Flumioxazin plus metolachlor mixtures preemergence (PRE) were evaluated with or without postemergence (POST) herbicides for weed control and peanut (Arachis hypogaea) response in three North Carolina studies. Metolachlor PRE at 2.24 kg ai/ha controlled goosegrass (Eleusine indica) and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) 93 and 80%, respectively, and control was not improved with flumioxazin or norflurazon. Metolachlor plus flumioxazin PRE at 0.07 or 0.11 kg ai/ha controlled common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album); entireleaf (Ipomoea hederacea var. integriuscula), ivyleaf (I. hederacea), and pitted morningglory (I. lacunosa); and prickly sida (Sida spinosa) better than metolachlor plus norflurazon PRE at 1.34 kg ai/ha. Morningglories (Ipomoea spp.) were controlled 77 and 86% with flumioxazin PRE at 0.07 and 0.11 kg/ha, respectively, and control was increased to nearly 100% with acifluorfen plus 2,4-DB or lactofen plus 2,4-DB POST. Peanut injury by flumioxazin and norflurazon was observed at one location in 1997; however, yields were not reduced. Peanut treated with metolachlor plus flumioxazin PRE at either rate yielded at least 3,750 kg/ha compared to 3,120 kg/ha with metolachlor plus norflurazon PRE or 1,320 kg/ha with metolachlor PRE.

Experiments were conducted to compare control of entireleaf morningglory with POST applications of DPX-PE350 applied with no adjuvant, a nonionic surfactant, or crop oil concentrate in spray volumes of 94, 235, and 375 L ha−1. Control was greater with a nonionic surfactant or crop oil concentrate than with no adjuvant and control with crop oil concentrate exceeded control with the nonionic surfactant. Spray volume had no effect on efficacy. DPX-PE350 was more effective when applied to foliage only or to soil plus foliage than when applied to soil only after emergence of entireleaf morningglory. Control from soil-only applications was lower on a silty clay soil than on a silt loam soil. Except for sicklepod, mixing DPX-PE350 with fluometuron or MSMA had little effect on weed control.

Chlorimuron applied alone and in combination with acifluorfen or thifensulfuron was evaluated for POST control of common lambsquarters, common ragweed, common cocklebur, and a mixture of pitted, ivyleaf, entireleaf, and tall morningglory in soybean. Common cocklebur control was similar with thifensulfuron at 3 and 4 g ae ha−1 and with chlorimuron at 7 and 9 g ae ha−1, Common ragweed and morningglory control was greater with chlorimuron while common lambsquarters control was greater with thifensulfuron. Control of all species was good with combinations of chlorimuron at 7 g ha−1 plus thifensulfuron at 2 g ha−1 or acifluorfen at 140 g ae ha−1 and similar to or greater than the control with chlorimuron at 9 g ha−1. Soybean yields with all POST herbicide treatments were equivalent to that of the weed-free check.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to determine host status of weed species for Rhizoctonia solani AG-1, which causes Rhizoctonia foliar blight of soybean. Weed species were barnyardgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, common cocklebur, entireleaf morningglory, hemp sesbania, itchgrass, johnsongrass, large crabgrass, northern jointvetch, prickly sida, purple nutsedge, redweed, sicklepod, and smooth pigweed. Seedling weeds were inoculated with suspensions containing intraspecific group IA and IB isolates of the fungus. In the first study, sclerotia of IA were recovered from tissue of all weeds except smooth pigweed, and mycelia of IA were recovered from all except smooth pigweed and redweed. In that study, neither microsclerotia nor mycelia of IB were recovered from sicklepod, barnyardgrass, or large crabgrass, and only microsclerotia were recovered from itchgrass and purple nutsedge. In the second study, sclerotia of IA, microsclerotia of IB, and mycelia of each isolate were recovered from all weed species. In other studies, R. solani spread from at least six of seven weed species to a noninfected soybean plant growing in close proximity. These studies emphasize the importance of weed control, not only for reducing plant competition and increasing yield, but also for the potential impact on development of RFB.

