, ‘ViruGard’, and ‘Spanco’ to sulfentraone. Herbicide treatments included sulfentrazone applied as a single treatment preemergence (PRE) at 0.14, 0.21, 0.28, 0.35, or 0.42 kg ai/ha or as a PRE followed by (fb) an at cracking (AC) application (0.14 kg ai/ha PRE fb 0.14 kg ai/ha AC, 0.21 kg ai/ha PRE fb 0.14 kg ai/ha AC, 0.21 kg ai/ha PRE fb 0.21 kg ai/ha AC, 0.28 kg ai/ha PRE fb 0.07 kg ai/ha AC, or 0.28 kg ai/ha PRE fb 0.14 kg ai/ha AC). Imazapic and paraquat applied early postemergence (EPOT) were included along with a weed-free control. NC-7 exhibited higher early-season injury (ranging from 1 to 29%) than other cultivars across all sulfentrazone applications. However, this injury did not affect yield when compared with the untreated weed-free check. Overall, peanut tolerance to sulfentrazone was high across all varieties.

When tank mixed with certain boadleaf-selective herbicides, fluazifop {(+)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid}, sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one}, haloxyfop {2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid}, and fluazifop-P {(R)-2-[4-[[5-trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} were less effective in controlling two annual grasses, Texas panicum (Panicum texanum Buckl. #3 PANTE) and large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. # DIGSA]. These herbicides were applied alone or were combined with the broadleaf-selective herbicides bentazon {3-(1-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,l,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one-2,2-dioxide} and/or 2,4-DB [4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)butanoic acid]. The herbicide combinations controlled smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus L. # AMACH) and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L. #CYPES). Increasing the rates of the grass-selective herbicides in the mixture reduced the adverse effects of 2,4-DB or bentazon.

Fenoxaprop applied between late winter and mid-spring selectively controlled roughstalk bluegrass in perennial ryegrass grown for seed in Oregon. Fenoxaprop applied after the arrival of warmer weather in late March had enhanced effectiveness against roughstalk bluegrass compared to earlier application. However, additional delay into April increased damage to perennial ryegrass. Optimum application date coincided with a 15- to 18-cm perennial ryegrass canopy height. Mixed stands of seedling and established roughstalk bluegrass were more consistently controlled by 0.28 kg ai/ha fenoxaprop than by lower rates.

Pyridate was evaluated alone and as a component in herbicide systems for weed control and peanut tolerance. Pyridate at 1.0 and 1.5 kg ai ha-1 applied postemergence controlled 79 and 96% of Florida beggarweed, respectively. Pyridate was less effective on sicklepod than 2,4-DB. Peanuts exhibited no visible foliar injury or yield reduction with pyridate at 1.5 kg ha-1, the highest rate evaluated. Comprehensive weed control and maximum yield required that pyridate be tank mixed with 2,4-DB at 0.22 kg ae ha-1.

A field experiment was conducted during three cropping seasons to compare weed control and cotton yield provided by conventional (CV), glufosinate-resistant (LL), and glyphosate-resistant (RR) weed management systems under standard (102 cm) and narrow (38 cm) row spacing grown in conventional and conservation tillage systems. The conventional tillage and/or CV cotton received a PRE application of pendimethalin. The CV, LL, and RR cotton varieties received two POST applications of pyrithiobac, glufosinate, and glyphosate, respectively, at two- and four-leaf cotton growth stages. A final (LAYBY) application of trifloxysulfuron was applied to 38-cm row cotton while a LAYBY POST-directed spray of prometryn plus MSMA was used in 102-cm row cotton. The LL and RR weed management systems controlled at least 97% of large crabgrass, Palmer amaranth, sicklepod, and smallflower morningglory, while the CV system controlled 89, 73, and 87 to 98% of large crabgrass, smallflower morningglory, and Palmer amaranth, respectively. Sicklepod control increased from 85% in 102-cm rows to 95% in 38-cm rows in the CV herbicide system. Yellow nutsedge and pitted morningglory control exceeded 98% and was not affected by tillage, row spacing, or weed management system. Cotton yield was not affected by row spacing any year, by tillage in 2005, or by weed management system in 2004 and 2005. In 2006, yield in the RR weed management system was 27 and 24% higher than LL and CV weed management systems, respectively. In 2004, yield of conventional tillage cotton was 18% higher than conservation tillage cotton, but in 2006 the yield in conservation tillage was 12% higher than conventional tillage.

