We consider a two-step Sal’nikov reaction scheme occurring within a compressible viscous gas. The first step of the reaction may be either endothermic or exothermic, while the second step is strictly exothermic. Energy may also be lost from the system due to Newtonian cooling. An asymptotic solution for temperature perturbations of small amplitude is presented using the methods of strained coordinates and multiple scales, and a travelling wave solution with a sech-squared profile is derived. The method of lines is then used to approximate the full system with a set of ordinary differential equations, which are integrated numerically to track accurately the evolution of the reaction front. This numerical method is used to verify the asymptotic solution and investigate behaviours under different conditions. Using this method, temperature waves progressing as pulsatile fronts are detected at appropriate parameter values.

Asymptotic homogenisation via the method of multiple scales is considered for problems in which the microstructure comprises inclusions of one material embedded in a matrix formed from another. In particular, problems are considered in which the interface conditions include a global balance law in the form of an integral constraint; this may be zero net charge on the inclusion, for example. It is shown that for such problems care must be taken in determining the precise location of the interface; a naive approach leads to an incorrect homogenised model. The method is applied to the problems of perfectly dielectric inclusions in an insulator, and acoustic wave propagation through a bubbly fluid in which the gas density is taken to be negligible.

Following the derivation of amplitude equations through a new two-time-scale method [O'Malley, R. E., Jr. & Kirkinis, E (2010) A combined renormalization group-multiple scale method for singularly perturbed problems. Stud. Appl. Math. 124, 383–410], we show that a multi-scale method may often be preferable for solving singularly perturbed problems than the method of matched asymptotic expansions. We illustrate this approach with 10 singularly perturbed ordinary and partial differential equations.
