We run numerical simulations of massive colliding wind binaries, and quantify the accretion onto the secondary under different conditions. We set 3D simulation of a LBV–WR system and vary the LBV mass loss rate to obtain different values of wind momentum ratio η. We show that the mean accretion rate for stationary systems fits a power law Macc∝ η–1.6 for a wide range of η, until for extremely small η saturation in the accretion is reached. We find that the stronger the primary wind, the smaller the opening angle of the colliding wind structure (CWS), and compare it with previous analytical estimates. We demonstrate the efficiency of clumpy wind in penetrating the CWS and inducing smaller scale clumps that can be accreted. We propose that simulations of colliding winds can reveal more relations as the ones we found, and can be used to constrain stellar parameters.

KV UMa (XTE J1118+480) is an X-ray binary that is known to undergo outbursts in 2000 and 2005. This paper presents the discovery of a large outburst starting in 1927 on the archival photographic plates and an analysis of the long-term optical activity of this system. We used the photographic data from DASCH (Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard). We placed the 1927 outburst in the context of the observed outbursts of KV UMa. We show that it is a double event, with a precursor similar to the one of the outbursts in 2000. We find a big difference between the 1927 and 2000 outbursts as regards the length of the gap between the precursor and the main outburst. It is more than 250 d in 1927, whereas it is about 20 d in 2000, although the brightnesses of all peaks are mutually comparable. We also show that the individual optical outbursts of KV UMa differ from each other by the duration of the stage of a slow decline of brightness (sometimes roughly a plateau). This determines the length of the entire main outburst. Both the peak magnitude and the brightness of the outburst when the slow decline transitions to a steep final decaying branch plausibly reproduce in all three outbursts. In the interpretation, the short duration of the precursor is caused by the fact that only the thermal-viscous instability operated in the accretion disk while also the tidal instability of the disk contributed in the subsequent main outburst.

AGN feedback, through either radiation or kinematics by expelled medium, plays a crucial role in the coevolution of supermassive black hole (SMBH) and its host galaxy. The nuclei spend most of their time as low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs), whose spectra are distinctive to bright AGNs, and the feedback is the hot mode (also named kinetic mode). We thus investigate the radiative heating in the hot mode. We calculate the value of “Compton temperature” Tc, which defines the heating capability of the radiation at given flux, and find that Tc∼(5−15)×107 K, depending on the spectrum of individual LLAGNs. This work provides a cheap way to include the radiative heating of LLAGNs in the study of AGN feedback.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory has detected relatively hard X-ray emission from the central stars of several planetary nebulae (PNe). A subset has no known late-type companions, making it very difficult to isolate which of several competing mechanisms may be producing the X-ray emission. The central star of NGC 2392 is one of the most vexing members, with substantial indirect evidence for a hot white dwarf (WD) companion. Here we report on the results of a radial velocity (RV) monitoring campaign of its central star with the HERMES échelle spectrograph of the Flemish 1.2 m Mercator telescope. We discover a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 1.902208 ± 0.000013 d and an RV semi-amplitude of 9.96 ± 0.13 km s−1. The high degree of nebula ionisation requires a WD companion (M ≳ 0.6M⊙), which the mass-function supports at orbital inclinations ≲ 7°, in agreement with the nebula orientation of 9°. The hard component of the X-ray spectrum may be explained by the companion accreting mass from the wind of the Roche lobe filling primary, while the softer component may be due to colliding winds. A companion with a stronger wind than the primary could produce the latter and would be consistent with models of the observed diffuse X-ray emission detected in the nebula. The diffuse X-rays may also be powered by the jets of up to 180 km s−1, and active accretion would imply that they may be the first active jets of a post-common-envelope PN, potentially making NGC 2392 an invaluable laboratory to study jet formation physics. The 1.9 d orbital period rules out a double-degenerate merger leading to a Type Ia supernova, and the weak wind of the primary likely also precludes a single-degenerate scenario. We suggest that a hard X-ray spectrum, in the absence of a late-type companion, could be a powerful tool to identify accreting WD companions.