The isopropylamine salt of glyphosate at 420, 560, and 840 g ae/ha applied alone or mixed with the sodium salt of bentazon at 840 g ai/ha, chlorimuron at 9 g ai/ha, the sodium salt of fomesafen at 350 g ai/ha, or the ammonium salt of imazethapyr at 70 g ae/ha was evaluated for control of large crabgrass and broadleaf signalgrass. Neither grass was controlled by bentazon, fomesafen, or chlorimuron. Imazethapyr controlled large crabgrass and broadleaf signalgrass 30 and 72%, respectively, 3 weeks after treatment (WAT). Glyphosate at all rates controlled both grasses 100%. Control 3 WAT was unaffected by mixing bentazon, chlorimuron, fomesafen, or imazethapyr with glyphosate. Broadleaf signalgrass control 1 WAT was reduced 4 to 15% by mixing bentazon with glyphosate.

In 12 trials in Louisiana, sicklepod, entireleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, and hemp sesbania control 4 wk after planting was greater with trifluralin applied PPI followed by chlorimuron plus metribuzin applied PRE than with trifluralin plus flumetsulam applied PPI. Sicklepod control with these herbicides was similar 6 wk after application. No differences in soybean yield were noted. Chlorimuron applied POST following trifluralin applied PPI and metribuzin applied PRE or trifluralin plus flumetsulam applied PPI improved weed control and soybean yield compared with soil-applied herbicides alone. Excellent barnyardgrass control was obtained with all herbicide programs.

Field experiments were conducted in 1996, 1997, and 1998 to evaluate weed control and corn tolerance from soil-applied RPA 201772. Treatments alone and in tank mixtures with other corn herbicides were applied preemergence (PRE) at two locations with conventional tillage and at early preplant (EPP) and PRE application timings in no-tillage corn. RPA 201772 was applied alone and in tank mixtures with one-half the typical field rates of other PRE corn herbicides. In conventional tillage experiments in 1996, 1997, and at one location in 1998, all treatments containing RPA 201772 provided > 90% control of common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, common ragweed, and velvetleaf. In two no-tillage experiments, common lambsquarters and velvetleaf control was > 90%, regardless of application timing. However, control of redroot pigweed and common ragweed varied among years and application timings. Weed control was more variable from herbicide treatments applied EPP compared with the PRE application timing. Giant foxtail control in both tillage systems was rate, timing, and year dependent. RPA 201772 rates higher than 79 g/ha controlled giant foxtail > 85% at three of five locations. At one location, tank mixtures with RPA 201772 increased giant foxtail control. Corn injury occurred in one of two conventional tillage locations and at the no-tillage location in both 1996 and 1997. Injury was most commonly observed in coarse-textured soils with low clay and organic matter and was more severe with higher rates of RPA 201772. Increased corn injury was also observed when RPA 201772 was combined with acetochlor plus dicloramid or BAYFOE 5043 plus metribuzin. Corn injury from RPA 201772 occurred at application rates above the proposed rate for use on corn. In some cases, severe injury to corn reduced corn yield. Injury to corn from RPA 201772 was not unique to any tillage system and was site, year, and rate dependent.

The effects of tracking by tractor wheels on the emergence of common weed species of central Iowa were studied near Ames, IA, in 1996 and 1997. Seedling emergence in tracked and nontracked interrow areas, soil water content, and soil temperature were monitored for 8 to 10 wk after planting of soybean (Glycine max). Compared to nontracked interrow areas, a single wheel-tracking pass at crop planting increased the cumulative number of seedlings of giant (Setaria faberi) and yellow foxtails (S. glauca) by 187%, common waterhemp (Amaranthus rudis) by 102%, and common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) by 30%. There was little effect of wheel traffic on velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) emergence. After planting, soil water content to a depth of 5 cm was higher in tracked areas than in nontracked areas, but after 6 wk there was no difference. Soil temperature at 4- to 5-cm depth was similar in tracked and nontracked interrows. Compaction from wheel traffic apparently did not create a physical impediment to emergence; rather, it altered micro-environmental conditions in ways that stimulated weed germination and emergence.