The influence of temperature and relative humidity on the activity of acifluorfen, fomesafen, lactofen, and acifluorfen plus bentazon on prickly sida, pitted and entireleaf morningglory, and common cocklebur was evaluated in a growth chamber. Reduced control of all species was observed at 50% relative humidity as compared to 85% relative humidity when temperatures were higher (32/55 C day/night). Similar response to relative humidity was observed at the lower temperature (25/15 C) when treatments were applied 14 days after emergence (DAE). Changes in temperature at the same relative humidity did not alter herbicidal activity. Delaying application timing from 7 to 14 DAE decreased control by all herbicides except lactofen applied at high relative humidity, which controlled prickly sida at both 7 and 14 DAE.

Experiments were conducted in 1991 and 1992 to evaluate annual grass and broadleaf weed control with bromoxynil applied alone and with graminicides. Bromoxynil controlled velvetleaf better than entireleaf morningglory and controlled both species better than sicklepod. Mixing bromoxynil with fluazifop-P, quizalofop-P, and sethoxydim reduced control of barnyardgrass, green foxtail, large crabgrass, and shattercane. Control of broadleaf signalgrass with quizalofop-P was reduced by bromoxynil. Annual grass control with clethodim was not affected by bromoxynil.

Herbicide systems consisting of PRE, early POST, and late POST options arranged factorially were compared for control of sicklepod in narrow-row soybean with modified acetolactate synthase (ALS) (E.C.4.1.3.18). Other weeds present included common cocklebur and mixed infestations of entireleaf, ivyleaf, pitted, and tall morningglories. PRE options were alachlor or alachlor plus metribuzin plus chlorimuron. Early POST options included chlorimuron, chlorimuron plus thifensulfuron, and no herbicide applied 3 wk after planting. Late POST options were chlorimuron and no herbicide applied 5 wk after planting. POST herbicides were more effective than PRE herbicides on all weeds. Chlorimuron and chlorimuron plus thifensulfuron applied early POST were equally effective on these weeds and usually more effective than chlorimuron applied late POST. There was no advantage of two POST applications compared with a single early POST application. Greatest net returns were obtained in systems using only early POST herbicides. There was no economic advantage from using metribuzin plus chlorimuron PRE in systems that included an early POST herbicide.

The weed control spectrum of clomazone, the influence of clomazone on the performance of other herbicides, and the performance of tank mixtures containing clomazone were evaluated from 1985 through 1987. Clomazone applied preemergence at 280 g ai/ha controlled 90 to 100% of barnyardgrass, giant foxtail, goosegrass, large crabgrass, seedling johnsongrass, prickly sida, and velvetleaf. Clomazone at reduced rates was more effective applied preemergence than preplant-incorporated for 10 of 23 weed species. Clomazone enhanced imazaquin activity on entireleaf morningglory and sicklepod in 1986. A tank mixture of clomazone, imazaquin, and metribuzin at half the labeled rates reduced soybean injury, increased soybean yield, and controlled weeds as well as the mixture at labeled rates.

Field studies were conducted in 1992 and 1993 to evaluate AC 263,222 applied postemergence (POST) alone and as a mixture with atrazine or bentazon for weed control in imidazolinone-resistant corn. Nicosulfuron alone and nicosulfuron plus atrazine were also evaluated. Herbicide treatments were applied following surface-banded applications of two insecticides, carbofuran or terbufos at planting. Crop sensitivity to POST herbicides, corn yield, and weed control was not affected by insecticide treatments. AC 263,222 at 36 and 72 g ai/ha controlled rhizomatous johnsongrass 88 and 99%, respectively, which was equivalent to nicosulfuron applied alone or with atrazine. AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha controlled large crabgrass 99% and redroot pigweed 100%, and this level of control exceeded that obtained with nicosulfuron alone. AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha controlled sicklepod and morningglory species 99 and 98%, respectively. Nicosulfuron alone or with atrazine controlled these two species less than AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha. Addition of bentazon or atrazine to AC 263,222 did not improve control of any species compared with the higher rate of AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha applied alone. Corn yield increased over the untreated control when POST herbicide(s) were applied, but there were no differences in yield among herbicide treatments.

