For certain quasismooth Calabi–Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective space, the Berglund-Hübsch-Krawitz (BHK) mirror symmetry construction gives a concrete description of the mirror. We prove that the minimal log discrepancy of the quotient of such a hypersurface by its toric automorphism group is closely related to the weights and degree of the BHK mirror. As an application, we exhibit klt Calabi–Yau varieties with the smallest known minimal log discrepancy. We conjecture that these examples are optimal in every dimension.

Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic $p$ whose tangent bundle is nef. We prove that $X$ admits a smooth morphism $X \to M$ such that the fibers are Fano varieties with nef tangent bundle and $T_M$ is numerically flat. We also prove that extremal contractions exist as smooth morphisms. As an application, we prove that, if the Frobenius morphism can be lifted modulo $p^2$, then $X$ admits, up to a finite étale Galois cover, a smooth morphism onto an ordinary abelian variety whose fibers are products of projective spaces.

We study lc pairs polarized by a nef and log big divisor. After proving the minimal model theory for projective lc pairs polarized by a nef and log big divisor, we prove the effectivity of the Iitaka fibrations and some boundedness results for dlt pairs polarized by a nef and log big divisor.

Let $\pi \colon \mathcal {X}\to B$ be a family whose general fibre $X_b$ is a $(d_1,\,\ldots,\,d_a)$-polarization on a general abelian variety, where $1\leq d_i\leq 2$, $i=1,\,\ldots,\,a$ and $a\geq 4$. We show that the fibres are in the same birational class if all the $(m,\,0)$-forms on $X_b$ are liftable to $(m,\,0)$-forms on $\mathcal {X}$, where $m=1$ and $m=a-1$. Actually, we show a general criteria to establish whether the fibres of certain families belong to the same birational class.

Let $f: X \to B$ be a relatively minimal fibration of maximal Albanese dimension from a variety X of dimension $n \ge 2$ to a curve B defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove that $K_{X/B}^n \ge 2n! \chi _f$ . It verifies a conjectural formulation of Barja in [2]. Via the strategy outlined in [4], it also leads to a new proof of the Severi inequality for varieties of maximal Albanese dimension. Moreover, when the equality holds and $\chi _f> 0$ , we prove that the general fibre F of f has to satisfy the Severi equality that $K_F^{n-1} = 2(n-1)! \chi (F, \omega _F)$ . We also prove some sharper results of the same type under extra assumptions.

Let $f\colon X\to B$ be a semistable fibration where X is a smooth variety of dimension $n\geq 2$ and B is a smooth curve. We give the structure theorem for the local system of the relative $1$ -forms and of the relative top forms. This gives a neat interpretation of the second Fujita decomposition of $f_*\omega _{X/B}$ . We apply our interpretation to show the existence, up to base change, of higher irrational pencils and on the finiteness of the associated monodromy representations under natural Castelnuovo-type hypothesis on local subsystems. Finally, we give a criterion to have that X is not of Albanese general type if $B=\mathbb {P}^1$ .

The general position hypothesis needs strengthening.

In this note, using methods introduced by Hacon et al. [‘Boundedness of varieties of log general type’, Proceedings of Symposia in Pure Mathematics, Volume 97 (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2018) 309–348], we study the accumulation points of volumes of varieties of log general type. First, we show that if the set of boundary coefficients Λ satisfies the descending chain condition (DCC), is closed under limits and contains 1, then the corresponding set of volumes satisfies the DCC and is closed under limits. Then, we consider the case of ε-log canonical varieties, for 0 < ε < 1. In this situation, we prove that if Λ is finite, then the corresponding set of volumes is discrete.

Let $X$ be a normal complex projective variety, $T\subseteq X$ a subvariety of dimension $m$ (possibly $T=X$) and $a:X\rightarrow A$ a morphism to an abelian variety such that $\text{Pic}^{0}(A)$ injects into $\text{Pic}^{0}(T)$; let $L$ be a line bundle on $X$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in \text{Pic}^{0}(A)$ a general element.

We introduce two new ingredients for the study of linear systems on $X$. First of all, we show the existence of a factorization of the map $a$, called the eventual map of $L$ on $T$, which controls the behavior of the linear systems $|L\otimes \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}|_{|T}$, asymptotically with respect to the pullbacks to the connected étale covers $X^{(d)}\rightarrow X$ induced by the $d$-th multiplication map of $A$.

Second, we define the so-called continuous rank function$x\mapsto h_{a}^{0}(X_{|T},L+xM)$, where $M$ is the pullback of an ample divisor of $A$. This function extends to a continuous function of $x\in \mathbb{R}$, which is differentiable except possibly at countably many points; when $X=T$ we compute the left derivative explicitly.

As an application, we give quick short proofs of a wide range of new Clifford–Severi inequalities, i.e., geographical bounds of the form

We consider compact Kählerian manifolds $X$ of even dimension 4 or more, endowed with a log-symplectic holomorphic Poisson structure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1}$ which is sufficiently general, in a precise linear sense, with respect to its (normal-crossing) degeneracy divisor $D(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1})$. We prove that $(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1})$ has unobstructed deformations, that the tangent space to its deformation space can be identified in terms of the mixed Hodge structure on $H^{2}$ of the open symplectic manifold $X\setminus D(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1})$, and in fact coincides with this $H^{2}$ provided the Hodge number $h_{X}^{2,0}=0$, and finally that the degeneracy locus $D(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1})$ deforms locally trivially under deformations of $(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F1})$.