This paper summarizes our recent works of studying AGN feedback in an isolated elliptical galaxy by performing high-resolution hydrodynamical numerical simulations. Bondi radius is resolved and the mass accretion rate of the black hole is calculated. The most updated AGN physics, namely the discrimination of cold and hot accretion modes and the exact descriptions of the AGN radiation and wind for a given accretion rate are adopted and their interaction with the gas in the host galaxy is calculated. Physical processes such as star formation and SNe feedback are taken into account. Consistent with observation, we find the AGN spends most of the time in the low-luminosity regime. AGN feedback overall suppresses the star formation; but depending on location in the galaxy and time, it can also enhance it. The light curve of specific star formation rate is not synchronous with the AGN light curve. These results put a serious challenge to the observational test of the relation between AGN activity and star formation. We find that wind usually plays a dominant role in controlling the AGN luminosity and star formation, but radiation also cannot be neglected.

The blue continuum of the eclipsing polar UZ For is dominated by single- or double-peaked emission from He ii, He i and the Balmer lines. The red spectrum shows weak emission from the Na i doublet at λ 8183 and 8194 Å and strong emission from the Ca ii lines at λ 8498 and 8542 Å. Doppler tomography of the strongest emission features reveals the presence of emission from the irradiated face of the secondary star, the threading region, and the ballistic and magnetically confined accretion stream. We have obtained 28 new eclipse times of UZ For during 2011–2016 as part of our eclipse timing follow-up programme to test the two-planet model proposed to explain variations in the eclipse times of UZ For.

We calculate the expected microlens light curves to see what aspects of flow structures can be extracted by microlensing.We specifically pick up a disk-corona model as a model for bright quasars.We then expect distinct behaviour in the soft and hard X-ray microlens variations. Since soft X-ray emission is produced by Compton up-scattering of soft (optical-UV) photons from the innermost part of the disk, while hard X-ray radiation is via bremsstrahlung within the corona of a large volume, the model calculations predict more rapid soft X-ray changes than hard X-ray ones. Further, bright spots (or blobs) on the disk will produce humps in the microlens light curves. Future microlens observations will constrain such emission processes, thereby probing accretion flow structure.

The hydromagnetic structure of a neutron star accreting symmetrically at both magnetic poles is calculated as a function of accreted mass, Ma, starting from a polytropic sphere plus central magnetic dipole (Ma =0) and evolving the configuration through a quasistatic sequence of twodimensional, Grad–Shafranov equilibria as Ma increases. It is found that the accreted material spreads equatorward under its own weight, compressing the magnetic field into a thin boundary layer and burying it everywhere except in a narrow, equatorial belt. The magnetic dipole moment of the star is given by µ=5.2×1024(B0/1012.5G)1.3(Ma/10−8Mʘ yr−1)0.18(Ma/Mʘ)−1.3Gcm3, and the fractional difference between its principal moments of inertia is given by Є=2.1×10−5(B0/1012.5G)0.27(Ma/10−8Myr−1)0.18(Ma/Mʘ)1.7, for Ma in the range 10−5Ma/Mʘ10−1,where B0 is the pre-accretion magnetic field strength, and Ma is the accretion rate.

Optical and X-ray spectroscopy indicate that the X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 is seen through a cloud of gravitationally bound matter. We discuss an unstable negative feedback mechanism (originally proposed by Kotani et al. 1999), based on X-ray heating of this matter which controls the accretion rate when the source is in a low X-ray luminosity state. A deep minimum lasting ∼6 hours occurred during observations with the RXTE satellite over 1996 July 19–21. The shape of the X-ray pulses changed remarkably from before to after the minimum. These changes may be related to the transition from neutron star spin-down to spin-up which occurred at about the same time. Smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations of the effect of adding matter with opposite angular momentum to an existing disk, show that it is possible for a number of concentric rings with alternating senses of rotation to co-exist in a disk. This could provide an explanation for the step-like changes in Ṗ which are observed in GX 1+4. Changes at the inner boundary of the disk occur at the same timescale as that imposed at the outer boundary. Reversals of material torque on the neutron star occur at a minimum in LX.