Cover crops have increased in popularity in midwestern U.S. corn and soybean systems in recent years. However, little research has been conducted to evaluate how cover crops and residual herbicides are effectively integrated together for weed control in a soybean production system. Field studies were conducted in 2016 and 2017 to evaluate summer annual weed control and to determine the effect of cover crop biomass on residual herbicide reaching the soil. The herbicide treatments consisted of preplant (PP) applications of glyphosate plus 2,4-D with or without sulfentrazone plus chlorimuron at two different timings, 21 and 7 d prior to soybean planting (DPP). Cover crops evaluated included winter vetch, cereal rye, Italian ryegrass, oat, Austrian winter pea, winter wheat, and a winter vetch plus cereal rye mixture. Herbicide treatments were applied to tilled and nontilled soil without cover crop for comparison. The tillage treatment resulted in low weed biomass at all collection intervals after both application timings, which corresponded to tilled soil having the highest sulfentrazone concentration (171 ng g−1) compared with all cover crop treatments. When applied PP, herbicide treatments applied 21 DPP with sulfentrazone had greater weed (93%) and waterhemp (89%) control than when applied 7 DPP (60% and 69%, respectively). When applied POST, herbicide treatments with a residual herbicide resulted in greater weed and waterhemp control at 7 DPP (83% and 77%, respectively) than at 21 DPP (74% and 61%, respectively). Herbicide programs that included a residual herbicide had the highest soybean yields (≥3,403 kg ha−1). Results from this study indicate that residual herbicides can be effectively integrated either PP or POST in conjunction with cover crop termination applications, but termination timing and biomass accumulation will affect the amount of sulfentrazone reaching the soil.

The recent interest in cover crops as a component of Midwest corn and soybean production systems has led to a greater need to understand the most effective herbicide treatments for cover crop termination prior to planting corn or soybean. Previous research has shown that certain cover crop species can significantly reduce subsequent cash crop yields if not completely terminated. Two field experiments were conducted in 2013, 2014, and 2015 to determine the most effective herbicide program for the termination of winter wheat, cereal rye, crimson clover, Austrian winter pea, annual ryegrass, and hairy vetch; and cover crops were terminated in early April or early May. Visual control and above ground biomass reduction was determined 28 d after application (DAA). Control of grass cover crop species was often best with glyphosate alone or combined with 2,4-D, dicamba, or saflufenacil. The most consistent control of broadleaf cover crops occurred following treatment with glyphosate +2,4-D, dicamba, or saflufenacil. In general, control of cover crops was higher with early April applications compared to early May. In a separate study, control of 15-, 25-, and 75-cm tall annual ryegrass was highest with glyphosate at 2.8 kg ha−1 or glyphosate at 1.4 kg ha−1 plus clethodim at 0.136 kgha−1. Paraquat- or glufosinate-containing treatments did not provide adequate annual ryegrass control. For practitioners who desire higher levels of cover crop biomass, these results indicate that adequate levels of cover crop control can still be achieved in the late spring with certain herbicide treatments. But it is important to consider cover crop termination well in advance to ensure the most effective herbicide or herbicide combinations are used and the products are applied at the appropriate stage.

Acetochlor (WSSA Group 15) is a very-long-chain fatty acid–inhibiting herbicide used to control grass weed species in row crops and could potentially be effective when used in a rice herbicide program. A field study was conducted in 2016 and 2017 at four locations to determine the effects of acetochlor formulation and rate on rice tolerance. Overall, rice was more tolerant to the microencapsulated (ME) formulation of acetochlor than to the emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation, likely because of the potential for immediate absorption of acetochlor from the EC formulation following rainfall. Differences in rainfall among experimental sites and years caused variation in acetochlor activation and influenced crop injury. In all environments, PRE applications of either formulation resulted in the greatest injury at 2 WAT (61%), while injury following delayed PRE (DPRE) or early POST (EPOST) applications averaged 30% and 16%, respectively. When ME acetochlor was applied EPOST, rough rice yield was 97% of nontreated rice or 9,020 kg ha−1, indicating that applications should be delayed until this stage to minimize crop damage and maximize yield.

