To evaluate the importance of oxides to the surface chemistry of acid mineral soils, clay fractions were separated from a surface and subsurface horizon of an Inceptisol representative of many of the acid soils of the Southern Tier of New York state. Portions of the clays were treated to remove selectively noncrystalline and microcrystalline Fe and A1 oxides (acid ammonium oxalate extraction), total free iron oxides (dithionite reduction in buffered citrate solution), and organic matter (hypochlorite oxidation). Charge and ion-adsorption characteristics of the treated and untreated clays were investigated by means of Ca2+- and Cl−-exchange capacities, potentiometric titrations, and electrophoretic mobility (zeta potential) measurements of the CaCl2-treated clays.

Based upon surface area and anion- and cation-exchange measurements, the Fe and A1 oxides or oxideorganic matter complexes were found to contribute a large part of the surface area and pH-dependent charge of these clays. Oxide removal increased the cation-exchange capacity (CEC) and virtually eliminated the anion-exchange capacity (AEC) at pH 3 and 5.5 while shifting the positive zeta potential (ZPC) of the B-horizon clay toward negative values. Organic matter oxidation increased the AEC at pH 3 and the CEC at pH 5.5 and markedly shifted the ZPCs of both A- and B-horizon clays toward more positive values, probably by the removal of adsorbed organics from oxide surfaces. Estimates of the ZPCs of the clays varied among the three methods used, Ca2+- and Cl−-exchange capacities giving the lowest, and electrophoresis giving the highest values.

The Bingham yield stress for suspensions of illite-iron oxide complexes is examined as a function of pH and iron oxide content. Addition of iron oxides to illite increased the yield stress over a pH range of 3 to 10. With increasing pH the yield stress decreased for the complexes with iron oxides of 2 and 5% while the complexes with iron oxides of 7, 10, and 20% exhibited the maximum yield stresses at pH values from 6 to 8. The iron oxides which are not associated with the illite enhanced the yield stress more than the iron oxides precipitated on the illite surfaces. The yield stress for the complexes was correlated with their zeta potential, and the higher yield stress is considered due to smaller interparticle repulsion.

Fine kaolinite suspensions were mixed with unaged or aged FeCl3 in this experiment. The interaction between clay particles and Fe3+ hydrolysis products was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The proportion of Fe adsorbed was measured and the electrical charge on the clay particles was determined by electrophoresis. The effect of this interaction on flocculation of clay suspensions was investigated in a series of sedimentation tests. The Fe3+ ions acted as counterions when their concentration was low and when unaged FeCl3 solution was used. Otherwise, their hydrolysis complexes acted as a bonding agent between kaolinite particles. The dispersion-flocculation behavior of kaolinite suspensions was found to be in agreement with the theory of Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey and Overbeek (DLVO), as the sedimentation behavior could be predicted from the data of zeta potentials (ζ).

The dispersive behavior dynamics of clay determine soil characteristics such as permeability and aggregate stability, and, consequently, crop productivity. Soil dispersion is heavily influenced by the ionicity of clay–cation bonds and has been shown to be related to the net negative charge and pH of the system. Little work has been done, however, which considers these factors together, especially for K and Mg clays. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of changing pH on the dispersive behavior of Mg and K homoionic clays, in comparison to Ca and Na clays under equivalent pH conditions. The clay fractions used here were extracted from three soils and have distinctly different mineralogies. These clays were treated to become homoionic with regard to Na, K, Ca, and Mg. Excess salts were removed by dialysis and pH was adjusted to 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 for all clays, except Mg (pH range 3–7). Clay dispersion-flocculation dynamics were investigated, and the net negative charge, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and turbidity were measured. Mg has a similar but less flocculative effect than Ca, while K has a similar but less dispersive effect than Na, under similar pH conditions. The dispersive behavior of Na, K, Mg, and Ca homoionic clays was correlated well with the ionicity of clay–cation bonds at equivalent pH, with the degree of clay dispersion being explained by the pH, EC, ionicity, ζ-potential, and mean particle size of the clay–cation system. A predictive model for dispersion was developed with its applicability and limitations discussed.

