We categorify the commutation of Nakajima’s Heisenberg operators $P_{\pm 1}$ andtheir infinitely many counterparts in the quantum toroidal algebra $U_{q_1,q_2}(\ddot {gl_1})$ acting on the Grothendieck groups of Hilbert schemes from [10, 24, 26, 32]. By combining our result with [26], one obtains a geometric categorical $U_{q_1,q_2}(\ddot {gl_1})$ action on the derived category of Hilbert schemes. Our main technical tool is a detailed geometric study of certain nested Hilbert schemes of triples and quadruples, through the lens of the minimal model program, by showing that these nested Hilbert schemes are either canonical or semidivisorial log terminal singularities.

The aim of this paper is to determine a bound of the dimension of an irreducible component of the Hilbert scheme of the moduli space of torsion-free sheaves on surfaces. Let X be a nonsingular irreducible complex surface, and let E be a vector bundle of rank n on X. We use the m-elementary transformation of E at a point $x \in X$ to show that there exists an embedding from the Grassmannian variety $\mathbb{G}(E_x,m)$ into the moduli space of torsion-free sheaves $\mathfrak{M}_{X,H}(n;\,c_1,c_2+m)$ which induces an injective morphism from $X \times M_{X,H}(n;\,c_1,c_2)$ to $Hilb_{\, \mathfrak{M}_{X,H}(n;\,c_1,c_2+m)}$.

Hilbert schemes are an object arising from geometry and are closely related to physics and modular forms. Recently, there have been investigations from number theorists about the Betti numbers and Hodge numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points of an algebraic surface. In this paper, we prove that Göttsche's generating function of the Hodge numbers of Hilbert schemes of $n$ points of an algebraic surface is algebraic at a CM point $\tau$ and rational numbers $z_1$ and $z_2$. Our result gives a refinement of the algebraicity on Betti numbers.

In this short paper, we combine the representability theorem introduced in [Porta and Yu, Representability theorem in derived analytic geometry, preprint, 2017, arXiv:1704.01683; Porta and Yu, Derived Hom spaces in rigid analytic geometry, preprint, 2018, arXiv:1801.07730] with the theory of derived formal models introduced in [António, $p$-adic derived formal geometry and derived Raynaud localization theorem, preprint, 2018, arXiv:1805.03302] to prove the existence representability of the derived Hilbert space $\mathbf{R}\text{Hilb}(X)$ for a separated $k$-analytic space $X$. Such representability results rely on a localization theorem stating that if $\mathfrak{X}$ is a quasi-compact and quasi-separated formal scheme, then the $\infty$-category $\text{Coh}^{-}(\mathfrak{X}^{\text{rig}})$ of almost perfect complexes over the generic fiber can be realized as a Verdier quotient of the $\infty$-category $\text{Coh}^{-}(\mathfrak{X})$. Along the way, we prove several results concerning the $\infty$-categories of formal models for almost perfect modules on derived $k$-analytic spaces.

We express nested Hilbert schemes of points and curves on a smooth projective surface as ‘virtual resolutions’ of degeneracy loci of maps of vector bundles on smooth ambient spaces. We show how to modify the resulting obstruction theories to produce the virtual cycles of Vafa–Witten theory and other sheaf-counting problems. The result is an effective way of calculating invariants (VW, SW, local PT and local DT) via Thom–Porteous-like Chern class formulae.

We discuss the geometry of rational maps from a projective space of an arbitrary dimension to the product of projective spaces of lower dimensions induced by linear projections. In particular, we give an algebro-geometric variant of the projective reconstruction theorem by Hartley and Schaffalitzky.

We prove that the space of smooth rational curves of degree $e$ on a general complete intersection of multidegree $(d_1, \ldots , d_m)$ in $\mathbb {P}^n$ is irreducible of the expected dimension if $\sum _{i=1}^m d_i \lt (2n+m+1)/3$ and $n$ is sufficiently large. This generalizes a result of Harris, Roth and Starr [Rational curves on hypersurfaces of low degree, J. Reine Angew. Math. 571 (2004), 73–106], and is achieved by proving that the space of conics passing through any point of a general complete intersection has constant dimension if $\sum _{i=1}^m d_i$ is small compared to $n$.