Greenhouse experiments were established to investigate the effects of tank-mixing glyphosate, paraquat, or glufosinate with metribuzin plus chlorimuron, imazaquin, or metribuzin on entireleaf morningglory, sicklepod, and johnsongrass control. Antagonism was the most frequent interaction, and usually occurred when the lower rates of non-selective foliar-active herbicides were used in tank mixtures with selective soil-active herbicides. Antagonism occurred on all species when 180 g ai/ha paraquat was tank-mixed with 90 g ai/ha metribuzin plus 15 g ai/ha chlorimuron. When the rates of non-selective herbicide were increased, antagonism was usually overcome. Antagonism also occurred on entireleaf morningglory control when 210 g ai/ha glyphosate was tank-mixed with 90 g/ha metribuzin plus 15 g/ha chlorimuron or 36 g ai/ha imazaquin. When lower rates of paraquat or glufosinate were tank-mixed with 210 g/ha metribuzin, antagonism also occurred. Less antagonism was noted with glufosinate.

Field experiments were established to evaluate weed control with AC 263,222 alone and in combination with imazaquin or imazethapyr. Addition of AC 263,222 to either imazaquin or imazethapyr resulted in additive or synergistic increases in control of johnsongrass, pitted morningglory, and entireleaf morningglory. Reducing the rate of imazaquin from 140 to 18 g ai ha−1 did not reduce control of johnsongrass or pitted morningglory when AC 263,222 was added at 18 g ai ha−1 and above, compared to 140 g ha−1 imazaquin alone, through 8 weeks after treatment (WAT). When 9 g ha−1 or more AC 263,222 was added to imazethapyr, reducing imazethapyr rate from 70 to 9 g ai ha−1 did not reduce control of johnsongrass or pitted morningglory through 8 WAT. Adding 9 g ha−1 or more AC 263,222 to various rates of imazaquin or imazethapyr 2 and 8 WAT additively or synergistically increased control of johnsongrass, pitted morningglory, entireleaf morningglory, and tall waterhemp compared to those herbicides applied alone. Soybean injury increased 2 WAT when 35 or 70 g ha−1 AC 263,222 was added to most rates of imazaquin or imazethapyr, but was less than 15% in all treatments by 8 WAT. Visual soybean injury did not translate into a yield loss, and an increase in weed control often resulted in increased yield.

Field experiments were conducted in 1994 and 1995 to determine if the sodium salt of pyrithiobac or bromoxynil applied in a low-volume, air-assist spray system controlled entireleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, and smallflower morningglory as well as treatments applied with a conventional hydraulic fan spraying system, and to determine if herbicide rates could be reduced when using the low-volume spraying system. Pyrithiobac at 0.035 and 0.071 kg ai/ha and bromoxynil at 0.56 and 1.12 kg ai/ha were applied alone and in combination with DSMA at 1.7 kg ai/ha or MSMA at 1.7 kg ai/ha. Spraying systems were calibrated to deliver 26 L/ha and 140 L/ha for the low-volume and conventional systems, respectively. No significant differences in control were noted between low-volume and conventional spray systems when herbicides were applied at the suggested use rates of 0.071 and 1.12 kg ai/ha for pyrithiobac and bromoxynil, respectively. Morningglory control was reduced when pyrithiobac and bromoxynil were applied at one-half the suggested use rate regardless of the spraying systems. Bromoxynil alone generally controlled pitted and entireleaf morningglory better than pyrithiobac alone regardless of rate and application method. However, pyrithiobac generally provided better control of smallflower morningglory than bromoxynil. Adding MSMA or DSMA to bromoxynil and pyrithiobac increased control of both weed species.

Experiments were conducted at three locations in Louisiana from 1992 to 1994 to evaluate broadleaf weed control with sulfentrazone. Sulfentrazone at 0.42 kg ai/ha applied PPI or PRE provided at least 93% control of entireleaf morningglory in all years at all locations, which was greater than control with metribuzin PRE. Prickly sida control with sulfentrazone ranged from 83 to 94%, which was equal to or greater than control with metribuzin. Hemp sesbania and sicklepod control with sulfentrazone was unacceptable (≤75%) regardless of application method and generally was lower than control with metribuzin. Greater than 90% control of smellmelon and hophornbeam copperleaf was observed with all treatments. Minor but transient soybean injury was noted at one location in one year. Soybean yields following sulfentrazone PRE at St. Joseph were greater than yields with metribuzin as a result of the general increase in broadleaf weed control.

