In North America, 40–50 per cent of older adults are actively involved as formal volunteers in providing diverse health and human services. We review empirical studies concerning older adults' motivations for volunteering, as well as the health and morale benefits they derive from this expression of altruism. Knowledge of the exact nature and amount of volunteer activity necessary to produce these effects is limited, and studies have yet to identify the behavioural and psychological mechanisms that are implicated. We propose that older adult volunteers may enjoy good health and longevity because being useful to others instills a sense of being needed and valued. We present several theoretical perspectives on the developmental significance of volunteering, discuss the challenges to volunteerism imposed by the baby boom cohort, and identify future research priorities.

This article studies Durkheim's views on altruism and selfishness and, therefore, on modern individualism. In contrast to Comte and Spencer, Durkheim used these concepts in his empirical work on suicide and then as intellectual tools for explaining his view on the professional and political organization required in a modern democracy. Finaly, the article examines how Durkheim's views were modified by the Durkheimian, notably with Marcel Mauss’ emphasis on interested/desinterested behaviors in gift-giving processes which are the empirical and symbolical roots of social solidarity.

L'amour lorsqu'il est poussé à son paroxysme confine à l'étouffement. Telle est la morale de cet article dans lequel un parent altruiste module son offre de travail en partie pour assurer le meilleur niveau de vie possible à son enfant. Lorsque le travail des parents et celui des enfants sont parfaitement substituables dans la production, ce comportement pousse les salaires à la baisse. Si les salaires horaires sont rigides, l'emploi est rationné et les jeunes sont les premières victimes de ce rationnement. Nous montrons que ce mécanisme est à l'origine de fluctuations endogènes entre chômage et plein emploi lorsque la productivité des travailleurs âgés est négativement influencée par la durée de chômage passée. Nous analysons également le soutien politique pour le salaire minimum lorsque la productivité des jeunes est soumise à un aléa : le salaire minimum, l'offre de travail des vieux et le chômage des jeunes augmentent tous trois avec le facteur d'altruisme.

This paper builds on the class of models studying the game interaction between an altruistic benefactor and a selfish recipient. An altruistic parent's bequest is transferred to his selfish son after the former's death and we assume that it is not a valid collateral for bank loans. This is equivalent to adding a non-negativity constraint on savings to the standard bequest model. A crucial mechanism at work is that the son's choice of a level of action can seriously dwarf his budget set. When Becker's result holds, the credit constraint places an upper bound on the strategic savings of the Samaritan's dilemma type. But the constraint on savings also causes the shrinkage of the validity domain of the Rotten Kid Theorem because it may lead both poor and rich heirs to behave unoptimally from the family point of view.

Nous étudions un modèle à générations imbriquées dans lequel coexistent des agents altruistes et égoïstes qui sont patients ou impatients et dont l'offre de travail est endogène. Cette double hétérogénéité nous permet d'analyser les déterminants économiques qui conduisent, de manière endogène, à l'émergence dans l'économie d'une classe de rentiers. Elle nous permet aussi d'examiner l'impact de l'hypothèse d'altruisme intergénéra-tionnel sur le produit intérieur brut de l'économie.