We show that the Hilbert scheme, that parameterizes all ideals with the same Hilbert function over a Clements–Lindström ring W, is connected. More precisely, we prove that every graded ideal is connected by a sequence of deformations to the lex-plus-powers ideal with the same Hilbert function. This is an analogue of Hartshorne’s theorem that Grothendieck’s Hilbert scheme is connected. We also prove a conjecture by Gasharov, Hibi, and Peeva that the lex ideal attains maximal Betti numbers among all graded ideals in W with a fixed Hilbert function.

Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a coherent rank 2 sheaf on a scheme $Y\,\subset \,{{\mathbb{P}}^{n}}$ of dimension at least two and let $X\,\subset \,Y$ be the zero set of a section $\sigma \,\in \,{{H}^{0}}\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the functor that deforms the pair $\left( \mathcal{F},\,\sigma \right)$ and the two functors that deform $\mathcal{F}$ on $Y$, and $X$ in $Y$, respectively. By imposing some conditions on two forgetful maps between the functors, we prove that the scheme structure of e.g., the moduli scheme ${{\text{M}}_{\text{Y}}}\left( P \right)$ of stable sheaves on a threefold $Y$ at $\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$, and the scheme structure at ($X$) of the Hilbert scheme of curves on $Y$ become closely related. Using this relationship, we get criteria for the dimension and smoothness of ${{\text{M}}_{\text{Y}}}\left( P \right)$ at $\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$, without assuming $\text{Ex}{{\text{t}}^{2}}\left( \mathcal{F},\,\mathcal{F} \right)\,=\,0$. For reflexive sheaves on $Y\,=\,{{\mathbb{P}}^{3}}$ whose deficiency module $M\,=\,H_{*}^{1}\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$ satisfies $_{0}\text{Ex}{{\text{t}}^{2}}\left( M,\,M \right)\,=\,0$ (e.g., of diameter at most 2), we get necessary and sufficient conditions of unobstructedness that coincide in the diameter one case. The conditions are further equivalent to the vanishing of certain graded Betti numbers of the free graded minimal resolution of $H_{*}^{0}\left( \mathcal{F} \right)$. Moreover, we show that every irreducible component of ${{\text{M}}_{\mathbb{P}}}^{3}\left( P \right)$ containing a reflexive sheaf of diameter one is reduced (generically smooth) and we compute its dimension. We also determine a good lower bound for the dimension of any component of ${{\text{M}}_{\mathbb{P}}}^{3}\left( P \right)$ that contains a reflexive stable sheaf with “small” deficiency module $M$.

For most of the finite subgroups of $\text{SL(3,}\,\text{C)}$ we give explicit formulae for the Molien series of the coinvariant algebras, generalizing McKay's formulae $\text{ }\!\![\!\!\text{ McKay99 }\!\!]\!\!\text{ }$ for subgroups of $\text{SU(2)}$. We also study the $G $-orbit Hilbert scheme $\text{Hil}{{\text{b}}^{G}}({{\mathbf{C}}^{3}})$ for any finite subgroup $G $ of $\text{SO(3)}$, which is known to be a minimal (crepant) resolution of the orbit space ${{\mathbf{C}}^{3}}/G$ . In this case the fiber over the origin of the Hilbert-Chow morphism from $\text{Hil}{{\text{b}}^{G}}({{\mathbf{C}}^{3}})$ to ${{\mathbf{C}}^{3}}/G$ consists of finitely many smooth rational curves, whose planar dual graph is identified with a certain subgraph of the representation graph of $G $. This is an $\text{SO(3)}$ version of the McKay correspondence in the $\text{SU(2)}$ case.

We introduce symmetrizing operators of the polynomial ring A[x] in the variable x over a ring A. When A is an algebra over a field k these operators are used to characterize the monic polynomials F(x) of degree n in A[x] such that A[otimes]kk[x](x)/(F(x)) is a free A-module of rank n. We use the characterization to determine the Hilbert scheme parameterizing subschemes of length n of k[x](x).
