In Cartan’s PhD thesis, there is a formula defining a certain rank 8 vector distribution in dimension 15, whose algebra of authomorphism is the split real form of the simple exceptional complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak {f}_4$. Cartan’s formula is written in the standard Cartesian coordinates in $\mathbb {R}^{15}$. In the present paper, we explain how to find analogous formulae for the flat models of any bracket generating distribution $\mathcal D$ whose symbol algebra $\mathfrak {n}({\mathcal D})$ is constant and 2-step graded, $\mathfrak {n}({\mathcal D})=\mathfrak {n}_{-2}\oplus \mathfrak {n}_{-1}$.

The formula is given in terms of a solution to a certain system of linear algebraic equations determined by two representations $(\rho ,\mathfrak {n}_{-1})$ and $(\tau ,\mathfrak {n}_{-2})$ of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak {n}_{00}$ contained in the $0$th order Tanaka prolongation $\mathfrak {n}_0$ of $\mathfrak {n}({\mathcal D})$.

Numerous examples are provided, with particular emphasis put on the distributions with symmetries being real forms of simple exceptional Lie algebras $\mathfrak {f}_4$ and $\mathfrak {e}_6$.

Let X be a finite connected poset and K a field. We study the question, when all Lie automorphisms of the incidence algebra I(X, K) are proper. Without any restriction on the length of X, we find only a sufficient condition involving certain equivalence relation on the set of maximal chains of X. For some classes of posets of length one, such as finite connected crownless posets (i.e., without weak crown subposets), crowns, and ordinal sums of two anti-chains, we give a complete answer.

Let F be a field of characteristic different of 2 and let M1|1(F)(+) denote the Jordan superalgebra of 2 × 2 matrices over the field F. The aim of this paper is to classify irreducible (unital and one-sided) Jordan bimodules over the Jordan superalgebra M1|1(F)(+).

Let $R$ be an $n!$-torsion free semiprime ring with involution $*$ and with extended centroid $C$, where $n\,>\,1$ is a positive integer. We characterize $a\,\in \,K$, the Lie algebra of skew elements in $R$, satisfying ${{(\text{a}{{\text{d}}_{a}})}^{n}}\,=\,0$ on $K$. This generalizes both Martindale and Miers’ theorem and the theorem of Brox et al. In order to prove it we first prove that if $a,\,b\,\in \,R$ satisfy ${{(\text{a}{{\text{d}}_{a}})}^{n}}\,=\,\text{a}{{\text{d}}_{b}}$ on $R$, where either $n$ is even or $b\,=\,0$, then ${{(a\,-\,\lambda )}^{[(n+1)/2]}}\,=\,0$ for some $\lambda \,\in \,C$.

Kantor pairs arise naturally in the study of 5-graded Lie algebras. In this article, we introduce and study Kantor pairs with short Peirce gradings and relate themto Lie algebras graded by the root system of type $\text{B}{{\text{C}}_{2}}$. This relationship allows us to define so-called Weyl images of short Peirce graded Kantor pairs. We use Weyl images to construct new examples of Kantor pairs, including a class of infinite dimensional central simple Kantor pairs over a field of characteristic $\ne$ 2 or 3, as well as a family of forms of a split Kantor pair of type ${{\text{E}}_{6}}$.

Symmetry groups of Lie algebras and superalgebras constructed from (∈, δ)-Freudenthal-Kantor triple systems have been studied. In particular, for a special (ε, ε)-Freudenthal–Kantor triple, it is the SL(2) group. Also, the relationship between two constructions of Lie algebras from structurable algebras has been investigated.

A representation of the central extension of the unitary Lie algebra coordinated with a skew Laurent polynomial ring is constructed using vertex operators over an integral ${{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}}$-lattice. The irreducible decomposition of the representation is explicitly computed and described. As a by-product, some fundamental representations of affine Kac–Moody Lie algebra of type $A_{n}^{\left( 2 \right)}$ are recovered by the new method.

We describe an ${{E}_{8}}$ correspondence for the multiplicative eta-products of weight at least 4.

We study the transfer of nondegeneracy between Lie triple systems and their standard Lie algebra envelopes as well as between Kantor pairs, their associated Lie triple systems, and their Lie algebra envelopes. We also show that simple Kantor pairs and Lie triple systems in characteristic 0 are nondegenerate.

In this paper, we discuss a connection between (−1, −1)-Freudenthal–Kantor triple systems, anti-structurable algebras, quasi anti-flexible algebras and give examples of such structures. The paper provides the correspondence and characterization of a bilinear product corresponding a triple product.

We investigate the functors from modules to modules that occur as the summands of tensor powers and the functors from modules to Hopf algebras that occur as natural coalgebra summands of tensor algebras. The main results provide some explicit natural coalgebra summands of tensor algebras. As a consequence, we obtain some decompositions of Lie powers over the general linear groups.

In this paper we discuss the simplicity criteria of (−1,−1)-Freudenthal Kantor triple systems and give examples of such triple systems, from which we can construct some Lie superalgebras. We also show that we can associate a Jordan triple system to any (ε,δ)-Freudenthal Kantor triple system. Further, we introduce the notion of δ-structurable algebras and connect them to (−1,δ)-Freudenthal Kantor triple systems and the corresponding Lie (super)algebra construction.

Associated to any complex simple Lie algebra is a non-reductive complex Lie algebra which we call the intermediate Lie algebra. We propose that these algebras can be included in both the magic square and the magic triangle to give an additional row and column. The extra row and column in the magic square correspond to the sextonions. This is a six-dimensional subalgebra of the split octonions which contains the split quaternions.

The orthogonal projection of the free associative algebra onto the free Lie algebra is afforded by an idempotent in the rational group algebra of the symmetric group ${{S}_{n}}$, in each homogenous degree $n$. We give various characterizations of this Lie idempotent and show that it is uniquely determined by a certain unit in the group algebra of ${{S}_{n-1}}$. The inverse of this unit, or, equivalently, the Gram matrix of the orthogonal projection, is described explicitly. We also show that the Garsia Lie idempotent is not constant on descent classes (in fact, not even on coplactic classes) in ${{S}_{n}}$.

For every field F of characteristic p ≥ 0, we construct an example of a finite dimensional nilpotent F-algebra R whose adjoint group A(R) is not centreby- metabelian, in spite of the fact that R is Lie centre-by-metabelian and satisfies the identities x2p = 0 when p > 2 and x8 > 0 when p = 2. The existence of such algebras answers a question raised by A. E. Zalesskii, and is in contrast to positive results obtained by Krasilnikov, Sharma and Srivastava for Lie metabelian rings and by Smirnov for the class Lie centre-by-metabelian nil-algebras of exponent 4 over a field of characteristic 2 of cardinality at least 4.

In this paper, we calculate the center and the universal covering algebra of the Steinberg unitary Lie algebra stun, where is a unital nonassociative algebra with involution and n ≥ 3.

It is shown that in a certain extensive class of algebras one can associate with each Lie ideal a corresponding associative ideal which facilitates the study of Lie ideals, especially for simple algebras. We apply this construction to obtain new, simpler proofs of some known results of Herstein [10] and others on the Lie structure of associative rings.
