Chapter III. The World Economy in 1961

Abstract

This chapter first describes the internal developments during 1961 in the major industrial countries overseas. It then discusses conditions in the primary producing countries, trends in world trade in manufactures (including British exports) and concludes with a discussion of changes in the pattern of the balance of payments between major countries and areas.

The seasonally adjusted index published by the Deutsche Bundes bank moves fairly closely with the OECD index and the confidence limits published by the Bank imply that the third quarter fall was large enough to be statistically significant.