III Zw2 was observed with XMM-Newton in July 2000. Its X-ray spectrum can be described by a power law of photon index Γ≈1.7 with a Gaussian line at 6.7 KeV. There is no significant evidence of intrinsic absorption within the source or of a soft X-ray excess. Multi-wavelength light curves over a period of 25 years show related variations from the radio to X-rays. We interpret the radio to optical emission as synchrotron radiation, self-absorbed in the radio/millimetre region, and the X-rays as mainly due to Compton up-scattering of low energy photons by the population of high energy electrons that give rise to the synchrotron radiation.

Luminous water maser emission in the 616–523 line at 22GHz has been detected from two dozen galaxies. In all cases the emission is confined to the nucleus and has been found only in AGN, in particular, in Type 2 Seyferts and LINERs. I argue that most of the observed megamaser sources are powered by X-ray irradiation of dense gas by the central engine. After briefly reviewing the physics of these X-Ray Dissociation Regions, I discuss in detail the observations of the maser disk in NGC 4258, its implications, and compare alternative models for the maser emission. I then discuss the observations of the other sources that have been imaged with VLBI to date, and how they do or do not fit into the framework of a thin, rotating disk, as in NGC 4258. Finally, I briefly discuss future prospects, especially the possibility of detecting other water maser transitions.

This paper summarises our work on the role of magnetic fields in accretion disks presented in two papers elsewhere. In the first part (a summary of part of Kuncic & Bicknell 1999), we present a formal development of the equations governing the structure of an accretion disk containing magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. The importance of the different terms in the energy and momentum equations is discussed, and a parametrisation of the unresolved processes is suggested that could be used to make further progress. We briefly explore whether an MHD accretion disk can transport a significant part of the gravitational power into a corona by buoyancy. In the second part, we present some exploratory calculations of the vertical structure of accretion disks, in which non-local dissipation of energy due to the buoyant transport of magnetic field energy is taken into account. It is argued that the efficiency of buoyant magnetic transport depends very strongly on the size of the coherent magnetic regions. If the size of the buoyant cells is not very close to the disk thickness, magnetic energy generated by dynamo action inside the disk will be dissipated locally, and will not be available to transport a significant part of the accretion luminosity into a corona.

This paper discusses the boundary layer and the emission spectrum from an accretion disk having a jet anchored at its inner radius, close to the black hole. We summarise our earlier work and apply it to the accretion disks of some blazars. We suggest that the ‘accretion disk with jet’ (ADJ) model could make the bridge between standard accretion disk models (suitable for quasars and FRii sources) and low-power advection dominated accretion disk models (suitable for some of the low-power BL Lacs and FRi sources).

The jet is collimated within a very narrow region close to the black hole (nozzle). In our model it is assumed that the boundary layer of the disk is the region between radius Rms — the last marginally stable circular orbit calculated for a Kerr geometry — and the radius Rjet, which gives the thickness of the ‘footring’, i.e. the base of the jet. We analyse the size of the boundary layer of the disk where the jet is fed with energy, mass, and angular momentum. As a consequence of the angular momentum extraction, the accretion disk beyond Rjet no longer has a Keplerian flow. A hot corona usually surrounds the disk, and entrainment of the corona along the flow could also be important for the energy and mass budget of the jet.

We assume that the gravitational energy available at the footring of the jet goes into the jet, and so the spectrum from the accretion disk gives a total luminosity smaller than that of a ‘standard’ accretion disk, and our ADJ model should apply for blazars with low central luminosities. Variations of the boundary layer and nozzle may account for some of the variability observed in active galactic nuclei.