Recently, significant advances have been made in the theory and application of acoustic and electroacoustic spectroscopies for measuring the particle-size distribution (PSD) and zeta potential (ζ potential) of colloidal suspensions, respectively. These techniques extend or replace other techniques, such as light-scattering methods, particularly in concentrated suspensions. In this review, we summarize acoustic and electroacoustic theory and published results on clay mineral suspensions, detail theoretical constraints, and indicate potential applications for the study of environmentally significant clay mineral suspensions. Using commercially available instrumentation and suspension concentrations up to 45 vol.%, acoustic spectroscopy can characterize particle sizes from 10 nm to 10 µm, or greater. Electroacoustic spectroscopy can determine the ζ potential of a suspension with a precision and accuracy in the mV range. Despite the clear potential for their use in environmental settings, to date, acoustic methods have been used mainly on clay mineral colloids with industrial application, typically combined with similar measurements such as isoelectric point (IEP) determined from shear yield stress or ζ potential from electrophoretic mobility measurements. Potential applications in environmentally relevant suspension concentrations are significant, as PSD and ζ potential are important factors influencing the transport of mineral colloids and associated contaminants through porous media. Applications include determining the effects of suspension concentration, surfactants, electrolyte strength, pH and solution composition on soil clay properties and colloidal interactions, and determining changes in PSD, aggregation and ζ potential due to adsorption or variations in the clay mineralogy.

Swell-shrink clays are widely distributed in the Guangxi province of southern China in the form of expansive soils and lateritic clays. They have high particle dispersion, poor permeability, and significant swell-shrink properties. In recent decades, a series of problems closely related to the physical-mechanical properties of the swell-shrink clays have been encountered in various engineering projects. Mineral composition is a critical factor affecting the physical-mechanical properties of these clays. However, determining accurately their mineral compositions is difficult because the analytical methods available are expensive, time consuming, and have a high possibility of errors. Therefore, identifying a method suitable for quantitatively analyzing the mineral composition of the swell-shrink clays is necessary. In the current study several swell-shrink clays, including two expansive soils and four lateritic clays, from the Guangxi region were investigated. Qualitative analytical methods such as differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted to identify the mineral composition of the soils. The results indicated that the expansive soils were composed mainly of quartz (Qz), montmorillonite (Mnt), illite (Ilt), and kaolinite (Kln). The Baise specimen also contained a certain amount of calcite (Cal), while the lateritic clays primarily contained Kln and goethite (Gth) as well as lesser amounts of Qz and gibbsite (Gbs). On the basis of the aforementioned results, rough quantitative analyses of the mineral compositions were conducted using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and the Bogue method. The results indicated that the lateritic clay samples from Wuming, Guilin, and Liuzhou contained 70–80% Kln, while the Laibin lateritic clay was 50% Kln. The lateritic clays contained ~10% Gth. The expansive soils were 30–40%, 25–30%, and 10–15% of Ilt, Qz, and Mnt, respectively. Finally, the relationships between the mineral compositions, zeta potentials, and free swelling ratios are discussed briefly. This investigation indicated that the zeta potential was mainly related to the type and content of clay minerals in the soil when neutral water was used as the free solution (pH = 7). The correlation between the swelling index and the zeta potential of the expansive soils was greater than that of the lateritic clays, which indicated that the swelling properties of expansive soils were more affected by the clay mineral composition than those of the lateritic clays. The results provide a systematic method for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the mineral composition of swell-shrink clays and primary data for studying how mineral composition affects the physical properties of swell-shrink clays in the study area.

