About the series:

Focusing on the flourishing field of war studies (broadly defined to include social, cultural and political perspectives), Elements in Modern Wars examine the forms, manifestations, and legacies of violence in global contexts from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. The Elements offer innovative takes on important aspects of the history of armed conflicts, ranging from inter-state wars to civil wars, from revolutions to genocide, as well as thematically focused contributions on important subjects such as gender, colonial conflicts and insurgencies, humanitarian interventions, and others. The series aims to broaden the field’s thematic and geographical focus by combining coverage of perennial topics such as the two world wars with attention to lesser-studied conflicts around the world.

Biography: 
Robert Gerwarth is Professor of Modern History at University College Dublin and Director of UCD’s Centre for War Studies. He has published widely on the history of political violence in twentieth-century Europe, including an award-winning history of the aftermath of the Great War, The Vanquished, and a critically acclaimed biography of Reinhard Heydrich, the chief organizer of the Holocaust. He is also the general editor of Oxford University Press’s Greater War series, and, with Jay Winter, general editor of Cambridge University Press’s Studies in the Social and Cultural History of Modern Warfare series.