Recently, the OGLE team have reported a clear quasar microlensing signal in Q2237+0305. I have analyzed the microlens event of ‘image C’ by using their finely and densely sampled light curves. From light curve fitting, I unambiguously set the source size of ≤0.98 Einstein-Ring radius as a conservative limit. This limit corresponds to 2000 AU, if I adopt Mlens ~ 0.1M obtained by a recent statistical study of the mean mass of the lens object. This gives clear evidence for the existence of an accretion disk in the central region of the quasar.

The system of accretion disk and black hole is usually considered as the central engine of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). It is usually thought that the disk in the central engine of GRBs is the advection-dominated accretion disk, which is developed from a massive (mass Mdisk) torus at radius rdisk. We find a positive correlation between the isotropic gamma-ray energy Eiso and duration (so-called T90) for GRBs. We interpret this correlation within the advection-dominated accretion disk model, associating Eiso and T90 with Mdisk and viscous timescale respectively.

The question of the origin of the gas supplying the accretion process is pertinent especially in the context of enhanced activity of Galactic Center during the past few hundred years, seen now as echo from the surrounding molecular clouds, and the currently observed new cloud approaching Sgr A*. We discuss the so-called Galactic Center mini-spiral as a possible source of material feeding the supermassive black hole on a 0.1 parsec scale. The collisions between individual clumps reduce their angular momentum. and set some of the clumps on a plunging trajectory.

We conclude that the amount of material contained in the mini-spiral is sufficient to sustain the luminosity of Sgr A* at the required level. The accretion episodes of relatively dense gas from the mini-spiral passing through a transient ring mode at ~ 104 Rg provide a viable scenario for the bright phase of Galactic Center.

Correlations between the radio and X-ray bands in the hard state of black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs) have led to the discovery of the Fundamental Plane of black hole accretion, linking accretion-driven radiative attributes to black hole mass. Although this discovery has led to new constraints on radiative efficiencies, there is still significant degeneracy in terms of understanding the governing physics. I present several new results exploring the processes driving the Fundamental Plane over the black hole mass range. These include the first ever homogeneous fits of sources at approximately the same Eddington luminosity but millions of times different in mass, which I focus on for this proceeding article.

The fact that self-confined jets are observed around black holes, neutron stars and young forming stars points to a jet launching mechanism independent of the nature of the central object, namely the surrounding accretion disc. The properties of Jet Emitting Discs (JEDs) are briefly reviewed. It is argued that, within an alpha prescription for the turbulence (anomalous viscosity and diffusivity), the steady-state problem has been solved. Conditions for launching jets are very stringent and require a large scale magnetic field Bz close to equipartition with the total (gas and radiation) pressure. The total power feeding the jets decreases with the disc thickness: fat ADAF-like structures with h ~ r cannot drive super-Alfvénic jets. However, there exist also hot, optically thin JED solutions that would be observationally very similar to ADAFs.

Finally, it is argued that variations in the large scale magnetic Bz field is the second parameter required to explain hysteresis cycles seen in LMXBs (the first one would be Ṁa).

In recent years, numerous efforts have been devoted to unravel the connection between accretion flow and jets in accreting compact objects. Here we report new constraints on these issues, through the long term study of the radio and X-ray behaviour of the black hole candidate H 1743–322. This source is known to be one of the “outliers” of the universal radio/X-ray correlation, i.e. a group of stellar mass accreting black holes displaying fainter radio emission for a given X-ray luminosity, than expected from the correlation. In this work we find, at high X-ray luminosity in the hard state, a tight radio/X-ray correlation with an unusual steep slope of b = 1.38 ± 0.03. This correlation then breaks below ~5 × 10−3LEdd (M/10M⊙)−1 in X-rays and becomes shallower. When compared with radio/X-ray data from other black hole X-ray binaries, we see that the deviant points of H 1743–322 join the universal correlation and seem to follow it at low luminosity. Based on these results, we investigate several hypotheses that could explain both the b ~ 1.4 slope and the transition toward the universal correlation.

We present results from a survey of the properties of the central black holes in nearby AGN. This shows that AGN radiating near Eddington are on average less massive now than at z ~ 1.
