We put in print a classical result that states that for most purposes, there is no harm in assuming the existence of saturated models in model theory. The presentation is aimed for model theorists with only basic knowledge of axiomatic set theory.

We present a framework for tame geometry on Henselian valued fields, which we call Hensel minimality. In the spirit of o-minimality, which is key to real geometry and several diophantine applications, we develop geometric results and applications for Hensel minimal structures that were previously known only under stronger, less axiomatic assumptions. We show the existence of t-stratifications in Hensel minimal structures and Taylor approximation results that are key to non-Archimedean versions of Pila–Wilkie point counting, Yomdin’s parameterization results and motivic integration. In this first paper, we work in equi-characteristic zero; in the sequel paper, we develop the mixed characteristic case and a diophantine application.

We prove some results about the model theory of fields with a derivation of the Frobenius map, especially that the model companion of this theory is axiomatizable by axioms used by Wood in the case of the theory $\operatorname {DCF}_p$ and that it eliminates quantifiers after adding the inverse of the Frobenius map to the language. This strengthens the results from [4]. As a by-product, we get a new geometric axiomatization of this model companion. Along the way we also prove a quantifier elimination result, which holds in a much more general context and we suggest a way of giving “one-dimensional” axiomatizations for model companions of some theories of fields with operators.

We say a structure ${\cal M}$ in a first-order language ${\cal L}$ is indivisible if for every coloring of its universe in two colors, there is a monochromatic substructure ${\cal M}\prime \subseteq {\cal M}$ such that ${\cal M}\prime \cong {\cal M}$. Additionally, we say that ${\cal M}$ is symmetrically indivisible if ${\cal M}\prime$ can be chosen to be symmetrically embedded in ${\cal M}$ (that is, every automorphism of ${\cal M}\prime$ can be extended to an automorphism of ${\cal M}$). Similarly, we say that ${\cal M}$ is elementarily indivisible if ${\cal M}\prime$ can be chosen to be an elementary substructure. We define new products of structures in a relational language. We use these products to give recipes for construction of elementarily indivisible structures which are not transitive and elementarily indivisible structures which are not symmetrically indivisible, answering two questions presented by A. Hasson, M. Kojman, and A. Onshuus.

It is proved in this article that the theory of separably closed nontrivially valued fields of characteristic p > 0 and imperfection degree e > 0 (e ≤ ∞) has quantifier elimination in the language ${{\cal L}_{p,{\rm{div}}}} = \{ + , - , \times ,0,1\} \cup {\{ {\lambda _{n,j}}(x;{y_1}, \ldots ,{y_n})\} _{0 \le n < \omega ,0 \le j < {p^n}}} \cup \{ |\}$; in particular, when e is finite, the corresponding theory has quantifier elimination in the language ${\cal L} = \{ + , - , \times ,0,1\} \cup \{ {b_1}, \ldots ,{b_e}\} \cup {\{ {\lambda _{e,j}}(x;{b_1}, \ldots ,{b_e})\} _{0 \le j < {p^e}}} \cup \{ |\}$.

We consider valued fields with a distinguished contractive map as valued modules over the Ore ring of difference operators. We prove quantifier elimination for separably closed valued fields with the Frobenius map, in the pure module language augmented with functions yielding components for a p-basis and a chain of subgroups indexed by the valuation group.

We introduce a very weak language on p-adic fields K, which is just rich enough to have exactly the same definable subsets of the line K that one has using the ring language. (In our context, definable always means definable with parameters.) We prove that the only definable functions in the language are trivial functions. We also give a definitional expansion of in which K has quantifier elimination, and we obtain a cell decomposition result for -definable sets.

Our language can serve as a p-adic analogue of the very weak language (<) on the real numbers, to define a notion of minimality on the field of p-adic numbers and on related valued fields. These fields are not necessarily Henselian and may have positive characteristic.

We study translations of dyadic first-order sentences into equalities between relationalexpressions. The proposed translation techniques (which work also in the conversedirection) exploit a graphical representation of formulae in a hybrid of the twoformalisms. A major enhancement relative to previous work is that we can cope with therelational complement construct and with the negation connective. Complementation ishandled by adopting a Smullyan-like uniform notation to classify and decompose relationalexpressions; negation is treated by means of a generalized graph-representation offormulae in ℒ+, and through a series of graph-transformation rules whichreflect the meaning of connectives and quantifiers.

Let (K, v) be a henselian valued field of characteristic 0. Then K admits a definable partition on each piece of which the leading term of a polynomial in one variable can be computed as a definable function of the leading term of a linear map. The main step in obtaining this partition is an answer to the question, given a polynomial f(x) ∈ K[x], what is v(f(x))?

Two applications are given: first, a constructive quantifier elimination relative to the leading terms, suggesting a relative decision procedure; second, a presentation of every definable subset of K as the pullback of a definable set in the leading terms subjected to a linear translation.

We find the model completion of the theory modules over , where is a finitely generated commutative algebra over a field K. This is done in a context where the field K and the module are represented by sorts in the theory, so that constructible sets associated with a module can be interpreted in this language. The language is expanded by additional sorts for the Grassmanians of all powers of Kn, which are necessary to achieve quantifier elimination.

The result turns out to be that the model completion is the theory of a certain class of “big” injective modules. In particular, it is shown that the class of injective modules is itself elementary. We also obtain an explicit description of the types in this theory.

In [12]. T. Scanlon proved a quantifier elimination result for valued D-fields in a three-sorted language by using angular component functions. Here we prove an analogous theorem in a different language which was introduced by F. Delon in her thesis. This language allows us to lift the quantifier elimination result to a one-sorted language by a process described in the Appendix. As a byproduct, we state and prove a “positivstellensatz” theorem for the differential analogue of the theory of real-series closed fields in the valued D-field setting.

Let K be an algebraically closed field endowed with a complete non-archimedean norm with valuation ring R. Let $f\colon Y \to X$ be a map of K-affinoid varieties. In this paper we study the analytic structure of the image $f(Y) \subset X$; such an image is a typical example of a subanalytic set. We show that the subanalytic sets are precisely the $\mathbf D$-semianalytic sets, where $\mathbf D$ is the truncated division function first introduced by Denef and van den Dries. This result is most conveniently stated as a Quantifier Elimination result for the valuation ring R in an analytic expansion of the language of valued rings. To prove this we establish a Flattening Theorem for affinoid varieties in the style of Hironaka, which allows a reduction to the study of subanalytic sets arising from flat maps, that is, we show that a map of affinoid varieties can be rendered flat by using only finitely many local blowing ups. The case of a flat map is then dealt with by a small extension of a result of Raynaud and Gruson showing that the image of a flat map of affinoid varieties is open in the Grothendieck topology. Using Embedded Resolution of Singularities, we derive in the zero characteristic case, a Uniformization Theorem for subanalytic sets: a subanalytic set can be rendered semianalytic using only finitely many local blowing ups with smooth centres. Let T be a complete o-minimal extension of the theory of real closed fields. We characterize the convex hulls of elementary substructures of models of T and show that the residue field of such a convex hull has a natural expansion to a model of T. We give a quantifier elimination relative to T for the theory of pairs (ℛ, V) where ℛ ⊨ T and V ≠ ℛ is the convex hull of an elementary substructure of ℛ. We deduce that the theory of such pairs is complete and weakly o-minimal. We also give a quantifier elimination relative to T for the theory of pairs with ℛ a model of T and a proper elementary substructure that is Dedekind complete in ℛ. We deduce that the theory of such “tame” pairs is complete.