Effects of repeated late-fall applications of the isopropylamine salt of glyphosate at 1.7 kg ae/ha plus 0.5% (v/v) surfactant on adventitious root buds, thickened propagative roots (> 1.3 mm diam), and shoot density of Canada thistle were studied in continuous hard red spring wheat over a 4-yr period. Glyphosate suppressed Canada thistle shoot density more quickly and to a greater extent than thickened root fresh weight or root bud number. A single fall application of glyphosate drastically decreased Canada thistle shoot density for 1 yr after treatment. However, shoot density was the same as the untreated control by 2 yr after a single fall treatment. Two consecutive late-fall applications of glyphosate in 2 yr decreased Canada thistle shoot density 94% in the fall 1 yr after the last treatment. Glyphosate reduced Canada thistle thickened root fresh weight 70% in the first fall 1 yr after a single fall treatment. However, 2 yr after a single fall application of glyphosate, root fresh weight equalled the controls. Two consecutive fall applications of glyphosate reduced thickened root fresh weight 77% 1 yr after the second treatment.

In weed science literature, models such as concentration addition, independent action, effect summation, and the parallel line assay technique have been used to predict and analyze whole-plant response to herbicide mixtures. Although a joint action reference model is necessary for determining whether the herbicide mixture provides less than (antagonistic), equal to (zero-interaction or additive), or greater than (synergistic) expected control, model selection often occurs with little regard to the model's underlying biological assumptions. The joint action models of concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) are the appropriate models to consider for analysis of herbicide mixtures of two active components. CA assumes additivity of dose, with herbicides differing only in potency, whereas IA assumes multiplicativity of effects, in which herbicides behave independently and sequentially within the plant. CA and IA predicted mixture responses were computed for a sample mixture data set of mesotrione plus atrazine. IA predicted lower mixture responses than CA; for example, mesotrione at 17.5 g ha−1 + atrazine at 140 g ha−1 was predicted to provide 45% (IA) compared with 53% (CA) control of Palmer amaranth. Joint action claims of synergism and antagonism were shown to be dependent on the reference model selected. Although mesotrione plus atrazine combinations were synergistic under IA assumptions, analysis under CA assumptions indicated mesotrione plus atrazine to be synergistic, additive, and antagonistic according to the selected effective concentration (ECx ) level and fixed-ratio mixture. Because it is not possible to determine the appropriate joint action model on the basis of fit of predicted to observed mixture data, the appropriateness of underlying biological assumptions was considered for the sample mixture data set. Additionally, we provide decision criteria to aid researchers in their selection of an appropriate joint action reference model.

Field studies were conducted from 1991 through 1994 in several locations of Southern Spain to determine the efficacy of imazapyr as late postemergence application in sunflower for broomrape control and the crop response to this herbicide under weed-free conditions. Single applications of imazapyr at 10 to 15 g/ha on sunflower plants at about the V12 (12 leaves) to V19 (19 leaves) growth stages, infected with broomrape plants at the predominant growth stages “c” (small nodule with shoot bud visible) and “d” (shoot bud and roots well developed), resulted in effective control without damaging the crop. Double applications of imazapyr at 10 + 10 g/ha at about the same crop growth stages V12 to V19, at a time interval of 12 to 14 d between single applications, were also efficacious and well tolerated by the crop. The same herbicide treatments applied to weed-free sunflower did not adversely affect the biomass, head diameter or yield of the crop as compared with the nontreated check. As a result of the low rate of imazapyr required for broomrape control, the herbicide treatments are economical (about $3 to $6/ha), non-residual and not affected by the type of soil texture and rainfall conditions.

An isolate of the fungus Dactylaria higginsii obtained from purple nutsedge in Florida was highly pathogenic to Cyperus spp. The potential of this isolate as a bioherbicide was field tested in natural populations of purple nutsedge in Gainesville and Jay, FL. The fungus was applied in 0.5% Metamucil® as a carrier, and the treatments were: carrier only, 105 conidia/ml + carrier, and 106 conidia/ml + carrier. Treatments were applied as single, double, or triple postemergence (POST) sprays at biweekly intervals. The disease and secondary infections developed in about 5 and 15 d after inoculation, respectively, killing most of the infected leaves. All weed growth parameters and disease progress rates were affected by inoculum dosage and inoculation frequencies. Three inoculations, each at 106 conidia/ml, provided effective control of purple nutsedge compared to a single inoculation, as measured by shoot dry weight, tuber numbers, and tuber dry weight. Higher rates of disease progress and disease levels, defined by the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), occurred with three inoculations at 106 conidia/ml. Disease progress was slower and the level of weed control was lower at 105 conidia/ml compared to the higher inoculum level. Three applications of 106 conidia/ml provided >90% nutsedge control. Dactylaria higginsii appears to be an effective bioherbicide candidate deserving further development for commercial use.