Systems consisting of flumetsulam, metribuzin plus chlorimuron, or imazaquin applied PPI with trifluralin or PRE with metolachlor were compared with and without chlorimuron POST for control of sicklepod and entireleaf morningglory in narrow-row soybean at four locations. Control of sicklepod and entireleaf morningglory by soil-applied herbicides was generally inadequate. Control of sicklepod by flumetsulam exceeded control by metribuzin plus chlorimuron or imazaquin at one location. Entireleaf morningglory control by flumetsulam was similar to or less than control by metribuzin plus chlorimuron or imazaquin. Chlorimuron POST was a more important component of management systems for these weeds than was flumetsulam, metribuzin plus chlorimuron, or imazaquin PPI or PRE. Pooled over soil-applied herbicides, chlorimuron POST increased late-season control of sicklepod and entireleaf morningglory 25 to 61% and 22 to 54%, respectively; increased soybean yield 20 to 55%; decreased foreign matter contamination 5 to 13%; and increased net returns $34 to $185/ha. When used in conjunction with chlorimuron POST, flumetsulam, metribuzin plus chlorimuron, and imazaquin applied PPI with trifluralin or PRE with metolachlor increased late-season control of sicklepod and entireleaf morningglory only when control by trifluralin or metolachlor followed by chlorimuron POST was less than 66 and 77%, respectively.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the interactions of tank-mix combinations of sethoxydim plus the sodium salt of bentazon, the sodium salt of acifluorfen, fomesafen, imazaquin, or the ethyl ester of chlorimuron. Antagonistic interactions were observed with tank-mixes of sethoxydim plus bentazon, imazaquin, or chlorimuron applied for fall panicum, large crabgrass, and goosegrass control in field experiments. Antagonism was observed in greenhouse experiments with tank-mixes of sethoxydim plus bentazon or imazaquin applied to goosegrass. Bentazon, acifluorfen, and fomesafen reduced 14C-sethoxydim uptake by large crabgrass. However, imazaquin and chlorimuron did not affect 14C-sethoxydim uptake. In field experiments, no interactions occurred with tank-mixes of sethoxydim plus any of the broadleaf weed control herbicides applied to entireleaf or tall morningglory.

Cloransulam-methyl applied postemergence (POST) following various preplant-incorporated (PPI) herbicides was evaluated in four experiments for weed control in North Carolina soybean over a 2-yr period at three locations. Acifluorfen plus bentazon or chlorimuron alone applied POST injured soybean more than cloransulam-methyl when following any soil-applied herbicide. When following trifluralin PPI, cloransulam-methyl controlled common ragweed, entireleaf morningglory, and pitted morningglory comparable to acifluorfen plus bentazon or chlorimuron. Common lambsquarters and prickly sida control was higher when acifluorfen plus bentazon was applied POST following trifluralin PPI compared to trifluralin PPI followed by cloransulam-methyl or chlorimuron. Acifluorfen plus bentazon or chlorimuron POST controlled yellow nutsedge and smooth pigweed more than cloransulam-methyl POST when following trifluralin PPI. When trifluralin was applied PPI in mixtures with chlorimuron plus metribuzin, flumetsulam, or imazaquin, control of most species was similar regardless of POST treatment used. Soybean treated with cloransulam-methyl yielded 250 kg/ha more than treatments with chlorimuron when these herbicides followed trifluralin plus flumetsulam or trifluralin plus imazaquin. Net returns with different herbicide systems followed trends similar to soybean yield.

