A rich zoo of peculiar objects forms when Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars, undergo interactions in a binary system. For example, Barium (Ba) stars are main-sequence and red-giant stars that accreted mass from the outflows of a former AGB companion, which is now a dim white dwarf (WD). Their orbital properties can help us constrain AGB binary interaction mechanisms and their chemical abundances are a tracer of the nucleosynthesis processes that took place inside the former AGB star. The observational constraints concerning the orbital and stellar properties of Ba stars have increased in the past years, but important uncertainties remained concerning their WD companions. In this contribution, we used HD 76225 to demonstrate that by combining radial-velocity data with Hipparcos and Gaia astrometry, one can accurately constrain the orbital inclinations of these systems and obtain the absolute masses of these WDs, getting direct information about their AGB progenitors via initial-final mass relationships.

So far detached compact binaries containing neutron stars have been observed either at intermediate stages of the evolution by radio telescopes or at merger by ground-based gravitational wave detectors. Sensitive to gravitational waves from binaries millions to thousands years prior to the merger, the future Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be crucial for bridging the gap between the currently accessible regimes. Depending on the binary type, LISA could potentially discover from a few to several hundreds in the entirely new regime throughout the Milky Way. Here we provide a concise summary of the current expectation for the detection of Galactic binaries containing neutron stars with LISA, focusing on double neutron stars and neutron star - white dwarf binaries. We outline a few examples of science investigations that LISA data will enable for these binaries.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission will observe from space gravitational waves emitted by neutron stars and white dwarfs within galactic binaries. These compact stars can have intense magnetic fields. Therefore, the impact of the magnetic fields on the orbital and the spins evolution of binary systems can potentially be detected by LISA through the GW’s strain. Within the magnetic dipole-dipole approximation, we found that magnetism generates a secular drift of the mean longitude which, in turn, shifts all the frequencies contained in the GW signal. For a quasi-circular orbit, the signal is mainly monochromatic and the magnetic shift is proportional to the product of the magnetic moments and is inversely proportional to the 7/2 power of the semi-major axis. Hence, for a highly magnetic binary system in compact orbit, a non-negligible amount of the frequency measured by LISA might have a magnetic origin.

The substantial number of binary central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) now known ($\sim 50$) has revealed a strong connection between binarity and some morphological features including jets and low-ionisation structures. However, some morphological features and asymmetries might be too complex or subtle to ascribe to binary interactions alone. In these cases, a tertiary component, that is, a triple nucleus, could be the missing ingredient required to produce these features. The only proven triple, NGC 246, is alone insufficient to investigate the shaping role of triple nuclei, but one straightforward way to identify more triples is to search for binaries in nuclei with known visual companions. Here we demonstrate this approach with the SALT HRS (High Resolution Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope) discovery of a 4.81-d orbital period in the CSPN of Sp 3 which has a visual companion 0.31 arcsec away. The spectroscopic distance of the visual companion is in agreement with distance estimates to the nebula, the Gaia DR2 parallax of the central star, and the gravity distance of the central star. This supports a physical association between the visual companion and the inner 4.81 d binary, making the nucleus of Sp 3 a likely triple. We determine $T_\mathrm{eff}=68^{+12}_{-6}\ \text{kK},\ \log g=4.6\pm0.2\ \text{cm s}^{-2}$, and $v_\mathrm{rot}=80\pm20\ \text{km s}^{-1}$ for the primary from non-local thermodynamic equilibrium model atmosphere analysis. The peculiar nebula presents an apparent bipolar morphology, jets, and an unexpected ‘extreme’ oxygen abundance discrepancy factor (adf) of $24.6^{+4.1}_{-3.4}$. The adf is inconsistent with the purported trend for longer orbital period post-common-envelope (CE) PNe to exhibit normal adfs, further highlighting the dominant influence of selection effects in post-CE PNe. Lastly, the Type I nebular abundances of Sp 3, whose origin is often attributed to more massive progenitors, are incongruous with the likely Galactic Thick Disk membership of Sp 3, possibly suggesting that rotation and binarity may play an important role in influencing the AGB nucleosynthesis of PNe.