Kaolinite is a common gangue mineral in iron ore and sodium silicate has been used widely as a dispersant of silicate gangue minerals including kaolinite in various iron-ore flotation methods over a wide range of pH. Its actual dispersive effect on kaolinite under iron-ore flotation conditions has received very limited attention, however. The presence of hydrolyzable metal cations in process water further complicates sodium silicate—kaolinite interactions. In the present study, the dispersive effect of sodium silicate on kaolinite particles in distilled water as well as in CaCl2 and MgCl2 solutions was investigated systematically through electrophoretic mobility and colloid-stability studies. The studies were based on controlled pH, which eliminated the dispersive effect of sodium silicate induced by increasingpulp pH, in order to simulate the conditions of iron-ore processing. With pH controlled at constant levels, sodium silicate dispersed kaolinite only when positively charged sites were present on kaolinite surfaces and the zeta potential of kaolinite was more negative than ~−30 mV. Over the pH range from 5 to 10.5, a significant dispersive effect of sodium silicate was only observed at pH 7. In process water, when Ca and Mgwere present, the strong coagulation of kaolinite particles caused by the hydrolyzable metal cations could not be dispersed effectively with sodium silicate.

Acoustic and electroacoustic measurements of particle-size distribution (PSD) and zeta potential (ζ potential), respectively, were used to obtain in situ measures of the effects of suspension concentration and pH on interactions between mixed-charge clays and clay minerals from a highly weathered sediment. Measurements were obtained in concentrated suspensions as a function of weight fraction and as a function of pH during titrations. Standard dispersion and centrifugation methods were used to obtain a comparative measure of PSD. Thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction patterns were used to obtain semi-quantitative and descriptive analyses, respectively, of the sediment, which is composed of Fe oxide minerals, kaolinite, gibbsite, quartz, crandallite, chlorite and traces of other clay minerals. Acoustic measurements showed that the PSD of the clay fraction varied with suspension concentration, and electroacoustic measurements showed the ‘bulk’ ζ potential increased in absolute value as the suspension concentration decreased. Titration results were also sensitive to suspension concentration. Acoustic measurements indicated that the suspensions became unstable at ∼pH 7.5–8.0, as the attenuation spectra changed character near this pH and the calculated PSD shifted to a larger particle size. This pH value is near the points of zero charge of goethite and gibbsite, as verified by titrations on mineral standards. The results confirm the central role oxide minerals play in regulating clay mineral interactions in highly weathered sediments, and indicate that the average ζ potential of a suspension may be a poor indicator of controls on suspension stability.

Purification of raw bentonites and organo-bentonite preparations is sometimes required for industrial use. Zeta (electrokinetic) potential (ζ), contact angle (wettability/hydrophobicity), and surface free energy (SFE) are important surface characteristics and vary significantly according to the applied surfactant concentration when preparing organo-bentonite. Changes in these characteristics determine the stability, behavior, and efficiency of organo-bentonites in various applications such as adsorption, composite materials, and drug-delivery systems. Knowing how much surfactant should be used to prepare organo-bentonite is, therefore, critical. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect of concentration of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) adsorbed in organo-bentonite (prepared from two local and commercial raw bentonites with potential for use in adsorbent and composite materials) on the ζ potential, contact angle, and SFE profiles. The raw bentonites were purified using sedimentation and centrifugation techniques prior to preparation of the organo-bentonite. The purification results were evaluated in light of X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation exchange capacity (CEC), free swelling volume (FSV), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and particle-size analysis data. Most of the gangue minerals (feldspar, calcite, clinoptilolite, opal, quartz, and mica) having particle size >5 μm were removed from the raw bentonites by using a one-stage sedimentation or a Falcon gravity separator (FGS). Higher yields (68.8% and 81.3% for two bentonites) were obtained with the FGS compared to sedimentation while purification levels were almost the same. ζ changed greatly from –35 mV (and –40 mV) toward 38 mV (and 40 mV) with increasing CTAB concentrations. Similar profiles were also obtained for wettability; maximum contact angles for organo-bentonites were measured as ~72–73o, while they were 12.65 and 14.1o for two purified and unmodified bentonites. SFEs were calculated using contact-angle data, and decreased to minimum values of 41.5–43.6 mJ/m2 from 78.6–78.2 mJ/m2 upon treatment of raw bentonites with CTAB. 100–130% CEC concentration was sufficient to prepare organo-bentonites with maximum hydrophobicity and positively charged surfaces.