Weed management systems using a chloroacetamide herbicide applied preplant incorporated (PPI) and at cracking (AC) plus lactofen applied AC and early postemergence (POST) controlled at least 98% of common lambsquarters. Similar systems using a chloroacetamide herbicide applied PPI and early POST plus lactofen applied early POST and postemergence (POST) controlled less than 70% of common lambsquarters. All sequential lactofen systems controlled common ragweed completely and at least 86% of morningglory species. Highest peanut yields and net returns were obtained with weed management systems consisting of sequential applications of lactofen applied AC and early POST, or systems that used acifluorfen plus bentazon POST, or lactofen plus bentazon applied early POST or POST.

Field experiments were conducted from 1993 to 1995 to compare weed control by the isopropylamine salt of glyphosate at 0.21, 0.42, 0.63, and 0.84 kg ae/ha applied at three stages of weed growth. Weed control by glyphosate applied at these rates alone or with ammonium sulfate at 2.8 kg/ha was also evaluated. In other experiments, potential interactions between glyphosate and acifluorfen, chlorimuron, and 2,4-DB were evaluated. Velvetleaf, prickly sida, sicklepod, pitted morningglory, entireleaf morningglory, palmleaf morningglory, and hemp sesbania were controlled more easily when weeds had one to three leaves compared with control when weeds had four or more leaves. Glyphosate controlled redroot pigweed, velvetleaf, prickly sida, sicklepod, and barnyardgrass more effectively than pitted morningglory, entireleaf morningglory, palmleaf morningglory, or hemp sesbania. Increasing the rate of glyphosate increased control, especially when glyphosate was applied to larger weeds. Greater variation in control was noted for pitted morningglory, palmleaf morningglory, prickly sida, and velvetleaf than for redroot pigweed, sicklepod, entireleaf morningglory, or hemp sesbania. Ammonium sulfate increased prickly sida and entireleaf morningglory control but did not influence sicklepod, hemp sesbania, or barnyardgrass control. Acifluorfen applied 3 d before glyphosate or in a mixture with glyphosate reduced barnyardgrass control compared with glyphosate applied alone. Chlorimuron did not reduce efficacy. Mixtures of glyphosate and 2,4-DB controlled sicklepod, entireleaf morningglory, and barnyardgrass similar to glyphosate alone.

Field experiments were conducted in 1986, 1987, and 1988 to evaluate imazethapyr rate and time of application on postemergence control of 24 weed species. Contour graphs were developed that predicted imazethapyr rates required for various levels of weed control based upon weed leaf number at application. Rates below the labeled rate (70 g ha−1) provided 90% or greater control of common cocklebur, smallflower morningglory, and smooth pigweed if applied to 3 true-leaf or smaller weeds and of barnyardgrass, seedling johnsongrass, and Palmer amaranth if applied while weeds were in the cotyledon or 1 true-leaf stage. A rate of 70 g ha−1 provided 90% control of large crabgrass in the 1 true-leaf stage. Entireleaf morningglory, red rice, pitted morningglory, and velvetleaf are not susceptible enough to imazethapyr for 90% or greater control to be obtained with rates lower than 70 g ha−1 at the 1 true-leaf growth stage. These data demonstrate how control data can be used for developing effective reduced-rate herbicide recommendations based on weed leaf number.

In most cases, a herbicide must traverse the cell wall, the plasma membrane, and organellar membranes of a plant cell to reach its site of action where accumulation causes phytotoxicity. The physicochemical characteristics of the herbicide molecule including lipophilicity and acidity, the plant cell membranes, and the electrochemical potential in the plant cell control herbicide absorption and accumulation. Most herbicides move across plant membranes via nonfacilitated diffusion because the membrane's lipid bilayer is permeable to neutral, lipophilic xenobiotics. Passive absorption of lipophilic, ionic herbicides or weak acids can be mediated by an ion-trapping mechanism where the less lipophilic, anionic form accumulates in alkaline compartments of the plant cell. A model that includes the pH and electrical gradients across plant cell membranes better predicts accumulation concentrations in plant cells of weak acid herbicides compared to a model that uses pH only. Herbicides also may accumulate in plant cells by conversion to nonphytotoxic metabolites, binding to cellular constituents, or partitioning into lipids. Evidence exists for herbicide transport across cell membranes via carrier-mediated processes where herbicide accumulation is energy dependent; absorption is saturable and slowed by metabolic inhibitors and compounds of similar structure.