The programme of this IAU Symposium, number 357, consisted of sessions organized around a number of key themes, as detailed in the preceding text. Each session included one or two invited keynote talks plus a number of contributed papers. Time was set aside for extensive discussion following the sessions associated with each of them. These were moderated by members of the Science Organising Committee, posing a number of questions to the audience to stimulate the discussion. The nature of such discussions makes them hard to record in detail, but a number of key points have been extracted and incorporated into this short concluding paper.

Giammichele et al. (2018) proposed a full determination, largely independent of evolution calculations, of the chemical composition and stratification inside the hot pulsating DB white dwarf KIC 08626021. However, Timmes et al. (2018) pointed out that neglecting the effects of neutrino cooling, such as in the static models used in Giammichele et al. study, could impact significantly the derived seismic solution and compromise conclusions drawn upon it. Here we present a reanalysis of KIC 08626021, using improved static models which now incorporate more realistic luminosity profiles that reflect the still significant energy losses induced by neutrino emission mechanisms in hot DB white dwarfs. We show that this effect has only a limited impact on the derived seismic model properties and, more importantly, that all the conclusions brought by Giammichele et al. (2018) remain entirely valid.

Ultra-massive (⩾M⊙) oxygen/neon (ONe) core white dwarfs (WDs) are the result of the evolution of isolated progenitor stars with masses above 6−M⊙. It is expected that hydrogen-rich (DA) ultra-massive WDs harbor crystallized cores at the typical temperatures of the ZZ Ceti instability strip. These stars offer a unique opportunity to study the processes of crystallization and to infer their core chemical composition. We present a study of the evolution and asteroseismology of ultra-massive DA WDs. We found that all pulsating WDs known to date with M⩾1.1M⊙ should have more than 80% of their mass crystallized, if a ONe-core is assumed. Finally, we present a complete asteroseismological analysis to the well known ZZ Ceti BPM 37093 and a preliminary analysis to GD 518 and SDSS J0840+5222.

Planetary materials orbiting white dwarf stars reveal the ultimate fate of the planets of the Solar System and all known transiting exoplanets. Observed metal pollution and infrared excesses from debris disks support that planetary systems or their remnants are common around white dwarf stars; however, these planets are difficult to detect since a very high orbital inclination angle is required for a small white dwarf to be transited, and these transits have very short (minute) durations. The low odds of catching individual transits could be overcome by a sufficiently wide and fast photometric survey. I demonstrate that, by obtaining over 100 million images of white dwarf stars with 30-second exposures in its first three years, the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) is likely to record the first exoplanetary transits of white dwarfs, as well as new systems of transiting, disintegrating planetesimals. In these proceedings, I describe my project strategy to discover these systems using the ZTF data.

The white dwarfs in close, interacting binaries provide a natural laboratory for exploring the effects of heating and angular momentum from the accreting material arriving on the surface from the companion. This study is even more fruitful when it involves a pulsating white dwarf, which allows an exploration of the effects of the accretion on the interior as well as in the atmosphere. The last decade has seen the accomplishment of UV (HST) and optical (ground) studies of several accreting white dwarfs that have undergone a dwarf nova outburst that heated the white dwarf and subsequently returned to its quiescent temperature. The most recent study involves V386 Ser, which underwent its first known outburst in January 2019, after 19 years at quiescence. V386 Ser is unique in that its quiescent pulsation shows a triplet, with spacing indicating a rotation period of 4.8 days, extremely slow for accreting white dwarfs. This paper presents the result of HST ultraviolet spectra obtained 7 months after its outburst that shows the first clear confirmation of shorter period modes being driven following the heating from a dwarf nova outburst.

