The journal has been established to improve the future challenges in the dissemination of knowledge and to address the developing areas within the animal biosciences. Whilst it represents a merging of three scientific journals, the vision is to develop a completely new entity which seeks to attract the best research in animal biology and animal systems from across the spectrum of the agricultural, biomedical and environmental sciences. The concept is not exclusive and the three partners invite other journals to join this initiative and to rationalise the publishing of knowledge from the animal biosciences.
The aim is to make ANIMAL a major international force in the animal science sector and to raise the profile and standing of integrative biology alongside more specialist disciplines. It will recognise that there is a need not only to integrate between the molecular, cellular, organ and whole animal components of the system but also that livestock farming systems link the animal with its environment and with people.
The success of the new journal will depend to a major extent on the commitment of animal scientists in submitting high quality papers to the new journal. It is published by Cambridge University Press (a not-for-profit organisation) and it is your journal, produced entirely for the benefit of scientists.
In this first issue there are a number of horizon scanning reviews as well as original research articles. They are arranged nominally in sections:
Animal Breeding and Genetics
Nutrition
Physiology and Functional Biology of Systems
Behaviour, Health and Welfare Livestock Farming Systems and Environmental Impact
Product Quality, Human Health and Well-being
However, with time we see these evolving as the direction of science changes in response to the new challenges.