For a hyper-Kähler manifold deformation equivalent to a generalized Kummer manifold, we prove that the action of the automorphism group on the total Betti cohomology group is faithful. This is a sort of generalization of a work of Beauville and a more recent work of Boissière, Nieper-Wisskirchen, and Sarti, concerning the action of the automorphism group of a generalized Kummer manifold on the second cohomology group.

In this paper a new geometric characterization of the $n$th symmetric product of a curve is given. Specifically, we assume that there exists a chain of smooth subvarieties $V_{i}$ of dimension $i$, such that $V_{i}$ is an ample divisor in $V_{i+1}$ and its intersection product with $V_{1}$ is one; that the Albanese dimension of $V_{2}$ is $2$ and the genus of $V_{1}$ is equal to the irregularity of the variety. We prove that in this case the variety is isomorphic to the symmetric product of a curve.

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety, and let $H\,\in \,\text{Pic}\left( X \right)$ be an ample line bundle. Assume that $X$ is covered by rational curves with degree one with respect to $H$ and with anticanonical degree greater than or equal to $\left( \dim\,X\,-\,1 \right)/2$. We prove that there is a covering family of such curves whose numerical class spans an extremal ray in the cone of curves $\text{NE}\left( X \right)$.

We give bounds for the Betti numbers of projective algebraic varieties in terms of their classes (degrees of dual varieties of successive hyperplane sections). We also give bounds for classes in terms of ramification volumes (mixed ramification degrees), sectional genus and, eventually, in terms of dimension, codimension and degree. For varieties whose degree is large with respect to codimension, we give sharp bounds for the above invariants and classify the varieties on the boundary, thus obtaining a generalization of Castelnuovo’s theory for curves to varieties of higher dimension.

A foliation on a non-singular projective variety is algebraically integrable if all leaves are algebraic subvarieties. A non-singular hypersurface X in a non-singular projective variety M equipped with a symplectic form has a naturally defined foliation, called the characteristic foliation on X. We show that if X is of general type and dim M≥4, then the characteristic foliation on X cannot be algebraically integrable. This is a consequence of a more general result on Iitaka dimensions of certain invertible sheaves associated with algebraically integrable foliations by curves. The latter is proved using the positivity of direct image sheaves associated to families of curves.

Using the $\sharp$-minimal model program of uniruled varieties we show that, for any pair $(X, {\mathcal H})$ consisting of a reduced and irreducible variety $X$ of dimension $k \geq 3$ and a globally generated big line bundle ${\mathcal H}$ on $X$ with $d:= {\mathcal H}^k$ and $n:= h^0(X, {\mathcal H})-1$ such that $d<2(n-k)-4$, then $X$ is uniruled of ${\mathcal H}$-degree one, except if $(k,d,n)=(3,27,19)$ and a ${\sharp}$-minimal model of $(X, {\mathcal H})$ is $({\mathbb P}^3,{\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb P}^3}(3))$. We also show that the bound is optimal for threefolds.

We give a characterization of products of projective spaces using unsplit covering families of rational curves.

Let X be an irreducible projective variety of dimension n in a projective space and let x be a point of X. Denote by Curvesd(X, x) the space of curves of degree d lying on X and passing through x. We will show that the number of components of Curvesd(X, x) for any smooth point x outside a subvariety of codimension $\geq 2$ is bounded by a number depending only on n and d. An effective bound is given. A key ingredient of the proof is an argument from Ein, Küchle and Lazarsfeld's work on Seshadri numbers.

A line bundle over a complex projective variety is called big and 1-ample if a large multiple of it is generated by global sections and a morphism induced by the evaluation of the spanning sections is generically finite and has at most 1-dimensional fibers. A vector bundle is called big and 1-ample if the relative hyperplane line bundle over its projectivisation is big and 1-ample.

The main theorem of the present paper asserts that any complex projective manifold of dimension 4 or more, whose tangent bundle is big and 1-ample, is equal either to a projective space or to a smooth quadric. Since big and 1-ample bundles are ‘almost’ ample, the present result is yet another extension of the celebrated Mori paper ‘Projective manifolds with ample tangent bundles’ (Ann. of Math. 110 (1979) 593–606).

The proof of the theorem applies results about contractions of complex symplectic manifolds and of manifolds whose tangent bundles are numerically effective. In the appendix we re-prove these results.

We investigate period maps of polarized variations of Hodge structures of weight one or two. We treat the case when the period domains are bounded symmetric domains. We deal with a relationship between canonical extensions of some Hodge bundles and automorphic forms. As applications, we obtain a canonical bundle formula for certain algebraic fiber spaces, such as Abelian fibrations, K3 fibrations, and solve Iitaka’s famous conjecture Cn,m for some algebraic fiber spaces.