The organoclay quasicrystals formed by exchange reactions of fluoromagnesian smectite (FMS) and two kinds of cationic surfactants were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) of both aqueous suspensions and dried powders. ζ potential measurements were also carried out. The two cationic surfactants employed in this study, dodecyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (C12PBr) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C12NBr), have the same alkyl chain length but different head group structures. In aqueous suspensions of C12N/FMS, regular stacking with a basal spacing of 2.28 nm was observed within the range 0.4 to 1.0 of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the C12N/FMS ratios. The basal spacing was constant in this range. The most intense diffraction for the C12N/FMS suspension was observed at 0.6 CEC, and a further increase in the C12N/FMS ratio resulted in a decline of the diffraction intensity and a slight increase in the peak width. On the other hand, in C12P/FMS suspensions with the surfactant/FMS ratios <0.6 CEC, only weak, broad XRD peaks were observed. With higher C12P/FMS ratios (0.8 and 1.0 CEC), strong diffraction peaks appeared with a basal spacing of 3.20 nm. The difference in the observed basal spacings of C12N/FMS and C12P/FMS tactoids was ∼0.9 nm, which did not agree with the difference in the estimated height of the two surfactants (∼0.1 nm). These differences of the tactoid structures between C12N/FMS and C12P/FMS suspensions could be explained in terms of the difference in the adsorption manner of the surfactants on the silicate surface and in the size of the surfactant head groups.

CaMnt is much less important than NaMnt due to its limited commercial applications. The time-dependent property of NaMnt gel has been studied extensively as it is exploited in many applications such as drilling mud and viscosity-modifier applications. In contrast, the time-dependent property of CaMnt suspension and the factors affecting it are largely unknown. The speciation of Ca2+ ions is one such factor to be evaluated. In the current study, pH and solids concentration were examined and then used to validate a recent theory on clay gel time dependency. The results supported the theory that a strong electrostatic double layer (EDL) repulsion in the 3-D network is needed to reorganize the structure and drive it toward the state of minimum free energy. The 12 wt.% CaMnt (STx-1b) gel displayed time-dependent behavior at pH 5 but not at its natural pH of 8.4. At pH 5, the interlayer Ca2+ ions became fully hydrated and desorbed from the platelet surface. This enhanced the EDL repulsion between the platelets. At pH >6.5, the positively charged hydrolysis product Ca(OH)+ began to form and was adsorbed, partially neutralizing the permanent layer charge and weakening the repulsion. However, at 19.4 wt.% solids, the gel displayed pronounced time-dependent behavior despite the high natural pH of 8. The platelets were much closer together, allowing the EDL force to operate and effect structural reorganization. The microstructure of these CaMnt gels showed high platelet concentrations interacting to form a relatively open structure. The microstructure of a kaolin (KGa-2) suspension which showed no time-dependent behavior even after 1 day of ageing revealed the importance of particle morphology and layer charge on time dependency. Its 3-D structure was formed by relatively thick, layered platelets with a low layer charge.

The electrical state of the interface between a kaolinite-dominated clay sample and aqueous electrolyte solutions was characterized using low-frequency conductance measurements. From these measurements, the ζ-potential and surface conductivity contributions from the diffuse and non-diffuse parts of the electrical double layer were obtained. The suspensions were studied as a function of volume fraction, electrolyte concentration, and electrolyte type (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, CsCl, CaCl2, SrCl2, and BaCl2). Interpretation in terms of the surface conductance revealed that a substantial part of the surface conductivity originates in the inner part of the double layer. Electrokinetic potentials and related diffuse double layer properties are highly dependent on the nature of monovalent counterions, whereas divalent counterions do not show such clear dependencies. Further presented was a simple way to estimate the order of magnitude of counterion mobilities in the inner part of the electrical double layer. All counterions were shown to have a substantial mobility in the inner part of the double layer. Finally, we suggest that the apparent ion-specific effects observed in the diffuse part of the double layer are at least in part related to the finite size of the counterions. Our findings are relevant to scenarios where fluid flow in porous media is accompanied by charged species transport, e.g., in electro-osmotic remediation, spectral-induced polarization, or permeability measurements.