The vast majority of stars that populate the Universe will end their evolution as white-dwarf stars. Applications of white dwarfs include cosmochronology, evolution of planetary systems, and also as laboratories to study non-standard physics and crystallization. In addition to the knowledge of their surface properties from spectroscopy combined with model atmospheres, the global pulsations that they exhibit during several phases of their evolution allow spying on the deep interior of these stars. Indeed, by means of asteroseismology, an approach based on the comparison between the observed pulsation periods of variable white dwarfs and the periods predicted by representative theoretical models, we can infer details of the internal chemical stratification, the total mass, and even the stellar rotation profile and strength of magnetic fields. In this article, we review the current state of the area, emphasizing the latest findings provided by space-mission data.

As they evolve, white dwarfs undergo major changes in their atmospheric composition, a phenomenon known as spectral evolution. In particular, most hot He-rich (DO) stars transform into H-rich (DA) stars as they cool off, most likely as a result of the float-up of residual H. We investigate this DO-to-DA transition by taking advantage of the extensive spectroscopic dataset provided by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using our new state-of-the-art non-LTE model atmospheres, we perform a spectroscopic analysis of 1882 hot (Teff >30,000 K) white dwarfs identified in the SDSS. We find that at least 15% of all white dwarfs are born with a He-dominated atmosphere. Among these, ∼2/3 turn into H-rich stars before they reach Teff ∼40,000 K, while the remaining ∼1/3 maintain their He-rich surface throughout their entire evolution. We speculate on the origin of these two groups of objects.

Evolution of post-AGB stars is extremely fast. They cross the HR diagram vertically on a timescale of hundreds to some ten thousands of years to reach maximum temperature in their lifetime. This is reflected in an increasing excitation of planetary nebulae on a timescale of years and decades. Since evolutionary timescale of post-AGB stars is very sensitive to their mass, observed changes can be used to determine model dependent central star masses. If an additional parameter is determined (e.g. luminosity or dynamic age), the observed evolution of planetary nebulae can be utilized for observational verification of theoretical models.

In the helium-rich intershell region of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, slow neutron-capture nucleosynthesis produces heavy elements beyond iron. If the stars experience a final-flash of the He-burning shell, a pulse-driven convection zone establishes, the stars become hydrogen-deficient and exhibit former intershell material at their surfaces. In their subsequent evolution towards the white-dwarf cooling sequence, but still at constant luminosity, a strong stellar wind prevents diffusion to wipe out the information about AGB yields. We present and interpret the analysis results of hydrogen-rich and -deficient post-AGB stars, discuss difficulties in their analysis and review the implications on the understanding of post-AGB evolution.

The Gaia satellite recently released parallax measurements for nearly 400,000 white dwarf stars, allowing for precise measurements of their physical parameters. By combining these parallaxes with Pan-STARRS and CFIS-u photometry, we measured the effective temperatures and surface gravities for all white dwarfs within 100 pc and identified a sample of ZZ Ceti white dwarf candidates within the instability strip. We report the results of a photometric follow-up, currently under way, aimed at identifying new ZZ Ceti stars among this sample using the PESTO camera attached to the 1.6-m telescope at the Mont Mégantic Observatory. Our goal is to verify that ZZ Ceti stars occupy a region in the logg-Teff plane where no nonvariable stars are found, supporting the idea that ZZ Ceti pulsators represent a phase through which all hydrogen-line (DA) white dwarfs must evolve.

The shape of the luminosity function of white dwarfs (WDLF) is sensitive to the characteristic cooling time and, therefore, it can be used to test the existence of additional sources or sinks of energy such as those predicted by alternative physical theories. However, because of the degeneracy between the physical properties of white dwarfs and the properties of the Galaxy, the star formation history (SFH) and the IMF, it is almost always possible to explain any anomaly as an artifact introduced by the star formation rate. To circumvent this problem there are at least two possibilities, the analysis of the WDLF in populations with different stories, like disc and halo, and the search of effects not correlated with the SFH. These procedures are illustrated with the case of axions.