This research communication describes enzymatic and physico-chemical changes during storage of UHT milk. The UHT milk sample was stored at 5 and 30°C for 4 months and analyzed regularly at intervals of one month. During storage of UHT milk, there was a significant (P < 0.001) increase in non-protein nitrogen, non-casein nitrogen, soluble calcium, soluble magnesium and proteolysis, while a significant (P < 0.001) decrease in pH was observed. There was a slight change in the particle size and zeta potential of casein micelles. Changes were more pronounced in milk samples stored at 30°C than in those stored at 5°C. During storage, there occurred changes in pH, viscosity, salt balance and nitrogenous components which adversely affected quality. It was concluded that the proteolysis led to the acidification which had a destabilizing effect on the milk.

The zeta potential and yield-stress behaviour of gels prepared from as-received SHCa-1 hectorite (Ht) containing 50 wt.% impurities, mainly of calcite, dolomite and quartz, were characterized. The zeta potential is negative in the pH range 4–12. At pH <5, reaction of CaCO3 producing CO2 and Ca2+ increased the solution conductivity significantly and reduced the zeta potential. The buffering effect due to this chemical reaction was also observed in the yield stress–pH characterization below pH 8. Low yield stress was observed below pH 6 and above pH 12. The yield stress peaked at pH ~8, where Ht displayed a zeta potential of –20 mV. The relationship between maximum yield stress and Ht content (wt.%) was linear and was not affected by impurities. The ageing behaviour was characterized by an initial phase of rapid yield-stress increase and then by a phase of gradual increase. The Leong model performed better than the two-parameter glassy polymer ageing model in describing this ageing behaviour. However, the empirical power law model was more accurate. The timescale of the ageing process is long, lasting several days. An open cellular microstructure was observed to form in the gels. Impurities appeared not to interact with or bind to the Ht platelets.

In this study, the influence of pH, electrolyte concentration and type of ionic species (such as LiCl, NaCl, KCl, RbCl, CsCl, CaCl2, AlCl3) on the electrokinetic properties (zeta potential and electrokinetic charge density) of montmorillonite has been quantified. The zeta potential of montmorillonite particles did not change significantly with change in pH. The valencies of the ions have proven to have a great influence on the electrokinetic behaviour of the suspension. There is a gradual decrease in the zeta potential (from —24 mV to —12 mV) with increase in monovalent electrolyte concentration (from 10-4 M to 10-1 M). At any monovalent electrolyte concentration, the magnitude of the zeta potential increased with the electrolytes in the order Li+ > Na+ > K+ > Rb+ > Cs+. The zeta potential of the montmorillonite minerals in CaCl2 solutions illustrated the same behaviour as the monovalent cations. Less negative values were obtained for the CaCl2 electrolyte (∼–10 mV) due to the greater valence of the ions. A sign reversal was observed at an AlCl3 concentration of 5 x 10-4 M, and, at greater concentrations, zeta potential values had a positive sign (∼20 mV).

The electrokinetic charge density of montmorillonite showed similar trends of variation in mono and divalent electrolyte solutions. Up to concentrations of ∼10-3 M, it remained practically constant at ∼0.5 x 10-3Cm-2, while for greater electrolyte concentrations the negative charge produced more negative values (–16 x 10-3Cm-2). The electrokinetic charge density of montmorillonite particles was constant at low AlCl3 concentrations, but at certain concentrations it increased rapidly and changed sign to positive.

The low-frequency conductivity of aqueous kaolinite suspensions has been measured as a function of volume fraction and concentration of KCl, K2SO4 and BaCl2, respectively. These measurements were interpreted with a theoretical model accounting for surface conductivity and particle shape. For the first time, an internally consistent data set was established by measuring all parameters necessary to solve the relevant equations. The simultaneous availability of surface conductivity, surface charge density and diffuse layer charge density permitted the estimation of counterion mobilities in the stagnant layer and a consistency check for the evaluation procedure of the conductivity experiments. In agreement with current literature results, monovalent counterions were found to have a Stern layer mobility similar to their bulk mobility, whereas the mobility of divalent counterions in this layer is reduced by a factor of ∼2.
